Players who download it will be able to play through two single-player missions (High Moon Studios has been showing off two missions starring Bumblebee and Grimlock at various events recently, so odds are it's those two), as well as dip into multiplayer and the in-depth customization system.

Now the studio's returning to Hasbro's toy line once again, leaving behind the Michael Bay-inspired setting of the films.

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron, on the surface, seems like a return to High Moon's true love: telling its own stories about giant, talking transforming robots. Separating itself from the films, Fall of Cybertron leaves High Moon free to geek out about Autobot and Decepticon history, wrapping it all up in Gears of War-style third-person shooter gameplay. And as High Moon said about the first game way back when, the emphasis here is supposed to be on freedom, and the unique ability to play as a robot or vehicle, switching whenever you want.

But for all of High Moon's enthusiasm about transforming, the demo on display at E3 was less-than-flattering to the series and its promise of complete freedom.

So, it should come as no surprise to anyone that the Autobot's forthcoming adventure on Cybertron should so effortlessly transmogrify itself from a console title to a PC game.

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron will launch on PCs on August 28, 2012, concurrent with the game's console release on PS3 and 360. Keep in mind, this is the PC release of a Transformers game, and not the release of a PC Transformer, like we had originally inferred. Alas, the day when we'll be able to go on thrilling adventures with a wise-cracking anthropomorphized laptop is still somewhere over the horizon.

Fall of Cybertron is currently in development at High Moon Studios, the team behind the well-received Transformers: War for Cybertron, with some upgrades.

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron takes place during the final hours of a civil war that eventually destroys the planet. The Decepticons have won, driving the Autobots to seek a new home somewhere amongst the stars. As Optimus Prime and his Autobot buddies race to find a way off the planet, Megatron and his dastardly Decepticons seek to rid the universe of all Autobot life. They're big old meanies like that.

When asked why movie rights for Space Invaders would even exist, the entire human population of Earth crumbled into exasperated, bewildered piles of dust.

We first caught wind of a potential Space Invaders adaptation in a report by the L.A. Times last year, however it's unclear whether or not di Bonaventura's Space Invaders and Warner Bros.'s Space Invaders are one-in-the-same. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the pair have begun the process of finding a writer to pen the script, which we can only assume will have very little to do with space/invaders, and everything to do with Shia LaBeouf.

The developer of browser-based fantasy MMO RuneScape has worked out a deal with Hasbro which will see its game released in North America, Europe, Latin America, Australia and New Zealand sometime in 2012.

There's little to go on beyond Jagex CEO Mark Gerard's promise that the title will be "dynamic and action-packed" -- and no word if it'll be based on the classic G1 Transformers or any of its subsequent iterations (or even the Bayformers).

Asia is getting its own, separate Transformers MMO from China's NetDragon. It's slated to roll out there this year.

The company also outlined the future of some of its biggest franchises over the course of the next calendar year. According to CEO Eric Hirshberg, the publisher will launch titles from "proven franchises including the Hero brand, Spider-Man, X-Men and Transformers, which will be supported by what is expected to be another major blockbuster movie from Michael Bay." Sounds like they're kinda putting the cart in front of the giant, shapeshifting robot-car with that one.

Hirshberg also made the unsurprising announcement that 2011 would also see the release of a new Call of Duty, explaining "in the back half of 2011, we are launching a new, large-scale Call of Duty FPS title." Considering the last installment in the franchise had like, ten different scenes where nukes went off, we don't know how much "larger" the proceedings could become.

Unless, of course, Hirshberg was referring to Activision's oft-rumored plans to monetize the series' multiplayer component. Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter, who previously predicted Activision would subscriptionalize the franchise this year, released a statement shortly after the conference call, stating, "We expect Activision to announce plans to monetize multiplayer online some time in 2011, and expect greater visibility into the release schedule throughout the year."

The Transformers license, much like the car-shaped robots contained within, is adapting into a new form: an MMO game. NetDragon, a Chinese online game developer also responsible for the "new" Ultima Online, has worked out a deal with Hasbro to develop an MMO based on the Robots in Disguise, due next year.

Unfortunately, pretty much the only detail announced about this game is that it's "expected to officially roll-out in 2011 in China as well as other select markets in Asia, MENA and Russia/CIS." If you're an American and were already dreaming about building a custom carbot avatar and giving your friends metal high fives, sorry!

Why make a Transformers game for Asian markets? "As a brand and a cultural icon," NetDragon Chairman and Executive Director Liu Dejian said, "Transformers is already a household name in China, and we are extremely honored to be able to join hands with Hasbro to bring the excitement and fanaticism of Transformers into the online gaming sector." A household name in China! Who knew ... besides, apparently, every household in China.

This one has a good look at in-game boss Trypticon, a gigantic beast that can transform from a full-sized mobile battle station into a robotic T-Rex.

In other words, it's just like the piece of plastic that you spent a good half hour unsuccessfully begging your parents for, only to get to school the next day and discover that your friend Jimmy already had one. That Jimmy, he always had all the good toys. What a jerk. Of course, twenty-something years later, he's now managing a Walgreens and you're blogging about video games! And, as we discovered during our reason hands-on session with the game, it's actually pretty fun.

Instead, Tieger pointed to Sam Raimi and a certain webslinger as big influences for his upcoming release, as he spoke to a group of press during a recent preview of the game at the studio's offices in Carlsbad, Calif.

Tieger says that even though his team is creating a licensed Transformers game, he wants it to be like the first Spiderman film in that it appeals to three audiences: folks who just want a good action ride; brand fans, who want to be reminded of what they liked about the universe as kids; and hardcore fans, who will get every single reference and inside joke -- he wants to "smash you in the face with nostalgia."

Following his presentation and a hands-on preview of the game, I chatted with Tieger about War for Cybertron and what game he would "love, love, love" to make next:

Joystiq: So what was the pitch behind this game? What was the impetus behind a game like this?

Matt Tieger: Well, we knew that Activision came to us and said, "We think you guys are a good fit for a Transformers game." Based on our sensibilities for some things that we had done before, we had done some prototypes, and they thought we were a good match. And we had lots of Unreal Engine experience. And they wanted to make a non-movie based Transformers game. So they asked, "What do you want to do," basically, within the confines of that. And we came up with a plan, and redesigned a bunch of characters and then started talking to Hasbro.

There's nothing wrong with the idea of Transformers -- you know, gigantic, transforming robots at war. With War for Cybertron, High Moon Studios is attempting to recreate that intriguing premise as an Unreal Engine-based third-person shooter.

I played through several single-player and multiplayer levels of the game during a recent press event at High Moon Studios' offices in Carlsbad, Calif., and it was apparent that the developer has brought all of its Unreal experience to the fore. There are some very cool gameplay ideas at play that should make for an entertaining romp, especially when experienced with a friend or two. (Hey, if a 50 Cent game can pull it off ... )

Click for more pictures to meet the eyeIn Transformers: War for Cybertron's multiplayer mode, you can make your own characters, with cool Transformer names like, uh, Robot ... guy, and Metal ... punching ... bot. We're not good at naming Transformers, apparently.

But the single-player game is full of classic characters reinterpreted for their pre-Earth, pre-Earth-technology appearances. The latest characters to be revealed for the game are Autobot Ironhide, who is best known for transforming into a truck and being old, and Decepticon Skywarp, a jet who could teleport in the classic Transformers series, and now has cloaking technology instead. That makes more sense, actually -- why would you need to transform into a jet if you could teleport?

Both characters will be playable in the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC versions of War for Cybertron, out June 22.

In this trailer, see the four different classes available in War for Cybertron's multiplayer mode. Even though the "turning into fighter jets" bit is out in favor of turning into space tanks and other fictional vehicles, the other main linchpin of the Transformers franchise is fully intact: robots fighting constantly.

Playable versions of Decepticons Shockwave and Demolisher are part of Activision's pre-order bonuses for Transformers: War for Cybertron. Squishy humans who pre-order through Amazon will receive an unlock code for Demolishor, while GameStop customers receive a code for Megatron's cold and calculating companion, Shockwave. (Sorry, Amazon, there's just no competition here.)

The bonus codes are available for the Xbox 360 and PS3 deployments of the game. Wii's Transformers: Cybertron Adventures currently has no announced pre-order bonus.

No? Good, let's work from there.

Transformers: War for Cybertron, developed by High Moon Studios (The Bourne Conspiracy, Darkwatch), takes its inspiration from the G1 universe of the '80s cartoon. Actually, that's not entirely accurate. It's more like what the new J.J. Abrams Star Trek movie is to the original. The characters are the same, their motivations are similar; however everything has a whole new (in this case, literal) paint job. Lead Designer Matt Tieger tells us the game presents "nothing that violates your expectations" and the studio worked closely with Hasbro to stay true to the original idea of the Transformers ... speaking of the original idea of Transformers, there will also be action figures based on the game's interpretations of the characters.

In War for Cybertron, players participate in two campaigns, one following the righteous Autobots and the other shadows the misunderstood Decepticons. Both campaigns take place on the Transformer home planet of Cybertron and, as Tieger puts it, "Ends up with them having no place to go."

Each campaign features three-player online (no offline or "couch") co-op. For the Autobots, the level we saw featured Optimus (not a Prime, yet) and Bumblebee meeting for the first time, and rolling along in the always awkward "third wheel" spot was Ratchet. The Decepticons included Starscream, Thundercracker, Skywarp, Soundwave and Megatron. Of course, in both cases, there are several more playable characters. For fans of the original series, many of the voices will sound wrong -- sadly, in some very important instances, the cartoon's original voice actors have passed away.

The upcoming Transformers: War for Cybertron seems determined to impress with its rendition of the titular transforming robots' home world, Cybertron. But see, there's one crucial mistake made by the game, one that hasn't been entirely evident until now: No matter what planet he's on, no matter where he is, Optimus Prime is only allowed to transform into a truck and not Tim Burton's version of the Batmobile from 1989. Well, okay, we lied -- we'll also accept Optimus in gorilla form, too.

VideoGamer.com is reporting that a supplement in this week's issue of MCV is advertising two new Xbox 360 Elite bundles. Both bundles are themed around recent movie releases, specifically Star Trek and Transformers 2. The Star Trek bundle comes with an extra controller, a copy of J.J. Abrams' Star Trek stored on a USB drive -- shaped like the Star Fleet logo -- as well as 800 with which to buy "Star Trek PDLC." Let's just hope you don't have to waste those points on Star Trek D-A-C. A Transformers 2 bundle is in the works as well, featuring an extra controller, a copy of the movie on a Bumblebee-shaped USB drive and the Transformers 2 game.

Release date, pricing, and the size of the included hard drive (120GB or "Super Elite" 250GB) are not specified in the ad. However, as MCV is a UK magazine, it's possible these are only destined for that region. We'd be hard-pressed to tell potential buyers which one bundle is the better but, but we will say that only one of them goes where no one has gone before. And the other one is Transformers.

Well, there's a catch: The devs at Luxoflux will only be online playing the recently released Character & Map Pack Plus DLC, meaning interested gamers will have to throw down 800 ($10) to square off against the team.

Of course, if you already own the DLC you're welcome to jump in this Friday, September 4, from 5PM to 9PM (Eastern) and participate in punching giant robots in the face. On August 27, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen will receive a map and character combo DLC pack, which includes first generation models of some of your favorite Autobots and Decepticons. The Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen Character and Map Pack Plus DLC includes eight brand-new playable characters, three new character skins, three multiplayer maps and an "Expert" difficulty setting for the game's single-player campaign.

The DLC -- which also adds new achievements and trophies to the game -- will be available for 800 on the Xbox Live Marketplace and $9.99 on the PlayStation Store. If only the pack added Weird Al Yankovic's "Dare to be Stupid" to the game's soundtrack, it truly would be an old school content pack. A detailed list of the DLC can be found after the break.

EA has dominated the UK charts once again, as the publisher saw three of its titles grace the top five spots in the All Formats category last week. Chart-Track data shows that the one-two punch of a new Harry Potter movie in cinemas and a new game on store shelves was too potent a potion for UK customers to ignore, with Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince shooting to the top spot.

Harry and his Gryffindor chums were joined by Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10, which dropped from the second spot all the way to third, and Fight Night Round 4, a previous top spotter that has plummeted to fifth place. Rounding out the remainder of the top five were Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, which rested comfortably in second, and Wii Fit, which has dropped down to fourth.

If you're among those who've explored every musty nook 'n' cranny of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and were left slavering for more, you're imaginary. But you're also the target demo for a batch of ROTF DLC coming to PS3 and 360 later this summer that adds ten new multiplayer characters (like G1 Starscream), three new multiplayer maps and an Expert difficulty mode.

... People who own ROTF and might be reluctantly conned into getting the DLC just for G1 Starscream? See, that's a demographic that might actually exist.

We were sent a tip regarding a new PS3 bundle that Blockbuster was supposedly selling, so we headed on down to our local chain to snoop around. What we found was the above image showing off a PS3 bundle consisting of a 40gb console, Transformers: The Game, Spider-Man 3 Blu-ray, PS3 remote, HDMI cable, and a 12-week rental card (which allows you to rent one movie each week), all for $359.99. What makes this such an odd story, however, is that this bundle isn't offered at every Blockbuster store.

We called another nearby chain and quizzed an employee on his store's bundle. He said that particular store offered a 80gb console, with Transformers: The Game, Click Blu-ray, PS3 remote, HMDI cable, and a 12-week rental card, all for $499.99. So, it would seem that each store has a bit of leeway with its bundle package. If you're in the market for a PS3 and thinking Blockbuster, give them a call before you head down. Both stores we talked to were all sold out.

"I don't mess with the Wii, to be honest with you ... It's kind of an amateur console ... I'm not into the Wii thing," he told BD, when asked about the Wii version of upcoming movie tie-in game, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

Truth be told, the actor tries to disassociate himself with those who own Wii consoles, continuing, "This is how in a simple way you can find out if it's a gamer you want to play with: Ask them if they have a Wii -- if they say yes, get the f*** out of there." Harsh words, Mr. LaBeouf! While we're inclined to start flapping our gums about the actor's films being defilements of our childhoods and how they placate to a more mainstream crowd -- like a certain console he feels so vehemently about -- we'll just hold our tongues on that. This time, LaBeouf. This time.

Activision, as the bastion of original IP development, announced a number of megaton titles in development for 2010. Names dropped at its investor's call include new additions to its venerable lineup of franchises: 007, Tony Hawk, Spider-man, Transformers and Shrek.

Those hungry for innovation will be able to look forward to a new original action IP from the company. In addition, Activision plans on expanding the Call of Duty franchise to new genres. Call of Duty Kart? Call of Duty Party? Call of Duty Hero: Metallica? We're psyched.

Ostensibly, we're writing this to inform you that Stan Bush's "Transformers" ballad "You Got the Touch" is now available in Guitar Hero World Tour for free. So ... now you know.

Truthfully though, we're writing this post because we horde every chance to embed "The Touch" into Joystiq like a mother stuffing her asthmatic son with vitamins hoping that the nutrients within will help to someday make him stronger. Now, let us be as we let every note of Bush's crooning pump through our veins.
