Trendy Entertainment's Dungeon Defenders 2, which is split into a tower defense sequel and a MOBA, has begun releasing videos for the latter portion of its DNA. Every Wednesday, the studio will highlight a new character for the player-versus-player mode. First up is the "Man and Machine."

Dungeon Defenders 2 announced,

Trendy Entertainment announced Dungeon Defenders 2 today, which we've surmised through great deductive reasoning is the sequel to Dungeon Defenders - also, Trendy kinda said that on its website.

This time out the kids from the first game are all grown up and will participate in cooperative and competitive dungeon defending. The cooperative mode is a "true sequel" to the first game with more heroes, towers and obsessive loot stat comparisons. Trendy also mentions a "24-player overworld" is in the works.

The competitive mode is a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) set in the Dungeon Defenders universe. Trendy describes it as a "streamlined MOBA [that] aims for a shorter learning curve and more RPG-esque take on the genre."

No consoles have been mentioned for the sequel, which is a free-to-play game currently in development for PC, Mac, iOS, Android and "web." The cooperative mode will go into beta later this year or early 2014; the competitive mode is in closed beta with sign-ups available.

New free hero class for Dungeon Defenders

Trendy Entertainment has deposited a brand new hero class into its Steam hit, Dungeon Defenders, and you can currently get it for free. The Jester is described as "a sly trickster born in a whimsical realm of chaos," and she can use any weapon in the game, as well as drop "presents" that open up to give out random defense and extras. The Jester can also use the "Move Tower" ability to change up the gameplan during a round, and the "Wheel O' Fortuna" ability could give your team great bonuses - or hurt everybody really badly.

Sounds like an interesting character choice, especially for those willing to roll the dice. The Jester DLC is free right now to download for current owners, and will remain so until Wednesday, August 22. After that, it will probably need a purchase to play: The Barbarian Hero pack currently sells for $2.99, so save yourself a few bucks and grab The Jester right away if you can.

The fourth and final installment of Dungeon Defenders' DLC saga Quest for the Lost Eternia Shards -- "Sky City" -- is now available on Steam for $3.99. As seen in the trailer above, the DLC appears chock full of biplanes, ogres with impractical jet packs, and jewel-encrusted troll dolls from the depths of monstrous terror.

It also includes two new campaign missions (with two accompanying bosses), six new cinematics, a "Catarang" pet, a Boss Rush challenge mission, eight legendary hero costumes, a Sky Captain Initiate costume, 20-plus new weapons/accessories and "even more secrets for the true, Ultimate Defenders," according to the announcement. Those who prefer defending dungeons on their PS3 or 360 will have to be patient, however, as console versions of the DLC are still listed as "coming soon."

Dungeon Defenders will not make its way to Sony's Vita, developer Trendy Entertainment has stated in its forums. The handheld did have a tech demo of Dungeon Defenders running for the platform, but those development resources will now be moved toward "other pursuits."

"As a small team we often need to pick and choose our projects carefully. This is one of those cases where there were just too many opportunities and things we could be working on, so some of it had to fall by the wayside. Unfortunately, Dungeon Defenders on Vita was one of those projects," Trendy informed Joystiq this afternoon. "That said, we have a bunch of other exciting things we're working on and can't wait till the time comes when we can share them with everyone!"

Dungeon Defenders has expanded its perspective on PC and Mac gameplay (and probably life and love and stuff) with the new Summoner character, who can conduct battle from on high as if in an RTS. Overlord Mode allows the Summoner to supervise entire armies from a top-down perspective, altering the game entirely.

Along with omniscient battle control, the Summoner gets two pets, can levitate for 15 seconds, build an army from sentient crystal and basically wreak havoc on the battlefield, as the above video shows. The Summoner DLC pack is available via Steam for $4.

Dungeon Defenders' "Aquanos" expansion, the third droplet in the Quest for the Lost Eternia Shards series, is available now through Steam. The $4 pack will also be available May 15 on the PlayStation Network, but is currently lost at sea for XBLA, with no word on when it'll wash ashore. [Okay, that's enough! - Ed.]

The wet 'n' wild new area releases the Kraken as a new boss, includes 10 new items, a new pet and a mermaid outfit for the Countess. It also adds the new Sharken enemy and an eight-player co-op challenge called the "Shipwreck Graveyard Uber Monster Fest."

The developers at Trendy are still on the lookout for folks who can design better Dungeon Defender maps than even they can ... and they'll pay.

Trendy Entertainment, the dev behind Dungeon Defenders, is looking to beef up the offerings from that game's free development kit. It's holding a contest, in which it's giving away some real money and prize packs for the best maps made for the game.

To enter, all you have to do is put a map together for the tower defense RPG (here's a guide.) Submit your map to Trendy by June 21, and if it wins both a public vote and a judges' vote you can walk away with $1000, and even get your map included in the game.

The full rules and requirements are over on Trendy's forums. Those of us without any design skills at all will just sit here quietly waiting to see what you put together. Don't mind us.

Dungeon Defenders for Mac has been slightly delayed, arriving the same date as the second Eternia Shards expansion next week, on March 15. Dungeon Defenders was also showcased at a GDC 2012 press briefing by Epic Games for Unreal Engine 3 in Flash over browsers. Epic VP and co-founder Mark Rein made a statement -- and then immediately retracted -- that DD would be free-to-play at launch.

"We definitely know we want to use that technology for a next product, but it's too early to say what that next product will be," Marketing Director Philip Asher of Dungeon Defenders developer Trendy Entertainment told us. "For all intents and purposes, it's just the mobile version in Flash."

Asher told us the demo was a port of the iOS version, Dungeon Defenders: Second Wave, with some graphical improvements, insisting that it was just a tech demo the team got together in four weeks.

"It could be a new game, it could be the PC version [of Dungeon Defenders] adapted to Flash," Asher elaborated. "The whole idea of that technology which really excites us is that it's a whole new way to play Unreal games. ... It'd be a little larger initial download, but it'll stream the rest of the game as you play."

Dungeon Defenders will protect new digital realms when the indie hit makes its way to Mac on March 8. Those seeking to help the process along and revel in the squashing of bugs may rejoice, as beta testing for the Mac version begins today. Those seeking adventure on the new platform should email betatesters@trendyent.com with their name, computer specs and play history with Dungeon Defenders.

Also available sometime today for free on the Steam version of the game is the "Presidents Day Battle Royale" DLC. The content includes the Presidents Day Battle Royale Challenge Mission, punching gloves for the Squire and Monk, along with Democrat Donkey and Republican Elephant pets. There are also four unlockable character skins: President Obama Monk, Michelle Obama Huntress, Mitt Romney Squire and George Washington Apprentice.

The beta and DLC will be available sometime today, and we'll update as soon as it goes live.

Surprise hit Dungeon Defenders has sold a million units across Xbox Live, PSN and Steam, the game's publisher told us in a recent interview. The well-received co-op tower defense action game launched on October 19, 2011, and has kept a steady sales beat going on Steam with deep discounts and consistent support.

"It is tremendously successful franchise," Reverb Publishing CEO Doug Kennedy said. "We have lots of plans to support it both with DLC and additional add-ons for the franchise."

There are still three more packs planned across all platforms in addition to "The Lost Eternia Shards: Mistymire Forest" DLC. On Steam, there is also the current and future Holiday DLC, the New Heroes Pack, the Barbarian character, Assault Mission Pack, Nightmare Mode and more, which will not make its way to consoles. due to "technical and business" concerns.

Dungeon Defenders' smaller-scale DLC, available on PC through Steam, will not be available for the XBLA or PSN versions of the tower defense action title. This content includes: current and future Holiday DLC, the New Heroes Pack, the Barbarian character, Assault Mission Pack, Nightmare Mode, Shops and more.

"After much thought and investigation, we've decided it's unfeasible from both a technical and business standpoint to bring the PC-only content to the console versions," Trendy wrote on its forums, as noted by XBLAfans. "This is for a variety of reasons including the massive restructuring of the current console game that would have to take place, the QA process necessary to prepare for submission, patch size limitations, patch stacking requirements, and the opportunity cost of pursuing other projects."

Major expansion packs like "The Lost Eternia Shards: Mistymire Forest" DLC, of which there are still three more planned, will make their way to consoles. Although this isn't the best news for fans on XBLA or PSN, the PC game goes on sale pretty consistently, so picking it up at a bargain shouldn't be a hardship.

Dungeon Defenders has gotten a whole stockingful of new content for the holidays, available now for PC players. There are new skins and new holiday-themed weapons for all four of the classes, new holiday-themed dress and clothing for enemies, and even a brand new mission to play, which tasks players with delivering presents and then defending them against an army led by a Mega Snowman. That's a ho-ho-whole lot of updates right there.

And as if that wasn't enough, the base game is on sale on Steam for the holidays, where you can pick it up for under $10.The team at Trendy is even giving a holiday wallpaper away for free over on the official website. Trendy Entertainment's polished tower defense action game, Dungeon Defenders, is a mere $3.75 ($11.24 for a four-pack) until 1PM Eastern/10AM Pacific on Steam. The 75 percent discount is part of its Steam's Daily Wishlist promotion.

Dungeon Defenders' DLC, including the New Heroes and Warping Core Challenge Pack, is also currently 75 percent off, for $1.24 and $0.49, respectively. That means one could grab the game and all its DLC for less than the game's regular $15 price.

Dungeon Defenders, Trendy Entertainment's stalwart downloadable title launched in the midst of the end-of-year madness, recently released its software development kit (SDK) and a pre-alpha pass to a new game mode on PC.

The Dungeon Defenders SDK allows modders to tweak all aspects of the game and create... well, whatever they've got the the talent to come up with. Compelling new levels would be a great place to start.

Trendy also launched a pre-alpha pass for the game's 16-player capture the flag mode. In it, two teams of eight compete to hold the flag longest, with players able to import their existing characters. It is an alpha, so dive in if you're ready to give plenty of feedback.

The little co-op tower defense action game that could, Dungeon Defenders, has achieved 250,000 sales. A good start for Trendy Entertainment's solid game that came out during the big bad launch week of Batman: Arkham City. Actually, Batman's no-show on PC may have been a blessing for Dungeon Defenders, since it sold 200K units on PC alone, accounting for 80% of sales.

Trendy plans to continue supporting the title with community events for PS3 and Xbox 360 players, with details found in the gallery below (or downloadable here). The events will include special game modes with the devs and a chance to win unique loot.

Definitely check out Dungeon Defenders if you've got a group to play with . It's easily one of the best co-op experiences of the year with plenty of content.

Dungeons are pretty spooky places to being with, what with the shackles and the chains and the spiders and everything, but are Trendy Entertainment and Reverb Publishing content with letting Dungeon Defenders' inherent dungeon-dwelling spookiness carry it through the brief-yet-important Halloween season? Hell no!

Well, "Hell no!" if you regularly defend dungeons on your PC, at any rate. PSN and XBLA defenders will have to make due, but Steam users can download Dungeon Defenders' Halloween Costume and Mission packs for free, right this very instant. In aggregate, the packs include eight new costumes, a "devilishly hard" Halloween mission, eight new seasonal weapons, and a redecorated tavern for Halloween merry-making.

We don't want PSN or XBLA defenders feeling left out, so we recommend imagining how different your life would be had you purchased the game on Steam, instead of your console of choice. Terrifying!

Combining action RPG elements with tower defense, Dungeon Defenders lets players use spells, abilities and structures to keep creatures from destroying their crystal. Up to four players can team up online to fend off the invading hordes while collecting loot, but the demo limits players to a single map and caps characters at level 8.

Stop me if you've heard this one. Four heroes walk into a dungeon. Together, they set up an intricate series of traps and barriers, all of them cleverly placed so as to dictate a precise flow of traffic, and ultimately designed to slaughter any possible invader. With the floor plan of death put in place, the heroes summon a horde of goblins, wyverns, kobolds and ogres - and go to work.

In short, Dungeon Defenders follows the formula of the ever-growing tower defense genre to the letter. What sets it apart is the fact that it gets damned near everything exactly right.

The latest trailer for Dungeon Defenders takes a look at the Monk, the last class available in the tower defense/hack-and-slash mashup title. The Monk is the game's healer, and can not only use projectiles and combat directly, but can also lay down auras to help friends and hurt foes, providing a little more positional strategy to the proceedings.

He can also pop two boost abilities, one for heroes and one for built defenses. So if you're the support type, he'll probably be the character you'll look for when the game goes live on XBLA and PC on October 19.

Thanks to the addition of in-app purchases, Trendy Entertainment has made the Android version of Dungeon Defenders: First Wave free-to-play. The updated version of the hack-and-slash, tower defense hybrid game will allow Android users to purchase "pets, armor, equipment, and a host of other in-game items," and it's available now on the Android Market.

Trendy has also updated the iOS version of the game, which is now optimized for iPad 2 (though the app is still universal). To celebrate, the game has been discounted to $0.99 for the next week. Check out a video of the iPad 2-optimized Dungeon Defenders after the break.

It's news when two different platforms are linked for multiplayer gaming. But four? Trendy Entertainment has managed to bring cross-platform multiplayer to its Unreal Engine-powered, action-RPG Dungeon Defenders on PS3, PC, iOS and Android. The developer has even implemented cross-platform matchmaking and buddy lists across the devices.

The experience is made possible through GameSpy's online tools, suggesting that cross-platform multiplayer will not only become a reality, but a common feature down the line. Trendy utilized GameSpy Open, a new program that enables start-up and indie developers to use the company's online tools for free.

Trendy and GameSpy plan to showcase a demonstration of the cross-platform experience at GDC later this week. Dungeon Defenders is currently available on iOS and Android; PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 versions are planned for release later this year.

Will Unreal Engine be able to take over the Android sales charts, much as it has on iOS with Infinity Blade? Trendy Entertainment hopes so, as it plans on bringing the first Unreal Engine-powered game to Android phones next week, on December 23rd. Dungeon Defenders: First Wave is a tower defense-RPG hybrid that our own Mike Schramm described as "fast-paced, complex and, at times, utterly overwhelming."

Dungeon Defenders originally began as "Dungeon Defense," an indie game created with Epic's Unreal Dev Kit that mashed up the tower defense and action-RPG genres. Developers Trendy Entertainment then decided to revamp the game, which became Dungeon Defenders, and it's now being readied for release on XBLA, PC and PSN (with support for Move and stereoscopic 3D) later this year.

After a recent preview session with the game, I'll say this: It's complicated. Dungeon Defenders doesn't just mix pieces of a few genres, it totally combines them. There is a full tower defense game here, and a full action-RPG game, and even a little bit of real-time strategy resource management. There's a lot going on, but just like recent genre-mixer Monday Night Combat, players who can juggle a few genres at a time will find a lot to like.

Created by Trendy Entertainment, Dungeon Defenders mixes the hack-and-slash, loot-driven gameplay of dungeon crawlers with the strategic decisions of tower defense. Players are faced with an oncoming horde of monsters and must protect their Eternia Crystals by both building defensive measures and taking the fight directly to the enemy.
