Did that almost reasonable 24-month turnaround time between Final Fantasy XIII and the just-released-in-Japan Final Fantasy XIII-2 rock your understanding of reality? Who could blame you? The development time of the last "direct" sequel was also pretty short -- two years between Final Fantasy X and X-2 -- but it was five years between Final Fantasy XII and XIII. Did Square-Enix make some dark sacrifice to summon the new game so quickly?

You'll probably need to talk with Tri-Ace about that. According to Tri-Ace programmer Yuichiro Kitao (courtesy of Twitter), the Star Ocean/Valkyrie Profile developer assisted with design, programming, and art on the all-too-rare Final Fantasy sequel. Animal sacrifice may have also been involved, but that's not the kind of thing you talk about on Twitter. That's okay, Square-Enix; even Santa had the elves for help with that Christmas(ish) miracle.
Star Ocean developers worked some magic on Final Fantasy XIII-2 originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 26 Dec 2011 10:00:00 EST. After showing off a new tech demo earlier this week, Star Ocean and Valkyrie Profile developer tri-Ace has announced a couple of new games, both published by Konami. Well, it's about to, but a Famitsu leak got there first.

Frontier Gate for PSP combines Monster Hunter with turn-based RPG gameplay, with three-player co-op as players join a guild to explore a new area of the world. Players will choose one of 15 partner characters, with a different storyline for each. Beyond the Labyrinth for 3DS is a 3D dungeon RPG created under the leadership of Resonance of Fate director Takayuki Suguro and Elebits producer Shingo Mukaitouge.

Frontier Gate is expected this year, but the release for Beyond the Labyrinth is still "TBA."
Tri-Ace announces a duo of projects for 3DS and PSP originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 27 Apr 2011 11:45:00 EST. This video shows off the new graphics engine created by Star Ocean dev tri-Ace to great effect. While not based on any existing game (or future title), it does feature clever cameos by a couple recognizable characters -- and looks absolutely stunning.
Continue reading Star Ocean developer's real-time graphics demo is out of this world

Star Ocean developer's real-time graphics demo is out of this world originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 25 Apr 2011 23:30:00 EST. Just as the Xenogears team left Square to create games in a suspiciously similar world for Namco, some of the tri-Ace staffers who made Radiata Stories are working on ... Radiant Historia for DS, over at Atlus. Along with original staff like artist Hiroshi Konishi, Atlus's own developers are also involved, including director Mitsuru Hirata, a veteran of the Shin Megami Tensei series.

With only a Famitsu leak to go on, all we know about the game itself is that it involves time travel in some manner. If you want to find out more by playing the game, you'll have to time travel to November 4. And learn Japanese, we guess.
Atlus bringing Radiant Historia to DS in Japan originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 28 Jul 2010 11:00:00 EST. Update: We've closed the comments and will contact a winner shortly. Keep an eye on your inbox, folks!

There you were, lazing away a Sunday afternoon, when out of nowhere we throw you into an arena and start resonatin' stuff. Nope, it's not a dream -- it's a weird allusion to tri-Ace developed JRPG Resonance of Fate. And rather than sit here reading our weird allusions, why not spend your time actually playing the game in real life? Well you're one step closer to that possibility if you enter our contest below, wherein we'll be giving one lucky winner one copy of the game for their Xbox 360.

All you have to do is tell us about something so memorable from your life that it resonated throughout your own fate. Okay, okay, that's a bit serious. It can just be something memorable from your life, as long as it's clean and, preferably, funny. Drop it into the comments below and we'll pick one of you at random this week as a winner. You've got 24 hours starting ... now!

Leave a comment telling us something memorable from your life, as long as it's clean and, preferably, funny.

You must be 18 years or older and a resident of the US or Canada (excluding Quebec, because of restrictive sweepstakes laws in the province, unfortunately -- we assure you that we love the Quebecois!).

Limit 1 entry per person per day.

This entry period ends at 8:01PM ET on Monday, April 19.

At that time, we'll randomly select one winner to receive one copy of Resonance of Fate for Xbox 360 (ARV: $59.99).

We've already pointed out a handful of times that there are just a few too many JRPGs boldly standing up against Final Fantasy XIII's near-guaranteed dominance in terms of sales. It seems that at least one of those is moving out of its previously believed same-day release date with FFXIII, with Sega telling us in a press release yesterday afternoon that the it's "happy to announce that Resonance of Fate, the next RPG coming from tri-Ace, will be launching in North America on March 16" on both Xbox 360 and PS3.

Clearly Sega is counting on die-hard FF fans to rush through the big release in under 168 hours, just in time for its bullet-riddled affair. We'll certainly see how it all shakes out in a few months when the sales numbers arrive, but we're betting the ground will be littered with chocobo feathers when it does.
JRPG Resonance of Fate, known by the equally ridiculous name of End of Eternity in Japan, will make its way to Europe on March 26, according to a Sega fact sheet. The title debuted to respectable numbers in Japan last month and currently has no official release date in the States, but GameStop seems to think it's March 9 -- yeah, that Final Fantasy XIII March 9.

Now, go ahead and watch that four-minute opener to the game again.
From gorgeous screenshots, to long dramatic CG trailers, to those full of bullets (and even some gameplay), Tri-Ace's upcoming RPG certainly gives us the impression it'll be a blast to play -- heck, we even enjoyed our first hands-on with the game back at TGS 2009.

All that said, even in light of the four-minute-long opening we've dropped above (from the Japanese Xbox 360 version, titled End of Eternity), we're about as worried as can be for any game set to release alongside Final Fantasy XIII. Will the intensity of the opening scene's suicide jump entice you enough to snag a copy over the much ballyhoo'd Square Enix release? We're not quite sure, but it certainly got our zipper-clad boots all in a tussy.
We'll be frank -- there are quite a few JRPGs heading to consoles in the next few months. From Last Rebellion to White Knight Chronicles to Final Fantasy XIII, it's kinda hard to get excited for yet another in Resonance of Fate. That being said, the game's screens and video have thus far been unbelievably impressive (with the new gallery below serving to further that point), and our last hands-on with game was fairly positive. We'll do our best to remember all of that when the game releases on the same day as FFXIII. Seriously.
If you have access to a Japanese PlayStation Network account or (less likely) a Japanese Xbox 360, you can sample the game today. Sega released a demo of the gunplay RPG in Japan, with a tutorial that Siliconera reports is easy enough to follow along with even in Japanese. We were able to suss out the mechanics during TGS with little issue, but we doubt the downloadable demo includes a Sega rep, as our TGS demo did.
What won't be easy to follow along with is the story and dialogue -- but referring once again to Star Ocean 4, maybe that's not the worst thing.
Resonance of Fate demo available on Xbox Live and PSN in Japan originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 23 Dec 2009 06:00:00 EST. If Star Trek was made in Japan and starred a bunch of angsty, futuristic, computer-generated teenagers instead of B-movie actors, and if it was a video game, it would probably look a lot like this. At least the part of the trailer before the sword fights and the demonstrations of language options.

However, while Star Trek benefited from a vocal fan base that saved the original show from cancellation, people who have put time into Star Ocean: The Last Hope are more likely to warn than evangelize.
Star Ocean: The Last Hope International trailer boldly goes into Trek territory originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 21 Dec 2009 23:00:00 EST. It's like the trailer is showing off that all these anime stereotypes and more can be yours if you just play the game. And then there's some fighting.

If you like the Japanese voice work you hear in this trailer (that is, if you don't mind not being able to understand it), remember that the International release will feature both English and Japanese voice tracks, in addition to several subtitle languages. It'll be out February 9, just before the spring 2010 release of an actually new tri-Ace RPG.
Sega previously launched a cute "count-up" site to reveal the date, which has finally arrived at January 28, 2010*. The official game site now shows this information, as well.

Earlier this month, producer Mitsuhiro ShimanoIn told Joystiq that, with Resonance of Fate development on schedule, Sega had the freedom to set the Japanese release date "when it's going to be the best time to fully reach the potential." Apparently, the best time is ... a month after Final Fantasy XIII?

*Note: At the time of this posting, our browser still shows that several hours remain, suggesting that the counter is based on one's local time zone.

[Via Andriasang]
Resonance of Fate destined for Japan on January 28 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 22 Oct 2009 11:29:00 EST. In our brief chat, the developers talked about the unique setting, the guns, and the difficulties of making both a multiplatform game and a game designed for a worldwide audience.

And if you ever wondered what tri-Ace does to unwind after a hard day at the RPG mines, that happens to come up too.
However, the second (and presumably last) trailer for the game from the game show goes back to traditional JRPG form by focusing exclusively on the game's heavy-handed story.

While there's chance for greatness in tri-Ace's upcoming story, we can't say that's what's keeping us interested in the game. Guns fall into three categories: machine guns, handguns, and grenades. (Machine gun-class weapons do "scratch damage," which depletes an enemy's life, but leaves the possibility for it to regenerate over time.)

I got to check out the TGS demo before interviewing its developers, giving me this opportunity to tell you about it. More importantly, though, the experience gave me something to talk to the developers about (more on that later), and in turn I avoided a very awkward social interaction.
Tri-Ace is breaking the JRPG norm by creating a trailer that isn't entirely comprised of CG cutscenes. There is a lot of gameplay footage here -- and as noted earlier, it's bizarre.

Resonance of Fate creates a rather distinct look for itself by giving its main characters guns, and moves that would make Chow Yun-Fat jealous. It's entirely over-the-top, and gives the game an original feel missing from tri-Ace's previous works. It'll be interesting to see if Japanese gamers will pry themselves away from Final Fantasy XIII long enough to give this game a fair shake.

[Via Sega Nerds]
Resonance of Fate sends us to bullet hell in TGS trailer originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 20 Sep 2009 17:30:00 EST. You won't see enormous breasts in this game, we were told by a Sega producer, as he started playing through an untranslated Resonance of Fate. While this is rarely used as a selling point (especially in games), he wanted to emphasize the gritty "realistic" look of tri-Ace's upcoming RPG. Gone are the over-the-top wacky hairdos, cute talking mascots, giant swords and neon-colored hover-vehicles that seem to permeate nearly every Square Enix JRPG. Instead, this fantasy world is meant to resemble our own.

Granted, the people of Bazel, the fictional world in which Resonance of Fate takes place, still have perfect hair and outfits from the trendier shops of Shibuya. It may still not jive with the American sensibilities of "reality," but it's certainly a far cry from tri-Ace's other current-gen efforts, Star Ocean and Infinite Undiscovery.

Resonance of Fate is being billed as a significant departure for tri-Ace. Its first non-Square Enix-published game comes with a brand new graphics engine, and a few new ideas to boot. The word "cliché" was uttered more than once during the presentation -- to describe exactly what the team is trying to avoid. Considering the studio's track record, we obviously had our doubts.
It's not often we're able to do this so long before a game is released -- before we've ever even seen the game on a screen other than the Joystiq Blogtop 3000s[TM] we're assigned -- but we can categorically name Resonance of Fate as our game of the year as of this morning. Why, you ask? Three simple words, friends: Dogs wearing jackets.

New screens of the game, coming from Japan (likely from End of Eternity, the Japanese title of RoF), look, in certain cases, a bit less than thrilling. Sure, the game's CG trailer looked like 95405000 yen, but we're talking still shots of RPG gameplay here -- not exactly life-altering stuff. That being said, well, there's a dog. And he's wearing a jacket!

Gallery: Resonance of Fate (6/29/09)

New Resonance of Fate screens feature anthropomorphic canines originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 29 Jun 2009 10:45:00 EST. Launching on June 5, The Last Hope has already made the trek to North American gamers, but European users have an exclusive pack headed their way to sweeten a possible purchase.

Included in the special edition is the game, a 32-page guide, five Last Hope character cards, a compilation CD soundtrack and limited edition packaging.

While we should be jealous of the bonuses included in the pack, we're more envious of the digistack packing used for the set. Thanks to this special edition, PAL users won't all have to deal with three discs stacked on top of each other, like North American gamers did. New details about tri-Ace's latest RPG, Resonance of Fate, have surfaced, shedding some light on the game's battle system. As if resonating with the fate of most J-RPGs, RoF is your standard turn-based affair, though it does try to shake things up by blending in some potentially strategic damage rules and pseudo-real-time combat (think Eternal Sonata).

The way battles play out is a little something like this (as laid out by 1UP): the player chooses a party member and controls one character at a time. While in control of this character, a timer counts down signifying the duration of this character's actions, which include running around and shooting stuff up. Interestingly, enemies don't have their own individual turns; instead, they attack at the same time while the player's character is currently in action mode. This means enemies can only target the character that's currently being controlled.

Additionally, different damage types add to the strategic gameplay. There are two known types: direct damage, (which is a basic attack) and scratch damage (which is a weaker attack that allows HP to slowly regenerate). We're not sure how this all plays out, but we're assuming there might be more damage types to be discovered later, as the game seems to revolve around guns and ammo (possibly linked to ammo type?). While it doesn't give away anything new about the tri-Ace developed game than last time around, it is, in fact, a proper American trailer and not just footage from a presser in Japan (read as: not in Japanese).

A woman steps from an impossibly high ledge, bullets fly in every direction, a face is pushed, and somewhere in there, things go "totally extreme" and the guitar solo kicks off. The (totally CG at this point) graphics and world give off an almost Cowboy Bebop-esque/future film-noir vibe that we could see ourselves digging. Oh, but the trailer's music? It's awful. It was actually better in the Japanese trailer. You've been warned!
First Resonance of Fate trailer features bullets, drama, and bullet drama originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 18 May 2009 18:30:00 EST. Remember last month when we reported on a few trademarks filed by Sega for Resonance of Fate and Resonance of Time? Turns out our predictions have been validated, as Sega has announced plans to bring the tri-Ace developed JRPG End of Eternity to the US and the company is calling the game ... wait for it ... Resonance of Fate!

The Sega blog is pegging a release date on the title for Spring 2010 -- roughly half a year after its Japanese doppelganger -- and offers scant details on the title. However, it does note quite curiously that this is the first time in history the developer is teaming up with a publisher other than Enix (and recently, Square Enix) to release one of its games. Maybe that has something to do with Square Enix's recent Western ambitions? There isn't much to see in the debut trailer for End of Eternity, tri-Ace's upcoming RPG for the Xbox 360 and PS3. In fact, we're hesitant to even refer to the trailer as a trailer -- the entire thing is comprised of moving screenshots. Also, every bit of explanatory text included is in Japanese, so we can't make sense of it.

Thankfully we already know End of Eternity follows a trio of characters in a world where Earth has become a toxic place to live and civilization has huddled into large towers for survival. According to Siliconera's translation, the game stars characters named Zephyr, Subject 20, and Vashyron, the last of whom is "employed in a private military firm." The battle system, accordingly with the military theme, involves real-time gunplay elements. Of course, there's been no announcement of an international release, since the Japanese release was announced just now.

Step 1: Launch a maddeningly unhelpful teaser website

If there's one thing that generates more anticipation than a new game announcement, it's the announcement of a forthcoming new game announcement. Though it may draw some opprobrium from know-it-all blogs (who will write about your tease even whilst bemoaning it), a teaser website is the ideal catalyst for heated speculation. Be miserly with your information, but be sure to cover some basics: Mention the developer (eg. tri-Ace), the targeted platforms (eg. Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3) and, of course, whether or not the RPG in question is new (see: www.newrpg.jp) or old (see: Square Enix).

Step 2: Initiate a countdown

What good is anticipation if it's not represented through a visual countdown? Modern web technology accomodates a wide range of temporal measurements for your countdown, allowing you to mark the agonizing wait with as much precision as you prefer. If your game's reveal is around the corner, why not opt for days? Of course, you can also resort to counting down the years if your project is a little early or Final Fantasy XIII. Protip: Make the most of your countdown before it's down for the count by counting down to another countdown!

Step 3: Toss fans a fricken bone

Your unflappable fans deserve something special for visiting your teaser page. Now, be careful, you don't want to give the whole thing away! Why not titillate with a piece of art from your RPG? Go with something ambigious and comforting, like a ruined fantasy landscape or a team of pointy-haired adventurers battling a recently unsealed ancient evil.

Next week: How to promote Famitsu review scores, which will be much higher than anyone else's!

[Via Infatuated Gamer]
How to tease the imminent announcement of a new Japanese RPG originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 01 Apr 2009 17:20:00 EST. The more we see of the upcoming tri-Ace developed, Square Enix published, Star Ocean: The Last Hope, the more excited we seem to get. Not only is the Star Ocean series one of the most beloved, classic role-playing franchises still kicking around, both the CGI and in game footage of the game look impressive. Honestly though, we just get overly excited when effeminate heroes jump out of their spacecraft pilot seats to stare blankly at a monitor and luckily this trailer showcases that move twice. 'Round these parts we call that, "Supreme pimp pointing." Star Ocean: The Last Hope lands Stateside on February 24.
Video: Star Ocean "Hope for the Future" originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 26 Jan 2009 00:50:00 EST. Star Ocean: Second Evolution, as the title implies, is a remake of the second Star Ocean game released back in 1999 on the original PlayStation. It is a direct sequel to another PSP remake released earlier this year, Star Ocean: First Departure. Besides the updated graphics, what other new elements can RPG lovers expect? We're going to say what needs to be said; no one named Edge should be that adorable. However, Star Ocean: The Last Hope stars an adorable character named Edge. The Deadline trailer above, released in Japan, showcases some of the locales gamers will visit when Star Ocean: The Last Hope hits the Xbox 360 on March 3, 2009. The latest trailer also shows off some impressive combat, combos and ... okay, seriously though a dude named Edge shouldn't make you want to hug him. Guys named Edge force you to hug them, awkwardly. On a related note, the game looks extremely pretty in cut scenes and in action. Definitely something to look forward to if you're down with Japanese role-playing games.
Video: Star Ocean "Deadline" trailer defies all logic originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 19 Dec 2008 11:45:00 EST.
Valkyrie Profile: The Accused One shipped in Japan just a few days ago, racking up 80,000 sales in its first week and finishing in second place in the charts (to, um, Grand Theft Auto IV).

With a triumphant Japanese launch under its belt, Square Enix is now turning its attention to us, and has opened an understated teaser site to announce the localization and release date of the game in the U.S. As previous evidence has hinted, it'll be known as Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume in North America, and will release on March 17th. RPG fanatics have probably heard this tale before, but there's a bit of history behind the very first Star Ocean game. Back in 1995, a majority of the team that created Tales of Phantasia (which was released stateside on the Game Boy Advance back in 2006) left Namco due to creative differences. The team moved onto Tri-Ace, whose debut title was Star Ocean. One of the last games for the aging Super Famicom, the RPG pushed the console to its limits in terms of the cartridge size and graphics. The game even had limited voice-acting, which was unheard of (no pun intended) in those days. The question is, does this remake of the first game in the classic franchise have what it takes to stand out in the portable gaming market?

Continue reading PSP Fanboy review: Star Ocean: First Departure

PSP Fanboy review: Star Ocean: First Departure originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 20 Oct 2008 22:00:00 EST.
Having played all the Star Ocean titles officially available in North America, I was more than eager to try out Square-Enix's remake of the game that started it all. As most Star Ocean fans know, the original title was released on the Super Famicom in 1996 but never saw the light of day in the US, so this PSP-exclusive remake is the first time many of us will be playing the game. Read on to find out my thoughts after spending a couple of hours with the game.

According to data provided by Famitsu publisher Enterbrain, the Xbox 360 has outsold the PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii in Japan for the week ending September 14. At a pre-TGS event Microsoft announced the price of the Xbox 360 would be reduced in Japan on September 11, coupled with the release of the Square-Enix exclusive RPG Infinite Undiscovery, the Xbox 360 has landed on the top of the console charts. The sales breakdown from Enterbrain looks like this:

Xbox 360: 28,681 units

Wii: 27,057 units

PlayStation 3: 8,050 units

Speaking of Infinite Undiscovery, the tri-Ace developed RPG has found success in Japan selling 86,708 units in its first week of release. Recently, Microsoft has seen moderate success with exclusive titles in the region including a sales-spike in August when the Namco Bandai timed-exclusive Tales of Vesperia released -- which led to the Xbox 360 console selling out in the country.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
Xbox 360 outsells PS3, Wii in Japan originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 17 Sep 2008 12:00:00 EST. Terrible news for immobile couch potatoes: According to a Square Enix representative, Infinite Undiscovery will ship on two discs when it releases exclusively on the Xbox 360 in September. The real-time role-playing title from tri-Ace marks the first game to be published by Square Enix on an Xbox platform since 2006's space shooter, Project Sylpheed.

Shipping on September 2 in North America, September 5 in Europe and September 11 in Japan, Infinite Undiscovery promises an epic 20-25 hour adventure for the Xbox 360. And that's just while you're busy changing discs.
X08: Infinite Undiscovery discovered on two discs originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 21 Aug 2008 17:29:00 EST. Since then, our European readers may have wondered if the titles would see release across the Atlantic. Luckily, Star Ocean actually will be crossing ... an ocean into Europe and releasing this October. However, only First Departure has been announced with a wide open October date. North Americans should still look out for October 21, 2008 for SO1 <strike>both titles</strike> and January 6, 2009 for SO2.

Star Ocean announced for Europe originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 20 Aug 2008 19:00:00 EST.
