Trials Evolution: Gold Edition is a collection of the XBLA success Trials Evolution and all of the levels from its predecessor, Trials HD. Rounding out the package is the in-game level editor, which was used to recreate the Trials HD levels found in this very package. Not included: A way to stop playing Trials once you start.

A closed beta for Trials Evolution: Gold Edition, the PC port of the XBLA hit set to drop in March 21, has started today. Ubisoft has announced that anyone who pre-orders the digital version of Trials Evolution: Gold Edition will get instant access to the beta, which runs until March 14.

The beta itself covers all game content - it's less of a beta and more of an early unlock for a specific amount of time, really. Trials Evolution: Gold Edition features all of the content from the console release, plus all tracks from Trials HD, recreated with Trials Evolution's updated graphics and physics engine.

The game bundles up the previously Xbox-exclusive Trials Evolution and all the levels from its predecessor, Trials HD, into one big, bone-crushing package. Gold Edition features the same extensive level editor, allowing players to come up with all kinds of creations, including ones that have nothing to do with racing at all.

The second batch of DLC for Trials Evolution is headed your way in December (yes, that's this month), and it's titled 'Riders of Doom' in celebration of the end of the world. Riders of Doom will run you 400 MS Points ($5 USD).

The DLC includes 40 new tracks set in the Big Sand Lands, an apocalypse-inspired environment that will be built up and destroyed throughout the stages, and a new Banshee bike. Riders of Doom also adds "hundreds" of new editor objects to the level editor and has 10 new Skill Games, including an infinite series of generated extreme obstacles.

If the world is going to end, you might as well go out playing Trials Evolution.

Ubisoft's last update on sales figures was three weeks after Trials: Evolution launched, when RedLynx's latest hit the half-million mark. Trials: Evolution also established the record for "highest grossing day-sales in Xbox Live Arcade history" before Minecraft came in and shattered it.

"Origin of Pain" takes you on a tour of Paine Island, which boasts 36 new tracks spanning "lost temples, a haunted circus, deserted beaches and a menacing volcano," for 400 MS Points ($5). We've seen people pay more just for the menacing volcano.

Origin of Pain adds a new BMX dirt bike, with its own tracks and special event, while the elaborate track editor gets support for "teleporting, gun firing, switch filters and vector math." Finally, Origin of Pain includes ten new multiplayer tracks because, well, misery just loves company, doesn't it?

Ubisoft just ran a short promo reel for its free-to-play program at its E3 press conference, and at the very end, the company included the screen above. You'll notice that there are a few curious entries on there, including Trials Evolution, I Am Alive, and Beyond Good and Evil HD, among a few other popular and well-known console games.

Presumably, this means that Ubisoft has released or is working on free-to-play, probably browser-based variants of all of these titles. Ubisoft has previously released From Dust on Google's Chrome browser-based marketplace, and so that's the most likely avenue for the rest of these titles. We'll talk to Ubisoft about this at E3 this week; It'd definitely be great to see Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes as a free-to-play title in a browser near you.

Because a lot of "corrupted data" made it on to the leaderboards at launch, according to RedLynx, the multiplayer scoreboards in Trials Evolution will be reset when the patch goes live at 2:00 AM PDT Wednesday morning. Single-player leaderboards, player-created track leaderboards, and multiplayer ranks won't be affected by this change.

RedLynx recommends that players stay out of multiplayer for four to six hours after the update, in order to make sure that any scores earned are recorded correctly. What else can you do between the hours of two and eight AM? Sleeping is one option. Just throwing that out there.

This week, Ubisoft revealed that the latest Trials franchise entry - Trials Evolution - sold approximately 500,000 units since its launch in mid-April.

Sure, it's no Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition, but half a million sales in less than a month is quite impressive for a title on Xbox Live Arcade. How impressive, you ask? Well, we'd love to tell you, but Microsoft doesn't release sales numbers for XBLA games. Those rascals! For context's sake, though, we'd point out that it took just over a year for the first Trials game on XBLA to hit 1 million units sold. We get the feeling it'll take a bit less time with Evolution.

In the same slide, RedLynx is called out as having many brands with "great multiplatform potential." A quick glance at RedLynx's catalog confirms our suspicion that Trials is indeed the Finnish studio's biggest "brand." How about that!

It debuts on Fridays in Engadget's digital magazine, Distro.
Trials Evolution might just be the perfect video game. The subject matter doesn't seem worthy of the adjective, as it mostly involves a subject colliding with matter face-first after being catapulted from a motorcycle into an unimpressed log. It's just a simple, repeatable exercise in balancing a bike, which you steer through an insane obstacle course for no reason other than to succeed and see some flashy fireworks at the end.

So, perhaps it's not the greatest or most important creation to emerge from an industry packed with intelligent designers and bold artists. It is, however, a perfect encapsulation of what drives any good game. Trials is like a transparent cube - a simple shape to house and display the same gears that turn within more elaborate machines. (It also costs $15, so a comparison to one of those gaudy, see-through Swatches from the '90s might be more apt.)

The error, which resulted in newly created high-ranking tracks being promoted at the expense of older, equally awesome tracks has been corrected by making lifetime user ratings part of the calculation. This means that, old or new, the best user-created content should float to the top.

We tried our hand at creating a Trials Evolution course, once. The idea was that the player would ride a motorcycle down an infinite ramp, gaining speed as they did so until they went so fast that they traveled back in time to the very creation of the universe, where they would instantly asphyxiate in the unforgiving void of space. Sadly, no one on staff had the time, patience or motivation to actually make any of that stuff happen, so what we ended up with was the Trials Evolution equivalent of a macaroni doodle.

Such a big deal, apparently, that Microsoft says it's the, "highest grossing day-sales in Xbox Live Arcade history." What does that actually mean? Your guess is as good as ours, as Ubisoft unfortunately "don't have any numbers that we can share." At least that's what a rep tells us. Harumph.

Gamasutra, however, sussed out from Xbox Live leaderboards that approximately 100K ruff ryders took to the hills and valleys (and tires and wood and ... you get the idea) of Trials Evolution. Not too shabby for day-one sales on Xbox Live ... we think? At 1200 MS Points ($15), that's approximately $1.5 million gross in a mere 24 hours, so, yeah, not too bad!

I made a huge mistake. "So help me, Richard, if I don't review Trials Evolution," I said back in March, "I'll start walking to Oklahoma right now."

That was when I was younger, more foolish and willing to march to someone's house to get a downloadable game.

The Ben of mid-April, however? He knows better. He knows that a sequel to 2009's Trials HD, expanding greatly on the finely tuned physics masterpiece of the first game, would be a dangerous game to review. Not because it isn't good - sweet lord, it's glorious - but because reviews are things that happen quickly after release. What I want to do with Trials Evolution is play it for another decade. Maybe then - maybe! - I could speak to all the content RedLynx added this time around.

But here we are, and this is a review. So here it is: Trials Evolution is excellent.

On the Deal of the Week front, this week is LEGO themed, with 25 percent off the Games on Demand versions of LEGO Batman, LEGO Indiana Jones and LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga. In the US, that puts LEGO Batman and LEGO Indiana Jones at $15, and LEGO Star Wars at $22.50. Next week, XBLA's NBA Jam: On Fire Edition will be reduced from $15 to $10.

But the closest thing has to be playing games that aren't actually out yet, right? Microsoft is offering PAX East attendees a chance to do just that next weekend.

Major Nelson posted the list of activities and upcoming Kinect and XBLA titles that will be playable at Microsoft's booth, including Trials Evolution, MineCraft: Xbox 360 Edition and Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor. We hear one of our editors really liked that last one when he got a chance to play it earlier this month.

Also of note is a playable build of Dust: An Elysian Tale, the winner of 2009's "Dream-Build-Play" competition. It's currently slated to launch on Xbox Live Arcade in 2012.

Trials Evolution transports the masochistic main character to the world of Playdead's Limbo.

RedLynx created the track using Trials Evolution's built-in track editor, XBLA Fans reports. Now, instead of only dodging pitfalls and explosions, dirtbike dude can also look forward to dodging giant cogs and saw blades when Arcade NEXT kicks off on April 18 with the launch of Trials Evolution.

Also of note: the first batch of screens show no spider, but it's there. Trust us.

Discovered by the folks at Eurogamer, the listing for Trials Evolution (now pulled, but captured above) originally listed the April release before disintegrating into nothingness -- like our chances of reaching the top of the Trials HD leaderboards. As the leaked date falls on a Wednesday, it would follow Microsoft's typical release schedule for the Xbox Live Arcade.

Joystiq has contacted Ubisoft, parent company of the Finnish developer, to find out if they're ready to spill the beans on a release date. We just can't wait to scream at our televisions for fudging up our balance ... again and again.

Trials Evolution is creeping one wheelie flip closer to launch with today's announcement of a "spring 2012" launch window. More exciting than an ambiguous window of four months? The latest trailer which reveals said launch, which showcases the game's surprisingly malleable track editor.

Beyond making crazy tracks to challenge your best friends (and worst enemies -- it is Trials, after all) through Xbox Live, players will be able to create crazy looking first-person shooters and Spy Hunter-esque top down fare. And while that's all plenty thrilling, we're most interested in having an unlimited supply of crazy racetracks to obsess over. Finally, a reason to never stop playing Trials!

"We want to be clear that is not something we did ourselves," RedLynx managing director Tero Virtala told Develop.

Virtala also challenged pirates who snagged a copy of the upcoming Xbox Live Arcade exclusive. "Trials Evolution is a game that makes full use of being continuously connected," he pointed out; online-based additions like leaderboards and online multiplayer are unavailable in the leaked version due to Microsoft's monitoring of hacked Xbox 360s.

A recent PEGI rating clued us in that Trials Evolution will launch sometime soon, but Virtala also teased a "new trailer coming soon which will give people a much better look into everything the game will hold and when they can expect to see it." We're especially interested in that last part.

Trials Evolution would be the second high-profile XBLA game rated by PEGI and noticed by XBLAfans this week, with Fez's classification reported yesterday.

Hmmm, Fez, Trials Evolution and Alan Wake's American Nightmare are all stirring at the same time, with two of the titles pegged as early 2012 launches. Could Microsoft have another House Party ("Winter of Arcade") in the works? If so, and if history is any indication, an announcement should occur in the next couple weeks.

"We will still be working directly with Microsoft to bring Trials Evolution to Xbox Live Arcade once it's ready," RedLynx Director of Marketing and PR Jason Bates told me this morning.

It doesn't look like that'll be this year, however, as Bates explained that the company is taking a "when it's done" attitude to development and the game's launch date. "What we've been holding to is the 'when it's done' approach," Bates said. "We are going to take the time to polish and test the game to the best of our ability before we release it, to ensure it matches the quality people have come to expect from a Trials game."

Trials Evolution will be the last game that RedLynx puts out as an indie studio, as the game is still being published by Microsoft for Xbox Live Arcade, rather than Ubisoft. "We are looking forward to working with Ubisoft to ensure that Trials Evolution does get the attention it deserves when the game arrives," Bates said, though he also admitted that, "Ubisoft will respect the current commitments ... Microsoft is still the publisher of the title." The last Trials entry, Trials HD, has racked up over 2 million sales to date on Xbox Live Arcade -- a franchise Ubisoft is no doubt eyeing for potential future projects at the Finnish studio. Might we suggest TrialsMania? Just a thought!

RedLynx announced the acquisition this morning (evening for the Finland-based outfit) via its forums, where company CEO Rero Virtala explained the decision. "We were attracted by Ubisoft's focus on creativity and quality," he said, also pointing to the publisher's "long-term strategy on both the traditional and digital distribution video game markets."

Ubisoft has been pushing quality digital titles hard over the last year, with everything from unique one-offs like Outland and From Dust to re-releases of classics like TMNT, Prince of Persia, and Beyond Good & Evil HD. The publisher was no doubt attracted to RedLynx's massively popular Trials series, which is set to receive a sequel in the coming months.

The tricky test of speed, momentum and balance is set to return to Xbox Live Arcade this year with Trials Evolution, a sequel to two-million seller Trials HD.

Finnish developer Redlynx claims that it took its time in "carefully planning and developing" the follow-up before making today's announcement. "We listened carefully to all the feedback we received from the previous game and added it to our own vision of what the ultimate Trials game could be, coming up with a gamer's wish list of must-play features," said creative director Antti Ilvessuo.

Judging by the teaser trailer posted after the break, it seems gamers no longer want to be alone in leaning just a little too far over the handle bars.
