It all starts with the PS3 entry, which has had its price shot, run over and exploded down to a manageable $29.99 for the next week.

PS One Classics Twisted Metal and Twisted Metal 2 are both on sale for $4.99 each; Twisted Metal Black, the PS2 entry in the series, is on sale for $7.99 - you may recall it was included in first edition copies of 2012's Twisted Metal gratis. If purchasing piecemeal isn't your idea of a good deal, you can get everything together in the Twisted Birthday Bundle for $39.99.

Last year's Twisted Metal made its PSN debut in October for $40 - if you missed out on Eat Sleep Play's entry in the long-running series, be sure to read our review.
Twisted Metal series on sale this week on PSN originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 12 Feb 2013 17:30:00 EST. The game will also see a drop in price, as it will be available on the service for $40.

Creative Director David Jaffe said the game was "not a dud, not a hit" back in August. Jaffe left Twisted Metal developer Eat Sleep Play after the game's launch in March. Avi and Ari Arad (who formerly worked with Marvel on the Spider-Man series, among other projects) are said to be producing the movie, should it come to fruition.

If the deal pans out, the screenplay would follow the story of the games, pitting a series of vehicular combatants, including the iconic Doll Face and Sweet Tooth, against each other in a tournament to win a wish from the devilish Calypso. We don't have a lot of attachment to the game's "story," so we already expect Taylor to take all of the liberties he wants. We do have one fan request, though: Can we get a David Jaffe cameo? Jaffe sat down with our own Alexander Sliwinski during this week's DICE summit for a segment on The Joystiq Show, during which he elaborated on his waning presence at Eat Sleep Play and his plans for creating a new studio based out of San Diego.

"I will be with Eat Sleep Play until we finish what's called the 'maintenance contract' we have and have been working on with Sony. That will allow us, post-launch, to stay and address issues that there's no way we can know of. Cleaning things up in terms of balance, bugs, tuning, tweaks." This maintenance contract expires at the end of March, at which point Jaffe plans on cultivating new ideas, as well as a new team, for his fledgling studio.

"There's no corporate filings, there's no official company name yet; 99 percent of my day is Twisted Metal right now. There's four games I would love to do, the one I do really depends on the team I can put together and the money that I can find to make it." His ideas for new titles include both console and browser-based offerings, with a "guerilla-style" survival-horror thrown in for good measure: "There's a survival-horror genre in there, a real low-budget survival horror, kinda guerilla film making style. Not in terms of the look, but in terms of that kind of financing and that kind of production."

Jaffe recently told Game Informer that there are no sequel or DLC plans for Twisted Metal, although that doesn't mean he's left the series for good. "You never know what the future holds, I'd love to make another Twisted down the road with these guys one day, if that opportunity presents itself." For now, though, Jaffe's focus is on building new experiences with new IPs.
Jaffe outlines plans post-Eat Sleep Play; no Twisted Metal DLC or sequel planned originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 09 Feb 2012 14:00:00 EST. Over on the PlayStation Blog, David Jaffe reveals that early adopters of Sony's upcoming Twisted Metal reboot will get a bonus game free of charge. Each "Limited Edition" copy of Twisted Metal will be bundled with a download code for Twisted Metal: Black, the 2001 PS2 title, as "a thank you to our hardcore fans," Jaffe notes.

The download voucher will only be included in the first pressing of the game - similar examples of recent memory include Battlefield 3 and Bulletstorm, both of which included bonuses in their first pressings - though Jaffe didn't say how many "Limited Edition" copies would be sent out to retail. Twisted Metal launches in North America on February 14, 2012.
Twisted Metal includes Twisted Metal: Black download code originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 28 Dec 2011 17:02:00 EST. When Twisted Metal co-creator David Jaffe tweeted back in June about his interest in a "low-budget slasher movie" starring TM character Sweet Tooth, Blue Goggles Films took the idea and ran with it. The studio recently cut its first trailer for Twisted Metal: Home Sweet Home, and we checked in with both Jaffe and Blue Goggles to gauge the reception. "Fucking fantastic -- and yes, please quote me on that," was Jaffe's initial response. "Just great and totally the kind of thing I want to see happen with the character."

Blue Goggles, of course, had no idea what kind of response to expect upon the trailer's release. "We've lived in a bubble for the past month while we were making it and, while we thought the project was going to be cool, we didn't know if other people would," director Ben Moody told us. He confirmed the genesis of the idea, saying, "The whole concept for the trailer was directly inspired by Jaffe's quote/tweet about wanting a Sweet Tooth slasher movie for the PSN."

As for the project's future, both Jaffe and Blue Goggles would like to see Sony pick up the would-be feature (the film is currently planned as a free release since Blue Googles does not have the rights to commercially distribute it.). "This is what needs to happen: a straight-to-PSN Sweet Tooth slasher flick! Will it happen? I dunno -- but man I hope so!" Jaffe urged. "Either way, this fan film is really, really cool. What a neat thing to see. Whoever made it -- thank you! Great job that captures the low budget slasher flicks of the '80s that I hold so near and dear to my heart. Now let's just hope Sony jumps on board and we can get a whole feature out of it!"

Moody is equally enthusiastic, saying, "Since we've seen such a great response in just one day, we plan to get in touch with Jaffe and Sony to see if they are interested in making a full-on slasher movie starring Sweet Tooth for the PSN."

As of publishing, Sony had yet to respond to our request for comment.
Jaffe loves fan-made Twisted Metal movie, wants one on PSN originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 29 Oct 2010 18:00:00 EST. Wait ... you're telling us that of all of the PSOne blockbusters that have made it onto the PlayStation Store, the original Twisted Metal hasn't actually made its arrival yet? We weren't aware of this surprising fact until we noticed that the ESRB recently slapped a Teen rating on the series' first installment, due out on the PS3 and PSP -- the usual indication that a title is awaiting release on the PSOne Classics platform.

Seriously, we could have sworn that Twisted Metal was already readily available on the PSN. Is it possible that -- oh, wait a minute. We see what we did here. We confused Twisted Metal with Bomberman Fantasy Race again. Our bad!
ESRB rates Twisted Metal for PSOne Classics platform originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 19 Oct 2010 02:00:00 EST. We've been fooled before by Twisted Metal creator David Jaffe and his Twitter account, so we'll treat his recent statements expressing interest in making a Sweet Tooth-based, "low-budget slasher movie," with with the same trepidation we reserve for buying ice cream from an evil clown. That said, his phrasing is pretty straightforward: "I want us to make an honest to goodness, low-budget slasher movie and sell it on PSN exclusive. Peeps saying we are making a PSN Sweet Tooth GAME got it wrong."

He later clarified that the "Sweet Tooth PSN thing" he wants to do "is a MOVIE on PSN, like THE TESTER in terms of exclusive PSN programming ... not a game." Perhaps his brief involvement with ... The Tester gave him a taste of almost-television stardom that he just can't let go? Or maybe it's just his love for low-budget slash flicks. We're not totally sure, but you can bet we've reached out for comment from the man himself.
Jaffe's got a filmmaking Sweet Tooth for PSN originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 24 Jun 2010 19:00:00 EST. Just before E3 2010, we asked Twisted Metal creator David Jaffe to confirm that he wasn't working on a new entry in the long-dormant car combat franchise, per a series of messages he released via Twitter. And confirm that he did. Unfortunately for us -- though perhaps not for gamers -- it turns out that his words to us were actually part of a larger plan of "misdirection," as he told us in an interview one day after last week's big reveal.

Aside from our initial harassment about what he told us in the past, we spoke with him about what he wants out of E3, what he's most excited about in his forthcoming game, the current trend of series reboots in the game industry, and what else is going on at Eat Sleep Play (the studio he co-heads with Scott Campbell) -- among many other things. And though we were initially hurt by his "misdirection," the fact that he was a perfect gentleman during the interview helped to mend those wounds. Continue after the break for our conversation.
David Jaffe is a big fat liar. He's a liarface. But at E3, he was finally able to tell the truth: Twisted Metal for PS3. The return of this beloved demolition murder derby series isn't so much a surprise as it is a relief for dedicated fans, fingers sore from begging for an original console sequel on any forum that will listen. Still in pre-alpha (and in the garage until 2011), Twisted Metal is up and running at Sony's E3 booth.

A 15-player demo (the game does support up to 16 players) staged in the "Slaughterdale" map showcased what Santa Monica Studios producer Chad Cox called the key feature of the new Twisted Metal: "online factions." While there will be free-for-all gametypes, the team-based matches appear to be the feature modes. You pick a side: in the demo, Clowns or Dolls (though more factions are to be revealed), and then you're free to choose and change your vehicle throughout a match; much like you might change up your character class or loadout in an online shooter before you respawn.
David Jaffe just emerged onstage at the PlayStation keynote in a surprise reveal: Twisted Metal. The series is returning to PlayStation consoles in an all new iteration on PS3, complete with flight. Yes, you read that correctly: you'll be able to fly helicopters in Twisted Metal. You'll be able to get your vehicular slaughter on in 2011 or, if you're an E3 attendee, you can check it out on the show floor now.
Twisted Metal crashes onto PS3 in 2011 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 15 Jun 2010 16:48:00 EST. Aside from answering questions about the current state of documentary film and divulging his current love affair with Black Rock Studios' Split/Second, Eat Sleep Play head David Jaffe is busy bustin' through speculation about his current game project. "By the way, I WISH we were making a new Twisted Metal. Making [a] game you've already worked on is tons easier cuz your core blueprint is already there. This new game design stuff tho? Man, that is hard ... reason I'm so stressed these days!" Jaffe recently tweeted.

Jaffe also suggested that his studio's current project is unlikely to be revealed during E3. "Sony has not asked us and given it's 3 weeks away, my guess is u r correct: no Eat Sleep Play game at E3," he tweeted, busting through his own expectations from last year. So, he's presumably working on a car-based game, but it's not Twisted Metal ... uh, the Indiana Jones (mine) kart racer we've all been waiting for, perhaps?

Update: David Jaffe told Joystiq via email this morning, "As for my Twitter, I stand by what I said: we are not making a new Twisted Metal altho [sic] I think doing one WOULD be fun...but we simply are not. Also a game by Eat Sleep Play will NOT be at E3 2010. I can't speak to what we ARE working on because it's not my place to."

Update from E3 2010: What David Jaffe meant to say was, "We are making a new Twisted Metal. A game by Eat Sleep Play WILL be at E3 2010."
It was only a matter of time before beta testers of ModNation Racers would start recreating classic gaming icons. However, this Mod-recreated version of Twisted Metal's Sweet Tooth seems simultaneously cute, murderous and appropriate for the weapons-based racer.

Series creator David Jaffe posted this (and a number of other Twisted Metal Mods) on his blog, proudly proclaiming that "Twisted Metal on PS3!" would be "a cool idea." We're inclined to agree.
Twisted Metal's Sweet Tooth becomes a ModNation Racer originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 07 Jan 2010 18:15:00 EST. David Jaffe will be roaming the halls at next week's E3. His mysterious new project, however, "absolutely" won't make an appearance. In fact, the Twisted Metal creator noted on his latest video blog that he's "not showing anything" at the big show.

Commented Jaffe, "Part of me would love to announce at E3, and so you walk into the Sony booth and bam -- there's our game." Next year, however, is another story. The Eat Sleep Play co-founder says that he "fully expects" the presumably car-heavy game to be on the show floor in 2010. Certainly no later than that.
Jaffe 'not showing anything' at E3, definitely next year originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 26 May 2009 09:40:00 EST. Oh, Jaffe. You really shouldn't be posting images of secret internal emails on your blog, even if you have applied heavy blurring to some of the more pertinent sections. Now we know your dark secret: your next game will involve cars. That's right, some photoshop whizz managed to see through the image's blurred section -- which probably explains why Jaffe has replaced the blurring with solid chunks of red, but the damage has already been done.

The super secret information does indeed reveal that the game involves cars, as evident from the lines "dragging him behind your car" and "when he is launched out of a car." The email also states that character animation for the "human characters" needs improvement because "right now it's so dry, it needs to feel like an action movie." Cars and humans? This game is going to be awesome.

All joking aside, this could indicate that Jaffe is currently working on a Twisted Metal sequel. Or it could not. It could be another car game entirely. With human characters. The blog post mentions a big milestone at the end of the month, which may mean we'll be seeing whatever game this is at E3 in early June.

Remember David Jaffe? Y'know, that guy that made Twisted Metal and God of War? He made his own studio after the tiring effort put into the PS2 God of War games. Since then, we've seen small hints at his next game (which is supposedly a new Twisted Metal for PS3). According to a recent post made on his personal blog, he's "going to visit Sony" to talk about his new game. "My gut/guess tells me we're looking sometime in 2010. Certainly not later than that. Perhaps sooner."

Sooner would certainly be nicer. However, with no concrete details about his next game available yet, it does seem like 2010 is a guess as good as any.
If you're not making sense of the mess that's leaked out of Jaffe's little red pen, don't worry, you're not alone. There's a reason why most developers choose to keep the uglier side of game design in house. But then, David Jaffe isn't most developers. If we squint hard enough, we can just barely see the outline of a Twisted Metal level (at least, that's the going theory) -- oh, and a Spider-Man head. Wow dude, if this Eat Sleep Play thing doesn't work out, you should totally try out for Marvel! (And yes, we actually dialed that 1-800 number...)

Anyway, glad to hear Jaffe's getting his "core" computer back up to speed. We can't imagine what's it's been like to be stuck with Windows and Internet Explorer. Gross.
Jaffe previews next Eat Sleep Play game originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 12 Aug 2008 22:00:00 EST. We heart you, Dave, and it's not just because you created God of War. No, it's due to your unwavering frankness when it comes to the sheer silliness of the games industry. Case in point: game names. For those of you listening in on this virtual cheek pinch, we're talking about Jaffe's latest blog post about how sometimes it's not the quality of the game, but the cleverness of its name which determines if it'll sell.

Jaffe breaks it down for us, then divulges some names that might have been slapped on a couple of his games in an alternate universe. Twisted Metal? Try Cars and Rockets. Oh, and God of War was at one time Dark Odyssey. Did we interrupt you from playing Metal Gear Solid 4? Enough about that! Let's talk about something random and fun (and gloat about our amazingly awesome photoshop skills). David Jaffe updated his blog recently and spoke out about some of his greatest franchises and titles that simply didn't stick for them. In fact, Kratos from God of War was going to have a very, very different name.

Twisted Metal could have been named the following: Urban Assault, Cars and Rockets, High Octane, or Firestorm. All of these are sexy names in their own way. Calling All Cars might have been named Criminal Crackdown or Damage in an alternate dimension. God of War emerged after brainstorming names like At The Hands Of The Gods, Dark Odyssey, Omega, or just the Greek omega symbol with no real name. Kratos was going to be named Dominus -- the developers ousted this name by joking "get the door; it's Dominus" for a year. There you have it. Think Jaffe and crew chose the best names after all?
Some interesting alternate game titles scrapped by David Jaffe originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 12 Jun 2008 19:30:00 EST. Not a bad week for PC Store content. The American store gets the same two demos as the Europeans have along with a full PSP game, Twisted Metal: Head-On. No doubt a timed cash-in considering the PS2 port was recently released. Here's the full release list:

MLB 08 The Show demo (free)

Patapon demo (free)

Twisted Metal: Head-On full game ($14.99)

Twisted Metal: Head-On Behind the Scenes video 3 (free)

Twisted Metal: Head-On Behind the Scenes video 4 (free)

Twisted Metal: Head-On PSP Wallpaper (free)

Have you started downloading the Patapon demo yet? Why not! Get it started.
American PC Store updates for February 14th originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 14 Feb 2008 17:30:00 EST. Sure enough, "buried deep" (well, not that deep) within Twisted Metal: Head On - Extra Twisted Edition is the answer to every Metal head's burning <strike>headache</strike>, er, desire: METAL IS COMING ON PSTHREE. The code, embedded in the game's "Dark Past" documentary as a series of numbers, ensures the franchise will take at least one more victory lap before puttering into uncertainty. Just how Jaffe and company plan to overhaul the oh-so-90s motif, remains the one, true secret. May we suggest going hybrid?
We've loved trying to find hidden messages in games since we first saw one of Levelord's "You're not supposed to be here!" signposts in Duke Nukem 3D. Rarely are such messages announcements regarding upcoming titles, but one hidden code found by some GameFAQs forumers in the Twisted Metal: Head-On "DARK PAST" documentary. Groups of numbers appear on screen at points during the video which correspond to letters of the alphabet. When deciphered the message reads "Metal is coming on PSThree". Despite the minor grammatical error, it's safe to assume the message is intentional and, therefore, true.

So it seems Twisted Metal will be heading to PS3 at some point in the future. Is anyone truly surprised? We know Jaffe has signed a three game contract with Sony for the PS3 so we would've been very surprised if at least one wasn't Twisted Metal related. Now that the message has been found, we'll probably start hearing more about the game. We hope.

Update: Confirmed.
Conspiracy: Twisted Metal heading to PS3 [Update] originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 07 Feb 2008 13:30:00 EST. We know this this looks, well, like a PS2 game. And we know that the metal/goth trappings are a little bit late 90s. But we can not help but be excited for Twisted Metal: Head On Extra Twisted Edition. And this new gameplay footage (posted by one Mr. David Jaffe) isn't doing anything to make us less pumped.

What you're seeing is "Carnival of Darkness," a bonus level lifted from Twisted Metal Black 2, which never saw the light of day. Two things you might not have known about David Jaffe: He likes ridiculously long game titles (a colon and a dash? You have outdone yourself, sir), and he also loves bonus features in games. This is why Twisted Metal: Head On - Extra Twisted Edition for the PS2 features a wealth of new content not seen in the PSP version.

The included content includes new levels, several of which were originally designed for Twisted Metal: Black, access to an online soundtrack, an art book, a 30-minute making-of documentary, a new "Sweet Tour" mode, and ending footage originally shot for the first Twisted Metal game. Oh yeah, and the port of the PSP game is in there too, with an improved framerate and textures.

Considering the game will retail for $19.99 USD, that's a whole lot of content included. TM:HO-ETE is scheduled for a February release in the States.
Twisted Metal: Head On - Extra Twisted Edition stuffed with features originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 15 Jan 2008 11:30:00 EST. He notes that if he could figure out how to freeze time and still make it home for dinner with the family -- and if Sony would let him work on the project -- he'd do it. Jaffe says that he had a "master plan" for the God of War story when he was still with Sony and that the Santa Monica team has his notes -- but whether they want to follow them is their choice.

That's just one small part of a large interview done by GameDaily BIZ with Jaffe. In the full interview, he discusses his new studio Eat, Sleep, Play and what it's like focusing on medium-sized titles. There's a pretty frank discussion about how he just couldn't get into BioShock -- he blames being too focused on the "nuts and bolts of play mechanics." Sony's PC-based Playstation Store launched in late November with very little fan-fare -- a move that seemed somewhat uncharacteristic of the confident console maker. Still, despite the company's best efforts to downplay the service, MTV's Stephen Totilo sees what he feels could be the future of the industry.

In an interview with Playstation's director of network operations Eric Lempel, Totilo learns pretty much everything there is to know about the Playstation Store, including the decision to restrict the downloads to PC (as opposed to allowing purchases directly from the PSP's browser). The interview also reveals more titles coming to PSPs via the download service, including SOCOM: Fire Team Bravo and Twisted Metal: Head On.
MTV talks Playstation Store in thorough interview originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 04 Dec 2007 17:25:00 EST. It doesn't hurt that this trailer for the upcoming PSP-to-PS2 port of Twisted Metal: Head On (now subtitled the Extra Twisted Edition) makes no efforts to seem hip or modern, sticking to the edgy, dark, metal-inspired pastiche that's been a series hallmark since its inception more than a decade ago.

If you're old enough to remember Sweet Tooth and the rest of the upwardly mobile monsters he associated with (or just like making cars explode) this new offering seems to be a pretty solid deal, jam-packed with new levels, updated graphics and a bevy of bonus features. As a coming-out party for David Jaffe's Eat Sleep Play, this "everything old is new again" approach seems like a good choice. It's one he explained further today on Sony's official blog where he wrote that working on a new Twisted Metal game was "like coming home." PSP Fanboy has been reviewing all of the PS1 re-releases from the PS Store. They recently added three more games, all of which are playable (upscaled!) on the PS3. Here are a few excerpts, but to check them all out, visit PSP Fanboy.

Wipeout - Ultimately, the game's true shortcoming is well ... how short it is. With so few tracks and ships to choose from, one can't help but think that $6 is the absolute most you should pay for this trip down memory lane. A solid game -- but there's far better options. 6.5

Spyro the Dragon - With frequent save points, fast load times, and generally solid gameplay, Insomniac's early platformer still manages to impress. The gameplay is admittedly on the simplistic side, but there is no doubt that nearly a decade ago, Insomniac was pushing some truly impressive tech. The graphics are silky smooth, and the Sypro character lives with animation akin to that of the Ratchet series. The game looks as good as an average PSP game (albeit running in 4:3). 7.5

Twisted Metal 2 - There's a reason why Twisted Metal was so beloved: it had a lot of personality, with its apocalyptic levels and crazed vehicle designs. The relentless difficulty of the game and simplistic presentation take a lot away from this re-release, but at $6, it's still a fairly solid retread to invest in, especially for portable gamers. 6.0
Retro Reviews round-up: Spyro & Twisted Metal originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 06 Nov 2007 08:00:00 EST. Twisted Metal 2
Price: $5.99
Original Release Date: October 31, 1996

Recommended.
Once again, another stellar retro classic hits the PS Store, for play on both PSP and PS3. Twisted Metal 2 is an improved sequel of the most definitive car combat game of all time. There's a reason why Twisted Metal was so beloved: it had a lot of personality, with its apocalyptic levels and crazed vehicle designs. The relentless difficulty of the game and simplistic presentation take a lot away from this re-release, but at $6, it's still a fairly solid retread to invest in, especially for portable gamers.

Once again, the simple controls work well on the PSP (using control type 2). The cars are incredibly responsive, and can make unrealistically sharp turns at a moment's notice. It felt weird using Square to accelerate (instead of X), but there are very few surprises in the controls. Weapons are easy to switch between, and they're easy to use as well. It can become problematic to find enemies in the game's relatively large levels, but when competition is near, it's fast and furious.

Overall, what hurts this retro game is how difficult it is. There's multiple choices, but it's not easy to take down a racer, and health upgrades are few and far apart. It'll take a lot of luck and skill to survive the game's championship mode. Thankfully, the ability to play individual tracks will help you discover the locations of secrets, giving you a much-needed edge in a rather unfair fight.
Retro Review: 6.0
