It's not a Tears for Fears reference, nor is it access to Prince's 1980s clothing selections! Nope, Infinity Blade 2's "Vault of Tears" is actually a massive (free) content update headed to Epic's latest iOS entry this Thursday.

Several new enemies are being added, as well as "more than 50 new items" and rewards. Most bizarrely, the ability to "earn extra turns and invite their friends, family, and other non-Infinity Blade players to do in-game damage with the power of liking and re-tweeting battle calls." You read that right, folks: "the power of liking and re-tweeting battle calls." In the biz, we call that a "paradigm shift." Also, awful.

Gallery: Infinity Blade 2 (Vault of Tears)

Continue reading Unleash 'The Power of Liking' in Infinity Blade 2's 'Vault of Tears' this Thursday (tissues not included)

Unleash 'The Power of Liking' in Infinity Blade 2's 'Vault of Tears' this Thursday (tissues not included) originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 21 May 2012 11:50:00 EST. Edmund McMillen and Tommy Refenes of Team Meat announced via Twitter today that they're rebuilding Super Meat Boy from scratch for a potential launch on mobile touch devices.

In a six-part tweetfest, Team Meat disclosed the following details: The touch title will be remade from scratch and won't play like Super Meat Boy; it will be a larger, more traditional game, unlike titles such as Doodle Jump; and they promised it won't use "shitty touch controls."

"if you liked SMB im sure you will enjoy this (if its good enough to continue on :) ) we just had a few cool ideas and wanted a challange," one of Team Meat's tweets reads.

Team Meat said that if the project fails and turns out to not be any fun, they'll scrap it and move on to the next idea, which we can only assume is a Super Meat Boy live-action point-and-click adventure title in 3D. Those adventure things are all the rage these days, we're told.
Super Meat Boy to be torn apart, rebuilt for touchscreen devices originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 09 Feb 2012 13:30:00 EST. Enter: Notch.

After learning of Schafer's problem, Markus "Notch" Persson, creator of Minecraft and resident indie millionaire, tweeted at Schafer, "Let's make Psychonauts 2 happen," followed by ";D Also, I'm serious." Namco producer Katsuhiro Harada is leading up production of Tekken X Street Fighter -- he's the Yoshinori Ono of Namco, if you will. And like his Capcom counterpart, Harada has repeatedly taken to Twitter to answer fan questions about his current project, most recently telling one Twitter user that he's currently "considering" a Vita port of the title.

He didn't mention much else, unfortunately, though he did take time to promote an upcoming community vote via the game's Facebook page, that'll allow fans to choose which characters end up in the upcoming fighter. One follower suggested both Final Fight's famed crossdresser, Poison, as well as Street Fighter Alpha 3's Karin. We're gonna go out on a limb and ask Harada for Ryu and Eddy Gordo. Those guys never get any time in the spotlight!
Harada 'considering' Tekken X Street Fighter on Vita originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 16 Jan 2012 20:45:00 EST. Someone at British brick-and-mortar franchise Game seems to have confirmed our expectant attitude towards EA's Need for Speed franchise. The British retail outlet's Twitter account documented a trip to EA for a presentation, and casually noted plans for a new Need for Speed ("Need for Speed 13!"), not to mention a word on the as-yet-unseen Medal of Honor sequel. As Eurogamer reports, the tweet is no longer available, though other volleys from the account confirm the retailer's presence at an EA presentation.

EA has spoken about a Medal of Honor sequel in the past, though this is the first we've heard of it in quite some time. It's said to be developed by EA's Danger Close studio, and we're not sure if Battlefield studio EA DICE will be once more tasked with handling the multiplayer component. Meanwhile, following the pattern of annual Need for Speed releases, it's likely that Burnout studio Criterion will be tasked with the thirteenth (!!) entry in the series.

We've reached out to EA for comment, but aren't expecting much more than some light under its breath cursing.

Update: In response to this report, an EA rep told Joystiq, "We do not comment on rumor or speculation."
As if the saga of Fake Peter Molyneux weren't an exciting enough Twitter story, today we were introduced to Faux Shigeru Miyamoto, who creates amazing Flash games using classic Nintendo characters. Both Mario and Kirby are lampooned in Flash on the impersonator's Tumblr site, as well as the legendary creator himself of course. Presumably the totally-not-retiring slash potentially retiring developer isn't just pulling a fast one on us all, and we very much doubt these are prototypes for that original game he's making.

Regardless, we suggest one thing before heading into any of the games on said site: turn your volume way, way down. Or up, if you're extremely hard of hearing, but otherwise, ya know, it's super loud. Deafeningly so.
Fake Miyamoto takes to Twitter and revitalizes Nintendo franchises in Flash originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 06 Jan 2012 15:15:00 EST.

It appears as though S.T.A.L.K.E.R. franchise dev GSC Game World may not be giving up, at least not yet, with an ambiguous Twitter message from the company's official feed stating, "We will do our best to continue. However, at this point, nothing is certain."

Last last week when reports of GSC's closure were still fresh, the feed reportedly had a message which read, "No we have not closed GSC or cancelled," but it was said to be deleted soon after, according to Edge. A followup missive from the company notes that the website "will continue, with the forum and tech support." Additionally, the GSC shop will apparently carry on "until the nearest planned items sell out."

While the company may not be entirely closed yet, these messages read like little more than the death rattle of a business on its last legs, sadly. Given the circumstances, it stands to reason that development of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 has stopped, though its unclear what will happen to the IP.
"Just stuck my fingers up @rockstar_north (aka pig factory) and walked out. Cog in a machine? Not anymore, now I'M the machine," the mysterious Peter "Molydeux" Twitter account proprietor and UK game developer exclaimed this morning on his second Twitter account, "@dougiedeux." As previous interviews have revealed, the man behind the fake -- and often hilarious -- Twitter account "@petermolydeux" is a game developer who's worked on a variety of high profile titles. It appears his latest work was with Grand Theft Auto V studio Rockstar North, based out of Edinburgh, Scotland. Is that high profile enough?

Anyway, after "Molydeux" was banished from Twitter recently -- a result of an unknown user or users "reporting" his faux account to the Twitter mothership, possibly confused with the actual Peter Molyneux -- followers, friends, and media outlets voiced concern. Where would we be without his hilarious game design proposals every day? Nowhere, that's where!

Thankfully, Twitter reinstated the account as of today, with two messages from its operator thanking supporters and promoting his other account, "@dougiedeux." With that account, he plans on running an ongoing dev diary of his indie project, post-Rockstar North. That project? "Save the UK Games Industry from collapse." Good luck, mystery man!
Peter Molydeux (note: still not Peter Molyneux) returns to Twitter, challenges UK game industry originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 01 Dec 2011 21:00:00 EST. Ryan Langley is a level designer at Halfbrick Studios, so he's used to putting secret rewards in hard-to-find places, but in this case he found one. He discovered that both LucasArts and BioWare have filed for a classification in the Australian government for a computer game called Paper, Scissors, Stone. Unfortunately, we have no idea what that is at all.

The classification does mention that it's related to "science fiction themes" and that the game will have "online content." When you combine that with the fact that both LucasArts and BioWare are listed on the mark (along with publisher EA), it's possible that, even despite the M rating for mature audiences, this could have something to do with the upcoming The Old Republic MMO. A standalone minigame of some kind? That's just a guess, but yes please on that.

At any rate, we'll probably hear about this one soon. In the meantime, you might want to start practicing your hand signals.
Paper, Scissors, Stone registered by LucasArts and BioWare in Australia originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 30 Nov 2011 21:30:00 EST.
Having spent some time with Engadget's Richard Lai, we can assure you that the charming, British accent heard in this video tour of the PlayStation Vita's Twitter app is just as disarming in person as it is through voiceover. As he soothingly details, the Vita app functions similarly to other iterations of the social network's mobile clients, offering touch support and scrolling, as well as geotagging, hashtags, and photo support.

It remains unclear whether the app will launch alongside the console in various territories, with a Sony rep telling Engadget that the Twitter client isn't finished just yet, and refusing to confirm a same-day launch. The company did, however, march out this gentleman (in the middle) and his amazing haircut.
Engadget takes a tour of the PlayStation Vita Twitter app originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 21 Oct 2011 14:10:00 EST. You are following @petermolydeux on Twitter, right? The always pondering parody of the eminent game developer (that imagines things like a "racing game where you only have 2 speeds," or "a creature who can only eat bullets for survival") is one of our favorite characters on the service -- and it only allows 140, remember? Kotaku AU has a lengthy interview with the anonymous Tweeter in question, and though we didn't get the question of who he actually is answered, we get a lot of other interesting information.

Apparently, the person behind the account is a real game developer, doesn't always agree with Molydeux's snobby dislike of popular titles, and has recently moved out into pitching his crazy game ideas with full videos and documents rather than just his tweets. Interviewer Katie Williams' website has a few more tidbits from the interview, including the fact that Peter Molydeux once applied to Lionhead Studios. He didn't get the job.

He also hints that there may be another parody character on the way: an indie game dev who's "just been fired from a big-name developer, and is declaring war on them by aiming to create the greatest indie game of all time, all within one year." Considering that one of Molydeux's kooky game ideas is being made into a real game, we'd love to hear what that new guy has in store for us.
Parody tweeter 'PeterMolydeux' once applied for work at Lionhead originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 13 Oct 2011 20:45:00 EST. Kevin Butler would be a wonderful Sony VP if he actually existed, and we would be upset to hear of his resignation if it were real. This makes us very emotionally confused about Sony's latest marketing ploy, which has @TheKevinButler tweeting that he's quit Sony to be president of the family flooring business. How do we react when a fake person fake-quits his fake position at a real company? We're not sure, but so far we've been eating a lot of chocolate and manically watching Desperate Housewives.

@TheKevinButler posted two tweets today about the job switch and his profile now reads, "President, Economy Flooring. I'm a man of the people and the people need help. Carpets worn? Hardwoods warped? Linoleum non-linear? Rest Easy, KB's here to help." As legit as this may seem, Sony has hinted at a Twitter-tease, telling Industry Gamers to "stay tuned. We'll have more info on KB's new upstart career shortly. In the meantime, keep following his tweets."
Kevin Butler quits Sony via Twitter, Sony says to 'keep following his tweets' originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 26 Aug 2011 18:30:00 EST. During its GamesCom press conference, Sony revealed a suite of social media stuff that will be downloadable for the PlayStation Vita, joining the Vita-exclusive apps like Near and Party. If you want to let people know what's going on in your life (like, say, "I just played a Vita game" or "I'm about to play a Vita game") you'll be able to do so in Foursquare, Skype, Twitter, or Facebook. Skype was previously hinted at in a Brazilian Sony presentation.

All four apps will be available for free download from the PlayStation Store. The announcement didn't make it clear as to whether any of them would be available at launch, but we're guessing no -- if the apps were ready at launch, they'd probably be pre-loaded on the device.
Continue reading PlayStation Vita gets social with Facebook, Twitter, Skype, and Foursquare apps

PlayStation Vita gets social with Facebook, Twitter, Skype, and Foursquare apps originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 16 Aug 2011 16:50:00 EST. Adding to the list of game-related companies it has attacked, LulzSec yesterday claimed to have stolen and leaked the login and password information for approximately 62,000 "internet accounts," reports the CBC. The stolen info is said to comprise logins/passwords from Facebook, Twitter, "dating sites," PayPal and, notoriously, Xbox Live. It is also claimed that the majority of accounts are from the United states, though several other countries are named in the report.

The account database info is still currently available through the LulzSec website (though we'd suggest not visiting) -- various folks on Twitter responding to the group claim to have done a variety of things with the information, from having a large pack of condoms delivered to an elderly woman, to one person saying they bilked a PayPal account for £250 ($404).

Earlier this week, the group attacked and successfully took down a handful of game industry websites, including EVE Online, Minecraft and The Escapist. All three sites quickly recovered and have been online since. Microsoft has yet to respond to request for comment on yesterday evening's alleged breach.

Update: Microsoft has released a statement, which states that Xbox Live was not compromised to the best of Microsoft's knowledge, and the logins/passwords were released at random, with people encouraged to try said information on services like Xbox Live (among others). "This group appears to have posted a list of thousands of potential email addresses and passwords, and encouraged users to try them across various online sites like Xbox Live in the event one of the users happens to use the same password and email address combination. At this time we do not have any evidence Xbox Live has been compromised. However we take the security of our service seriously and work on an ongoing basis to improve it against evolving threats."
Report: LulzSec hacking group releases thousands of account logins, includes Xbox Live and Facebook [update] originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 17 Jun 2011 19:15:00 EST. When Insomniac revealed plans to develop a multiplatform original IP with EA Partners last year, the company discussed some of its plans, but kept us mostly in the dark. It seems that the covers will be ripped asunder tomorrow during EA's E3 press conference, as Insomniac noted on its official Twitter feed.

"In case you missed it -- we are announcing our new universe and multiplatform game at EA's press conference," the feed announced yesterday.

We'll be honest -- the latest teaser posted on Facebook for the forthcoming Assassin's Creed game reveal was outright baffling to us. Despite containing major clues like the very clear image you see above (an Ottoman Tughra) and a string of numbers flashed twice ("24061459"), not to mention the friggin' Hagia Sofia (it's kinda famous), we somehow didn't put together that the teaser was very seriously hinting at an Istanbul setting for the next game. Thankfully, Turkish gaming site Oyungezer has plenty of insight to offer.

The string of numbers? That's a stand-in for "June 24, 1459," or for you Auditore family historians, Ezio's date of birth. And the Ottoman Tughra? Turns out that's an official seal or signature for a sultan, used to sign official documents and for money printing, among other things. It's like Prince's symbol, basically, except it originates with the Ottoman Empire rather than an egomaniacal musician.

Anyway, between the major landmark (Hagia Sofia) and the Tughra, we're guessing the big reveal will somehow center on Istanbul, potentially in the mid-1400s. As for when we'll find out, your guess is as good as ours -- the meter towards the next teaser is at 20 percent as of now, with no indication of how many unveilings are left in Ubisoft's plan.

Update: The fifth teaser has now gone live, and it features a man who looks suspiciously like Assassin's Creed 1's main character, Altair. It also features a two-headed eagle -- a symbol quite popular in the Byzantine Empire -- and the number string "11011165," which is presumably a placeholder for January 11, 1165. What happened on the eleventh day of January, 1165, you ask? That's a good question. Other than some unexciting interactions with Russia, not much was happening in Constantinople/Istanbul that day. Perhaps the next teaser will clue us in!
You remember that crazy Assassin's Creed teaser site that Ubisoft briefly launched late last week before pulling it down and pretending nothing happened? Turns out the French publisher is interested in promoting its next AC game after all, as the Facebook posting has reappeared and a trio of teaser videos are now available (found after the break).

The latest of the videos shows what appears to be the first Assassin's Creed's main protagonist, Altair, though the only portion unobscured with distortion is -- naturally -- his hidden blade. Some vaguely Assassin's Creed 1-looking buildings can also be seen in the upper left corner, potentially hinting at a return to the Middle Eastern setting for the next game in the series.

Folks interested in helping speed the reveal process for the next game can choose from a variety of social media-tied means to assist, though the progress bar for the reveal is reflecting just a four percent completion as of right now. While we're really interested in finding out what the next AC game is, we'd never outright suggest spamming your Facebook/Twitter for game reveal countdowns. We'll just say this: Do what you think is right.
Continue reading Assassin's Creed reveal campaign reactivated, third teaser clip appears

Assassin's Creed reveal campaign reactivated, third teaser clip appears originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 02 May 2011 13:30:00 EST. Arrowhead already created the funniest premise for an expansion this year with Magicka: Vietnam, and it seems the developer has already decided how it will follow up that triumph: Player-vs-player combat.

A pair of messages on the game's official Twitter page read, "How about an achievement for defeating a developer/paradox? A good way to vent your frustration - yes? Wait, we need PvP for that ... we better build it right after#MagickaVietnam then."
Steam has added a screenshot-sharing feature to its service, detailed over on the official blog. In any Steam game with the Steam overlay running, you can hit a hotkey (default F12) to snap a screenshot, and then save and publish them off to your Steam Community profile, or save them on social networks like Facebook and Twitter.

Once taken, you can access "Screenshots" under the "View" menu in Steam, and the app even lets you access them directly on your hard drive via a "Show on Disk" button. It's a very groovy way to integrate something that not all games make clear. Now, how long until we can capture video like this?
Steam adds Screenshot Manager, allows taking and sharing screenshots originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 24 Feb 2011 22:00:00 EST. Oh, Kevin Butler. You seemed so perfect -- exactly the kind of PR icon that Sony needed, always saying and doing exactly the right thing for the company's image. You were always so in the know, always on top of the public pulse. Until Tuesday night, that is, when the Kevin Butler account on Twitter replied to what it thought was a random series of letters and numbers with a Battleship joke. Unfortunately, that code turned out to be the key once used to hack the PS3 through a USB dongle. In essence, the great KB helped to spread exactly the sort of information his company's been fighting to keep secret in court.

Of course, the tweet was quickly deleted. It wasn't that severe a leak anyway, since Sony's already fixed the exploit that it used and that key isn't the one being contested in the ongoing lawsuit. The real damage here is to KB's reputation. After deleting the tweet, whichever PR person runs the account quickly dived into a relatively harmless attempt to start a "#gamingis" trend. What, no snarky comeback or humorous braggadocio, KB? And here we thought he was the Vice President of Knowing What's Up.
Kevin Butler account accidentally retweets PS3 exploit originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 10 Feb 2011 03:00:00 EST. According to a tweet from director John Chu, Nintendo prohibited a 15-second clip of the Super Mario Bros. theme song from being used in an upcoming film adaptation of pop prince Justin Bieber's life, <strike>Crank 3</strike> Never Say Never. Chu seemed frustrated, but we understand why a company like Nintendo has to be so careful about how its flagship property is used. Also, our condolences to Justin Bieber, whom Nintendo apparently ranks just slightly below shampoo, cereal, slippers, piñatas, and, of course, this. Sleep well, buddy.

Hey, maybe Chu should have just used it without asking. ... What's that, Captain Lou? ... Participants are asked to come up with clever captions for a selected screenshot in 100 characters or less.

Of course, given the nature of the game, participants are also limited to 30 seconds. After you've come up with your impromptu masterpiece, it'll go on the "Twitter30" website and your own Twitter feed. As 1UP notes, it's technically a Japanese contest, but there's likely someone at Marvelous who will be able to read and appreciate your frantic attempts at humor.
Twitter caption contest launched for Half-Minute Hero sequel originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 31 Dec 2010 22:00:00 EST. Our buds, bros, chums and cohorts over at Cheap Ass Gamer are hosting a pretty clever donation drive for Child's Play 2010 (alongside its annual charity drive, of course) -- for every new follower the bargain-wise site obtains on Twitter, its generous creators will give a quarter to to buy some games for sick kids in hospitals across the country .

To take part in the drive, sign in on the promotion's official page, click the link to follow CAG on Twitter, and then (optionally) Tweet the message provided to you to share it with your followers. Not only will CAG donate a quarter for each of your followers who participates, but you'll also move up the leaderboards based on how much cash your endorsement rakes in (UK residents can also participate and will be automatically redirected). And if there's one thing we love, it is earning ranks on leaderboards. By which, of course, we mean "charity!" We love charity so, so much. Way more than we love bolstering our e-peen.

Extra charitable folks who want a chance to win a couple thousand dollars in prizes can also enter a raffle the site is holding -- for every $5 you donate via CAG's PayPal to Child's Play, you get one entry for the raffle. Did we mention thousands of dollars in prizes?
Cheap Ass Gamer holding Child's Play donation drive originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 02 Dec 2010 23:30:00 EST. The promised free "Compatibility Pack" for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of DJ Hero 2 have arrived on their respective digital stores, giving owners the ability to import DJ Hero 1's DLC into the sequel. The game's official Twitter representation announced as much today, clarifying that "some DJ Hero 2 functionality is not supported in this update," specifically listing "freestyle cross-fading, freestyle scratching, and vocals" as the main culprits.
Finally, you can once again lose yourself in the music, the moment, you own it, you better never let it go ... sorry! Got a little carried away for a moment there.
PSA: DJ Hero 2 update for DJ Hero 1 DLC compatibility now available originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 11 Nov 2010 08:00:00 EST. Sure, we appreciate the fact that Team Meat's Super Meat Boy was conveniently downloaded onto our Xbox 360, but that doesn't do much to satisfy our unending urge to lovingly squeeze the game box ever so tightly. At the moment, there's nothing we can do about this (and no, not any old game box would do) -- but this may change. Tweeting from the Super Meat Boy account, the game's devs publicly wondered, "If we decided to try to find a publisher and do a boxed version for $20 (with extras) but come out later on the Wii, would you hold out?"

It seems that the tweet was at least partially in reaction to the game's WiiWare delay, said to be due to size constraints. One thing the folks at Team Meat certainly won't be doing? Splitting the game into chapters for digital release. "No split. It isn't as easy as 'cut it into parts.' The logistics of that are insane. That would push it out farther than a retail release," the devs also tweeted.

"We will figure this WiiWare issue out soon," Team Meat assured. "Should have official updates in a few weeks." Until then, well, we'll be playing ... Super Meat Boy.
Team Meat considering retail for Super Meat Boy on Wii originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 03 Nov 2010 16:35:00 EST. If you're not familiar with Moon, it's an inventive RPG about a child sucked into the world of a (fictional) RPG, also called Moon. After playing through the game in his real life, he must then follow in the path of an insane, level-hungry "Hero" in the game's world, and help bring peace to the souls of the monsters murdered for XP. Read this NeoGAF thread and this HG101 article for more detail.

Showing your support for the sequel (and, likely, helping Nishi find a publishing partner to fund its development) couldn't be easier: simply include the #moon2 hashtag in your tweets. In the event that Moon 2 does get made, Nishi has already said he "hopes" to bring it to the west as well.
Chibi-Robo creator tweeting for a Moon sequel originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 13 Oct 2010 11:45:00 EST. Facebook and Twitter integration is far from the most exciting advancement made in gaming this generation. But, it's a feature that Wii has yet been privy too. That changes with the upcoming Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock. Speaking to Nintendojo, Vicarious Visions producer Joe Fisher proclaimed that "we are the first Wii title to support social networking sites, with Facebook and Twitter."

Elaborating further, he says that you'll be able to broadcast various in-game accomplishments. Making up for Nintendo's lack of a unified achievement system, the developer has decided to create its own, which connects with the social networking sites. "We've also incorporated a Wii award system, so when you do specific challenges in the game, you get credited for an award. You can share those with your online friends as well." Considering the arcade focus of the upcoming game, we're certain hardcore Guitar Hero fans will appreciate being able to share bragging rights on the Wii as well.
Warriors of Rock first Guitar Hero game to integrate Twitter and Facebook on Wii originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 12 Sep 2010 12:00:00 EST. The image you see above represents an entire year of gaming tweets. It was generated by the Aggregame service, which offers a real-time feed of game-related messages from Twitter, and shows the 150 most used words, collected from more than 28 million individual tweets from July 2009 to July 2010. As you can see, most gamers overwhelmingly tweet and re-tweet about the three major consoles.

As for individual games, Modern Warfare 2 and Halo most frequently appeared among 140 characters or less, though World of Warcraft, Uncharted, The Sims and Mario seem to have enjoyed their share of shoutouts. Check out a high-res version of the chart at Aggregame, or simply click past the break to see the saddest thing ever.
Continue reading A year of gaming tweets condensed into one image

A year of gaming tweets condensed into one image originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 28 Jul 2010 05:00:00 EST. Following the lead of techno-savvy game companies like Square Enix, Namco Bandai recently Tweeted a query to its fans and followers, asking which of its classic games people would want to see on the PSOne Classics storefront. You can let your voice be heard by sending your 140-character suggestion to @nbgi_webmaster.

Now, we know most of you are going to start dropping the titles of your favorite Namco titles, ala Tekken or Tales of Destiny. However, don't sleep on Bandai's PSOne offerings -- a list which includes hits like Digimon World, Digimon World 2, Digimon World 3 and Digimon Rumble Arena.
Namco Bandai surveying for future PSOne Classics releases originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 14 Jul 2010 04:00:00 EST. Sega recently announced a surprising feature for the Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown arcade installations which will soon populate Japanese arcades. According to Versus City's translation of the announcement, players will be able to link their VF.net profiles to their Twitter accounts, which will allow the Final Showdown machines to automatically Tweet their accomplishments. Players will also be able to search for their recent adversaries on VF.net, and begin following their linked Twitter account.

The game's director, Daiichi Katagiri, gave a few examples of updates which the machine will generate, including "DK's Lau has put together a 10 game win streak at Club Sega Shinjuku #VF5FS" and "DK's Lau has earned the "Dragon Wing" item from a Basic Capsule (Rare) #VF5FS." We think this feature could really turn the American arcade industry around, though we're not crazy about the idea of broadcasting messages such as "I just sprained my ankle and humiliated myself in public again #DDRSuperNova2."
Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown arcade machine is Twitter-enabled originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 26 Jun 2010 19:30:00 EST. We've been fooled before by Twisted Metal creator David Jaffe and his Twitter account, so we'll treat his recent statements expressing interest in making a Sweet Tooth-based, "low-budget slasher movie," with with the same trepidation we reserve for buying ice cream from an evil clown. That said, his phrasing is pretty straightforward: "I want us to make an honest to goodness, low-budget slasher movie and sell it on PSN exclusive. Peeps saying we are making a PSN Sweet Tooth GAME got it wrong."

He later clarified that the "Sweet Tooth PSN thing" he wants to do "is a MOVIE on PSN, like THE TESTER in terms of exclusive PSN programming ... not a game." Perhaps his brief involvement with ... The Tester gave him a taste of almost-television stardom that he just can't let go? Or maybe it's just his love for low-budget slash flicks. We're not totally sure, but you can bet we've reached out for comment from the man himself.
Jaffe's got a filmmaking Sweet Tooth for PSN originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 24 Jun 2010 19:00:00 EST. The Japanese side of the company has announced Pac-Man Reborn, a mobile game based on the idea of building and evolving the ultimate Pac creature.

Players create their own Pac-Man thing in different colors, using parts like antlers and kebabs, then pit them against their friends, with the winner spawning a new Pac-Man thing. And somehow, this crazy mobile / iPhone game will interact with Twitter.

We expect to find out more about this game -- like how to play it and what Namco is talking about -- during the E3 Pac-Man party. A beta will be released in Japan tomorrow, marking the 30th anniversary of the original game.
Bizarre Creations is known for its racing expertise, honed in the great Project Gotham Racing series, and their latest title, Blur, is no exception. The arcade sensibilities of Bizarre's own Geometry Wars and the underrated (I said it!) The Club add a few new colors to the mix, but the driving is as solid as ever -- as you'll know if you've been playing the multiplayer beta.

The real key to Blur, though, is the much-discussed social features. Bizarre has more or less perfected console racing over all of its past iterations, and so when we were invited to Activision HQ last week to check out Blur's single-player components, the focus wasn't so much on the how of racing, but the why.
Look, we get it. You found a primo slab of stone that's just aching to have your name emblazoned all over it in big, funky letters. There's just one problem: it's illegal.

So how about slapping your name or handle onto a virtual wall? That's what Crytek is offering 50 lucky winners in its latest game, Crysis 2. It's a Twitter-based contest, so you'll need to follow @Crysis and fire off the appropriate tweet below, given your region:

UK: Hey @Crysis, I want you to put my name in the game! http://crys.is #Crysis2contestUK

US/Canada: Hey @Crysis, I want you to put my name in the game! http://crys.is #Crysis2contestNA

Germany: Hey @Crysis, Ich mochte meinen Namen im Spiel sehen! http://crys.is #Crysis2contestDE

Act quickly, because the contest concludes on May 3. Oh how we can't wait to see all of the "Pothead McSmokesweeds" and "XxBlazingMad420zxXs" when we're running through a dilapidated New York city!
Get your name or handle in Crysis 2 as graffiti originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 01 May 2010 03:00:00 EST. Thanks to a since-deleted Tweet from the skateboarding mogul himself, the name Tony Hawk: Shred has been making the rounds as the rumored title for the next game in the venerable skating series. Now, Activision's made it official, telling us, "We can confirm we've given a name to the next Tony Hawk game - Tony Hawk: SHRED, and more details will be revealed in the coming months."

What we don't know is if TH:S is the peripheral-based follow-up to last year's Tony Hawk: Ride that Activision <strike>threatened</strike> promised in February. It seems like a natural evolution, right? "Hey Steve, you seem to be riding that skateboard pretty well, but aren't you ready to do more than ride? Would you, perhaps, be prepared to shred?"

(Also, as our own Ludwig Kietzmann points out, Tony Hawk: Shrek would probably make a lot more money.)
Tony Hawk: Shred confirmed by Activision originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 22 Apr 2010 12:55:00 EST.
