The dungeon RPG Unchained Blades, long available on PSP, makes its way to 3DS eShop today. Originally released as a retail game in Japan, XSEED's localized version is exclusively downloadable. The brawler/RPG Code of Princess is also downloadable today, but not exclusively: it was released as a 3DS cart back in October.

Mobile and PC platformer Gunman Clive is also on 3DS today, with its unusual sketches-on-yellowed paper look. And on Wii U: nothing! If you got one over the holidays, now's the time to catch up on Little Inferno and Mighty Switch Force, or something.

Unchained Blades loosed upon 3DS eShop Jan. 3

The dungeon RPG Unchained Blades was released on PSP back in June, but 3DS owners in North America are still waiting for it. That wait ends January 3, when XSEED will release the game, which features creature designs by a variety of Japanese artists, on the 3DS eShop.

Unchained Blades is about a group of monster characters venturing through first-person dungeons to unlock their monster-y powers, and to convince other monsters to join their cause. In Japan, there's already a sequel, which XSEED has said it would only even consider localizing after this 3DS release.

Unchained Blades sequel a 'maybe' in US after the first gets on 3DS

Unchained Blades is due for the 3DS in December, "hopefully," XSEED writes on its Facebook page. After that launch, XSEED might start localizing the sequel, Unchained Blades EXXIV, for western audiences.

"We're still struggling to get the original out on 3DS first," XSEED writes. "After that's finally out the door (hopefully December), then maybe we can start thinking about the sequel."

Unchained Blades hit PSP on June 26, for $30, and it is available now on the Vita via the PlayStation Store.

XSEED lets loose Unchained Blades on PSP next week

Your first chance to check out XSEED's localized version of the RPG Unchained Blades will be very soon - and on PSP. The PSP version of FuRyu's RPG, created by Lunar and Grandia vets, will be released on PSN June 26, for $29.99. XSEED was unable to confirm whether the game would be Vita-compatible, or available through the Vita store, at launch - a reminder that the Vita's PSP compatibility is not 100% for some reason, and not even all of the Vita-compatible PSP games are available through the Vita's PlayStation Store.

The 3DS version, announced concurrently, is due sometime later in 2012, also as a download.

Unchained Blades going to 3DS and PSP as a digital release

Over the weekend, we reported that XSEED was localizing Unchained Blades as a 3DS download. The publisher officially announced the title today, revealing that it's actually localizing both the 3DS and PSP versions of FuRyu's dungeon RPG, for digital release. It's an oddly fruitful day for first-person dungeon RPGs!

XSEED talked up the old-school Game Arts cred of the game, which is directed by Lunar writer Toshio Akashi and features a story by Grandia's Takashi Hino. That story involves a group of monster people ("cowardly golem prince," "medusa priestess," etc., all designed by different artists) questing to win back the transformative power of a "dragon emperor."

'Unchained Blades' coming to 3DS eShop via XSEED

This is going to sound pretty weird, because it involves clues to something you likely don't remember or know. The short version: Nintendo Power's table of contents reveals a game called "Unchained Blades" for 3DS, as a download.

The long version: this is the reveal of something publisher XSEED was cryptically teasing yesterday, with a series of images on Twitter including a Tyrannosaurus Rex, a blade of grass, and a still from Ghost's famous pottery wheel scene. And now you're confused.

It's now clear that the clues refer to the dungeon crawler released in Japan as UnchainBlades Rexx. (get it: "Unchained" Melody plus "blade" of grass plus T. "Rex.") It was a retail game over there, but being in Nintendo Power's "Download" section suggests that XSEED is improving the distribution method along with the name.
