Steam is cleaning the gunk out of its gears with a new content delivery system, upgrading its download rates and streamlining its publishing process. The new system boasts a larger aggregate bandwidth, meaning Steam will be able to more easily cater to large demands worldwide, and an HTTP delivery system.

Updates are getting tuned up in a big way -- instead of re-downloading an entire file to install one update, the new system will only download the changes made to the file, because that's what an update means. It will also be possible to update to a game while playing it.

Valve has written new tools for developers and publishers to simplify their behind-the-scenes processes and ship products faster, promising that publisher-side updates will also be streamlined, which is something EA in particular has been quietly vocal about changing. The new system will be applied to "more and more" content over time, beginning "soon" with the release of Dota 2 later this year. You can try it out now by downloading an HD trailer from the Steam Store.
Steam streamlines updates and downloads with new content delivery system originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 16 Jul 2011 18:00:00 EST. Beginning March 3 in Japan, Microsoft will no longer service original Xbox consoles, regardless of warranty status. Xbox (not Xbox 360s, now) owners who are still under warranty and require repair will have the opportunity to participate in an upgrade offer, trading broken Xbox units for a new, free, Xbox 360 (insert ironic Red Ring of Death joke here). More information regarding the service stoppage and upgrade offer is available on the Xbox Japan Support site.
Microsoft kills support for the original Xbox in Japan originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 09 Feb 2009 14:45:00 EST. Not content with redesigning the PlayStation Blog, Sony has revealed further plans to develop the PlayStation web sites, starting with some added functionality coming soon. Both the PlayStation Blog and PlayStation.com will be updated on Monday to allow you to log in with your PlayStation Network ID. Not only that, but a player profile on the sites will show your PSN name, avatar and mini description. Presumably, these will be automatically pulled from your PSN account.

You will also be able to check your friends list online and rate and review games in your library on PlayStation.com. The announcement post ends with an instruction to stay tuned for more gamer profile updates to follow before the end of the year. We love to see the PS3 and its various websites becoming more fully integrated. Definitely looking forward to more details about what these upcoming profile updates could entail.
PlayStation.com upgrade brings new community features originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 19 Nov 2008 20:00:00 EST.
Nintendo's Media Summit has just thrown us its first juicy bone of the night, and it's a big one. As was previously rumored, Satoru Iwata has revealed the Nintendo DSi, the direct successor to the DS Lite which comes absolutely jam-packed with new features and trinkets, including two cameras, music playback functions, expanded screens, an SD card slot, and a whole new, DS-specific download service. Hit the break for the full list of improvements and adjustments, as well as the Japanese launch date and price!

Continue reading Nintendo announces Nintendo DSi

Nintendo announces Nintendo DSi originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 02 Oct 2008 00:52:00 EST. This is fairly huge, and fairly believable! Japanese business newspaper Nikkei posted an article describing features in an upcoming new DS model set for this year, designed with the intention of competing with the iPhone and other mobile devices. According to the article, the new hardware will include a camera and music playback functionality. The camera will be integrated into gameplay, which suggests that it may be more of a new system than an upgrade. It also features the ability to connect with "information terminals" to get location-sensitive information, which we know Nintendo has looked into. There's even more in the print version of the same article. It states that the device will cost less than 20,000 yen.

A removed article on the site Monex.co.jp (screenshot available at the NeoGAF link) said that the new DS will feature the ability to share data with the Wii via the SD slot, as well as larger screens.

We wonder what that Nintendo Media Summit is going to be about.

[Via NeoGAF, Game|Life]
Japanese newspaper details new camera-equipped DS originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 27 Sep 2008 22:14:00 EST. The new look PSN Store is definitely something to behold, even if we've mostly gotten used to what it looks like by now. Unfortunately, it suffered from not caching images properly and, as a result, slow loading of items on the store. If you're someone who's particularly annoyed by this, then you'll be happy to hear that firmware 2.40 seems to have brought with it a little surprise which makes the store run a lot smoother. This is true of both the US and the EU stores.

Not only that, but a new "view mode" has been added to both, so now you can have the store items laid out in more of a list form, rather than just an image. Not only does this make it easier to see what each item is at a glance, but it also shows the price, even if the item is not highlighted. This is definitely our preferred method of viewing the store. If we find any more 2.40 surprises, we'll be sure to let you know.
2.40 includes hidden PSN Store upgrade originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 02 Jul 2008 06:00:00 EST. Still others already had a Lite, but found themselves lulled into spending even more money on a spiffy new shade. We just can't control ourselves in the face of such beauty.

But what happens when you end up with a second DS? Unless you've been retro-fitted with an extra pair of arms, you probably don't need two handhelds. Rather than letting the extra sit around and collect dust, check out our suggested uses for that second DS.

All you jerks out there who are used to lording your shiny new DS Lites over Phat-owning early-adopters might have to get used to playing second fiddle soon. In the latest issue of Japanese gaming rag Famitsu, publisher Hirokazu Hamamura speculates that a new version of Nintendo's best-selling handheld may be revealed at this summer's E3 trade show.

As detailed in a Bloomberg Japan report (sketchy machine translation), Hamamura's comments seem based on nothing more than industry chatter and pure conjecture on his part -- Nintendo predictably offered up a no comment. The timing does seem about right, though -- going back to the Game Boy days, Nintendo has released a new portable hardware revision roughly every two years since 1996's Game Boy Pocket (1998: Game Boy Color; 2001: Game Boy Advance; 2003: GBASP; 2004: Nintendo DS; 2005: Game Boy Micro; 2006: DS Lite). What would you like to see on a potential DS upgrade? Obviously, we're fans, but we're not going to say it's perfect. There can be problems at times. We're not sure we're ready for a whole new redesign (though we don't hate Shogmaster's mockup design at all), but if someone handed us a free new DS with a few issues fixed (d-pad, anyone?), we wouldn't argue. So we thought we'd ask you: what would you change? What would you fix? What do you think the Lite didn't address when it moved up from the DS?
DS Daily: Problems and solutions originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 27 Jul 2007 09:00:00 EST. Days after a Lumines exploit allowed all PSPs to be downgraded, Sony has released a minor security patch in the form of firmware 3.51. This incremental update doesn't offer any new functionality. Rather, it corrects the flaw found in Lumines. Those that are interested in upgrading to the latest firmware should use Network Update from their PSPs. Officially, the update includes:

Revisions to strengthen security have been added.

And that's it.
[Thanks, Reuban!]
Firmware 3.51 now available on Network Update originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 29 Jun 2007 01:45:00 EST.
Sony's PlayStation Portable holds a very odd little spot in gaming currently. It's not a failure in the portable market but, putting it next to the Nintendo DS, it just isn't as successful as it could have been. The PSP had a slow start, just like another recent Sony console, but if you picked up a PSP now, there's a pretty solid group of games. Not to mention that it's got some games in the pipeline, including the drool-worthy God of War: Chains of Olympus.

Our chums over at PSPFanboy have started putting together 60 reasons to own a PSP. They got the first part up now, which includes five reasons to own it ... hopefully there will be another 11 parts. The first five reasons PSPFanboy gave to own a PSP, with a quick quote from them for each reason, are:

Games: "The library features some real gems, such as Lumines, Wipeout, Grand Theft Auto, and Tekken: Dark Resurrection ... a quick look down the horizon reveals a plethora of Final Fantasy titles, a new God of War, Syphon Filter, Castlevania, Silent Hill, and more."

PSone classics: "The advent of the PSP Store later this year, we're confident that even more great games are going to come out."

Downloadable demos: "Who doesn't like playing games ... especially when they're free?"

Great homebrew games: "Upcoming titles like No Gravity show an unstoppable momentum for this underground movement."

Play Flash games on the go: "Love a Flash game on the web? The PSP can play that as well. In fact, some developers have even created Flash games specifically for PSP's widescreen."

So, we're looking forward to the next 55 reasons. Clearly many people are not convinced, but the PSP is beginning to fulfill its potential. It's just the sad state of things that Sony is getting into the habit of manufacturing potential products. We want our systems good, and we want them good immediately or, at least, as soon as possible. Oh well, still much love for the PS2 -- that thing rocks!
Reasons to own a PSP, and there's 60 of 'em originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 10 Jun 2007 17:45:00 EST. The poster has a pretty high-level of 'forum street cred,' having released information on previous firmware releases that turned out to be valid, but we're still a little skeptical. After the initial posting, she and SCEA edited her post to nothingness - but SCEA has allowed the quoted firmware update features to stay up in the replies. The source of the list was suppose to have come from a Sony Press Site which required credentials - info not there anymore. Unfortunately, no time frame given for release of the update, but it's implied that it's soon.

Major updates:

XMB[TM] (XrossMediaBar) is now accessible during gameplay. [No further information given.]

Wallpaper feature has been added.

Additional visualizations have been added. [Nice!]

A ton of little tweaks are also included, listed in the standard obtuse terminology Sony always uses for their firmware update lists. Seems like the totally secret announcement of the Xbox 360 Elite -- and it's strapping 120GB hard drive -- may have spurred Sony to consider bumping the PlayStation 3's already user-replaceable 60GB hard drive to ... an 80GB hard drive! An FCC filing dated March 2, 2007 announces the addition of a new model, CECHE01, which includes some tweaks to the Bluetooth antenna and, notably, a larger hard drive. Unlike Microsoft's latest SKU, the CECHE01 will replace the anemic 60GB CECHA01. Or maybe it won't.

According to Sony, "The 80GB we're not making a comment on, but we don't have any plans at the moment." While it's true that the interior workings of giant megacorporations confuse and bewilder us, we're still left pondering how they managed to file a "Permissive Change Letter" with the FCC with no "plans at the moment." With the 20GB PS3 model being a no-show in Europe, and increasingly so here as well, maybe Sony just wants to stick those missing gigabytes back into the marketplace. If you have a question for the team, send an e-mail to andrew @ pspfanboy.com with the subject "Ask PSP Fanboy."

Q: I subscribed to "The 1UP Show" RSS feed and had it download overnight. When I go to it under videos it says "unsupported movie type" or something like that. It is a mp4 file and if I run it through PSP Video 9 it'll play. But I'd like to to play right off the bat. Any clue? I'm also having the same problems with "On the Spot" from gamespot.com. Also what are the restrictions on mp4 files for the PSP?

A: The PSP has some peculiar restrictions with video playback. The two you should focus on are video resolution and bitrate. Videos are limited to a maximum of 76800 pixels (320x240, for example), and a video bitrate of 768kbps. You should make sure that videos that aren't named in Sony's proprietary Memory Stick format (MAQ, M4V) are placed in your Memory Stick under a folder called "VIDEO."

Unfortunately, it appears that "The 1UP Show" is now encoded at a much higher resolution than the PSP is allowed to play back. You may want to download PSP-compatible files directly from The 1UP Show website.

Continue reading Ask PSP Fanboy: Volume 5

Ask PSP Fanboy: Volume 5 originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 03 Feb 2007 18:00:00 EST. And finally, our favorite new feature: numerical base alterations. The system hacks the internet and builds a personality database based on daily porn site visitations and illegal torrenting. It then selects a numerical base which it has deemed optimal. Our programs have shown that your optimal viewing base is in fact

thirteen

and thus, the numbers below will be automatically altered from their standard base ten format. Firmware 3.10 is now available for PSP owners that can access a wi-fi point and hit "Network Update" on their systems. As previously mentioned, the update includes the following enhancements:

Support for PLAYSTATION Network titles has been expanded.

Support for the MPEG-4 AVC format has been added under [Location Free Player]

[Dynamic Normalizer] has been added as a feature under [Sound Settings] in [Settings].

Also included is a memory saving mode for the internet browser (In the internet browser, go to Tools -> Settings). Japanese PSP owners will also notice a PlayStation Spot icon above P-TV in Network.

It should be noted that this upgrade will render homebrew useless on your system, and may prevent you from downgrading indefinitely. While we fully support Sony's endeavors on the system, we want you to make an educated choice before deciding to upgrade or not. Of course, this upgrade is but a taste of things to come: Sony will most likely include an even more robust feature set in the next major upgrade.

For those of you unable to access Network Update, feel free to download the upgrade from us. Connect your PSP via USB and save in PSP/GAME/UPDATE.

[Update 1: News from QJ suggests that people with custom firmware should not upgrade, as your systems may become bricked.]
Firmware 3.10 now available on Network Update [Update 1] originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 30 Jan 2007 08:00:00 EST. The latest update, 3.10, includes a variety of new functions, such as dynamic normalization in music (yes!), and a new "memory economy" function for the web browser that should lessen the frequency of those annoying memory errors.

However, this update seems to only be available on the heavy-hit, sluggish Korean PS site. Undoubtedly, this update should hit the other global sites shortly. Will you make the upgrade, or is the temptation of 3.03OE-C too great for you?

[Via DCEmu]

Firmware 3.10 released ... in Korea originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 29 Jan 2007 18:07:00 EST. Quite possibly inspired by my own list of grievances, IGN wrote up a letter to Sony detailing what they'd like to see in future firmware releases. Their requests included the integration of the PlayStation Network and Store into the PSP, media support, and enhanced Remote Play functionality. Wait, that sounds almost exactly like what I wanted! Truth is, many PSP fans want the same things out of our system. IGN's readers sent in a few of their ideas:

"I would love to see homebrew accepted through the psp firmware."

"PDF. E-Books are a happy thing, escpecially [sic] if you want to use your PSP at school or work without getting beaten."

"Folders within Folders would be an awesome feature, I love categorizing my music in certain ways, such as Metal, Rock, Video Games, and beyond that folders for individual bands, and if nessesary, another level for albums."

"I want to be able to send Mp3s/WMAs via Ad-Hoc, as you can do with pictures."

"I would love to see a virtual console on the psp....Genesis, pc engine, Neo Geo, etc."

"I would also like some true streaming video support."

"Get rid of the current text input (cell phone number pad) and make a new one with a qwerty style input ( like used in Socom FTB or Syphon Filter)."

This, good reader, sounds like a lot like your feedback. Doesn't Sony get the point now... PSP fans want the same things! Unite, and maybe Sony will finally listen to their fan base!
IGN readers wish for firmware upgrades originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 24 Dec 2006 13:30:00 EST. For all of Sony's technological one-upmanship, Microsoft had deftly removed one of the PlayStation 3's brightest tail-feathers in a single software download. Well, at least it seemed that way until a little over a month later when the update was available and Microsoft's implementation left a lot to be desired. Of course, they promised a patch to correct some issues in the update, notably the incompatibility of 1080p-over-component on televisions that supported the format. That second patch has finally arrived and, as promised, solves some of those issues. For example, the above image shows a Sony XBR3 television finally displaying 1080p content over component. So, for those users who only needed that fixed, you're on your way.

Still, despite the update's promise of "improved support for HD video output over VGA, including 1080p resolution" this blogger still encounters a significant (and certainly abnormal) amount of screen tearing while using the VGA connection, not to mention the pale, washed-out colors that have become emblematic of the 360's VGA implementation. But we're not the only ones with problems. A quick perusal of the AVS Forums thread shows some another anomalies that don't instill much confidence in Microsoft's upgraded upgrade.

We have a feeling that Microsoft will continue to tweak this feature until it works as expected; however, after two attempts we're left underwhelmed and Microsoft's magic hat trick is looking more and more like smoke and mirrors.

Read -- Major Nelson's Dashboard update announcement
Read -- AVS Forums on "improved" 1080p support
Microsoft's updated 1080p update still needs work originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 30 Nov 2006 13:58:00 EST. The Megaton firmware. THREE POINT ZERO ZERO. All you have to do is access Network Update and download the file. (As of this writing, the upgrade is not available on the US or Japanese PSP websites.)

This update includes the following changes:

PLAYSTATION Network titles are now supported under [Game].

[Remote Play] has been added as a feature under [Network].

[Online Instruction Manuals] has been added as a feature under [Network].

Timed recording has been added as a feature under [RSS Channel].

A visual player has been added as a feature under [Music].

3-speed fast forward and fast reverse has been added as a feature under [Music].

[Camera] has been added as a feature under [Photo].

[UMD Auto-Start] has been added as a feature in [System Settings] under [Settings].

For those of you that don't have wi-fi access, I have provided a downloadable update for you. Connect your PSP via USB, and then go to the PSP/GAME folder. Create the folder "UPDATE" and place the EBOOT file there. From your PSP, access your Memory Stick's games, and choose the update.
Continue reading Firmware 3.00 now available via Network Update

Firmware 3.00 now available via Network Update originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 20 Nov 2006 23:05:00 EST. I do get quite a number of silly e-mails from readers asking how to upgrade the system's firmware. Is it so difficult to visit Sony's official website? Is it so difficult to put a UMD that features an upgrade into one's system to update? Is it so hard to use the "Network Update" feature? WHY?? Why can't people figure this out?!

As long as there's simpletons using the machine, there will always be a market for capitalizing store managers. Is he a smart business man? Or is he just exploiting others for a free feature?
Local game store updates firmware for only $4.99! originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 20 Nov 2006 21:30:00 EST. Sony's attempting to market the device at a whopping $350, which is ridiculous when many, if not all of its features can be implemented in the PSP, or a PSP redesign. With the right accessories and firmware upgrades, the PSP can do every thing the mylo can... plus it can play games. And at $199, it would be a bargain for the consumer. Here's a list of what Carony believes will make the PSP better:

Skype support to make Internet (VoIP) calls (using the SOCOM headset).

Support for Slingbox (a competitor of Location-Free TV). Sony could make some bling by not selling hardware, but selling a Slingbox application.

Built-in IM applications, similar to mylo's support for Yahoo! and Google.

Better e-mail integration.

Keyboard accessory.

Video output for TV.

Stop making Connect so crappy. Where's the revamp?

These are all great, plausible and reasonable upgrades that Sony can provide. If Sony actually took these suggestions to heart, I know a ton more college students and business people would pick up a PSP. Let's hope Sony has the brains to follow through on some of this.

[Via PSP World]
How the PSP can overcome the PSP-inspired mylo originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 18 Aug 2006 16:00:00 EST. If you'd like information on what other peripherals are coming out "Holiday 2006" (so sometime in the 4th quarter) and at what price, read on for more.
Continue reading $40 XBL Vision camera & UNO bundle detailed by MS source along with prices & dates for other 360 accessories

$40 XBL Vision camera & UNO bundle detailed by MS source along with prices & dates for other 360 accessories originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 02 Jun 2006 00:26:00 EST.
