Croteam, the folks behind the upcoming Serious Sam 3: BFE, must be seriously crazy about nostalgia, because they've decided to include a feature PC gaming hasn't seen in quite a while: Split-screen multiplayer. The developer has announced that the game will indeed allow for up to four players to play on the same screen, with the help of a keyboard and mouse and up to three gamepads.

All of the versus and co-op modes will allow for splitscreen play, so just like old times, you'll be able to see what your friends are up to, helping or hampering them as you will. Check the screens below to see what this chaos looks like.
1n0ut, an artist collective specializing in multimedia performance-based art, has created a Kinect hack both beautiful and inspiring to behold. Titled "Versus," it sees a real-life dancer giving lessons to a digital model. Just imagine: Here's a future where we can teach our computers how to Dougie.
Continue reading Kinect Hacks: A dancer in the machine

Kinect Hacks: A dancer in the machine originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 25 Mar 2011 11:50:00 EST. At Vizio's CES suite, the HDTV manufacturer was showing off its "Versus"-enabled television. The tagline is "head-to-head gaming" and the feature is that simple. The set uses a 3D panel to drive two images, so two players can play the same game head-to-head. Like 3D gaming, the software needs to support the functionality; thankfully, if the game already supports stereoscopic 3D, it only needs a "small interlace tweak" to support head-to-head gaming.

It works like this: Instead of rendering two unique 540p images to create a single "1080p" 3D image, it renders two distinct gameplay streams and uses specially keyed glasses (ours were marked "L" and "R") to isolate each player's display. The game on display was Ubisoft's Shaun White Skateboarding, which already supports stereoscopic 3D. A Vizio representative said they've been working with Ubisoft and Electronic Arts on supporting the feature and are licensing the technology to publishers at no cost in an attempt to drive adoption of their standard. Vizio's also hoping that other TV manufacturers using the same passive 3D technology will license the tech at, presumably, a less altruistic rate. Also not discussed: Sony's recently published patents, which certainly seems to cover this ground.
Continue reading Vizio 'Versus' offers two-player head-to-head gaming on one screen (video inside!)

Vizio 'Versus' offers two-player head-to-head gaming on one screen (video inside!) originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 06 Jan 2011 11:30:00 EST. According to a recently revealed list of XBLA Achievements found over at Xbox360Achievements, it seems that the upcoming XBLA iteration of PopCap's zombie gardening game Plants vs. Zombies will be getting a new versus mode, as well as the inclusion (in some form) of co-op play. Two separate Cheevos indicate as much -- the first named "Versus vs. Versus" (fittingly enough) and the second named "ZFF's 4 Evr" (earned by bowling "a winner with a friend in Co-Op Wall-Nut Bowling").

The real question is, of course, whether or not everyone's favorite crazy gardener be a playable character -- we can only dream, folks.

Update: A recent press release from PopCap confirms it: Plants vs. Zombies will have a Co-op mode, as well as a Vs. mode. Ed Allard, PopCap's head of worldwide studios, says, "The two new multiplayer modes allow gamers to work cooperatively to defeat hordes of invading zombies, or go head-to-head in a true 'plants vs. zombies' challenge." Question: What's the only thing scarier than a looming horde of normal-speed zombies? Answer: A looming horde of normal-speed zombies with robot brains. That's the kind of nightmare we'll soon be facing once Valve puts the finishing touches on an update for Left 4 Dead 2, which will add Infected bots to the game's Versus mode to help balance out one-on-one games.

In addition, Valve's doing some tweaking to the zombie auto-spawning which occurs during the finale events in Versus mode. Apparently, the developer decided that the average 34.56% chance of survival for the human team was a little too low, and is trying to balance things out by disabling auto-spawning during the campaigns' climaxes. Of course, none of that will matter when the human team is attempting to escape from robot zombies.
With the release of Left 4 Dead 2 just on the horizon, Valve is making good on its promise to keep up support for the first game ... on Steam, anyway. Valve has flipped the switch on a new update, which adds Team Versus 4 on 4 competitive matchmaking to the mix -- something Valve has been promising was in the works since April of this year.

The update also fixes a pair of bugs in the game, dealing with a nasty game-crashing glitch that would occur as a result of a certain 'Crash Course' achievement (there's a joke in there) being unlocked and an issue where bots and computer-controlled special infected were being reported in the 'View Game Info' screen.

[Via Big Download]
Valve adds 4 vs 4 competitive matchmaking to Left 4 Dead on Steam originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 10 Nov 2009 16:00:00 EST. Apparently, during Versus mode in the game's "Crash Course" DLC, players were able to release teammates from "rescue closets," assuredly stopping rampant R. Kelly syndrome. The game may be fixed, but will that cure your urge to micturate on people? Update: Houston, we have prices!

As you already know, this week's Xbox Live Deal of the Week is none other than Prince of Persia's 'Epilogue' DLC. We're not here to talk about that, though -- instead, we're here to give you the heads up on what the rest of this month has in store for penny-pinching purchasers looking for goodies on Xbox Live. So let's get to it:

October 12

Hasbro Family Game Night (Battleship, Connect 4, Scrabble, Yahtzee, Boggle and Sorry! Sliders discounted to 400)

October 19

Resident Evil 5's Versus mode (discounted to 240)

October 26

Fable II Pub Games (discounted to 400)

Pub Games is the only title with its planned discount listed, so you'll have to wait until the appropriate time to know how much the others are discounted for. We're sorry we boggled your mind with savings, only to battle your ship -- ah, forget it, that joke could never work.
Microsoft details October's Xbox Live Deal of the Week specials [update] originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 09 Oct 2009 10:15:00 EST. Resident Evil 5 controversy -- much like a zombie -- refuses to die but Capcom says claims of charging gamers for on-disc content are false. Already taking shots for charging for content gamers expected in the retail release, Capcom was recently accused by IGN of charging for its Versus DLC, claiming the content was already on the disc. The controversy stems from the DLC's file size, which sits at a slim 1.8MB on Xbox 360 and 351KB for PS3.

According to Capcom's VP of strategic planning and development, Christian Svensson, the file size is because all assets for the DLC are being pulled from the retail disc; however, the download itself is programming code that "does not exist on the disc."

"Keys are 100K or less. It is not a key," Svensson replied to a forum thread regarding IGN's claim. We're not programmers but it sounds feasible for file size to remain slim for content that pulls all assets from the disc, but you're the consumer. Do you believe Capcom?

[Via Siliconera]
Capcom insists RE5 Versus wasn't on the disc originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 10 Apr 2009 17:04:00 EST. Christian Svensson, VP of strategic planning and business development, explains on the company forums that people are getting plenty of bang for their $60 and says that if people don't see the value in the secondary offering that, "the choice is simple, don't purchase it."

Svensson goes on to explain that paid DLC at Capcom has its own budget, with its own profit and loss analysis. He emphasizes that without this method, the Versus content wouldn't exist in the first place, because it "did not fit within the production budget of the base product." He continues that to hit the sweet spot of DLC releasing within 3 to 6 weeks of initial launch that development on these products starts before the actual product hits shelves.

Although the whole situation definitely has some debatable points, Svensson certainly hit the nail on the head when he said if consumers don't agree with what Capcom did: Don't buy the product.

[Via Kotaku]
Capcom VP explains RE5 multiplayer development, calls complaints 'BS' originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 16 Mar 2009 18:11:00 EST. If you're a member of the enraged masses protesting the pricing of Resident Evil 5's 'Versus' DLC pack, which adds new online co-op and competitive options to the game, we doubt this news will do anything to soothe your frayed nerves -- Capcom recently revealed the DLC's price for Japan: 160 on Xbox Live, or ¥250 on PSN. That's less than half of the North American cost for the same content.

However, if you're still planning on picking up the additional modes, you might be interested to hear the Japanese DLC received a release date that's far less vague than our "in a few weeks" release timetable -- Japan will be able to participate in immobilized online combat as of March 26. Why the disparities in pricing and dating in the two regions? We're not sure -- though we suspect some sort of zombie trade tariff is involved.
Resident Evil 5 'Versus' DLC dated and priced in Japan originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 14 Mar 2009 13:30:00 EST. Unsurprisingly, Capcom's recently announced "Versus" DLC for Resident Evil 5 is raising quite a stink from players who are convinced they're being nickeled-and-dimed, paying for content that should have been included in the game in the first place. Capcom recently braved the slings and arrows of their incensed fanbase to defend the five-dollar update -- they claim that the price covers development of the new features which go "above and beyond the initial scope" of the game, as well as bandwidth costs associated with implementing additional online multiplayer offerings.

Capcom explained the "Versus" pack, which will bring four-player co-op and competitive online modes to the game within "a few weeks," isn't just an unlock patch for content already included on the RE5 disc -- despite the fact that it's composed entirely of assets from the core game. How about it, gang? Have you come down from your blinding, Majini-esque rage?
Capcom defends charging for Resident Evil 5 'Versus' DLC originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 13 Mar 2009 13:29:00 EST. Our affection for SuperStardust HD just got a shot in the arm with news that Finnish dev Housemarque is putting the finishing touches on a multiplayer-focused update to the twin-stick PSN shooter. Following the already available "solo" add-on, this new "team pack" update will introduce several additions, from split-screen versus and co-op modes, to a skill balancer, ship editor, trophies, and a "true" 5.1 orchestral soundtrack.

MTV's Stephen Totilo recently grilled Housemarque co-founder Ilari Kuittinen on the update, who commented that "a majority" of the development time spent on the update was focused on the new versus mode, which will feature "our 'sub' game modes and plenty of options so each gamer can tune the mode to suite their tastes." Even more interesting, Kuittinen adds that the team has been "experimenting with a game mode we call "Twin gun" mode (not disclosing specifics at the moment, maybe you can guess?) and how to make music generated levels, etc." It sounds like someone has spending a lot of time with Audiosurf, an addiction to which we can certainly relate.
Two great titles hit stores this week, one for hardcore gamers, taking you through the twisted and stylized world of Travis Touchdown, the other for those with more casual tastes, allowing you to explore the Manaurai Sea and its marine life. So, considering your limited budget, which of these two are you considering picking up, No More Heroes or Endless Ocean?

Or are you planning to skip them both, buying Advance Wars: Days of Ruin instead? But then what if No More Heroes bombs, and US publishers refuse to bring Goichi Suda's games stateside in the future? Won't someone please think of Suda 51?!

Wii Warm Up: No More Heroes vs Endless Ocean originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 22 Jan 2008 09:00:00 EST. Today, the question we must ask is clear: which would you prefer? It comes down to a question of style: are you all up into bling? Blocks? Or Boilerplate? Okay, perhaps the last was a bit of an alliterative stretch, but surely you'll forgive us in the name of the letter 'B.' Our overlords at Square Enix have been making everything old new again, and since we soak up RPGs like starlets soak up fake tanners, we can't say we're exactly displeased. In fact, the only possible dilemma we face when considering the barrage of remakes is: which ones are we most excited about? We thought we'd put the question to you guys as well. So which is it: Dragon Quest IV or Final Fantasy IV? We figured it was only fair to pit two number fours against one another.
DS Daily: Two fours enter, one four leaves originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 20 Aug 2007 09:00:00 EST. No traditional Final Fantasy XIII for you today. On this day, we've got two high-res screens that have popped up thanks to Square Enix Party 2007. One is from Versus, the other is from Agito, which we've chosen to feature to the right. The full-size is also available here if you'd like to see it better.

Now, if the latter is supposed to be on phones, how the heck does it look this good? Unless "mobile" means... handheld. In which case, we're very excited to get our hands on it. There's not much else to say except we wish we were at this party! Oh, we'd also wish we knew anything about these games. However, only two spin-offs had been announced: Final Fantasy XIII Versus, also for the PS3, and Final Fantasy XIII Agito, available for mobile phones. These were apparently the only planned titles until the above (beside?) picture surfaced, clearly showing at least three more unknown entries in the series.

Square-Enix knows how unbelievably profitable the DS is, and recently released review scores of FFXII: Revenant Wings will ensure solid sales in Japan. Personally, we find it hard to believe that one of these titles won't be coming to the DS, and heck, who knows ... there might even be a Wii title in there too.
Rumor: FFXIII chapter coming to the DS? originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 17 Apr 2007 20:15:00 EST. You know, stuff we already knew. However, a few tidbits worth mentioning were gleaned from the article coming out of PSM, but not much from the EGM page. Lots of magazines featured.

Random battles are gone for good! XIII will build off of the elements introduced in XI and XII -- where player and foe enter combat naturally. But Toshiro Tsuchida (battle director) wants more than just the same ol' thing: he wants to create natural "ecosystems" where the creatures will react based on their environments, feelings towards the player and other creatures, et cetera.

Versus is going to have an even stranger system -- every weapon has its own camera system and control algorithms... algorithms? Let's just say camera and control system. Even a third-person shooter weapon. Meh.

The article claims that the graphics in these latest Final Fantasy games will pose a challenge to the incredibly well-received movie, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (sarcasm is fun). Doubt they mean the in-game graphics, but the cut-scenes? Yeah. We'll believe it. But really, a movie that took hundreds of computers and a game taking... the PlayStation 3? Time and technology... amazing stuff.

That's it for now. We'd love to get a demo of this game soon. No promises, but that'd be nice. Right, Square-Enix? It would be nice. Heck, demos for any of the high-profile titles would make us giddy with excitement.
How exciting! It's becoming a little tiresome putting out these videos, but it seems like a topic that many people are interested in, especially CNET. As cool as those Windows Movie Maker films were, they won't have the authority of a presentation made by one of the web's leading sources of tech news. Check out their video to see a thorough, fair review of the two systems, and see PSP emerge victoriously.
Sometimes, you discover (or re-discover) a piece of internet gold. I searched and search the archives of PSP Fanboy, but I simply couldn't find this video anywhere! This video is a slick depiction of the DS and PSP battle, using two girls dressed up as the systems. Wow! These handhelds are pretty good at attracting women, huh? Although entertaining, the battle makes me recall Sony's awful black versus white advertising. And, I wouldn't necessarily agree with the bias of this fight: the winner in this video is played by the video's executive producer. Hmm.

Incredibly old DS Vs. The story begins as such: "Sony, previously considered a friend to the gaming community, has betrayed us... After some time Sony released the first plague: Firmware version 2.00... And now you must begin the quest to defeat the ultimate firmware."

Uh... excuse me? Am I the only one that doesn't feel betrayed by Sony's firmware revisions? I, for one, do use the internet browser, RSS feeds, AVC, Flash and WMA support. Regardless, it seems like a notable effort by a fan, and might merit some playing for you non-updated PSP owners.
