Freewheel measured "professional content" only, meaning video that runs with ads -- meaning it really conducted a study on how many online ads we watch -- from companies such as NBC, CBS, ESPN and Vevo. The study didn't account for Netflix or YouTube viewership.<br /><br />Xbox 360 took 28.2 percent of all viewership, followed by iPad with 27.1 percent, then iPhone, Android and iPod Touch on a decreasing scale.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/27/xbox-360-used-more-for-video-and-music-apps-than-for-gaming/">In March</a>, Microsoft announced that Xbox 360 owners use the console more for its entertainment apps than for any actual gaming purposes, spending more than half of their Xbox time on Netflix and other music and video applications. Even though the Freewheel study doesn't include Netflix views, it does support the console evolutionary theory: One day our gaming consoles will have mutated so drastically that we'll have an entirely new species, called simply "entertainment consoles."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/13/study-xbox-360-most-popular-non-pc-device-for-watching-video-ad/">Study: Xbox 360 most popular non-PC device for watching video ads</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 13 May 2012 18:00:00 EST. According to <a href="http://www.theverge.com/2012/4/23/2970035/xbox-360-found-to-infringe-motorola-patents-in-preliminary-itc-ruling">The Verge</a>, some of the patents deal with the H.264 video codec, which is the subject of other <a href="http://www.theverge.com/2012/2/22/2816371/microsoft-motorola-europe-competition-complaint-frand">legal proceedings</a> between Microsoft and Motorola - with Motorola demanding 2.25% of the final price for any Microsoft product using the standard.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-04-23/motorola-mobility-wins-ruling-in-microsoft-xbox-patent-case.html">Bloomberg</a> reports that the other two are about Wi-Fi tech, and that a fifth contentious patent was about communication between the Xbox and accessories. One of the Wi-Fi patents was not infringed, and one unspecified claim regarding one of the video patents was "invalid," judge David Shaw ruled.<br /><br />In other proceedings related to this issue, Microsoft is seeking to force Motorola to license its "standard" patents on more "fair and reasonable terms." This preliminary ruling would seem to be a blow towards Microsoft's effort; however, it is still subject to review by a panel of six judges.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/24/preliminary-ruling-xbox-360-infringes-on-some-motorola-patents/">Preliminary ruling: Xbox 360 infringes on some Motorola patents</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 24 Apr 2012 13:20:00 EST. There's no word yet on a PS3 DLC launch. Producer Nate Edson and associate producer Lucas Myers explain the new PC content in the above video, wherein they prove they are the best actors in existence, ever.<br /><br />No, really -- keeping with the "impostors" theme, Edson and Myers obviously want to throw us off and are therefore pretending to be terrible actors in a scene that is painful to watch, and they act horribly <em>so well </em>that they're obviously the best in the business.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/12/gotham-city-impostors-free-dlc-out-on-pc/">Gotham City Impostors' free DLC out on PC</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 12 Mar 2012 20:00:00 EST. The one with all the ridiculous existential questions, who had clearly lost his mind many moons before Desmond's arrival? Apparently that dude is the focus of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/17/assassins-creed-revelations-dlc-named-priced-dated-by-gamest/">the next DLC pack for <em>AC: R</em></a>, The Lost Archive, as a retailer-leaked video reveals.<br /><br />The game's listing on <a href="http://www.zavvi.com/games/platforms/xbox-360/assassin-s-creed-revelations-ottoman-edition/10594189.html">Zavvi</a> reportedly had the above video before it was pulled, though the retail site still lists some details about the third DLC pack's contents. Beyond the campaign stuff you'll be running through as Subject 16, the Lost Archive DLC comes with three character skins, Ezio's Turkish-flavored assassins armor, a fancy robe from Altair, and Brutus' armor.<br /><br />It looks like the Lost Archive may aim to link <em>Revelations</em> to the barely detailed <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/15/assassins-creed-3-arrives-on-october-30/">next Assassin's Creed franchise entry</a>, but we can't be sure just yet. We've asked Ubisoft for more details and will update this post if we hear more. The Lost Archive DLC launches on February 28 for $15 on Xbox Live Marketplace and PlayStation Network.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/23/ac-revelations-lost-archive-dlc-dives-into-the-life-of-subje/">AC: Revelations' 'Lost Archive' DLC dives into the life of Subject 16</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 23 Feb 2012 12:00:00 EST. They're actually the more commonly named Assault, Specialist, and Recon, and the video above will walk you through the different weapons, abilities, and upgrades that each class has available. Videos on the new dash have appeared washed out and dull for some users, with black reading as gray, and Microsoft had previously ignored the complaint, even when it was brought up in beta testing, <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-new-dash-borks-video-playback">Eurogamer</a> reports.<br /><br />Xbox's Major Nelson tweeted yesterday that he's heard the public outcry -- or maybe he saw Eurogamer's in-depth demonstration of the new dash's short-range RGB levels -- and he says the team is working on a solution. <br />
The latest trailer from Ubisoft's upcoming survival title, <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/i-am-alive"><em>I Am Alive</em></a>, focuses on the interesting combat system. With the game's emphasis on realism, fights are often tense and brutal, with the threat of a gun often the only thing between a peaceful situation and a gruesome machete attack.<br />
<br />
As you can see, <em>I Am Alive</em>'s fights are more often about using your sparse resources wisely under pressure than simply lining up the right shot, or having a bigger weapon than your opponents. We think it's a good hook, and you'll be able to play it for yourself when the game comes out during Microsoft's XBLA House Party, starting February 15.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/19/i-am-alive-trailer-explains-how-to-handle-yourself-in-a-fight/">I Am Alive trailer brings a gun to a machete fight</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 19 Jan 2012 04:00:00 EST. <span style="color:black">With <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/hulu-plus">Hulu Plus</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/netflix">Netflix</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/zune">Zune</a> on the Xbox 360, now more than ever the console is becoming a bastion for those looking to digest video content. During a preview of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/06/new-kinect-hub-adds-new-voice-features-coming-fall-2012/">the upcoming Fall Dashboard update</a> for Xbox Live, I spoke with senior product manager of Xbox Live entertainment, Terry Farrell, and asked him for some hard data.<br />
<br />
"42 percent of Xbox Live Gold members in the U.S. are watching an average of an hour of television and movies</span><span style="color:black"> on their Xbox, every single day," Farrell said. Each month, that adds up to "more than 30 hours of digitally distributed television and movies." Farrell also revealed that over the last year, Xbox Live has seen three times the use of video content on the Xbox 360 console, </span>spread across Netflix, Hulu Plus and Microsoft's Zune rental service.<br />
<br />
With the new Fall Dashboard update, Microsoft is looking to make it easier to present this video content, both through use of Bing search (which works via the controller and Kinect) and what the company hopes is a more intuitive and navigable user interface. Also, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/06/youtube-xbox-live/">YouTube</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/09/ms-42-of-us-xbl-gold-members-watch-average-of-1hr-of-video-con/">MS: 42% of US XBL Gold members watch average of 1hr of video content a day</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 09 Sep 2011 12:00:00 EST. Sony and Future Publishing's PlayStation Network-exclusive show, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/15/firstplay-its-like-qore-but-weekly-and-for-europe/">FirstPlay</a>, may have ended on July 6, but it doesn't mark the end of original HD offerings on PS3 from the partnership. <a href="http://www.computerandvideogames.com/311303/news/sony-launching-new-psn-video-show-wont-cost-you-a-bean/?cid=OTC-RSS&amp;attr=CVG-General-RSS">CVG</a> reports that Sony and Future are already working on a new PS3 show.<br />
<br />
No details about the actual content (or the name) have been announced, but Future's Entertainment Group Publisher Simon Maxwell said that production is "well under way," and that the show is "HD video magazine content," much like FirstPlay and North America's <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/qore">Qore</a>.<br />
<br />
While those of you in the UK (or with accounts on that region's PSN) wait for news on the new show, let this scintillating marketing speak from SCE UK Marketing Director Alan Duncan build your anticipation: "This is a great content initiative which forms a key part of SCEUK's strategy to reward and engage with our consumers in a more meaningful way."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/13/sony-and-future-creating-new-uk-ps3-video-show-to-replace-firstp/">Sony and Future creating new UK PS3 video show to replace FirstPlay</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 13 Jul 2011 02:30:00 EST. Square Enix has released <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RN7_8Yholm4&amp;feature=player_embedded#at=106">this teaser trailer</a> for the new <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/tomb-raider"><em>Tomb Raider</em></a> reboot on YouTube (after showing it on Spike earlier tonight), and boy is it purty. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/07/tomb-raider-details-emerge-features-open-world-and-brutal-death/">As promised by the game's reveal</a> back in December of last year, the fully CGI trailer features a younger, (dare we say) more naive Lara Croft, given some slightly more savage and primitive tools by the end than we've ever seen before.<br />
<br />
Sure, there's a Sully-esque old guy in there, but man, that setpiece at the end of the trailer more than makes up for any similarity to any other grave-exploring titles you may also be fond of. Stay tuned -- we'll have lots more information about this game for you as we head on into E3 next week.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/03/lara-croft-gets-primitive-in-new-tomb-raider-trailer/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Lara Croft gets primitive in new Tomb Raider trailer</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/03/lara-croft-gets-primitive-in-new-tomb-raider-trailer/">Lara Croft gets primitive in new Tomb Raider trailer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 03 Jun 2011 02:30:00 EST. We <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/26/rumor-hulu-plus-available-on-xbox-april-29/">knew it was coming</a>, but Microsoft has finally gotten around to confirming the news: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/hulu-plus">Hulu Plus</a> will officially launch on the Xbox 360 tomorrow, April 29. Not only will it feature Kinect support, but it will also be free to all Xbox 360 users (Gold and Silver) for the first week thanks to a partnership with Jack Link's Beef Jerky. And to think, your mom said consuming so much beef jerky would never benefit you in the end. <em>Shows what she knows</em>.<br />
<br />
After that free week, feel free to indulge in <em>another</em> free week by going on over to <a href="http://www.hulu.com/plus">the Hulu Plus page</a> -- just don't tell anybody we tipped you off! We're afraid you'll have to pony up some cash after that if you want to continue to use the service: $7.99 a month.<br />

After a mysterious quiet period (which is totally uncharacteristic for a <em>Duke Nukem</em> game), Deep Silver and Apogee are planning to release <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/24/duke-nukem-critical-mass-for-ds-is-apparently-still-happening/"><em>Duke Nukem: Critical Mass</em></a> for DS this week in Europe and next month in North America. You can see it in action in the trailer after the break, and, well ... it looks like a thoroughly humiliating experience, narrated by Jon St. John.<br />
<br />
Surprisingly, the press release accompanying the trailer says that the PSP version is coming out at the same time -- but Deep Silver informs us that it was actually canceled. So if you're in Europe and in line for <em>Critical Mass</em> on PSP ... go home.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/07/duke-nukem-critical-mass-trailer-skips-the-psp-version-for-good/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Duke Nukem: Critical Mass trailer skips the PSP version for good reason</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/07/duke-nukem-critical-mass-trailer-skips-the-psp-version-for-good/">Duke Nukem: Critical Mass trailer skips the PSP version for good reason</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 07 Apr 2011 22:30:00 EST. Speaking at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/02/nintendo-gdc-keynote/">Nintendo's GDC 2011 keynote</a>, company president Reggie Fils-Aime announced that the 3DS will eventually feature the ability to record live video in 3D, a feature <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/13/nintendo-considering-future-3d-video-recording-update-for-3ds/">previously hinted</a> at by Iwata.<br />
<br />
The feature will be added in an future update. Fils-Aime didn't reveal any details or release date, though he noted that Nintendo is "enthused" about the feature.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/02/3d-video-recording-coming-to-3ds/">3D video recording coming to 3DS</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 02 Mar 2011 12:52:00 EST. Why should the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/3ds">3DS</a>' futuristic screen be relegated to games only? Nintendo has announced two media services for the upcoming handheld. First, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/netflix">Netflix</a> is coming to the 3DS, allowing you to watch a movie on the go ... and then finish watching at home using your Wii.<br />
<br />
In addition, Nintendo will offer a "short-form video service," which will offer "curated" (i.e., in 3D) content, such as comedy shorts, music videos and movie trailers. These features won't be available at launch, but will be available via a <a href="http://twitter.com/NintendoAmerica/status/43002013600059393">system update</a> in "late May."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/02/netflix-and-short-form-video-service-coming-to-nintendo-3ds/">Netflix and 'short-form video service' coming to Nintendo 3DS</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 02 Mar 2011 12:43:00 EST. This trailer from Atomic Games' <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/breach"><em>Breach</em></a> is like the <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/ces">Consumer Electronics Show</a> of killing guys -- all the hottest gadgets are on display, from IR sights that let you take out snipers to motion sensor activators. The downloadable game is out January 26, but you can see the gear in action right now.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/20/breach-trailer-shows-off-all-its-wonderful-toys/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Breach trailer shows off all its wonderful toys</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/20/breach-trailer-shows-off-all-its-wonderful-toys/">Breach trailer shows off all its wonderful toys</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 20 Jan 2011 08:00:00 EST. Iwata tempered that exclamation by saying, "I think it will be fun if we're able to include video recording capabilities with future updates." Clearly, that's no guarantee that such a feature will be added to the handheld's 3D camera functionality, but if Iwata thinks it would be fun, then don't be surprised if you find yourself shooting low-res 3D video with your 3DS at some point in the future!<br />
<br />
Later in the interview, Hideki Konno joined the group and discussed the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/29/3ds-spotpass-streetpass/">StreetPass</a> feature in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/nintendogs-plus-cats"><em>Nintendogs + Cats</em></a>. "When you're using StreetPass and exchange data with someone, in walk mode, that person's Mii is walking whatever puppy he or she has chosen," Konno explained. "Then your Miis and puppies talk and exchange gifts." The feature is designed to imitate the random meetings of people walking their dogs on the street ... without having to actually meet random people walking their dogs on the street.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/13/nintendo-considering-future-3d-video-recording-update-for-3ds/">Nintendo considering future 3D video recording 'update' for 3DS</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 13 Jan 2011 12:30:00 EST. A group of five speedrunners <a href="http://tasvideos.org/2873S.html">has beaten <em>Super Mario 64</em></a> with no stars in just five minutes. To do so, they used a whole bag of tricks, including glitches, weird jumping macros, and shortcuts. It's not pretty, but if you have 18274 frames of time to spare, you can see the whole video below.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/02/tool-assisted-speedrun-shows-super-mario-64-beaten-in-five-minut/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Tool-assisted speedrun shows Super Mario 64 beaten in five minutes</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/02/tool-assisted-speedrun-shows-super-mario-64-beaten-in-five-minut/">Tool-assisted speedrun shows Super Mario 64 beaten in five minutes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 02 Jan 2011 21:00:00 EST. EA has <a href="http://www.vg247.com/2010/12/09/dead-space-aftermath-animated-series-being-released-on-blu-ray-and-dvd-in-january/">announced a release date</a> for the upcoming <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/23/dead-space-lives-in-two-new-formats-animated-movie-and-graphic/"><em>Dead Space Aftermath</em> animated movie</a>. The film will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on January 24 in Europe, and January 25 in the US. MSRP is $34.99, but some outlets (<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0047S4UPW?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=prey0f&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B0047S4UPW">including Amazon at the moment</a>) are selling it for even cheaper than that already. The film will also come bundled in a double pack with 2008's animated tie-in, <em>Dead Space Downfall</em>.<br />
<br />
The film will supposedly serve as a prequel to <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/dead-space-2"><em>Dead Space 2</em></a>, about a group sent by the Government to <a href="http://deadspace.wikia.com/wiki/Aegis_VII">the Aegis VII disaster</a> from the first animated film, in order to "test" the "effects" of Marker shards. Sounds like a recipe for "trouble" (and some gory scares). Between this release next month and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/08/dead-space-2-demo-due-december-21/">the demo later on this month</a>, the <em>Dead Space </em>franchise is about to get a whole lot <em>livelier</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/09/dead-space-aftermath-coming-to-dvd-and-blu-ray-on-january-25/">Dead Space Aftermath coming to DVD and Blu-ray on January 25</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 09 Dec 2010 21:30:00 EST. Just in case you aren't content with the video delivery service offered by the PlayStation Network, Sony has announced plans to introduce a third party video provider onto the PS3 XMB. Starting November 23, <a href="http://www.vudu.com/">VUDU</a> will join a growing list of video apps available on the console, including <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/14/netflix-native-app-for-ps3-available-on-oct-18/">Netflix</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/10/psa-hulu-plus-now-downloadable-for-all-us-ps3-owners/">Hulu Plus</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/10/nhl-gamecenter-live-brings-streaming-hockey-games-to-ps3-startin/">NHL GameCenter</a>.<br />
<br />
For those unfamiliar with the service, VUDU offers "more than 4,000 HD movies," which VUDU <a href="http://www.vudu.com/product_overview.html">claims</a> makes it the "world's largest HD library." The subscription-free service gives members access to on-demand rentals and purchases, in SD or the costlier "HDX" format -- 1080p HD with Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 surround sound. Prices are comparable to PSN's native video store, but thrifty PS3 owners will want to comparison shop. For example, VUDU's "$2 for 2 nights" rental specials generally undercut Sony's offerings, whereas PSN's "Deal of the Week" specials usually best VUDU's prices.<br />
<br />
To encourage newcomers to try out the service, VUDU is offering a free $5.99 credit to new registrants, "enabling them to watch their first HD movie on the service for free." It's certainly an enticing offer, one that will encourage PS3 owners to make the switch. But remember to stop by PlayStation's video service once in a while, as well. After all, you can't get new episodes of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/the-tester"><em>The Tester</em></a> anywhere else.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/vudu-ps3/">Vudu (PS3)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/vudu-ps3/#3577905"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/11/vudu-ui-ps3-1-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/vudu-ps3/#3577906"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/11/vudu-ui-ps3-2-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/vudu-ps3/#3577907"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/11/vudu-ui-ps3-3-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/vudu-ps3/#3577908"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/11/vudu-ui-ps3-4-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/vudu-ps3/#3577909"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/11/vudu-ui-ps3-5-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/17/vudu-movie-service-coming-to-ps3-on-november-23/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>VUDU movie service coming to PS3 on November 23</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/17/vudu-movie-service-coming-to-ps3-on-november-23/">VUDU movie service coming to PS3 on November 23</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 17 Nov 2010 00:05:00 EST. Oh hi there. The person hosting the video after the break is Gary Bigham, professional <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Live_action_role-playing_game">Live Action Role Player</a>. He says that he's "cashing in" by creating a <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/minecraft"><em>Minecraft</em></a> LARPing video, but you'll be the one cashing in -- fistfuls and fistfuls of the currency known as laughter.<br />
<br />
How do you roleplay as a <em>Minecraft</em> character, you may ask? It's harder than it sounds -- you have to try to build a shelter in the woods, use a duct-taped stone pickaxe to find precious gems and, whatever you do, always watch your back for those jerk creepers. Honestly, we're surprised Gary finishes the game as well as he does. Guess that's why he's a pro.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/10/live-action-role-playing-in-the-world-of-minecraft/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Live action role-playing in the world of Minecraft</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/10/live-action-role-playing-in-the-world-of-minecraft/">Live action role-playing in the world of Minecraft</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 10 Nov 2010 02:00:00 EST. "I hope five years from now we'll be winning Emmys for quality shows," PlayStation Network director Susan Panico said to Joystiq, imagining programming on the level of HBO's <em>Entourage</em> or <em>The Sopranos</em>. She was speaking sincerely about the platform's vision for original content.<br />
<br />
PSN might be synonymous with gaming, but going forward, Panico hopes it will also be recognized for its original video programming, which currently includes <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/tag/pulse/"><em>Pulse</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/qore"><em>Qore</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/the-tester"><em>The Tester</em></a>, a reality competition show about winning a job as a PlayStation game tester, recently renewed for a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/14/the-tester-season-2-handicapping-the-cast/">second season</a>.<br />
<br />
"I look at what HBO has done over several years, where they started just offering movies and went into the original production business," Panico said, revealing high aspirations for PSN's original content. "By no means am I putting <em>The Tester</em> with <em>The Sopranos</em> and what have you," she clarified, "but if you want to make yourself the go-to destination for content, you need to provide content that people can't get anywhere else."<br />
<br />
"We look at original programming and <em>The Tester</em> as the foundation for building out something much bigger."<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/01/psn-director-interview/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PSN director: The Tester is a 'foundation for something much bigger'</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/01/psn-director-interview/">PSN director: The Tester is a 'foundation for something much bigger'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 01 Nov 2010 18:25:00 EST. <div style="text-align: left;">G4 recently spoke with <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/warren-spector">Warren Spector</a> about Tomorrow City, a newly-revealed level in the upcoming <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/disney-epic-mickey">Epic Mickey</a></em>, and you can watch the interview after the break. Tomorrow City is based on Disneyland's Tomorrowland and features landmarks including the Moonliner Rocket, the Carousel of Progress and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PeopleMover">the PeopleMover</a>. <br />
<br />
The video also shows off more 2D gameplay, plus some solid platforming challenges. "The structure of the game is very <em>Zelda</em>-like," says Spector, "but once you get into those action spaces, we really wanted more platforming action." <em>Epic Mickey</em> will be out on Wii on November 30.</div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/14/disney-epic-mickeys-tomorrow-city-revealed/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Disney Epic Mickey's 'Tomorrow City' revealed</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/14/disney-epic-mickeys-tomorrow-city-revealed/">Disney Epic Mickey's 'Tomorrow City' revealed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 14 Oct 2010 01:00:00 EST. You'd think that getting bitten by something infused with radioactive power would be a bad thing, but everything we're learning from comic books and video games keeps convincing us otherwise. Take this latest trailer from <a href="http://www.retrocityrampage.com/">homage-fest</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/retro-city-rampage"><em>Retro City Rampage</em></a>, in which the player gets chomped on by <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/mario">a familiar-looking radioactive plumber</a> and, instead of succumbing to the extremely poisonous effects of decaying ionized particles, gains some sort of powerful super stomp ability to use on enemies.<br />
<br />
We've been on the fence about this whole thing, keeping this Peregrine falcon and this old nuclear power plant keycard around until we were sure it was safe, but this trailer has sealed the deal. We'll go over to the abandoned plant this Saturday, so if you don't see us around here on Monday, just look up.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/01/second-retro-city-rampage-trailer-should-not-be-used-as-medical/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Retro City Rampage trailer should not be used as medical advice</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/01/second-retro-city-rampage-trailer-should-not-be-used-as-medical/">Retro City Rampage trailer should not be used as medical advice</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 01 Oct 2010 09:30:00 EST. We've really got to give it to EA for these <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/medal-of-honor"><em>Medal of Honor</em></a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/02/medal-of-honor-trailer-previews-helicopters-vs-town-cage-fight/">Experience videos</a> -- there's no quick cuts or flashy editing, just pure, unadulterated gameplay. It's as close as you can get without actually holding the controller in your hand. In this latest edition, titled "High Value Target," you get a look at the game's Combat Mission multiplayer mode, which has the two teams either attacking or defending a series of objectives. In this case, it appears that the player's side is trying to escort tanks through a destroyed airfield, making for some pretty impressive visual spectacle.<br />
<br />
Of course, this video is missing one thing we experienced <em>a lot</em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/30/medal-of-honor-beta-ending-tomorrow-on-ps3-and-pc-august-9-on-3/">in the multiplayer beta</a> a while back -- all that time we spent waiting to respawn while dead. Sure, you could end up being as good as this guy, and sure, watching the action is more fun than watching a countdown timer. But next time, EA, maybe throw in at least one respawn and show the <em>complete</em> game. Whaddaya say?<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/11/medal-of-honor-gameplay-trailer-fuels-the-war-machine/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Medal of Honor gameplay trailer fuels the war machine</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/11/medal-of-honor-gameplay-trailer-fuels-the-war-machine/">Medal of Honor gameplay trailer fuels the war machine</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 11 Sep 2010 10:30:00 EST. Before you get your hopes too high, we feel morally compelled to inform you that the video posted after the jump, a purported gameplay clip from <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxXycBv3Rlk"><em>Sonic and Knuckles 3D</em></a>, isn't culled from any upcoming licensed game. In fact, it's not even from a fan-made game -- rather, it's just a pre-rendered video from a skilled 3D artist and YouTube user by the username of BlobVanDam.<br />
<br />
Spin-dash past the jump if you want to see the Mushroom Hill Zone Act 2 that never-will-be. Actually, that's a pretty defeatist attitude to adopt. We're sure that someday, in the fullness of time, this <em>delightful</em> vision will be realized. <div style="text-align: left;">Finally, with the release of the opening cinematic for <em>Disney Epic Mickey</em>, we're getting a bigger look at the story going on behind Warren Spector's ode to Disney animation. As expected, it involves some shenanigans with Mickey and a sorcerer (<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Disney%27s_Fantasia_characters#Yen_Sid">Yen Sid from <em>Fantasia</em></a>), a magic paintbrush, some paint and paint thinner. But even more intriguing are the many nods to old-school Disney cartoons, from all of the hats and objects placed on the walls to the dates and movie stills flying past in the quick montage near the end.<br />
<br />
Of course, it would probably take <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/17/interview-warren-spector/">a Disney aficionado like Spector</a> to catch all of those references zipping by, but even if you don't get everything, you can at least see that Mickey has unintentionally created the Phantom Blot, and has caused a little bit of chaos in Yen Sid's alternate reality, turning it into the Wasteland that the big-eared hero gets tossed into. Hopefully the game will be just as fun without knowing <em>why</em> that calendar above says "March 25."</div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/17/disney-epic-mickeys-opening-cinematic-is-probably-over-your-hea/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Disney Epic Mickey's opening cinematic is probably over your head</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/17/disney-epic-mickeys-opening-cinematic-is-probably-over-your-hea/">Disney Epic Mickey's opening cinematic is probably over your head</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 17 Aug 2010 20:40:00 EST. Seeing two images to create a 3D picture is so <em>earlier this year</em> -- Sony has been working on <a href="http://www.brokemycontroller.com/news/881-sony-files-two-patents-related-to-stereoscopic-screen-sharing">a patent that sends two images from one video screen</a> to two different people, allowing for two players to see different images on the same screen. Each player would need their own set of glasses (which would each pull off the right frames), which would then come with earphones for separate audio feeds, too.<br />
<br />
You'd need a special 3D television to do it, but there are all kinds of cool applications -- one person in your house could watch a movie while the other plays games, or you could do local split-screen multiplayer without actually splitting the screen (as seen in the diagram above). The patent even allows for more than two players, and there's even an implementation that would actually send two images each to two players, creating separate 3D views for both viewers. Both patents were filed a year ago, and have just come to light now. As 3D televisions become more common, we'll have to see if Sony brings an actual implementation of this tech to the consumer market.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/20/sony-patents-multiplayer-stereoscopic-system/">Sony patents multiplayer stereoscopic system</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 20 Jul 2010 22:00:00 EST. <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/lara-croft-and-the-guardian-of-light"><em>Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light</em></a> was one of our favorite games at this year's E3 -- while it's a new taste for the franchise, it certainly <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/18/hands-on-lara-croft-and-the-guardian-of-light/">seemed like one gamers will enjoy</a>. But even if all of the puzzle-solving and co-op has you worried that Lara's gone too cerebral, let this trailer reassure you: The girl still knows how to shoot things until they stop moving.<br />
<br />
She and partner Totec do so with all kinds of heavy weaponry, including flamethrowers, rocket launchers and whatever else they find laying around that ancient temple they're exploring. The video also shows off some of the game's relic and artifact system, which will not only let you customize weapons with various stats and abilities, but encourage replaying of the game, as some of the relics will require a few runs through the title to obtain. Watch the full trailer after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/19/lara-croft-still-likes-all-kinds-of-guns/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Lara Croft still likes all kinds of guns</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/19/lara-croft-still-likes-all-kinds-of-guns/">Lara Croft still likes all kinds of guns</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 19 Jul 2010 21:30:00 EST. <div style="text-align: left;">We don't know what extremely gracious act of charity and selflessness was committed somewhere in the universe to make this beautiful <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/scott-pilgrim-vs-the-world"><em>Scott Pilgrim vs. The World</em></a> game karmically possible, but whoever you are out there committing Mother Theresa-level good deeds, <em>thank you</em>.<br />

Thank you thank you thank you thank you. Darn that Darth Vader -- sure, he's a Sith Lord who betrayed his master, will blow up a planet without a second thought, and even threatens to kill his own soldiers, but honestly, you just can't trust the guy. <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/video/e3-2010-the-force/101182">This brand new E3 trailer</a> from LucasArts for <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/star-wars-the-force-unleashed-2"><em>Force Unleashed 2</em></a> shows the game's protagonist Starkiller getting betrayed by ol' helmethead yet again, and then lightsaber slicing and dicing his way out of a whole heap of space trouble.<br />
<br />
We already knew that Starkiller <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/12/star-wars-the-force-unleashed-2-revealed-intense/">would be dual-wielding lightsabers</a> in the game, and while this trailer is vague to say the least, it does hint at why we're seeing him whole and hale again, instead of the (spoiler) less-than-lively state we saw him in at the end of the last game. Looks like it's an <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0121765/"><em>Attack of the Clones</em></a> all over again. At least that force power looks fun -- hopefully we'll see more at E3 next week. Watch the whole thing after the jump.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/12/new-force-unleashed-2-trailer-shows-vader-doing-what-he-does-bes/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>New Force Unleashed 2 trailer shows Vader doing what he does best</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/12/new-force-unleashed-2-trailer-shows-vader-doing-what-he-does-bes/">New Force Unleashed 2 trailer shows Vader doing what he does best</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 12 Jun 2010 01:45:00 EST. It's like, we can only keep up this vault-plundering, mustache-twirling, damselnapping, puppy-kicking veneer before it gets a little long in the tooth, you know? We've long been thinking about seeing how the other half lives -- an opportunity that will soon be afforded to us by <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/city-of-heroes"><em>City of Heroes</em></a> upcoming, massive content expansion, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/city-of-heroes-going-rogue"><em>Going Rogue</em></a>.<br />

Ever since we found out that the mean streets of Pacific City had been ravaged by <em>even meaner</em> mutants in <em>Crackdown 2</em>, we've been curious about from whence said mutants sprung. Our curiosity was satisfied by <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hrfKi0RR89g">the second episode</a> in the animated "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/22/crackdown-2-gets-ultra-violent-prequel-cartoon/">Pacific City Archives</a>" prequel series, which tells of the exploits of twisted ex-Agency medical researcher Catalina Thorne.<br />
<br />
Check out the episode after the jump to see Thorne's fall from grace and how she introduced the mutant virus into the helpless population of Pacific City. If that's not grounds for reaching archvillain status in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/crackdown-2"><em>Crackdown 2</em></a>, we're not sure what is.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/01/new-crackdown-2-prequel-short-explains-origins-of-the-mutants/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>New Crackdown 2 prequel short explains origins of the mutants</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/01/new-crackdown-2-prequel-short-explains-origins-of-the-mutants/">New Crackdown 2 prequel short explains origins of the mutants</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 01 Jun 2010 16:30:00 EST. He's filled with pure evil and the second his master isn't looking, he'll probably plant a Lightsaber in his back. But the above video for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/star-wars-the-old-republic"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a>'s Sith Warrior -- which was revealed to have two advanced classes, <a href="http://www.swtor.com/info/holonet/classes/sith-warrior#specializations">the Marauder and the Juggernaut</a> -- offers a fairly less <em>seething</em> individual who apparently has a knack for the spoken word. <br />
<br />
His calm and smooth tone shows us that it's <em>not</em> just a <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Kr2XP0RCtI">Darth Maul</a> thing. Is that a result of like a weekend class at the Corruscant Community College or just a byproduct of giving into your hatred?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/30/star-wars-the-old-republics-sith-warrior-detailed/">Star Wars: The Old Republic's Sith Warrior detailed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 30 May 2010 13:30:00 EST. The new mode is a lot like the Cops and Robbers gametype -- with a twist, of course. In this case, the cop is an undercover player who must stop (with license to kill) the criminals and secure the stolen money while maintaining the guise of a criminal himself.<br />
<br />
So yeah, it's the video game equivalent of <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ShM8bGKVFXg"><em>Donnie Brasco</em></a>. <br />
