According to neoGAF user Sectus, alternate costume data mined from the Dead or Alive 5 demo has revealed the fighter's entire character list.

Every character from Dead or Alive 4 supposedly returns, along with series newcomers Mila and Rig, and Virtua Fighter veterans Sarah Bryant and Pai Chan. Each character also has around 6 costumes, assuming this all checks out, of course. Have you ever pondered what it would be like to blend Sega's super technical Virtua Fighter series with Street Fighter or Tekken? Well, ponder no more, as Sega has provided us with an answer. The end result would look something like the video embedded after the break, in which the company unveils the super fictional fighter, Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown. The simple, precise combos of the series have gone out the window, replaced with massive damage, fireballs and even Ultra Combo finishers.

Alas, as fun (blasphemous?) as it looks, it's only an April Fools' joke (for now). Which reminds us: You're going to see a lot of April Fools' jokes in the next 24 to 48 hours. We'll do our best to catalogue them here on Joystiq.
(Or: Virtua Fighter 5 Probably Not Really the Final Showdown Because the Game is Still Super Popular -- but we can understand why Sega went with the more pared-down title.)

So far, only a highly stylized teaser trailer for the (for now) arcade-only title has been released, along with a page on the official Japanese Virtua Fighter site that mentions (via machine translation) additional costumes, more character customization items and new moves. Of course, it's been almost three years since the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the Lindbergh-powered quarter-muncher hit the US, so we're not exactly holding out hope for this one popping up on store shelves in the States. But, hey, there's always PSN and XBLA.
The publisher announced two more playable characters today (well, four, actually, in pairs): Virtua Fighter's Akira and Jacky, and Bonanza Bros.' Mobo and Robo. The Virtua guys appear to be riding in a red Ferrari, which would add the OutRun franchise to the list as well. All these reveals are in line with the character portraits found hidden on the website.

NiGHTS will appear in the game as well, though not in a capacity that will cause superfans "DiGi" and "Trippy" to lose their bets and burn their NiGHTS memorabilia collections. Update: Whoops! Sounds like Sega America CEO Simon Jeffrey was totally out of touch. "Yu Suzuki is at Sega and is Creative officer at Sega Corp," Jeffrey told GameDaily this afternoon, recanting his original remark to Gamasutra (see below).

Original: If we had made games like Virtua Fighter, Out Run, Shenmue and Virtua Cop, we'd kind of hope that we could spend our later years with feet propped up in an expansive Sega office being fed peeled grapes by Amy Rose. But that's not the case for legendary Yu Suzuki who, according to a Gamasutra interview with CEO of Sega of America Simon Jeffery, is no longer employed by the company.

"Yeah. He's kind of his own man right now. Every now and again, he'll come up with an idea, and I don't think anything has come out of that yet, but we're still working with him," he said.

In other news, Shenmue Online confirmed for 2009! Wait, did we say confirmed? We meant "absolutely never ever going to happen so put your fan fic into a rocket and shoot it into space." As part of a "unique" t-shirt line, Japanese clothing retailer UNIQLO has unveiled a series of t-shirts celebrating three of Sega's iconic series: Sonic the Hedgehog, The House of the Dead and Virtua Fighter. The shirts feature simple, iconic designs (like Sonic's face, seen here, or individual VF characters), come in multiple colors, and cost only 1500 yen ($14.65) each. In short, they're just the kind of thing we'd like to see.

We'd say that, as usual, these are only available in Japan, but UNIQLO actually has stores in the UK, as well as one in New York. It is, then, possible that these have made it outside Japan, or may soon! We're just glad to be reminded of a time when Sega fandom was possible.
Japanese retailer UNIQLO celebrates Sega originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 09 Apr 2008 10:30:00 EST. X3F reports that SEGA has launched an auto-update for Virtua Fighter 5 on the Xbox 360. The update includes various bug fixes, and minor tweaks to the online gameplay experience. Most notably, however, the update adds the ability to save replays from online matches, and select pants for your character independent of the rest of the outfit.

Oh that's right. Now, El Blaze can be sporting Costume B, but wearing the pants from Costume A. It's a brave new world, people. Check out the full list of updates after the break.
Continue reading Virtua Fighter 5 update on 360 brings saved replays, pants

Virtua Fighter 5 update on 360 brings saved replays, pants originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 17 Jan 2008 05:00:00 EST. Available as a 674Mb download to all Xbox Live regions is a super new Virtua Fighter 5 demo that we hear is smoother than butta and more fun than a barrel of tacos. We're not sure what we mean by that, but darned if we're not excited and surprised to be getting to play Virtua Fighter 5 today. Thanks SEGA, you made our day and as a thank you we'll buy lunch next time. SEGA of America announced the game's gold status today and made sure to note that the game will sport online versus play as well as vibration feedback, both something its older sibling on the PS3 didn't do. Snap! No doubt about it, Virtua Fighter 5 will satisfy the hunger fighter fans have been craving and at the same time further drain our ever decreasing bank account. Speaking of which, we wonder if banks give out loans for video game purchases. We'll have to check on that.
Virtua Fighter 5: The golden fighter goes gold originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 11 Oct 2007 15:15:00 EST.
