Posting on the Zelda Miiverse page, Anouma writes, "<em>The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons</em>/<em>Oracle of Ages</em> will be released for Virtual Console on Nintendo 3DS in Japan, but it'll be a little while longer till the're out in other territories. We''d like to ask for your patience until they're ready for release. Thank you!" <br /><br />So it was foretold: <em>The Legend of Zelda:</em> <em>Oracle of Ages</em> and <em>Oracle of Seasons </em>will come to the 3DS eShop in Japan. The Capcom-developed Game Boy Color games, hits with fans and critics alike in 2001, arrive individually on the Virtual Console February 27, priced &yen;600 each (around $6.50), and then in a combined pack next month at &yen;1000 (around $10.50)<br /><br />As the reveal came in this morning's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/21/watch-japans-nintendo-direct-for-third-party-3ds-games-right-he/">3DS-focused Direct broadcast for Japan</a>, there's no news as yet on the re-releases heading westwards.<br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/21/zelda-oracle-of-ages-oracle-of-seasons-to-hit-3ds-eshop-in-jap/">Zelda: Oracle of Ages, Oracle of Seasons to hit 3DS eShop in Japan [update: Western release confirmed!]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 21 Feb 2013 07:00:00 EST. <p><em>Every other week, Mike Sylvester brings you <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/revolutionary/">REVOLUTIONARY</a>, a look at the wide world of Wii possibilities. </em></p>
<p> <span style="float: left; margin-right: 10px; margin-top: 7px;"> <script> var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/nintendo/Revolutionary_Wii_can_has_hard_drive'; </script> <script src="http://digg.com/api/diggthis.js"></script></span> If you're smitten with the Virtual Console, one thing we're sure you aren't in love with is having to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/11/wii-warm-up-swapping-them-out/">swap</a> games between an SD card and your Wii's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/06/wii-warm-up-storage-space/">internal memory</a>, or even worse -- deleting games to be <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/27/nintendo-finds-hard-drive-unnecessary/">re-downloaded</a> later. WiiWare is on its way and it's hard to imagine <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/26/my-trailer-as-a-king/">My Life as a King</a></em> demeaning itself to share its estate with less noble games. And certainly not with it bringing <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/25/wiiware-launched-impressions-rounded-up/">microtransactions</a> to the royal ball. And wouldn't it be dandy if some of our multiplatform ports had somewhere to store that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/03/wii-warm-up-lets-talk-rock-band-again/#comments">downloadable content</a> that everyone is raving about on <a href="http://playstation.joystiq.com/2008/03/20/rock-band-patch-adds-in-game-store/">other</a> consoles? </p>
<p>We <strike>want</strike> <strong>need</strong> more storage, and some of you have gathered to <a href="http://www.petitiononline.com/mod_perl/signed.cgin2i3n4t">plead</a> with Nintendo to sell a Wii Hard Drive. It appears that your cries just fall on deaf ears because they seem hardly driven to provide one. In this edition of Revolutionary, we'll examine why Wii can't have a hard drive.</p><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/23/revolutionary-wii-can-has-hard-drive/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Revolutionary: Wii can has hard drive?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/23/revolutionary-wii-can-has-hard-drive/">Revolutionary: Wii can has hard drive?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 23 Apr 2008 16:00:00 EST. Keeping expectations in check is the key to having a wholly satisfying life, so we probably shouldn't have grown accustomed to the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/31/bubble-bobble-top-hunter-light-crusader-come-to-virtual-consol/">three</a>-<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/26/double-dribble-vegas-stakes-ecco-jr-come-to-virtual-console/">game</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/19/wrecking-crew-sonic-3d-blast-super-air-zonk-on-virtual-console/">cornucopia</a> that once characterized <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/virtualconsolemonday">Nintendo's weekly Virtual Console release schedule</a>. Now that the standard has dropped to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/25/kirby-64-psychosis-roll-scroll-onto-virtual-console/">two</a>-<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/18/ninja-gaiden-iii-phantasy-star-ii-added-to-virtual-console/">per</a>-<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/11/lords-of-thunder-harvest-moon-crop-up-on-virtual-console/">week</a> and, occasionally (as today), <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/28/1080-degrees-now-boarding-virtual-console/">one solitary game</a>, we can't help but pine for the old days a bit. But it's our fault, really, for getting our nostalgia-fueled hopes up in the first place. This week's sole release is barely worth a bulleted list, but we'll use one anyway to describe:<br />
<ul>
    <li><em>Super Turrican</em> (Super NES, 1 player 800 Wii Shop Points) - Developed by Factor 5 (of Rogue Squadron fame), the 1993 side-scrolling, run-and-gun sequel to 1990's <span style="font-style: italic;">Turrican</span> has a decidedly old-school, <span style="font-style: italic;">Contra</span> vibe to it. Those who want to get a feel for the gameplay without shelling out the Wii Shop Points should check out <a href="http://turrican.gamevoice.de/hurrican_site/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Hurrican</span></a>, a more-than-satisfactory freeware clone.<br /></li>

Today's marks the <a href="http://www.nintendowiifanboy.com/2008/02/26/vc-tuesday-the-master-system-arrives/">release</a> of the Sega Master System's <em>Fist of the North Star</em> on the Japanese Virtual Console.<br /><br />The event marks the potential expansion of the Virtual Console library to a brave new world of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Sega_Master_System_games">Master System hits</a> such as ... um ... hmmm. Well, the <em>Alex Kidd</em> games were pretty cool, we guess. And hey, <em>Mortal Kombat</em> made it to the system ... although the Genesis version would probably be preferable. Well ... it's still cool anyway. Trust us.<br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/26/master-system-games-arrive-on-japanese-virtual-console/">Master System games arrive on Japanese Virtual Console</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 26 Feb 2008 11:55:00 EST. But does it make fiscal sense as well as organizational sense? To find out, the folks at <a href="http://www.vintagecomputing.com/index.php/archives/416">Vintage Computing &amp; Gaming</a> compared the price of current Virtual Console selections to the going rate for the same classic carts on eBay.<br /><br />The results, unsurprisingly, showed an average savings of about 50 percent over the eBay price across the VC library. Sure, you're paying a few extra dollars for ultra-common clunkers like <em>Double Dribble</em>, but you're saving nearly $200 on ultra-rare games like <em>Bonk 3: Bonk's Big Adventure</em>. In fact, Turbo-Grafx fans can save roughly 75% buying their library on the Wii rather than eBay.<br /><br />Of course, as VC&amp;G points out, games bought for the Virtual Console have functionally zero resale value, so those interested in collectability should shell out the extra money. Those interested in actually playing the games, however ...<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/31/calculating-the-virtual-consoles-savings-rate/">Calculating the Virtual Console's savings rate</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 31 Jan 2008 14:00:00 EST. <br />Punny headlines aside, <a href="http://www.wiishaft.com/">The Shaft</a> provides <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/classic+controller/">yet another way</a> to control all those Virtual Console downloads clogging up your Wii menu. The wired, 6" x 11" arcade-style stick from previously unheard-of Overline Gaming merges the proud tradition and size of arcade fighting sticks with the svelte, plastic styling of the Wii. It sports analog control for Nintendo 64 games as well as digital "resting points" in the eight primary directions for older-school gaming. Pre-orders are currently being taken for white, pink and black version for mid-December shipment -- $39.95 for one or $69.95 for two.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/11/12/wii-shaft-the-arcade-style-joystick-for-virtual-console-titles/">Engadget</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/14/overline-gives-wii-owners-the-shaft/">Overline gives Wii owners "The Shaft"</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 14 Nov 2007 13:56:00 EST. Siliconera's Spencer Yip put together the <a href="http://www.siliconera.com/2007/08/07/versus-battle-popular-virtual-console-games/">handy-dandy spreadsheet</a> you see above featuring the most popular Wii Virtual Console games, available for review now following the recent Wii <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/07/nintendo-wii-system-update-3-is-now-live/">update</a>. The list shows Japan on the left and the US on the right. Nobody seems to know how the popularity of these games is determined, after Siliconera made their list, it <a href="http://www.nintendowiifanboy.com/2007/08/08/popular-virtual-console-games-according-to-the-wii-shop-channel/">changed</a> for Wii Fanboy, then again when we checked. Hopefully the system will become clearer in time.<br /><br />Look at all that Mario in the Top 10, with a heavy dose of Link for the US. This will certainly be an interesting chart to watch as more games become available. Maybe it will finally spur Xbox Live Arcade to get one. It would be interesting to know what's popular on XBLA, at least we know it wouldn't be Mario all the way down.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.nintendowiifanboy.com/2007/08/08/popular-virtual-console-games-according-to-the-wii-shop-channel/">Wii Fanboy</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/09/wiis-most-popular-vc-games/">Wii's most popular VC games</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 09 Aug 2007 11:01:00 EST. Maybe! We can't be sure when <em>Sonic 3 </em>and <em>Super </em><em>Mario Bros. 3 </em>will find their way onto the VC, but at least we know they're on their way, thanks to the Office of Film and Classification.<br /><br />The Aussie equivalent of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ESRB/">ESRB</a> keeps a database of ratings just like the ESRB does. A bunch of games have been added, including a lot that are already out in other regions, and a few, like <em>Mario 3</em>, that are news. Of course, the best part of this for people who don't happen to have Australian consoles is that if a game is planned for one region, it's <em>terribly</em> likely it'll be out soon in others! <br /><br />Other things on the list that make us happy: <span style="font-style: italic;">Strider </span>(although we don't know if it's the <a href="http://www.screwattack.com/Flash%20HTML/VGV/Strider.html">Genesis version</a> or the <a href="http://www.nesplayer.com/reviews/striderr.htm">NES version</a>), <span style="font-style: italic;">Galaga '90</span>, and <span style="font-style: italic;">Probotector II</span>-- which is <span style="font-style: italic;"><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Contra">Super C</a>.</span> The full list of new updates is after the break!<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://vooks.net/modules.php?module=article&amp;id=12034">Vooks</a>]<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/16/super-mario-bros-3-riding-a-kuribos-shoe-onto-the-australian-v/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Super Mario Bros. 3 riding a Kuribo's Shoe onto the Australian VC</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/16/super-mario-bros-3-riding-a-kuribos-shoe-onto-the-australian-v/">Super Mario Bros. 3 riding a Kuribo's Shoe onto the Australian VC</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 16 Jul 2007 14:40:00 EST. What do they both have in common? A light-hearted approach to gaming and solid offerings for their respective genres. That's something we can get behind. <br />

This probably doesn't affect any readers here (although, if you're a Japan-local Wii Fanboy, let us know!) but we discovered something interesting while drooling at the Japanese Virtual Console page.<br /><br />Proving their <em>absolute </em>and irrational devotion to historical accuracy, the version of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Castlevania/">Castlevania</a> </em>going up on the VC this month will not be the same cartridge version that's already been released in the US and Europe. Instead, Japan is getting the original version, which was released for the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Famicom_Disk_System">Famicom Disk System</a> in 1986. The differences include a save state feature and a name entry screen with music unheard in the US version! Which, unfortunately, we can't find. The idea that there's <em>Castlevania </em>music out there that we haven't heard makes us kind of uncomfortable.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/06/japanese-vc-castlevania-is-the-famicom-disk-system-version/">Japanese VC Castlevania is the Famicom Disk System version</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 06 Jul 2007 17:05:00 EST. A couple of today's titles were also released in the U.S. this week, which means you can check out the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/02/vc-monday-madness-video-wrap-up-7-02-07/">video wrap-up</a> for a little game footage. <br /><br />Also, for some reason the format of the releases on the Nintendo Europe site seems to have changed, so let us know if these costs are not correct -- we're basing this off past VC pricing. <br />

<br />Making up for its <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/07/australia-to-be-bonked/">delayed arrival</a> to Australia's Virtual Console, the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/tg16">TurboGrafx-16</a> will debut in the world's smallest continent next week with eleven releases! Hudson's VC site lists that over a third of the games will be <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/shmup">shmups</a> -- no big surprise there -- but classics like <em>Dungeon Explorer</em>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=military+madness"><em>Military Madness</em></a>, and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/bomberman"><em>Bomberman '93</em></a> are also set to appear at the system's opening ceremony.<br /><br />The US, having been spoiled with dozens of TG-16 releases since the Wii's launch, will receive only one PC-Engine title next Monday: <em>Dragon Spirit</em>, an impossibly hard, vertical-scrolling shoot 'em up in which you pilot a blue dragon. Check past the post break for Hudson's planned releases across all territories this July.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/29/torrent-of-turbografx-16-titles-set-for-australias-virtual-console/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Torrent of TurboGrafx-16 titles set for Australia's Virtual Console</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/29/torrent-of-turbografx-16-titles-set-for-australias-virtual-console/">Torrent of TurboGrafx-16 titles set for Australia's Virtual Console</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 29 Jun 2007 12:00:00 EST. This week's Japanese Virtual Console update brings something <em>very rare </em>to the Wii: a role-playing game. And by Capcom's <em>Breath of Fire II</em> is a <a href="http://www.gamershell.com/gba/breath_of_fire_ii/review.html">pretty good one</a>. Also available are a fossilized <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Konami/">Konami</a> classic, the sequel to one of the weirdest game concepts ever to become a mainstream hit, and a bizarre first-person space adventure of some kind-- we can't tell if <em>Silent Debuggers </em>is an action game or a graphical text adventure. Anyone out there play the US release on the Turbografx-16?<br />

At 9AM PST, don your finest collared shirt to partake in a classy game of golf, flex your muscles in preparation for a grueling bout at the Olympics and then laugh maniacally as you mow down enemy soldiers in man's oldest sport, <em>senseless killing</em>. <br /><br />Hey, we didn't pick 'em.<br />
<ul>
    <li><em>NES Open Tournament Golf</em> (NES, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points): Enjoy a long and relaxing walk with Mario, stopping occasionally to batter an innocent white ball with a large club. Tournament and Match Modes sound enjoyable enough, though you'll probably want to put on a hat for Stroke Mode.<br /></li>
    <li><em>World Sports Competition</em> (TurboGrafx-16, 1-5 players, 600 Wii Points): Comprised of 18 events, the Olympics competition sees the world's most skilled photographers competing to capture the first image of a legendary creature, the Olym!<br /></li>
    <li><em>Bloody Wolf </em>(TurboGrafx-16, 1 player, 600 Wii Points): In this top-down shooter, it's up to you to rescue the president and otherwise blow up the sort of people who make jokes like the one in the paragraph above.</li>

The Virtual Console has made shooting games widely available for the first time in years. We like shooters, despite being categorically awful at them, so we're happy about this. But has the genre been disproportionately represented on the VC? There are <em>so many</em>, versus very few fighting games, and <em>no </em>role-playing games. <br /><br />Are you guys buying shooters? <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wwu">Are you happy</a> with the selection? The N64's ludicrously kinetic racer, <em>F-Zero X</em> (or <em>F0X</em>, if you want to be trite) today marks the 100th release on Nintendo's European <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/VirtualConsole/">Virtual Console</a> service. Pro-G <a href="http://www.pro-g.co.uk/news/15-06-2007-5726.html">reports</a> that the game arrives on the PAL Wii at a cost of 1000 Wii Points and is joined by side-scrolling TurboGrafx platformer, <em>J.J. &amp; Jeff,</em> for 600 Wii Points.<br /><br />America's Virtual Console received its 100th title last week in the form of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/04/three-titles-join-zelda-iis-virtual-console-celebration/"><em>Zelda II: The Adventure of Link</em></a>, highlighting Nintendo's steady release of retro titles since the Wii launched in November 2006. The quantity of titles is certainly not an issue, but the lack of enhancements and the occasional, questionable release makes passing judgment on quality and pricing more difficult, especially when we so easily get ourselves wrapped in the warm blanket of nostalgia. We expect things to get interesting once the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/03/impossible-mission-to-stay-in-wii-shop-channel-forever/">Wii Shop</a> joins <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/xbla">Xbox Live Arcade</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/psn">PlayStation Network</a> in providing original games.</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/15/f-zero-x-is-euro-virtual-consoles-100th-game/">F-Zero X is Euro Virtual Console's 100th game</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 15 Jun 2007 10:35:00 EST. But it seemed like a good time to stop and ask your opinion. What games do you think deserve a VC release, and why? Go ahead and <a href="http://nintendowiifanboy.com/tag/wwu">throw out</a> a few titles. Don't be shy. We (probably) won't make fun of you; after all, we've been baring our favorites, for good and for ill. So join us and let us know what you're willing to drop five or ten bucks on.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/15/wii-warm-up-your-choices-for-the-vc/">Wii Warm Up: Your choices for the VC</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 15 Jun 2007 09:00:00 EST. What have you not minded spending money on? We've been talking about the VC all week, so of course this question just begs to be answered ... and we expect a hot debate. So <a href="http://nintendowiifanboy.com/tag/wwu">let's get it on</a>!<br /><br />We fully expect to hear a lot about various <em>Zelda</em> titles and maybe a few <em>Castlevanias </em>(we <em>better</em> hear some <em>Castlevania</em>) and perhaps an <em>F-Zero</em> or two, but surely someone will make <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/bloggers/jc-fletcher">JC</a> proud and name <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/27/ninja-spirit-headed-to-vc-we-take-full-credit/"><em>Ninja Spirit</em></a> or something.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/14/wii-warm-up-best-of-the-best/">Wii Warm Up: Best of the best</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 14 Jun 2007 09:00:00 EST. At the time, you were convinced it was the <em>best game ever</em>. As soon as it was released for the VC, you raced to the Wii, credit card clutched in one sweaty, excited hand. This <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/virtualconsolemonday">Virtual Console Monday</a> highlights not only gaming's underlying obsession with golden objects, but our disgusting habit of putting painful puns in paragraphs where they don't belong. Indeed, golden weapons, golden rings and golden nuggets have combined to provide one Au-some <a href="http://press.nintendo.com/articles.jsp?id=12438">selection</a> of retro titles:<br />
<ul>
    <li><em>Lode Runner</em> (NES, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points): The <em>Runner</em> being some sort of crazed kleptomaniac with a shovel, as best we can tell. Grab the gold, avoid the robots and scream in agony as you plummet into your own hole. Again.</li>
    <li><em>Sonic the Hedgehog 2</em> (Genesis, 1-2 players, 800 Wii points): A true platforming classic, <em>Sonic 2</em> takes the 'hog to space and back. Note: Playing this game may cause the Chemical Plant Zone theme to become permanently lodged in your brain.</li>
    <li><em>Golden Axe II </em>(Genesis, 1-2 players, 800 Wii points): With names like Ax-Battler, Tyris-Flare and Gilius Thunderhead, is there any question as to why your band of heroes would need to defeat someone called Dark Guld? We think not.</li>

With over 100 games now available on the Virtual Console, many of you have probably played something this time around that you never got around to before. As new experiences, how do these games hold up? Or are you unwilling to buy anything you didn't already love in a past life?<br /><br />So why is the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/28/vc-monday-madness-three-tons-of-awesome-now-with-actraiser/"><em>ActRaiser</em> </a>box featured here? Because this blogger <em>never played it</em> back in the day, and after playing it now, pretty much considers the sixteen years without <em>ActRaiser</em> to be a <em>mockery of life</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/11/wii-warm-up-all-new-to-you/">Wii Warm Up: All new (to you)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 11 Jun 2007 09:00:00 EST. Don't think that limits the choices, however; this week, you can choose your poison -- puzzle, shooter, or ... uh ... <em>Balloon Fight</em>. It's fighting. With balloons. Which is, of course, <em>awesome</em>.<br />

After approximately 325 different and generally inappropriate permutations, we finally concluded that the above and dreadfully straightforward headline would be best suited to conveying the arrival of today's four new old <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/virtualconsolemonday">Virtual Console</a> games. "Zelda Moons Midori on Funkotron" was certainly a viable option, but it simply inspired the wrong sort of mental image. We actually want you to envision these four games arriving on the Wii's Virtual Console service at 9AM PST today:<br />
<ul>
    <li><em>Milon's Secret Castle (</em>NES, 1 player, 500 Wii Points): Though it's not much of a <em>secret</em> castle if the title gives it away, it certainly is one that adheres to video game tradition. Expect to rescue a princess and several valuable items -- musical instruments in this case -- within its recesses.<br /></li>
    <li><em>ToeJam &amp; Earl in Panic on Funkotron</em> (Genesis, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points): Video game tradition is given the boot here, with amusingly mismatched aliens, <em>Toejam &amp; Earl,</em> saving their planet by ridding it of a human scourge.<br /></li>
    <li><em>Dead Moon </em>(TurboGrafx16, 1 player, 600 Wii Points): Alright, now we're back to protecting the Earth from alien invasion. It's why we have side-scrolling shooters like this one.<br /></li>

Doesn't it seem strange that we've already reached such a milestone? While not everything about the Virtual Console can be perfect for everyone, of course, we must say that we're pleased that they've held to such a regular schedule of releases. If there's nothing for you in any given week, you've only to wait for the next. So now that we've reached this milestone, <a href="http://nintendowiifanboy.com/tag/wwu">how do you feel</a> about the Virtual Console so far?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/04/wii-warm-up-100-games/">Wii Warm Up: 100 games</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 04 Jun 2007 09:00:00 EST. Nintendo reported today that they've sold 4.7 million Virtual Console downloads worldwide. <br /><br />Game|Life's Chris Kohler did the math (as he did for the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/28/virtual-console-sales-down-in-the-period-pre-ninja-spirit/">last release</a> of VC sales data) and found that the 1.4 million games sold in May is more than twice the average sales for any month in the previous quarter. What got you guys buying last month? It was <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/vc-monday-madness/">Dave's videos</a>, wasn't it? Or was it the bounty of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ninjaspirit">ninja</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ninjagaiden">games</a>? Either way, we're delighted.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/01/virtual-console-sales-up-in-the-period-post-ninja-spirit/">Virtual Console sales up in the period post-Ninja Spirit</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 01 Jun 2007 16:40:00 EST. Not all speedruns are <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/24/super-mario-bros-in-less-time-than-it-takes-to-warm-up-a-lean-c/">worth covering</a> on Wii Fanboy, but when the game is <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/14/vc-monday-madness-more-ninja-than-you-can-shake-a-shuriken-at/">Ninja Gaiden</a>, </em>we think everybody should know about it. We were happy the one time we made a <em>run</em> of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/22/ryu-hayabusa-apparently-enjoys-the-virtual-console/">Ninja Gaiden</a>,</em> and that took like a <em>week.</em> But not only did Tommy Montgomery complete <em>Ninja Gaiden, </em>but he did so in a record-setting 13:49. <br />
<br />
That's it. We quit gaming. You guys can go watch the video after the break, then download <em>Ninja Gaiden </em>on the Virtual Console and try it yourselves.Check the link for videos of other <span style="font-style: italic;">Ninja Gaiden </span>speedruns too. We're just going to sit for a minute, and reevaluate our lives.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/28/13-minute-ninja-gaiden-speedrun-we-are-all-inadequate/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>13 minute Ninja Gaiden speedrun: We are all inadequate</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/28/13-minute-ninja-gaiden-speedrun-we-are-all-inadequate/">13 minute Ninja Gaiden speedrun: We are all inadequate</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 28 May 2007 13:30:00 EST. We need to write <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/vo">Virtually Overlooked</a> columns about Turbografx-16 launch games more often, because we look really cool when those games show up on the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/virtual-console">Virtual Console</a>. Last time it was <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/15/virtually-overlooked-ninja-spirit/"><em>Ninja Spirit</em></a>; this Monday: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/05/virtually-overlooked-j-j-and-jeff/"><em>J.J. &amp; Jeff</em></a><em>!</em> We'll say it right now, before the actual <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=Madness">Madness</a> ensues: buy it if you like <em>Adventure Island.</em> We obviously love it. Sure, it's not the Japanese version, but it's functionally identical. We'd like to personally thank <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Hudson/">Hudson</a> for pushing <em>World Sports Competition </em>back a month to give us <em>J.J. &amp; Jeff</em> that much sooner. <br /><br />And after capping off May with a great game that only we like, Hudson is giving us more weird, wonderful TG16 stuff in June. We might be the only people who like <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/China_Warrior">China Warrior</a>, </em>but we <em>really like China Warrior. </em>It's a <em>Kung Fu </em>clone starring a Bruce Lee clone, and it has <em>giant </em>sprites. Also flying tea. It's weirdly enjoyable, and one of the games we've been waiting for since we first heard about Turbografx-16 games on the Virtual Console. Also coming in June: <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_Moon_%28game%29"><em>Dead Moon</em></a>, <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloody_Wolf">Bloody Wolf</a>, </em>and, of course, <em>World Sports Competition.</em><br /><br />But, as usual, Japan's getting the <a href="http://vc-pce.com/jpn/j/index.html"><em>real </em>treasure</a>: <em>Bonk 3, China Warrior, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neutopia_2">Neutopia 2</a>, <a href="http://www.allgame.com/cg/agg.dll?p=agg&amp;sql=1:15493">Silent Debuggers</a>, </em>and ... <em><a href="http://www.allgame.com/cg/agg.dll?p=agg&amp;sql=1:2665">Devil's Crush</a>.</em> We wish we had the money to buy everyone a copy of <em>Devil's Crush.</em> Even if you don't think you'll like it, you need it.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/26/june-best-vc-month-ever-for-a-small-subset-of-wii-fanboy-blogge/">June: best VC month ever for a small subset of Wii Fanboy bloggers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 26 May 2007 11:15:00 EST. It features the same kind of side-scrolling action as the original, with the addition of shadow-ninja clones like the ones found in <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/15/virtually-overlooked-ninja-spirit/">Ninja Spirit</a>. </em>The box warns that the game is "hard to beat!!" and we can in fact confirm this.<br />
<br />
Also newly rated is Sega's <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shining_in_the_Darkness">Shining in the Darkness</a>,</em> the first game in the <em>Shining </em>series. Don't be discouraged by the fact that the series has been thoroughly ruined by <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shining_Force_Series">countless mediocre spinoffs and sequels</a>-- while <em>Shining in the Darkness </em>isn't as well-regarded as the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shining_Force"><em>Shining Force</em></a> games, it can still be fun for people who are into hardcore dungeon crawling.<br />

A separate Wii "Game Channel" for original content has been <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/26/wii-to-get-original-downloadable-titles-game-channel-possible/">mentioned</a> before by Hudson Entertainment director of marketing John Lee. <br /><br />Is Nintendo considering revamping its download service or simply augmenting what's there? We certainly wouldn't be opposed to a better way of organizing or VC titles. If so, too bad. Suffer.<br /><br />There's a lot to love about the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/virtual-console/">Virtual Console</a> (we've downloaded several of the reasons), but the system for adding points is not one of them. Does it <a href="http://nintendowiifanboy.com/tag/wwu">bother you</a> that you must add funds in set increments? Is it time for everyone to get away from these point systems and buying blocks and just let us perform direct dollar-for-dollar transactions? It's not like they're fooling us. Even if converting points-to-dollars required a complex mathematical formula, we'd be able to perform it lightning fast. After all, we're <em>serious fans</em> here. Or do you feel it's a non-issue? It's likely that we'll spend the points anyway. We did mention that we're<em> serious fans</em>, right?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/22/wii-warm-up-but-what-about-five-dollars/">Wii Warm Up: But what about five dollars?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 22 May 2007 09:04:00 EST. When discussing the forthcoming release of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/03/rumor-impossible-mission-remake-going-to-wii-shop/"><em>Impossible Mission</em></a> with PALGN, Cale said, "I wouldn't say Virtual Console, because they're not actually calling it the Virtual Console ...." <br /><br />In a way, this makes sense, but it opens the doors of speculation as to just what this <em>other</em> download service will be like. We would have assumed it would simply be another feature of the Shopping channel, but Cale indicated the service might resemble <a href="http://xbox360fanboy.com/tag/xbla">Xbox Live Arcade</a>. If Cale is to be believed, we don't have long to wait when it comes to finding out just how things will be handled -- he expects Nintendo will start making announcements within the next two months.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/21/original-dlc-to-have-own-service-on-wii/">Original DLC to have own service on Wii?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 21 May 2007 16:30:00 EST. <div align="left"><a href="http://www.lyricsfreak.com/t/talking+heads/warning+sign_20135051.html">Warning sign of things to come</a>: This week's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/virtual-console">Virtual Console</a> update in Japan has got us buying up Wii Points and deleting the Everybody Votes Channel in anticipation. <br /></div>
<br />This Wednesday, Wii owners lucky enough to have access to the awesome Japanese Virtual Console will be able to download <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Hudson/">Hudson</a>'s <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_Zonk">Air Zonk</a>,</em> the future-<em>Bonk </em>cute 'em up for the Turbografx-16. Also from Hudson, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Challenger_(video_game)"><em>Challenger</em></a> for the Famicom, which we hadn't really heard of! Here's a little pre-Monday <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/vc-monday-madness/">Virtual Console Madness</a>, courtesy of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Hudson/">Hudson</a>. Get your Wii Points ready, because our personal favorite <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/31/wii-warm-up-shooting-the-core/">shmup</a> ever is going to be available for download next week in the US. <br /><br /><em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blazing_Lazers">Blazing Lazers</a> (Gunhed </em>in Japan)<em> </em>is a vertical shooter for the Turbografx-16 that differs from other vertical shooters in one important way: <em>really fun weapons.</em> There are four categories of weapons, each of which can be upgraded to five different levels. Our favorite is the enemy-seeking green lightning beam thing. It's <em>pretty.</em><br /><br />[Via <a href="http://gonintendo.com/?p=18101">GoNintendo</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/18/blazing-lazers-confirmed-for-monday-vc-release/">Blazing Lazers confirmed for Monday VC release</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 18 May 2007 18:00:00 EST. <br />We're more than just a tad bit envious over <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=LittleBigPlanet">LittleBigPlanet</a></em>, Media Molecule's ultra-cute, ultra-customizable platformer for the PS3; ever since the title was announced at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/GDC/">GDC</a>, we've been downright jealous. Videos of the game's cooperative possibilities have turned us into internet stalkers, following every online preview and press release in secret, constantly reloading <em>LBP's</em> MySpace page every five minutes to make sure that other guys aren't moving into our territory with flirtatious comments. <br /><br />So seeing that players will not only be able to create landscapes that mimic scenes from classic games (e.g. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/supermariobros">Super Mario Bros.</a>, World 1-2), but likely also dress up their characters to look like Nintendo's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mario">mustachioed mascot</a> has inflamed within us the sort of covetous lust that Moses warned against after coming down from the mount. The <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/virtual-console/">Virtual Console</a> has been a great way for us to play old classics, but seeing Sony's plans for its PlayStation Network and comparing it to what we've heard so far about <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/impossiblemission">original, downloadable games coming to the Wii</a> has us feeling like chumps. <br /><br />[Thanks Elmer!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/18/lbp-taunts-us-with-mario-sack-boy-concept-art/">LBP taunts us with Mario Sack Boy concept art</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 18 May 2007 17:10:00 EST. Of course, readers in Europe and Australia already know this, because the games mysteriously turned up for download <a href="http://forums.nintendo.com/nintendo/board/message?board.id=vc&amp;message.id=219779">two days early</a>! VC Wednesday just doesn't have the same ring to it, you know? <br /><br />This week on the VC:<br />
<ul>
    <li><em>Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest</em> - SNES - 800 Wii points</li>
    <li><em>Mario &amp; Yoshi</em> - NES - 500 Wii points</li>
</ul>
Did you spring for either of these?
