<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/04/hands-on-star-wars-the-old-republic/">We've spoken</a> before about how BioWare's upcoming MMO, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/star-wars-the-old-republic"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a>, will be the wordiest video game in the history of mankind, but <a href="http://www.swtor.com/news/article/20090710_001">a recent article on the game's official site</a> has given even further detail into the process behind the title's verbosification. If you've ever been interested in voice acting, it's definitely worth a read, as we're fairly certain the game will go down in VO history for its unrivaled ambition.<br /><br />If the process behind the game's voice work does nothing for you, perhaps a few more numeric comparisons will float your boat -- the script, which is the size of "40+ novels" (or 10 <em>KOTOR</em>'s!) is being voiced by over 100 voice actors in five cities, who, by the end of the project, will have performed over 1,000 four-hour recording sessions. That is a <em>great deal</em> of talking.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://news.bigdownload.com/2009/07/11/voice-acting-for-star-wars-the-old-republic-gone-over-in-detail/">Big Download</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/11/star-wars-the-old-republics-voice-acting-process-detailed/">Star Wars: The Old Republic's voice acting process detailed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 11 Jul 2009 20:30:00 EST. <div style="text-align: left;"><em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/virtually-overlooked">Virtually Overlooked</a> has taken over Wii Fanboy! All <a href="http://nintendowiifanboy.com/tag/voweek">this week</a>, members of the staff will be outlining their personal picks for future Virtual Console releases.<br /></em>Everyone can guess how my childhood was spent, since I talk about old games constantly. So, instead of relating a nostalgic anecdote for you, I'm going to use this intro space to tell you about the last week or so.<br /><br />When I'm not <span style="font-style: italic;">personally advancing the cause of random old games on next-generation consoles</span>, I'm a full-time grad student at the University of North Texas, working on a master's degree in library science. From last Thursday until yesterday, I was in the midst of my capstone-- a seven-day marathon paper-writing session meant to be the final test of my suitability as a librarian. My wife and I were also preparing to move from Texas to Washington, which happened this Saturday. Add my regular coursework and job responsibilities to that, and, as you can imagine, I've been a complete wreck. My Fanboy colleagues are probably rolling their eyes right now as I complain again about my workload, but I feel like it was a pretty significant experience, one I hope never to repeat.<br /><br />I am now safely ensconced in a Washingtonian apartment, and I turned in my last essay in the early hours of Thursday morning. Getting a chance to write about a bunch of old games is like a vacation. I've been looking forward to this all week.<br /><br />Since this is a VO <span style="font-style: italic;">special</span> week, I'm taking the opportunity to talk about more mainstream games than I usually cover. So there's a better chance that you guys have played this stuff, and we can all share in some retro-euphoria. </div>

<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;"> </p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;">Some of our favorite NES games are the ones that were completely<em><span style="font-style: normal;"> unlike their boxarts. Companies didn't think American kids would go for Japanese-looking art, so they <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Frazetta">Frank Frazetta</a>'d up their characters for the covers of their cartridges. Games that, from the covers, appeared to be heavy sci-fi or fantasy, with square-jawed, beefy characters in dramatic poses would usually turn out to be the cutesiest, chibi-est platformers on the system.</span></em></p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;">Vic Tokai mastered the art of deceptively Western cover art, with painted covers that always stuck out on the shelves for being so undefinably weird. <em>Clash at Demonhead</em><span style="font-style: normal;"> has one of the best Vic Tokai boxarts ever. Also it's fun.</span></p>

<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/24/virtually-overlooked-boku-dracula-kun/">Last week</a>, I asked for reader suggestions for this week's Virtually Overlooked. One reader suggested <em>The Guardian Legend</em>, and I thought that was a perfectly reasonable suggestion. <em>The Guardian Legend </em>was one of the biggest sleeper hits of the NES era, and something that is definitely worth checking out, especially for fans of <em>Ys</em> and <em>Faxanadu</em>.<br /><br />It was only later that I realized that I was thinking of <em>Legacy of the Wizard.</em> I get those two mixed up a lot. They both fall into that "sleeper" category, they were both published by Br&oslash;derbund, and they both have "Leg" in the title. They're practically the same game, except that one's a hybrid vertical shooter/<em>Zelda</em>-style adventure developed by Compile, and the other is a side-scrolling action RPG from Nihon Falcom. But other than that, <em>the same game.<br /><br /></em>Inspired by my inability to keep two similar things separate, I thought this week we could look at some more NES games I get confused about, either because they're so similar or because I'm so dumb. </p><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/31/virtually-overlooked-special-a-bunch-of-nes-games-i-get-mixed-u/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Virtually Overlooked Special: A bunch of NES games I get mixed up with each other</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/31/virtually-overlooked-special-a-bunch-of-nes-games-i-get-mixed-u/">Virtually Overlooked Special: A bunch of NES games I get mixed up with each other</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 31 May 2007 16:40:00 EST. <p style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><em><span style=""><span style="font-style: normal;">Saying that </span><em>Spiritual Warfare</em><span style="font-style: normal;"> is the best game Wisdom Tree ever made doesn't really encourage anyone to give it a look. <p style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><span style="font-style: normal;">Some of the games we cover in this feature are worth talking about just because of their concepts. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/zombienation"><em>Zombie Nation</em></a>, about a giant flying head, for example. <em>Bronkie the Bronchiasaurus</em> might be the ultimate conceptually-interesting game, at least to us, since it is one of the most bizarre and incongruous things ever to appear on a console. <em>Bronkie</em> is an educational side-scrolling platformer for the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/snes">SNES</a> about an anthropomorphic dinosaur with asthma.</span></p><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/26/virtually-overlooked-bronkie-the-bronchiasaurus/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Virtually Overlooked: Bronkie the Bronchiasaurus</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/26/virtually-overlooked-bronkie-the-bronchiasaurus/">Virtually Overlooked: Bronkie the Bronchiasaurus</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 26 Apr 2007 18:30:00 EST. <p style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><span style=""><em>Golgo 13: Top Secret Episode</em><span style="font-style: normal;"> isn't exactly a great game. In fact, it's more like an awkward agglomeration of a lot of not-that-great games into one game that is mostly mediocre. But somehow, out of its many imperfect elements, it manages to deliver an impressively James-Bond cool story that motivates players to continue the experience.</span></span></p>

<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><em>Arkista's Ring </em><span style="font-style: normal;">is an action/adventure/puzzle game about an elf girl who battles giant scorpions, orcs, and forest-dwelling <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ninja">ninja</a> in a labyrinth-like forest, all displayed in the charming square-tile graphical style popular with games like <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/zelda">Zelda</a>.</em> It was released for the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/nes">NES</a> in 1990, published by American Sammy. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/sammy">Sammy</a> now owns <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/sega">Sega</a>, and Sega and Nintendo are newly in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/28/nintendo-and-sega-execs-talk-about-sonic-and-mario-at-the-olympi/">love</a>. So today's game is kind of timely, in an oblique way. You can download <em><a href="http://www.miraigamer.net/cavestory/">Cave Story</a> </em>right now and play it on the computer on which you're reading this article, <a href="http://homepage2.nifty.com/rochet/storage/dou_1006.zip">PC</a> or <a href="http://www.nakiwo.com/software.htm">Mac</a>. <p style="margin-bottom: 0in;">Welcome to our weekly feature, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/vo">Virtually Overlooked</a>, wherein we talk about games that aren't on the Virtual Console yet, but should be. Call it a <em>retro-speculative.</em></p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;">With the combination of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wiimote">Wiimote</a> and the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/Virtual-Console">Virtual Console</a>, it would seem that the point of the Wii is to simultaneously provide new kinds of play and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/vo">classic</a> games from the past. Irem's <em>Photograph Boy </em>( Japanese title: <em>Gekisha Boy</em><em>)</em><span style="font-style: normal;"><em>, </em>released in Japan for the PC Engine (<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/tg16">Turbografx-16</a>) is both at once: a completely unique experience that came out in 1992 and had seemingly no influence on game design until </span><em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/pokemon">Pokemon</a> Snap.</em></p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><em>Photograph <span style="">Boy</span></em><span style="font-style: normal;"><span style=""> belongs to a genre populated only by itself and its Playstation 2 sequel: the nonviolent side-scrolling rail shooter. And if, for some reason, novelty isn't enough, <em>Photograph Boy</em> is <em>fun!</em><br /></span></span></p><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/08/virtually-overlooked-photograph-boy/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Virtually Overlooked: Photograph Boy</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/08/virtually-overlooked-photograph-boy/">Virtually Overlooked: Photograph Boy</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 08 Mar 2007 20:00:00 EST. Call it a <em>retro-speculative.</em><br /><br />We didn't intend to cover the same <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/22/virtually-overlooked-snatcher/">series</a> two weeks in a row, but <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/23/japanese-virtual-console-gets-two-new-systems/">recent</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/20/zombies-and-turtles-found-on-esrb/">developments</a> in the world of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/virtual-console">Virtual Console</a> made a discussion of a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/konami">Konami</a> RPG for the MSX2 computer seem timely. Maybe, we thought, our prayers for <span style="font-style: italic;">Snatcher</span> caused the universe to swing things our way a little bit. Well, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/vo">here</a>'s another appeal.<br /></p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><em>SD Snatcher </em><span style="font-style: normal;">takes the violent, gritty, sci-fi detective story of </span><em>Snatcher</em><span style="font-style: normal;">, and presents it as a turn-based RPG populated by big-headed "super deformed" characters. We choose to believe this decision was some postmodern playfulness from Hideo <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/kojima">Kojima</a>-- deliberately downplaying the dramatic aspects of his game and overlaying obvious videogame conventions on top of it, like when Psycho Mantis in </span><em>Metal Gear Solid</em><span style="font-style: normal;"> read your memory card. Or it could just have been that Japanese gamers like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/rpg">RPG</a>'s a lot.</span></p><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/01/virtually-overlooked-sd-snatcher/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Virtually Overlooked: SD Snatcher</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/01/virtually-overlooked-sd-snatcher/">Virtually Overlooked: SD Snatcher</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 01 Mar 2007 17:35:00 EST. Call it a <em>retro-speculative.</em><br /><br />This week, we'd like to talk about <em>Snatcher,</em> a Sega CD game from Konami released in the US in 1994. The game was also released in Japan for the MSX2, PC8801, PC Engine CD-Rom, Playstation, and Saturn.<br /><br /><strong>Why the game hasn't been announced for Virtual Console yet</strong>: Not too long ago, the obvious answer to this question would have been "because it is a graphical text adventure." Luckily, however, the DS has changed that, bringing an era where <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/phoenixwright">graphical</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/24/metareview-hotel-dusk-room-215/">text</a> adventures are the subjects of rabid fandom. What hasn't changed is that <em>Snatcher</em> is a Sega CD game, and Nintendo has made no announcements regarding support for CD systems. The size of the files may be prohibitive, although it would be possible to save space by compressing the sound and music.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/22/virtually-overlooked-snatcher/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Virtually Overlooked: Snatcher [update 1]</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/22/virtually-overlooked-snatcher/">Virtually Overlooked: Snatcher [update 1]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 22 Feb 2007 12:45:00 EST.
