The game will support voice chat on other platforms.<br /><br />Voice chat is not a standard feature for the Wii U. Late last week it was revealed that voice chat is only supported through third-party, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/09/19/turtle-beach-producing-wii-u-headsets/">officially licensed headsets</a> plugged into the headphone jack of the WiiPad. Yes, the WiiPad has a built-in microphone, but don't hurt yourself trying to figure why that won't work. Also, things get really complicated when you realize the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/06/03/wii-u-pro-controller-unveiled-looks-awfully-familiar/">Pro Controller</a> doesn't have a headphone jack.<br /><br />We reached out to Nintendo for a comprehensive list of titles that support voice chat from the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/09/26/wii-u-launch-supported-by-23-day-one-releases-in-north-america/">Wii U launch line-up</a>. It'd know, right?<br /><br />"Wii U will have in-game chat functionality for select games, including, but not limited to, <em>Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, Assassin's Creed 3 and Mass Effect 3</em>," the company responded to our query. "This feature will be supported by licensed stereo headsets that plug directly into the headphone port of the Game Pad. Licensed headsets are available from Turtle Beach and TRITTON."<br /><br />Apparently the company is playing it close to the chest. The Wii U launches in under a month.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/10/22/sonic-and-all-stars-racing-transformed-wont-have-voice-support/">Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed won't have voice support on Wii U</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 22 Oct 2012 19:00:00 EST. Select games will support voice chat via third-party, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/09/19/turtle-beach-producing-wii-u-headsets/">officially licensed headsets</a> plugged into the WiiPad's headphone jack, but voice chat will not be standard across all games or even the system itself. Even though the WiiPad has a built-in microphone, it can't be used for voice chat.<br /><br />Things get a bit more complicated when you enter the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/06/03/wii-u-pro-controller-unveiled-looks-awfully-familiar/">Pro Controller</a> into the mix. The Pro Controller doesn't even have a headphone jack, so for a game like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/10/17/black-ops-2-wii-u-wont-launch-with-call-of-duty-elite/"><em>Call of Duty: Black Ops 2</em></a>, players will need to plug their headset into the WiiPad and set it next to them while they play with the Pro Controller.<br /><br />So far the only games listed to support in-game voice chat are <em>Assassin's Creed 3</em>, <em>Mass Effect 3</em> and <em>Black Ops 2</em>. Nintendo has yet to announce voice chat support for any further games, never mind detailed plans of the Wii U's online suite.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/10/18/wii-u-voice-chat-sounds-pretty-complicated/">Wii U voice chat sounds pretty complicated</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 18 Oct 2012 20:00:00 EST. Fear not, there's some good <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/24/gamestop-intentionally-removing-deus-ex-onlive-coupons-from-reta/">news</a> to report about <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/onlive">OnLive</a> today as well. CEO Steve Perlman told Joystiq about three new features that are live on the cloud-gaming service ... right now.<br />
<br />
Group voice chat allows users to specify "groups" of people, and maintain persistent chat sessions with them, even when they're playing different games, accessing menus, etc. It's even possible to send out an email from within the service inviting group members to chat.<br />
<br />
Second, parental controls will allow parents to set limits on the content their kids can play, along ESRB or PEGI lines, with the potential to fine-tune to allow individual games (in the case of, say, unrated indie games). "With a different account, if [parents] want," Perlman explained, "they can actually watch the kid playing, and chat with the kid, and so on." He clarified that, since the parent would presumably be in control of the child's account in the first place, a parent can limit spectating and chat to "friends."<br />
<br />
Finally, it's now possible for achievements to automatically post to a user's Facebook wall. OnLive will automatically record the ten seconds of gameplay up to that achievement, and post it as an HD "Brag Clip." "Facebook has been terrific to work on with this," Perlman said. "They actually made a couple of mods to their system -- because we're the first guys posting HD resolution videos nonstop over to Facebook. They're into it."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/24/onlive-adds-parental-controls-group-chat-facebook-achievement/">OnLive adds parental controls, group chat, Facebook achievement posting today</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 24 Aug 2011 14:07:00 EST. You know communication is of paramount importance while playing <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/portal-2/">Portal 2's</a></em> co-op mode and, to ameliorate that experience, Valve has upgraded the quality of Steam's voice technology. In place of that <em>busted old junk</em> is the SILK audio codec, the same one developed by (and used in) Skype -- those cats should know a little something about internet-based voice tech. While the older Steam Voice required a steady 15 kbps of bandwidth, SILK dynamically adjusts its bandwidth demands, from 8 to 30 kbps.<br />
<br />
During a brief test, we found the audio quality to be a notable improvement from the likes of Xbox Live, PSN, and even Steam Voice, but not quite "Skype-quality." Today's <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/news/5161/">Steam client update</a> brings the new codec, along with some other improvements, exactly one month before <em>Portal 2</em> will require you to use it. We're hoping Steam users test it out before then, so Valve can iron out any pulls in its SILK stockings before <em>Portal 2</em> day.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/22/steam-voice-chat-upgraded-with-skypes-silk-codec-just-in-time/">Steam Voice chat upgraded with Skype's SILK codec, just in time for Portal 2 co-op</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 22 Mar 2011 19:00:00 EST. Voice chat was one of several upcoming features touted by <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/onlive">OnLive</a> during <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/03/onlive-roadmap-achievements-voice-chat-and-more-inbound/">its panel</a> for potential publishing partners at GDC. Its rollout wasn't dated at the time -- merely "by the end of the year" -- but it turns out there wasn't much of a wait at all; it's available now.<br />
<br />
By enabling the voice chat beta option in the OnLive client, users of the service can access two chat channels: one for in-game yacking (open mic), the other for talking with other players while spectating in the Arena (push to talk). Corded and USB microphones are supported on PC and Mac; the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/onlive-microconsole">OnLive MicroConsole</a> adds support for Bluetooth headsets and VR goggles.<br />
<br />
Okay, we were kidding about the goggles -- but you have to admit it'd be pretty cool.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/11/onlive-in-game-voice-chat-now-on-and-live/">OnLive in-game voice chat now on and live</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 11 Mar 2011 02:00:00 EST. <em>Dead Nation</em> is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/30/dead-nation-review/#review">terrific</a>, but it has one shortcoming that many have considered a deal breaker: It lacks voice chat for online co-op play. That issue will be addressed in a new patch, to be deployed next Tuesday, March 7.<br />
<br />
The title update will not only add voice chat, but a few other features, including the abilities to save at checkpoints (which should make those challenging final levels a <em>little</em> easier) and to copy save files to back them up. In its post on <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/03/04/dead-nation-introduces-voice-chat-integration-new-development-diary/">PlayStation Blog</a>, Housemarque teases "further surprises" will be included, as well.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/04/dead-nation-patch-coming-next-week-adds-voice-chat-and-checkpoi/">Dead Nation patch coming next week, adds voice chat and checkpoint saves</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 04 Mar 2011 16:30:00 EST. The future features of cloud-based gaming service <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/onlive">OnLive</a> got a little less nebulous during the company's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gdc-2011">GDC 2011</a> panel. Speaking to developers, its VP of engineering, Joe Bentley, laid out a list of advancements gamers can expect by the end of the year.<br />
<br />
Among the new features being rolled out for game makers to implement are achievements (not detailed, but we're guessing these are derived from the console versions), voice chat, game invites and the ability to directly upload Brag Clips to YouTube.<br />
<br />
The latest version of the OnLive SDK will also enable developers to let their games support wireless controllers when played on mobile devices such as iPad, iPhone and Android-powered contraptions. (But not <em>actual</em> androids -- those guys <em>hate</em> it when you press their buttons.)<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/03/onlive-roadmap-achievements-voice-chat-and-more-inbound/">OnLive roadmap: Achievements, voice chat and more inbound</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 03 Mar 2011 08:45:00 EST. Saying that the developer "sincerely apologise that voice chat is not available in <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dead-nation">Dead Nation</a></em>'s online co-op mode," <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/housemarque">Housemarque</a> CEO and co-founder Ilari Kuittinen writes <a href="http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2010/12/02/voice-chat-coming-soon-to-dead-nation/">on the EU PlayStation Blog</a> that the zombie-filled, twin-stick shooter will be updated with the feature "soon," with the team "currently working intensely to introduce it as quickly as possible."<br />
<br />
While Kuittinen admits in his post that the lack of voice chat is "a major issue for some players," he goes on to say, "we think that releasing <em>Dead Nation</em> has been the right decision as the game is still great fun." We'd have to agree with that last part -- about it being <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/30/dead-nation-review/">great fun</a> -- but have to wonder how much shipping without such a integral element to online co-op was worth compared to missing out on holiday sales.<br type="_moz" /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/02/dead-nation-voice-chat-coming-soon/">Dead Nation voice chat coming 'soon'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 02 Dec 2010 14:25:00 EST. To that end, PDP has announced the $25 "Headbanger Headset."<br />
<br />
Conveniently, PDP is releasing the headset on November 9, timed with the release of the game. It'll be available in white, or in a "limited edition" <em>Call of Duty: Black Ops </em>version -- meaning: in black with the game's logo printed on it. That way, when someone asks you what you're playing, you can simply point at the side of your head, without the need for more conversation; which is good, because nobody would want to talk to you after that.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/12/pdp-introduces-headset-for-wii-call-of-duty-black-ops/">PDP introduces headset for Wii's Call of Duty: Black Ops</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 12 Oct 2010 07:00:00 EST. "Don't wake the house," the website says, touting the headset's ability to deliver game audio and voice chat through the headphones simultaneously. But <em>you</em> still have to talk for voice chat to work, and, barring some absurd <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/16/keep-your-joysound-to-yourself-with-new-microphone-peripheral/">Cone of Silence contraption</a>, that's still going to make noise.<br />
<br />
Regardless of the marketing angle, the headset itself looks pretty nice. It works with both the Xbox 360 and PS3 wirelessly, includes three inputs, and has a noise-canceling mic. All those features come at a price, however. If you want to whisper to your in-game pals while wearing one of these, it's going to run you $150.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/29/logitechs-new-xbox-ps3-headset-helps-you-keep-quiet/">Logitech's new Xbox/PS3 headset helps you keep quiet</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 29 Sep 2010 04:30:00 EST. On the same day as Apple <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/01/game-center-coming-to-iphone-next-week-in-ios-4-1/">announced the rollout</a> of its iOS <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/game-center">Game Center</a> platform for next week, Aurora Feint, creator of the OpenFeint social network for iPhone/iPod Touch, says it will enable real-time multiplayer gameplay between iOS and Android devices later this year with OpenFeint PlayTime. The new developer tools will also allow real-time voice chat during gameplay across both mobile platforms.<br />
<br />
"Traditionally, multiplayer technology has been accessible only to top tier developers. It's just too complicated and time consuming," Aurora Feint CEO Jason Citron said in the announcement. "So we invented PlayTime, which literally takes one day to integrate into a casual game."<br />
<br />
Features will include VoIP, lobbies and matchmaking for "casual games," expanding to incorporate team-based voice chat and 16 player game servers for "core" titles.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/01/aurora-feint-unveils-openfeint-with-cross-platform-mobile-multip/">Aurora Feint unveils OpenFeint with cross-platform mobile multiplayer and voice chat</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 01 Sep 2010 15:20:00 EST. An <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/apb"><em>APB</em></a> beta participant recently noticed a "<a href="http://www.massively.com/2010/06/24/apbs-voice-chat-feature-will-contain-advertisements/">VOIP Premium</a>" option in his account management page, which promises to keep ads off of the in-game chat program in exchange for real-life monies. Developer Realtime Worlds was <a href="http://na.apb.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21382">quick to clarify</a> the terms of these ads -- they'll only play when traveling between Districts, and only if the player hasn't heard an advertisement in the last three hours. Sadly, surreal broadcasts like the one presented in the above paragraph will never come to fruition.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/27/apb-in-game-voice-chat-will-be-ad-supported/">APB in-game voice chat will be ad-supported</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 27 Jun 2010 16:00:00 EST. Today's announcement of the European release of the game confirms that players will be able to coordinate with their hunting parties by yelling at their TVs.<br />
<br />
Not only will the Western releases of <em>Monster Hunter Tri</em> support the Wii Speak accessory, but it will be offered as part of a bundle in the European version. In addition to the standalone game and a Classic Controller Pro bundle, you'll be able to buy a pack containing <em>Monster Hunter Tri, </em>a black Classic Controller Pro, and a Wii Speak mic.<br />

If rumors circulating around <a href="http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=378612">NeoGAF</a> prove true, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Modern-Warfare-2/">Modern Warfare 2</a></em> developer Infinity Ward won't be allowing the use of the Xbox 360's party chat feature during ranked multiplayer playlists in its upcoming title. Since a distinction in the post is made between different styles of online matches (ranked and social), we presume the function will not be utilized throughout all of <em>Modern Warfare 2</em>'s online playlists.<br /><br />Speaking with Joystiq, Infinity Ward community manager <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Robert-Bowling/">Robert Bowling</a> said the company "can't comment on leaks," and was unable to confirm if the feature will, in fact, be disabled. "Players should reserve judgment until they get a chance to experience it for themselves on November 10 instead of viewing it out of context," Bowling added. Have an opinion on the matter? Sound off in the comments.<br /><br />

PlayStation Home will be patched today to version 1.04 in a "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/16/home-patch-fixes-login-issues-this-thursday/">first step</a>" effort towards resolving various connection issues users have been experiencing. While this is a good thing, the <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2008/12/17/playstation-home-system-maintenance/">PlayStation.Blog</a> also notes one side effect of this new patch: voice chat will be temporarily disabled. The removal of voice chat (for now) should alleviate the crushing bandwidth load on Sony's servers since the official "open beta" launch of the service.<br /><br />The blog recommends "to make use of the Wireless Keypad for PLAYSTATION 3 or any USB or Bluetooth-enabled keyboard for text chat and also the "phone friend" features to communicate within PlayStation Home."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/18/voice-chat-temporarily-disabled-in-home-1-04/">Voice chat temporarily disabled in Home 1.04</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 18 Dec 2008 10:30:00 EST. IGN's Craig Harris tested out the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/12/point-counterpoint-wiispeak-vs-ispeak/">WiiSpeak microphone</a> and voice chat functionality inside <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/20/animal-crossing-city-fashion/"><em>Animal Crossing</em></a> at Nintendo's San Francisco office. His experience seemed much smoother and friendlier than <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/18/e308-wiispeak-with-mario/">my own</a>, possibly as a result of improvements in the technology, a quieter environment, or a voice that is capable of normal human volume. Treehouse staffers told him that the voice chat has improved significantly since E3.<br /><br />Conversations came in clearly enough from multiple positions in the room, though Harris noted a drop in quality when his interlocutors in Nintendo's Redmond office drifted far away from the mic, which seems pretty obvious. He was able to converse in a normal speaking voice from his position "six to eight feet" away. However, with no option to turn the music down or off in <em>Animal Crossing,</em> the game tended to drown out the voice output.<br /><br />There was a mysterious "Use Headphones" option available in <em>Animal Crossing</em>, whose function is currently unknown. Harris speculates that it sends voice and game audio through separate audio channels, but maybe it just changes some preset audio settings to optimitze performance through tiny speakers. It's not as if you can plug a headset into the Wiimote or anything.<br /><br /><br /><br />

Microsoft has <a href="http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO1&amp;Sect2=HITOFF&amp;d=PALL&amp;p=1&amp;u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsrchnum.htm&amp;r=1&amp;f=G&amp;l=50&amp;s1=7,437,290.PN.&amp;OS=PN/7,437,290&amp;RS=PN/7,437,290">patented</a> an audio censoring technology with obvious application to Xbox Live. The patent covers real-time and batch analysis of audio data streams with the ability to render "undesired" words or phrases unintelligible or inaudible. Can you imagine if this power falls into the <em>wrong</em> hands?<br /><br />The process allegedly uses sophisticated comparisons of phonemes, the little building blocks of language. Our guess: What you thought was last year's harmless flu shot was actually a nanomachine injection, obviously. Just don't be surprised when you fire up Xbox Live a few months from now to the sound of tweens screaming: <em>La-li-lu-le-lo!</em><br /><br />[Via <a href="http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20081020-microsoft-gets-patent-for-real-time-f-bomb-bleeping.html">ars technica</a>; image credit: <a set="yes" linkindex="95" href="http://flickr.com/photos/trojanguy/2640736508/">Jeff the Trojan</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/20/microsoft-patents-la-li-lu-le-lo-tech/">Microsoft patents La-li-lu-le-lo tech</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 20 Oct 2008 18:28:00 EST. In non-games, certainly, the microphone at times <a href="http://dsfanboy.com/tag/week-of-french">has its uses</a> ... but what about in regular old-fashioned games? Sure, it's fun to yell "Hold it!" at times, but do you need to be able to do so? Would games that use the DS mic be just as good without it? <br /><br />Tied into this question is, of course, another one -- do you ever use voice chat in the games that support it? If you do, do you use a headset, or just the built-in mic?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/07/ds-daily-on-the-mic/">DS Daily: On the mic</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 07 Sep 2008 10:34:00 EST. High Voltage today revealed to <a href="http://wii.kombo.com/article.php?artid=12329">Kombo</a> that new fan-favorite FPS <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/19/fresh-art-from-the-conduit-draws-inevitable-comparisons/"><em>The Conduit</em></a> is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/10/e308-the-conduit-is-ready-for-a-show/">confirmed</a> for 16-player online multiplayer, but should <em>also</em> incorporate voice chat with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/15/e308-wii-speak-peripheral-coming/">WiiSpeak</a>. Good thing it's going to be sold <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/15/e308-wiispeak-to-be-sold-separately-for-29-99/">separately</a>. Of course, now that's got us wondering who else is going to use it, and for what. But as for chat in <em>The Conduit</em>, we hope to see more details soon.<br /><br /><br />[Thanks, Andy!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/16/e308-the-conduit-will-use-wiispeak/">E308: The Conduit will use WiiSpeak</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 16 Jul 2008 22:30:00 EST. When <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/15/e308-wii-speak-peripheral-coming/">the WiiSpeak peripheral</a> was unveiled for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/15/e308-animal-crossing-city-folk-confirmed/"><em>Animal Crossing: City Folk</em></a>, we were happy to finally get voice chat on our Wii. But, a curious slide at the conclusion of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/15/e308-live-reactions-from-the-nintendo-conference/">Nintendo's E3 keynote</a> showed the device has a very peculiar brick-like adapter that the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/usb">USB</a> end's cable plugs into. Now, we're assuming this is just a power brick, but you know what your school teachers told you about assuming!<br /><br />At least one thing is certain: the thing has enough cable to wrap around Nintendo HQ many times over.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/15/e308-wii-speak-brings-yet-another-power-brick-to-the-table/">E308: WiiSpeak brings yet another power brick to the table?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 15 Jul 2008 18:30:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/voice-chat/">Voice chat</a>, here we come. It looks like Reggie <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/14/online-voice-chat-a-possibility-for-the-wii/">wasn't just dangling carrots</a> when he talked about the feature coming to the Wii at some point.<br /><br />In Nintendo's expected announcement of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/15/e308-animal-crossing-city-folk-confirmed/"><em>Animal Crossing Wii</em></a>, the company added something <em>unexpected</em>: players will be able to use a peripheral known as WiiSpeak to communicate (non-locally, of course) during the game. <br /><br />The video demonstration briefly showed four players playing <em>Animal Crossing</em> on the Wii while "WiiSpeaking" to each other. We think it's about time that Nintendo got on the voice chat train, and we'll let you know more about the peripheral and how it works as details arise.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/15/e308-wii-speak-peripheral-coming/">E308: WiiSpeak peripheral coming</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 15 Jul 2008 12:40:00 EST. We thought it'd be best to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/11/smash-bros-brawl-has-voice-chat-its-called-xbox-live-psn/">reprint our advice</a> from the <em>Super Smash Bros. Brawl</em> release: if you want to chat up your friends while doing laps in <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/mario-kart-wii">Mario Kart Wii</a>, </em>here are five options we found -- harnessing the power of other consoles or a com-pu-ter -- for chatting up your friends. (Looking for a place to share your <em>Kart</em> friend codes? <strike>We'll set up a &uuml;ber-list post closer to tonight's US release.</strike> Here's a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/27/joystiqs-official-mario-kart-wii-friend-codes-uber-list-12-01a/">link to the &uuml;ber-list</a>.)<br />
<ul>
    <li><strong>Xbox Live</strong>: Or as we've come to know it -- <em>Kart</em> LIVE(R). Just set up private chat and off you go. <a href="http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2008/03/10/give-smash-bros-brawl-a-voice-with-xbox-live/">Got more than one friend</a>? Go into a <em>Halo 3</em> lobby (<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/03/microsoft-17-7-million-xbox-360s-and-8-1-million-copies-of-halo/">you do have <em>Halo 3</em></a>, right?).</li>
    <li><strong>PSN</strong>: Start up a new chat under the "friends" section of the XMB. Invite all the friends you want and wait for them to join. Works and sounds exceptional! USB and Bluetooth compatible.<br /> </li>
    <li><strong>Skype</strong>: Set up a conference call.</li>
    <li><strong>TeamSpeak</strong> or <strong>Ventrilo</strong>: Guilds, clans and other computer types know these services. Perfect for guildies racing together. </li>
    <li><strong>Nintendo DS</strong>: Use <em>Metroid Prime Hunters</em> or <em>Pok&eacute;mon Diamond</em> or <em>Pearl</em>. Warning: More inane codes required to pull this option off. There are also <a href="http://www.dsfanboy.com/tag/voip/">homebrew options</a>.</li>
</ul>
Of course, if none of these options are viable, might we suggest using a classic: <em>The phone</em>.<br />

It's never going to be any cheaper than this!" But this time, it's cheap <em>for real</em>. Amazon is running out of <em>the amount by which they could reduce the price.<br /><br /></em>Right now, the retailer is offering new Nintendo-brand DS headsets for just $5.68. You could get one for each ear, and carry on conversations with yourself as you play <em>Metroid Prime: Hunters</em> against yourself (although, yes, one would be on backwards)! Or you could save an extra one in case the first one gets all nasty from being in your ear! Or you could just not spend very much money and have a headset.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/14/ds-headset-reaches-exciting-new-levels-of-cheapness/">DS headset reaches exciting new levels of cheapness</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 14 Apr 2008 17:00:00 EST. <span style="float: left; margin-right: 10px; margin-top: 7px;"> <script> var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/nintendo/Text_Chat_not_actually_in_Mario_Cart_Wii'; </script> <script src="http://digg.com/api/diggthis.js"></script></span> After months of anticipation, with Nintendoholics craving any slight detail about online communication in <em>Mario Kart Wii</em>, here's how it all went down on a beautiful thing called the internet:<br /> <br /> First, we pondered amongst friends about the possibility of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/14/online-voice-chat-a-possibility-for-the-wii/">voice chat</a> in the upcoming racer. When we found out that this wasn't happening, it was no biggie -- while some of you, we're sure, screamed in anguish to the heavens, most of us (being the realists that we are) never actually expected such a feature in the first place.<br /> <br /> All hope was not lost, though. Praying to the Nintendo gods, we begged for <em>some way</em> of communicating with friends, so that our online matches would be deeper than normal matches against the computer. After all, what's the point of online play in the first place if it doesn't feel <span style="font-style: italic;">human</span>? Our pleas did not go unnoticed, though, and Nintendo <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/26/text-chat-confirmed-for-mario-kart-wii/">announced text chat support</a> for the game.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/28/egads-text-chat-not-actually-in-mario-kart/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Egads: Text chat not actually in Mario Kart</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/28/egads-text-chat-not-actually-in-mario-kart/">Egads: Text chat not actually in Mario Kart</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 28 Feb 2008 03:30:00 EST. <br />With 12-player races, weekly challenges, uploadable/downloadable ghosts, tournaments, and even a dedicated Mario Kart channel, online play in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/21/gdc08-mario-kart-wii-in-motion/"><em>Mario Kart Wii</em></a> sounds impressively <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/19/gdc08-nintendo-sheds-more-light-on-mario-kart-wii/"><em>complete</em></a>. Yet here's something you <em>won't</em> find when you first jump online: voice chat support. Rather, we'll all be communicating via text chat, with Nintendo's European arm confirming on its site: "You can create rooms for friends to join and even text chat while you're waiting for other racers."<br /><br />This is hardly surprising. Time and again, Nintendo has refused to include voice chat in its games, often citing the personal security and wellbeing of players. But surely the ability to chat to <em>registered friends</em> isn't asking too much? Any of you happen to think Nintendo is being overly cautious?<br /><br /><br />[Via <a href="http://uk.wii.ign.com/articles/855/855033p1.html">IGN</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/26/text-chat-confirmed-for-mario-kart-wii/">Text chat confirmed for Mario Kart Wii</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 26 Feb 2008 16:30:00 EST. While you already know tons of information about the upcoming <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/smash-bros-brawl"><span style="font-style: italic;">Smash Bros.</span></a> game, you should probably know what <em>not</em> to expect. Many of your hopes and dreams have given birth to compelling rumors, but it's time to put those rumors to rest (and never wake them again).<br /><br />Masahiro Sakurai managed to clear up some things in a recent interview with IGN -- things we may have already known, but didn't necessarily want to believe -- so check after the break to see what's <span style="font-style: italic;">not</span> in store for you this <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/15/super-smash-bros-brawl-delayed-until-march-9th/">March</a> (or <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/19/rumor-europeans-to-get-in-on-the-brawl-june-6th/">June</a>).<br /><br /><br /><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/21/a-few-things-you-wont-find-in-smash-bros-brawl/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>A few things you won't find in Smash Bros. He may have crushed our hopes for online features <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/14/virtual-console-online-features-are-for-suckers/">coming to the Virtual Console</a>, but in the process managed to dangle another carrot (a voice chat flavored carrot, that is) in front of our faces. To quote the man himself, "I would not be surprised to see that capability come to this system." He also stated that the Wii has the capability for voice chat, it was just a matter of making a peripheral.<br /><br />That's definitely better than some of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/27/nintendo-waves-away-hard-drive-rumors/">outright "no" statements</a> that we're so used to hearing.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/14/online-voice-chat-a-possibility-for-the-wii/">Online voice chat a possibility for the Wii</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 14 Dec 2007 15:35:00 EST. Dual-screen battles and "many advanced units" were cut, and unbalancing CO powers have been softened in favor of more strategic maneuvering.<br /><br />Gamers waiting for online support's inevitable addition can rejoice, however, as Wi-Fi battles and voice chat made the list of new features planned for <span style="font-style: italic;">Days of Ruin's</span> January 21st, 2008 release. A Map Center system of sharing, rating, and downloading online maps will also come included with the 170 scenarios on the cart.<br /><br />New troops like the Motorbike (lightly-armed vehicles that can capture territories), Flare (infantry capable of clearing fog-of-war from a distance), and Duster (air units equipped to fight off aerial and ground opponents) promise to add creative angles to past tactics. Check past the post break for more off-screen videos of those units in action.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.1up.com/do/previewPage?cId=3163656">Read</a> - 1UP's Advance Wars: DoR hands-on impressions<br /><a href="http://www.gamespot.com/ds/strategy/advancewarsdaysofruin/news.html?page=1&amp;sid=6181037">Read</a> - GameSpot's Advance Wars: DoR hands-on impressions<br /><a href="http://kotaku.com/gaming/nintendo-ds/advance-wars-days-of-ruin-hands-on-impressions-310918.php">Read</a> - Kotaku's Advance Wars: DoR hands-on impressions<br /><a href="http://media.ds.ign.com/media/949/949669/vids_1.html">Read</a> - IGN's Advance Wars: DoR off-screen videos<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/15/advance-wars-days-of-ruin-to-support-online-voice-chat-and-ma/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Advance Wars: Days of Ruin to support online, voice chat, and Map Center</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/15/advance-wars-days-of-ruin-to-support-online-voice-chat-and-ma/">Advance Wars: Days of Ruin to support online, voice chat, and Map Center</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 15 Oct 2007 16:40:00 EST.
