Saints Row 4 gets pimpin' August 20

Saints Row 4 has received an August 20 release date, publisher Deep Silver just announced. We are told that Saints Row 4 is not simply the Saints Row 3 "Enter the Dominatrix" standalone expansion in a different wrapper.

"That expansion was canceled and elements of it were rolled into Saints Row 4," a spokesperson for publisher Deep Silver tells Joystiq. "There will be a director's cut of Enter the Dominatrix released as DLC when SR4 comes out."

Saints Row 4 is being developed by Volition, which Deep Silver picked up along with the Saints Row IP during the THQ auction, and will launch August 20 in North America and August 23 everywhere else. The game is being developed for PC and "current-gen consoles." In a follow-up, we clarified that does not include Wii U.

Saints Row: The Third downloadable for $10 on Amazon today

Saints Row: The Third is a great game and for the rest of the day the downloadable PC version is only $10 on Amazon. Think fast if beating someone with a giant purple phallus is worth the entrance fee, because this deal will end at midnight Pacific time (Spoiler: it's totally worth it in every way conceivable).

If you find $10 too little to pay for so much game, there's plenty of DLC to purchase. Let your freak flag fly as a giant wiener! If you took that last line to mean something else than dressing up as a hot dog, we'd understand the potential confusion given the subject at hand.

THQ announced late last month its Saints Row: The Third standalone expansion, Enter the Dominatrix, intended for September, will now be incorporated into "The Next Great Sequel in the Saints Row Franchise" next year.

Saints Row franchise ships 11 million units, SR: The Third expansion due in Sept.

As part of today's year-end financials, THQ announced that the Saints Row franchise has shipped 11 million units globally. Speaking specifically to the latest installment, Saints Row: The Third, the company revealed it has shipped over 4.25 million units and that "the game has generated the highest digital revenue of any console title in the company's history."

That's not the conclusion of Saints Row for the year. Saints Row: The Third: Enter The Dominatrix is expected to launch this September. The game is a standalone product that does not require the third installment to play and started life as an April Fool's gag.

Saints Row: The Third gets 'freaking super powers' this fall in 'Enter the Dominatrix' expansion

In what is now becoming an annual tradition, one April Fools' joke is turning into a real-life thing. This time it's Saints Row: The Third's "Enter the Dominatrix" expansion. According to THQ, the new standalone content, taking place after the events of Saint's Row: The Third, will add "freaking super powers" for the price of $30.

Enter the Dominatrix arrives this fall, and it'll bring a whole new angle to the world of the Saints: "alien warlord Zinyak and his malevolent race" are apparently trying to grab up all the Earth's resources and/or women. It sounds like those freaking super powers will come in handy, eh? The dubious character seen above - named "Paul," innocuously enough - will also play some role, which remains to be seen. THQ says we'll hear more about Enter the Dominatrix this summer, so keep an ear flap on your gimp mask unzipped for now.

Update: THQ confirmed to us that Enter the Dominatrix is a standalone expansion and Season Pass owners will have to pay $30 like everyone else.

Update 2: To be extra extra clear, THQ explained to us that Enter the Dominatrix is a standalone "boxed retail product" that can be played without owning the original Saints Row: The Third disc. It will be available solely at retail (on disc) at launch this fall.

THQ moving away from 'kids licensed entertainment;' Saints Row: The Third ships 3.8 million

In the wake of a rumor that THQ had relinquished a publishing deal with Disney for a variety of children's properties, the ailing publisher released a statement this morning renewing its focus on "core game franchises" over "traditional kids' licensed video games." The company will also be focusing on "digital initiatives" going forward, though we're not sure how that'll be possible after the closure of THQ's digital studio in the UK.

The release specifically cites UFC, Darksiders, Company of Heroes, Insane, Saints Row, Warhammer 40K, and Patrice Desilets' currently-in-production project as "key franchises" for the company going forward, and promises more information will be offered on next thursday's financial call.

Alongside news of the realignment, THQ announced that 3.8 million copies of its latest release, Saints Row: The Third, have shipped to retail since launch in November 2011. The publisher expects lifetimes sales to reach between five and six million units, and believes that its season pass plan will help that play out.

3.8 million copies means there are quite a few large purple dildo bats out in the wild, folks, but will it be enough to keep THQ going after a major miss with the uDraw Tablet and a rough past few years? That remains to be seen.

You've had a full day to let the madness that is Saints Row: The Third sink in. Now what? Well you'll need a gun that shoots fish guts, obviously. Volition is delivering just that for $1.99 in the "Shark-o-Matic" gun, along with a separate $2.99 cheats pack for dirty, dirty cheaters.

Shacknews spotted both packs popping up -- alongside the expected $20 "season pass" -- in all three versions of the title as of this morning, kicking off what is said to be a whopping 40 weeks of additional content. Beyond the upcoming (free) CheapyD DLC, we know of three mission packs -- "Genkibowl VII," "Gangstas In Space," and "The Trouble With Clones" -- as well as the Nyte Blayde DLC pack that THQ has in store for SR3 players. Presumably we'll see more ... uh ... next week!

Saints Row The Third review: Walking the talk

"There's nothing like this game. In fact, I'm not sure there should be anything like this game. There's no concern for taste, no concern for morals -- it's all about the fun factor." That was THQ's VP of "Core Games," Danny Bilson, at a preview event for Saints Row: The Third just last month. Bilson has lead THQ's "hardcore games" push, attempting to reinvent the once-embattled publisher by reinvesting in "core" brands. That didn't work out so well, as we found out this past year.

I'm glad to say that, with Saints Row: The Third, Bilson's "Core Games" group is finally on solid ground. And in that respect, actually walking some of the big talk we've heard so much in the past few years. Beyond the now-infamous weaponized dildo and the inclusion of certifiable jams like Kanye West's "Power," there's so, so much to love and enjoy about Saints Row: The Third.

For starters, there's totally a hoverbike.

CheapAssGamer's CheapyD will be your homie (in Saints Row: The Third)

You folks know CheapyD, right? He's the owner and proprietor of gaming deals site CheapAssGamer, as well as a swell dude and friend of the site. He's also a big fan of the Saints Row series -- so much so, in fact, that he donated a heap of change to the Ashley Ames Foundation last summer in order to become a character in Saints Row: The Third.

What began as a bit role (a random pedestrian) turned into a full-on downloadable pack, adding Cheapy to the game as a "homie." Like in Saints Row 2, homies can be called to help out during missions or whenever you may need them. Cheapy says he recorded "approximately 150 lines" for the character, all done from his Tokyo, Japan apartment with direction over Skype from Volition devs.

He's not sure when the pack will be available (though he's been told it's coming out sooner than later), and it'll be free for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC players.

Saints Row: The Third exclusive PlayStation 3 content amounts to ... nothing, actually

After vaguely announcing "an exclusive mode on the PS3 utilizing [Saints Row: The Thirds's] signature weapon" back at E3, we never actually heard what that game mode would be. As it turns out, Volition and THQ apparenly never settled on one, and the exclusive content deal seemingly didn't pan out.

We discovered as much when retail copies of Saints Row: The Third arrived for review on both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 last week. After booting up each and looking around thoroughly, we can assure you that there's no content difference between the two versions. We contacted THQ, who today offered a "No comment" to our inquiry.

It stands to reason that the "exclusive mode" -- which apparently featured the game's "signature weapon" (a dildo bat, naturally) -- could have once been the game's take on wave-based co-op multiplayer: "Whored Mode." That mode is currently a part of the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC versions of the game. The publisher would neither confirm nor deny this suggestion.

Saints Row: The Third online co-op campaign and 'Whored Mode' gated with online pass

If you're considering postponing your purchase of Saints Row: The Third until sometime after next Tuesday in hopes of snagging a less expensive used copy, but also yearn for online cooperative mayhem, beware: an online pass is required before taking to the Information Superhighway.

Included in new copies of both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of Saints Row: The Third are one-time use codes for redemption upon initial launch of any online multiplayer, prompting users to otherwise purchase a pass for an undisclosed amount (we've asked THQ for clarification). Unfortunately, despite having both 360 and PS3 copies available for review at Joystiq, the 360 pass won't activate until launch and very few reviewers have PS3 code. Rest assured, we'll have our own review of Saints Row: The Third -- co-op or not -- by early next week.

Saints Row 'Initiation Station' pumps out over 1M characters, 24 'Gods'

THQ stated this morning that players have created over a million characters using the Saints Row Initiation Station. The free download, available on XBLM, PSN and Steam, allows future Saints to create a character for The Third, which launches next week.

The publisher stated that 1.2 million people have used the Initiation Station, with the most popular "nontraditional skin colors" being green, red and silver metallic -- no word yet if the latter group all had surfboards. There have also been 24 characters tagged as "God." Apt, since there is sure to be plenty of smiting.

Saints Row: The Third pre-orders surpass those of The Second

Saints Row: The Third has enjoyed four times the pre-orders of Saints Row 2, according to THQ CEO Brian Farrell, who made the announcement yesterday during the company's quarterly earnings call. That doesn't mean that Saints Row: The Third is expected to run away with quadruple the sales. THQ estimates the game will ship over 3 million units before the publisher's fiscal year ends in March 2012. By comparison, Saints Row 2 launched in October 2009 and sold 2.6 million by the end of the fiscal year.

While all this seriousness was going on, THQ sent out a trailer this morning celebrating the madness of Saints Row: The Third's pimps, gimps and "everything but the kitchen sink" mentality.

Saints Row: The Third PC system requirements revealed

Volition passed along the Saints Row: The Third PC system requirements to Destructoid and the recommended specs are kinda beefy. Not Crysis 2 at max settings beefy, but you'll need a GeForce GTX 400 series or better, or ATI Radeon HD5000 series or better graphics card, and a quad core processor under the hood -- you know, if you're looking to really soak in the visual symphony that is watching a man in a feathered hat kill a helpless citizen on the streets of Steelport with a gigantic dildo bat. The required specs are a bit more forgiving.

On top of that, Volition also posted about some specific PC features over on the Saints Row site, including "AMD Eyefinity support, DX9, DX10, and DX11 support, Crossfire enabled, SLI enabled, advanced depth of field, reflections, and ambient occlusion quality, and, of course, God Rays." Perhaps the platform's best feature, however, is the Saints Video Record Mode, which allows you to save specific gameplay clips and upload them to your preferred video hosting service. Or we guess you could just hold on to the clips as a personal, secret reminder of that one time you did a barrel roll in your Mercedes through a crowd of people. Entirely up to you.

If you figured Saints Row: The Third's pre-order bonus was going to be a real life "sex toy bat," don't feel bad ... so did we. Turns out the actual pre-order bonus is far tamer, but a whole lot crazier. The Professor Genki's Super Ethical Reality Climax "Hyper Ordinary Pre-Order Pack" includes in-game items like Prof Genki's Super Ballistic Man-a-pult truck, Prof. Genki's "Octopuss" cannon that fires baby octopi, and Prof. Genki's Leisure Stunt Suit with Genki mask. Admit it, you still want the giant, purple, rubber phallus.

The first 3,000 folks in North America who purchase the game through the THQ Online Store will receive the "Saints Row Season Pass" for free. The pass, "valued at more than $20," will grant access to three downloadable mission packs. The season pass is likely similar to those by Warner Bros. for Mortal Kombat and by Rockstar for LA Noire.

Saint's Row: The Third isn't going to tone down the series' trademark lunacy if Game Informer's screenshot gallery is any indication. Guns and explosions are present, but so is a "sex toy bat" (no word yet on the presence of a vibration setting).

The screens also reveal SRTT's costume and character customization screens, locales, vehicles and characters. Check 'em out over at GameInformer.com.

Developed by Volition Inc., The Third (video game in the popular franchise) sees you thriving as a celebrity in the persistently harassed town of Stillwater, now a haven for your gang's merchandise and infamy.

Your popularity draws the ire and attention of "The Syndicate," a criminal organization with tendrils in different parts of the world, and ultimately propels you into a new city that hosts "the most outlandish gameplay scenarios ever seen." THQ: Saint's Row for 3DS was already being made for Xbox Live Arcade

The Nintendo 3DS game list has a lot of predictable titles on it, but seeing Saint's Row on there was somewhat of a surprise. But it was a natural fit, as THQ VP Danny Bilson recently said. Not only was Nintendo enthusiastic about putting mature content on its new system, but "the interesting thing about the game is we were already making it. We were already making it as our Xbox Live game and in 3D also. It's designed for 3D already."

Wait, an Xbox Live title? The Saint's Row 3 universe is full of surprises -- THQ is planning a whole fleet of games to launch together, and among those is a downloadable XBL game that will unlock content in the full game (and vice versa). The 3DS will share content as well -- "all of our extension properties," says Bilson, "all connect and unlock things in each other."

Looks like the game's "new direction" is actually split a few different ways. All of these games are still due out sometime after March of next year.

Red Faction: Armageddon officially announced, co-op modes confirmed

THQ officially announced Red Faction: Armageddon this morning, following its TV trailer premiere last week. The latest red planet revolution will start March 2011 and will be experiencable (yes, that's a legitimeticle English word) on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. Beyond the single-player campaign, RF: Armageddon will also feature "multiplayer co-operative modes."

We're sure to learn more about Red Faction: Armageddon from THQ at E3 2010 next week. Stay tuned.
