<a href="http://joystiq.com/game/warhammer-40k-space-marine"><em><strong>Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine</strong></em></a><br />
This game was listed right after <em>Skyrim,</em> <em>Batman: Arkham City</em>, and <em>Portal 2</em> at number four in my top five of the year, and I think it deserves that spot, even over higher-profile contenders like <em>Gears of War 3</em> and <em>Modern Warfare 3</em>. The pitch-perfect pacing and incredible setting (I am now a die-hard Black Library reader -- start with the great <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Eisenhorn-Warhammer-40-000-Omnibus/dp/1844161560"><em>Eisenhorn</em> by Dan Abnett</a>) elevate this one from just another third-person action game to one of the best video games of the year.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/04/best-of-the-rest-mikes-picks-of-2011/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Best of the Rest: Mike's picks of 2011</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/04/best-of-the-rest-mikes-picks-of-2011/">Best of the Rest: Mike's picks of 2011</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 04 Jan 2012 21:30:00 EST. <strong><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/battlefield-3"><em>Battlefield 3</em></a></strong><br />
I love <em>Battlefield 3</em>. I love it almost as much as it seems to hate its players.<br />
<br />
At least, that's the way it feels sometimes, trying to get into a game, trying to get correctly squaded up, trying to find a server with room, having to use a server browser on consoles in 2011, downloading 2 GIGABYTE patches ... y u no luv me, <em>BF3</em>?<br />
<br />
But when it does love me, it loves me so well ... and there I go, into that cycle of abuse again.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/03/best-of-the-rest-arthurs-picks-of-2011/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Best of the Rest: Arthur's picks of 2011</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/03/best-of-the-rest-arthurs-picks-of-2011/">Best of the Rest: Arthur's picks of 2011</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 03 Jan 2012 23:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dead-space-2"><em><strong>Dead Space 2</strong></em></a><br />
I am a passionate man. When <em>Dead Space 2</em> was overlooked by several of my fellow editors, preventing it from attaining a rightful place in our top ten, I briefly contemplated a multi-city tour. The plan was simple: ring their doorbell, smack them across the face, cross their name off a list and move on to the next deserving victim. My main reason <em>Dead Space 2</em> deserved a spot in our top ten:<br />
<br />
At times, <em>I forgot to breathe</em>.<br />
<br />
<em>Dead Space 2</em> was a game of tension and release. I found myself gasping for air after several scenes, so focused on whatever new necromorph horror was trying to splay me that the part of my brain regulating natural respiration was overridden by the section screaming, "SHOOT IT! SHOOT IT WITH SO MUCH QUICKNESS AND RUN!"<br />
<br />
For the sake of levity, if I had it my way, there would have been several moments where protagonist Isaac Clarke pulled out <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Handi-Snacks">Handi-Snacks</a>, lifted his visor and pouted about whatever danger he'd face beyond the next airlock.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/02/best-of-the-rest-alexanders-picks-of-2011/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Best of the Rest: Alexander's picks of 2011</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/02/best-of-the-rest-alexanders-picks-of-2011/">Best of the Rest: Alexander's picks of 2011</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 02 Jan 2012 22:30:00 EST. <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/warhammer-40k-space-marine">Warhammer 40K: Space Marine</a></em> will receive a "big metal surprise" in January, according to the game's official <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/SpaceMarine/status/150263197973225472">Twitter</a> feed. <a href="http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2011/12/23/relic-teases-possible-dreadnought-for-space-marine.aspx">Game Informer</a> took note of the tweet and its accompanying picture of a space marine (SPACE MARINE!) serving the eternal will of The Emperor against a Dreadnought.<br />
<br />
As fans of the <em>Warhammer 40K</em> universe and Relic's <em>Dawn of War</em> RTS know, the <a href="http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Dreadnought">Dreadnought</a> is actually a battle sarcophagus, where the barely living body of an invaluable warrior is entombed to live out existence in the massive armed mech.<br />
<br />
Relic gave no indication of how the Dreadnought will be added to the game, but expect some kind of DLC announcement come January.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/24/space-marine-twitter-teases-dreadnought/">Space Marine Twitter teases Dreadnought</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 24 Dec 2011 08:00:00 EST. Fall in, marines! As you know, the war on the Orks goes well -- we're gigantic, chainsword-wielding monstrosities and those green bastards slice up <em>nice</em>. As such, the Emperor has seen fit to bolster <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/25/space-marines-free-exterminatus-co-op-mode-now-available/">our Exterminatus efforts</a> with a new mode, called Chaos Unleashed. The Emperor's dispatch promises "new boss rounds, new co-op arenas and new enemy units like the Imperial Sanctioned Psyker" in December.<br />
<br />
But here's the catch: Our war is costly, and the Emperor is asking every marine to come up with, uh -- wait, $10 or 800 Microsoft Points? This has to be a typo, because out here in space we've never heard of these things. We'll have to get back to you on that one.<br />
<br />
Chaos Unleashed also brings with it three new warzone operations across Habs Ablaze, Station Tertius and Aquila Canyon, plus a -- wait, this has to be a typo, too. A new "Capture the Flag mode" for multiplayer available to all players outside of Chaos Unleashed? Frankly, we're starting to doubt the Emperor is of sound mind.<br />
<br />
[Thanks, Copybass.]<br />

<a href="http://investor.thq.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=96376&amp;p=irol-newsArticle&amp;ID=1625257&amp;highlight">THQ has announced</a> financial figures for the second quarter (July through September) of its 2012 fiscal year. Despite having a release schedule that any company would consider <em>light</em>, it managed to bring in net sales of $146 million. That's a pretty significant increase over the $77.1 million it brought in during the same period last year. Of course, its losses nearly doubled year-over-year as well. Easy come, easy go.<br />
<br />
The top performer was <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/warhammer-40k-space-marine"><em>Warhammer 40K: Space Marine</em></a>, which managed to sell 1.2 million units across all platforms during the quarter, a little under half of which were sold in North America. Brian Farrell, THQ's CEO, explained during a conference call that older catalog titles also sold well, specifically mentioning <em>Saints Row 2</em>. We guess people are eager to get back into the swing of (blowing up) things.<br />
<br />
Farrell added, "We are encouraged that our second quarter performance exceeded our expectations, particularly in a quarter with a light release schedule." We imagine he'll be pretty darn encouraged next quarter, which sees the release of the ridiculous <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/saints-row-the-third"><em>Saints Row: The Third</em></a>, and the somehow even more ridiculous <em>WWE '12</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/02/thqs-sales-exceeded-expectations-in-q2-space-marine-sold-1-2/">THQ's sales 'exceeded expectations' in Q2, Space Marine sold 1.2 million</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 02 Nov 2011 17:15:00 EST. Joystiq got a chance to chat with THQ's Executive Vice President of Core Games, Danny Bilson, at a <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/saints-row-3"><em>Saints Row: The Third</em></a> event earlier this week. He spoke to us about <em>Space Marine</em>'s chances for a sequel, and what he plans for THQ this holiday and beyond.<br />
<br />
Bilson says <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/warhammer-40k-space-marine"><em>Warhammer 40K: Space Marine</em></a> is "doing okay," and that "<em>40K</em> fans in particular" were pleased. "It's a really good game, it's doing pretty well. In this world, honestly, you have to do exceptionally well to make any money, because the games are so expensive." Bilson hopes the game keeps selling, and expects the impending release of co-op DLC and "more DLC after that" to help maintain its momentum.<br />
<br />
He balks at promising a sequel, however, saying that the <em>Space Marine</em> gameplay may bump up against THQ's planned <em>Warhammer 40K</em> MMO, <em>Dark Millennium</em>, in 2013. "We've already announced the Imperium in the MMO as a class you can play," he says, "and if you combine that it's very active, as opposed to the more turn-based stuff. I'm not sure there's room for <em>Space Marine</em>." But there is more coming for you, battle brothers: "We are heavily invested in the 40K universe, so there's more stuff coming in the 40K universe, absolutely. We extended the deal for quite a while."<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/14/thqs-bilson-not-sure-theres-room-for-space-marine-sequel-alo/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>THQ's Bilson 'not sure there's room' for Space Marine sequel alongside MMO</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/14/thqs-bilson-not-sure-theres-room-for-space-marine-sequel-alo/">THQ's Bilson 'not sure there's room' for Space Marine sequel alongside MMO</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 14 Oct 2011 08:15:00 EST. "Was it our best work?" <em>Warhammer 40K: Space Marine</em> producer Andy Lang asked <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-10-12-relic-post-mortems-space-marine">Eurogamer</a>. "It was our best console work."<br />
<br />
Relic, best known for PC real-time strategy games like <em>Company of Heroes</em> and <em>Dawn of War</em>, took a risk by attacking the third-person shooter genre so late in the console cycle. We <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/06/warhammer-40k-space-marine-review/#review">enjoyed</a> <em>Space Marine</em>, noting it showed Relic's "expertise can extend far past the RTS genre they've already conquered," but <a href="http://www.metacritic.com/game/xbox-360/warhammer-40000-space-marine">critical reception has been varied</a>.<br />
<br />
<p>
	"I'm pretty humble; I don't look at [criticism] and get all upset. I thought most of the reviews were fairly on the mark with what they had to say," Lang admitted. "The character design does get a bit repetitive and certain parts of it, just how the game plays - we didn't have time to really polish that stuff to where we wanted to get to. There wasn't anything that was oh-my-god shocking in the game."<br />

	<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/warhammer-40k-space-marine"><em>Warhammer 40K: Space Marine</em></a>'s free "Exterminatus" co-op DLC will kill in service to the Emperor on October 25, according to <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-10-07-space-marine-co-op-dlc-release-date">Eurogamer</a>. The <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/02/space-marine-gets-exterminatus-co-op-dlc-in-october-free-for/">DLC includes two, four-player scenarios</a> that pit the Space Marines (or "SPACE MARINES!" as is incessantly shouted throughout the whole game) against Orks and Chaos. Relic is reportedly working on more content for the game, which will be released as free and premium DLC sometime in the future -- certainly sometime before 40K.</div>

Relic is better known for using the <em>Warhammer 40K</em> universe in its <em>Dawn of War</em> real-time strategy series.<em> Space Marine</em>, Relic's new, more action-oriented take, fittingly launched into the hell of end-of-year game retail and is apparently surviving. Zombie RPG <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/dead-island"><em>Dead Island</em></a> continues feasting on money and tourists in its second week atop the UK all formats sales chart. <a href="http://www.chart-track.co.uk/?i=1176&amp;s=1111">Chart-Track</a> notes (to the surprise of no one) that Deep Silver's two weeks of <em>Dead Island</em> sales have eclipsed the lifetime sales of any other title in the publisher's catalog. That includes and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/naild" style="font-style: italic; ">Nail'd</a> and <em>Prison Break: The Conspiracy</em>.<br />
<br />
Another unexpected development on the charts: <em>Warhammer 40K Space Marine</em> maintained its second place position again this past week. Despite a 52 percent drops in sales, the Emperor's fist kept the aliens of <em>Resistance 3</em> in third.<br />
<br />
The only "new" title to break the Top 40 last week was <em>God of War Collection Volume 2,</em> which bludgeoned everything below the 35th spot. Price promotions moved <em>Red Faction: Armageddon</em> up 246 percent into 11th, while Kinect's <em>Rise of Nightmares</em> had a better second week, running up from 37th place to 18th.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/19/dead-island-warhammer-40k-space-marine-continue-fight-atop-uk/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Dead Island, Warhammer 40K: Space Marine continue fight atop UK charts</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/19/dead-island-warhammer-40k-space-marine-continue-fight-atop-uk/">Dead Island, Warhammer 40K: Space Marine continue fight atop UK charts</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 19 Sep 2011 09:30:00 EST. Love it or leave it zombie RPG <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/dead-island"><em>Dead Island</em></a> has consumed the top of the UK sales chart in its debut week. Another premiere expounded righteous force for the Emperor: <em>Warhammer 40K: Space Marine</em>. <a href="http://www.chart-track.co.uk/?i=1176&amp;s=1111">Chart-Track</a> notes the PC sales for <em>Space Marine</em> were actually higher than <em>Dead Island</em>, which it believes is due to the former not being available on UK's Steam at launch.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://joystiq.com/game/driver-san-francisco"><em>Driver: San Francisco</em></a> shifted down into third in its second week on the charts, while <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/resistance-3"><em>Resistance 3 </em></a>invaded the UK, nabbing fourth place in its first week available. <em>Deus Ex: Human Revolution</em>, currently in fifth, is doing its part to suppress the <em>Zumba Fitness</em> conspiracy, by keeping the dance fitness simulator in sixth.<br />
<br />
Other notable premieres were 3DS's <em>Star Fox 64 3D</em> and Kinect's <em>Rise of Nightmares</em> in ninth and a brisk 37th place, respectively. Check out the drying paint of a fresh UK top ten after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/12/dead-island-shambles-up-uk-charts-space-marine-drops-in-second/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Dead Island shambles up UK charts, Space Marine drops in second</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/12/dead-island-shambles-up-uk-charts-space-marine-drops-in-second/">Dead Island shambles up UK charts, Space Marine drops in second</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 12 Sep 2011 09:15:00 EST. If you've finished the game, you'll know that Relic Entertainment's recently released <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/warhammer-40k-space-marine"><em>Warhammer 40000: Space Marine</em></a> is dedicated to developer Brian Wood, who passed away <a href="http://blogs.seattleweekly.com/dailyweekly/2010/09/brian_wood_heroic_video_game_d.php">in a car accident last year</a> (but not before turning the car so that his pregnant wife would survive the wreck). This week happens to mark the one year anniversary of Wood's death, and to honor him, Relic has <a href="http://www.ebay.com/sch/relicentertainment/m.html?_trksid=p4340.l2562">started up a set of eBay auctions</a> featuring a number of <em>Space Marine</em> and Relic-related goodies, from signed posters and game copies to even consoles and other promotional items.<br />
<br />
Most of the auctions end in about four days on Sunday, and plenty of the items only have a few bids so far. All of the money will go to setting up a memorial bench for Wood in Vancouver, where his wife and now 9-month old daughter live. The company has also <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/09/brian-wood-memorial-trust-accepting-donations/">set up a memorial trust</a> in his honor, as well as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/28/relic-establishes-brian-wood-memorial-game-design-internship/">an in-company internship</a>. This auction is a great way to show your support for Wood's legacy, and get some one-of-a-kind Relic gear to boot.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/08/relic-entertainment-holds-charity-auction-to-mark-developer-bria/">Relic Entertainment holds charity auction to mark developer Brian Wood's death</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 08 Sep 2011 22:30:00 EST. Games Workshop's <em>Warhammer</em> universe hasn't really gotten the respect in the video game realm that it deserves. Blizzard liberally borrowed from the line for both its <em>StarCraft </em>and <em>WarCraft</em> universes, and those have obviously been quite successful among the mouse-and-keyboard crowd. And even on consoles, the concept of a "space marine" is almost cliched at this point; almost every major developer has churned out a third-person shooter featuring a big bad dude with a bunch of big, bad guns.<br />
<br />
But Warhammer (and this, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warhammer_40,000">its sci-fi, year 40,000 variant</a>) really is the grandfather of the genre, the prototype for all of those gruff space warriors and the green-skinned and slimy hordes they battle against. Marcus Fenix and his ilk may have grabbed some headlines and sold some games, but it's about time the Ultramarines got some credit for being the original killing machines and wearers of huge shoulder plates.<br />
<br />
And thanks to the talented designers at Relic Entertainment and their pitch-perfect use of the Warhammer universe in <a href="http://joysiq.com/game/warhammer-40k-space-marine"><em>Warhammer 40K: Space Marine</em></a>, they deserve to get that credit.<br />

<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/warhammer-40k-space-marine"><em>Warhammer 40K: Space Marine</em></a> may be pushing its meaty shoulders into retail this coming week, but its co-op mode won't arrive until "early October" says THQ. The mode, with the Latin-derived name "Exterminatus," will be made free as a download to "all players" according to THQ's release.<br />
<br />
Exterminatus contains two separate "scenarios" in which four-player groups can maneuver their bulky trio of classes around, chainsawing through everything in their path. Global leaderboards are also included, posing "dynamic challenges" to players and supporting additional "score modifiers" (read: Skulls).<br />
<br />
Some confusion was raised over the game's co-op <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/09/thq-confirms-co-op-for-space-marine-but-may-be-dlc/">back in August</a> when a GameStop advert pinned the co-op mode exclusively to GameStop pre-orders, but today's announcement clearly refutes that information.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/warhammer-40-000-space-marine-co-op-mode/">Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine (Co-op Mode)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/warhammer-40-000-space-marine-co-op-mode/#4416803"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/09/spacemarinecoopshot1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/warhammer-40-000-space-marine-co-op-mode/#4416804"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/09/spacemarinecoopshot2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/warhammer-40-000-space-marine-co-op-mode/#4416805"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/09/spacemarinecoopshot3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/warhammer-40-000-space-marine-co-op-mode/#4416806"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/09/spacemarinecoopshot4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/02/space-marine-gets-exterminatus-co-op-dlc-in-october-free-for/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Space Marine gets 'Exterminatus' co-op DLC in October, free for everyone</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/02/space-marine-gets-exterminatus-co-op-dlc-in-october-free-for/">Space Marine gets 'Exterminatus' co-op DLC in October, free for everyone</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 02 Sep 2011 10:00:00 EST. Sticks and giant hockey players may break some bones, sure, but chainswords will rip flesh asunder. Today's high-profile and violent demo additions to the Xbox Live marketplace include hockey simulator <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/nhl-12"><em>NHL 12</em></a> and bulked-up shooter <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/warhammer-40k-space-marine/"><em>Warhammer 40K: Space Marine</em></a>.<br />
<br />
Don't forget, if you play the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/18/warhammer-40k-kill-team-review/">competently created</a> downloadable game, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/warhammer-40k-kill-team">Warhammer 40K: Kill Team</a></em>, you'll unlock the "Power Sword" when <em>Space Marine</em> starts its orbital assault on September 6.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/warhammer-40-000-space-marine/">Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/warhammer-40-000-space-marine/#4164242"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/05/warpstorm_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/warhammer-40-000-space-marine/#4164243"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/05/chaoslord_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/warhammer-40-000-space-marine/#4164244"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/05/deathfromabove_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/warhammer-40-000-space-marine/#4164245"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/05/mira_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/warhammer-40-000-space-marine/#4164247"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/05/titan_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/23/nhl-12-warhammer-40k-space-marine-demos-assault-xbox-live/">NHL 12, Warhammer 40K: Space Marine demos assault Xbox Live</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 23 Aug 2011 21:30:00 EST. <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/warhammer-40k-space-marine"><em>Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine</em></a> will receive a demo later this month. THQ has announced that a demo for the upcoming Ork-slayer will arrive on PC and Xbox 360 on August 22. The PlayStation 3 version of the demo will arrive the following day, August 23.<br />
<br />
The single-player demo will feature two levels, including a battle outside a munitions factory and "a taste of the exhilarating Jump Pack sequences." The press release also notes that players who pre-order <em>Space Marine</em> on Steam will receive early access to the title during the weekend of August 18 (not to mention a free copy of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/27/become-a-space-wolf-with-warhammer-40k-space-marines-pre-order/">Darksiders</a></em>). During the promotion, Steam will be offering a sale on bundled <em>Warhammer 40,000</em> titles.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/16/space-marine-single-player-demo-set-for-this-month/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Space Marine single-player demo set for this month</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/16/space-marine-single-player-demo-set-for-this-month/">Space Marine single-player demo set for this month</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 16 Aug 2011 00:30:00 EST. Apparently, Relic's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/warhammer-40k-space-marine"><em>Space Marine</em></a> will "use action and awesome, awe-inspiring moments to really drive people through the narrative." Translated into English, we think that means: it's got some cool stuff in it. Good to know!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/12/space-marine-dev-diary-aims-to-disect-the-blockbuster/">Space Marine dev diary aims to disect the blockbuster</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 12 Aug 2011 00:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/09/thq-confirms-co-op-for-space-marine-but-may-be-dlc/"><img alt="Warhammer 40k: Space Marine will offer online co-op, but how?" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/07/wh40ksmclasses.jpg" style="width: 530px; height: 249px; border-width: 0px; border-style: solid; margin: 0px;" /></a></div>
We've seen <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/warhammer-40k-space-marine"><em>Warhammer 40k: Space Marine</em></a> a few times now, but the one mode we still haven't heard about is a possible co-op mode. That feature appears to have been outed, however, in <a href="http://www.co-optimus.com/article/6518/space-marine-co-op-details-leaked-by-gamestop.html">a Gamestop promotion that appeared last week</a>. Promised in a pre-order bonus, among a few other things, is a "5-player co-op: Bonus FREE game mode (Day 30 DLC)." The problem is, the game's fanbase isn't quite sure how to take that - does that mean you get co-op only as a DLC mode that's paid for everyone but Gamestop pre-orders, or is it free for everyone? "8 vs 8 online MP" is also listed on the card, and we already know <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/20/warhammer-40k-space-marine-multiplayer-preview/">that's included on the game disc</a>.<br />
<br />
A community manager on the game's official forums <a href="http://www.shacknews.com/article/69656/space-marine-co-op-to-be-added-after-launch">posted over the weekend</a> in what appeared to be an attempt to clarify things that the co-op mode had indeed been delayed by 30 days post-launch, but that it would be free to those who purchased the game "brand new." That suggests <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/20/thq-introduces-its-own-online-pass-in-ufc-2010/">an online pass-style setup</a>, not a new trick for THQ. But that forum post was itself deleted (<a href="http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:oLap7VRf_0MJ:www.spacemarine.com/forums/topic/2489+http://www.spacemarine.com/forums/topic/2489&amp;cd=1&amp;hl=en&amp;ct=clnk&amp;gl=us&amp;source=www.google.com">cache here</a>), suggesting that it too wasn't the real story.<br />
<br />
So we went to ask THQ ourselves, and the official word from the company to Joystiq is this: "<em>Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine</em> will have co-op. We are looking forward to announcing more details later this month!" There you go. Co-op confirmed. As to how it will be implemented, we'll all have to wait and find out.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/09/thq-confirms-co-op-for-space-marine-but-may-be-dlc/">THQ confirms co-op for Space Marine, but may be DLC</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 09 Aug 2011 21:00:00 EST. Despite being classified as a comic book convention, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Comic-Con">Comic-Con</a> continues to hemorrhage gaming news, the latest interesting tidbit being this <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/warhammer-40k-space-marine"><em>Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine</em></a> gameplay video. Speaking with <a href="http://comic-con.gamespot.com/video/6324921/warhammer-40000-space-marine-comic-con-2011-demo">Gamespot</a>, THQ's Daniel Isaac outlines how Captain Titus' jump-pack and Thunder Hammer will allow players to effortlessly murder tens of thousands of severely out-classed and under-prepared orcs. Isaac also details the title's class-based multiplayer, which we <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/20/warhammer-40k-space-marine-multiplayer-preview/">previewed</a> last week, as well as <em>Space Marine</em>'s one-billion possible armor customizations.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/24/comic-con-video-extravaganza-continues-with-warhammer-40k-space/">Comic-Con video extravaganza continues with Warhammer 40K: Space Marine</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 24 Jul 2011 17:30:00 EST. We've seen THQ's <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/warhammer-40k-space-marine"><em>Warhammer 40K: Space Marine</em></a> a few times now, and it's shaping up pretty well as a sort of "Gears of Warhammer 40K." The Space Marines are a huge part of Games Workshop's Warhammer 40K lore, and Relic Games has placed them into a third-person shooter, skillfully combining run-and-gun and melee combat with lots and lots of Ork killing.<br />
<br />
Last week, THQ finally showed off the game's multiplayer at an event in Santa Monica, and what we got to see there was an interesting, if a little shallow, class-based shooter. It features some really careful class balancing, and an armor customization system, fittingly called "The Customizer," that should make even the most ardent of Warhammer 40K fans happy.<br />

	"We believe Apple is going to be there, Google is going to be there," THQ head honcho Brian Farrell told an audience at today's GamesBeat conference in San Francisco. He isn't talking about this weekend's killer tech company pool party (you should come!); instead, he's talking about the next generation of game consoles. "Our view is that the next generation of consoles, if there are consoles, are going to be less about technology and more about service orientation of the gamer." Take that, technology!<br />
	<br />
	Apple and Google are already changing the video gaming landscape and their Apple TV and Google TV platforms have the potential to be even bigger game-changers. Though as bullish as he is on Apple and Google's mobile offerings, Farrell still sees a future for the PlayStation Vita and 3DS. "The dedicated handheld market is going to find an audience, but it isn't going to be as broad because of the competition from other operating systems. What the market is telling us, is consumers want a very quickly consumable mobile experience; it doesn't necessarily have to be deep."<br />
	<br />
	While THQ is still intent on making expensive plays in the AAA console gaming space, like September's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/warhammer-40k-space-marine"><em>Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine</em></a> and November's <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/saints-row-the-third">Saint's Row The Third</a></em>, it's also working on "better bite-size games," according to GamesBeat, "rather than massive titles with awesome graphics on hand-held consoles like Sony's PlayStation Vita or the Nintendo 3DS."<br />
	<br />
	With <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/12/ea-to-acquire-popcap-games-for-750-million//">EA plunking down some serious cash for PopCap</a>, one of iOS's top-earning developers, we're seeing more publishers focus on the new mobile space. Now the question is whether or not gamers have enough time and money to support that many competing mobile platforms. <small>Above: <em>Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War II</em></small></div>
We haven't even made the acquaintance of the beefy battlers in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/warhammer-40k-space-marine"><em>Warhammer 40K: Space Marine</em></a> yet and our friends in Australia are already getting a peek at the franchise's future. The Australian Classification Board just awarded a release called <em>Warhammer 40K: Kill Team</em> with an "M", presumably since it features a team that kills things.<br />
<br />
According to <a href="http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Kill-team">the 40K wiki</a>, a kill-team is "a small group of Space Marines, usually no less than five Astartes but no more than a reinforced squad in size, that are tasked with carrying out a specific objective, such as the destruction of a particularly dangerous or strategically important individual, hence the name."<br />
<br />
The title's being developed by THQ Digital Studios UK, the same house behind <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/red-faction-battlegrounds">Red Faction: Battlegrounds</a></em>, which leads us to believe we're talking about some sort of downloadable title. We were about to say it also leads us to believe it won't be very good, but who knows? Maybe the studio was working so hard on <em>Kill Team</em> that it forgot to make <em>Battlegrounds</em> good? Today <em>is</em> a holiday after all, the least we can do is to be generous.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/30/warhammer-40k-kill-team-rated-in-australia/">'Warhammer 40K: Kill Team' rated in Australia</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 30 May 2011 11:15:00 EST. Though it's possible you've been offered the opportunity to dress like a space wolf at some other point today, we were quite excited to be extended such a chance by the newly announced pre-order bonuses for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/warhammer-40k-space-marine"><em>Warhammer 40K: Space Marine</em></a>. Folks pre-ordering the forthcoming third-person space shooter at GameStop will get the hilariously named armor, as well as the "black templar chapter armor." A variety of other bonuses are available from several other retailers, detailed below the break.<br />
<br />
Additionally, a "limited run" of the collector's edition seen above will be offered at retailers, going for $79.99 on PC and $89.99 on 360/PS3. Beyond the faux "Purity Seal" and artbook, <em>Space Marine</em>'s collector's edition comes bundled in a box (shaped like an old book!) with the soundtrack, a pack of "character information cards" and the game itself.<br />
<br />
Additionally, among the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/25/onlives-space-marine-pre-order-includes-free-microconsole-and-d/">other ways</a> you can currently get <em>Darksiders</em> for free, PC pre-orders at most retailers -- except THQ's own store, it seems -- will snag a copy of that alongside <em>Space Marine</em>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/27/become-a-space-wolf-with-warhammer-40k-space-marines-pre-order/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Become a space wolf with Warhammer 40K: Space Marine's pre-order bonuses</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/27/become-a-space-wolf-with-warhammer-40k-space-marines-pre-order/">Become a space wolf with Warhammer 40K: Space Marine's pre-order bonuses</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 27 May 2011 01:00:00 EST. Yet again, OnLive and THQ have hooked up to give you a free <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/18/onlive-microconsole-review/">MicroConsole</a>. And, as avowed free stuff enthusiasts, we greet the mental image of a mighty mountain of MicroConsoles approvingly.<br />
<br />
The latest offer is for <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/warhammer-40k-space-marine">Warhammer 40K: Space Marine</a>.</em> If you pre-order the "Full PlayPass" of the streaming game between now and August 22, you'll get a free MicroConsole -- or, if (as is becoming <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/thq,onlive,pre-order/">ever more likely</a>) you already have one, you can choose a free game instead (by pre-ordering by May 31). You'll also get $5 off the regular $50 price, and a free copy of <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/darksiders"><em>Darksiders</em></a>.<br />
<br />
We're sure any OnLive execs you meet would also personally hug you, though that bonus isn't explicitly documented.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/25/onlives-space-marine-pre-order-includes-free-microconsole-and-d/">OnLive's Space Marine pre-order includes free MicroConsole and Darksiders</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 25 May 2011 22:00:00 EST. Make no mistake, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/warhammer-40k-space-marine"><em>Warhammer 40K: Space Marine</em></a> is all about a man's quest to turn his enemies into a bloody puree (and his name ain't even <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/god-of-war-3">Kratos</a>). If our recent <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/20/warhammer-40k-space-marine-preview/">preview</a> didn't impress this fact upon you, check out this new, most violent video.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/25/space-marine-combat-system-vid-goes-into-blood-frenzy/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Space Marine combat system vid goes into blood frenzy</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/25/space-marine-combat-system-vid-goes-into-blood-frenzy/">Space Marine combat system vid goes into blood frenzy</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 25 May 2011 19:30:00 EST. THQ and Games Workshop are happy with the sweet war they're making together and have agreed to extend their <em>Warhammer 40,000</em> license agreement. The "multi-year" extension gives THQ exclusive rights to publish games based on the franchise for all platforms and demographics (core, social and mobile).<br />

THQ reiterated that it's currently working on two new IPs based in the futuristic fantasy universe: <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/warhammer-40k-space-marine/">Warhammer 40K: Space Marine</a></em>, a third-person shooter, is expected "later this year" (Note: the company previously stated "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/20/warhammer-40k-space-marine-preview/">August</a>"); and then there's the MMO, <em>Warhammer 40K: Dark Millennium</em>, which is expected ... sometime <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/22/thq-puts-devils-third-in-2012-announces-ufc-trainer/">in the future</a></em>. We hope it won't become a contemporary piece for the year 40,000.<br />
<br />
We've followed up with THQ for a more detailed definition of "multi-year." We figure it's longer than a year but shorter than the amount of time one can safely store an Ork's head in a breadbox.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/26/thq-extends-warhammer-40k-licensing-deal/">THQ extends Warhammer 40K licensing deal</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 26 Apr 2011 19:42:00 EST. Imagine yourself as seven-foot-tall monstrosity of a human being (it helps if you already are one), locked inside an even larger but <em>metallic</em> walking monstrosity. Next, imagine you're sprinting toward a large group of Orks -- you put your shoulders down and plow through the group, turning the smaller beasts into a bloody puree and scattering the larger beasts in every direction, all in spectacular slow-motion.<br />
<br />
Now you've got an idea of what my time with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/warhammer-40k-space-marine">Warhammer 40K: Space Marine</a> was like.<br />

Orcs and goblins, <em>man</em>. It seems like no matter where (or when) you are, they always seem to crop up, ready to barbarically dismantle the human race. Previously planned for a vague summer release, THQ has announced that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/warhammer-40k-space-marine"><em>Warhammer 40K: Space Marine</em></a> will land on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this August. To accompany the news, a fresh batch of screenshots have been released as well.<br />
<br />
Our best efforts, however, have been unable to spot even one giant shoulder pad. All we're left with is some shots of Chaos and Renegade units. Despite their lack of padding, we <em>suppose</em> you can still check them out. If you can bear the sight of all the cold, unpadded shoulders, that is.<br />

Look, THQ, we understand that you want folks to know that <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/warhammer-40k-space-marine">Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine</a></em> is still in development. Releasing new screens like you did today is a good idea, but they look just like the ones from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/12/preview-warhammer-40-000-space-marine/">our preview</a> in August. How about some shots of the Space Marine in, say, a snow level?<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/08/warhammer-40-000-space-marine-still-exists-still-looks-the-sam/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine still exists, still looks the same</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/08/warhammer-40-000-space-marine-still-exists-still-looks-the-sam/">Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine still exists, still looks the same</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 08 Dec 2010 16:05:00 EST. THQ today published a "core games" release calendar, highlighted by the revised May 2011 date given for <em>Red Faction: Armageddon</em>, which pushes it out of a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/q1-2011">crowded first quarter</a> -- but just a few months beyond the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/11/next-red-faction-planned-for-march-2011/">initially proposed date</a>. The calendar spans the publisher's fiscal 2012 (April 2011 - March 2012) and also includes a Spring 2011 release window for <em>MX vs. ATV Alive</em>, followed by the planned summertime launch of <em>Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine</em>. A new <em>Saints Row</em> game (or <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/29/thq-saints-row-for-3ds-was-already-being-made-for-xbox-live-ar/">games</a>?) and a <em>WWE</em> iteration are expected next fall.<br />
<br />
Additionally, an upcoming <em>UFC</em> title has been slated for Winter 2012 (January-March 2012). Of course, all dates are "subject to change," THQ notes.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/13/red-faction-armageddon-coming-may-2011-new-saints-row-next-fal/">Red Faction: Armageddon coming May 2011; new Saints Row next fall</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 13 Sep 2010 17:12:00 EST. Even at this early point in the game's production, it's probably already clich&eacute;d to refer to Relic Entertainment's <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/warhammer-40000-space-marine"><em>Warhammer 40,0000: Space Marine</em></a> as <em>"</em>Gears of Warhammer," but <em>man</em> is it an apt description. Despite its innovative RTS roots (working on the acclaimed <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/homeworld"><em>Homeworld</em></a> and <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/dawn-of-war">Dawn of War</a> </em>series), Relic is diving headfirst into the third-person shooter genre, and all of the conventions are here: Gruff-voiced space marines (literally), big shoulder armor, big guns, huge explosions and production values, and there's even a gosh-darn exploding train.<br />
<br />
I got to see the game in action for the first time this week at THQ's headquarters in Agoura, California, and while the influences from other shooters are very clear, Relic producer Raphael Van Lierop wants you to know that <em>Space Marine</em> is Relic's big opportunity to step outside the genre they've become known for. "It's about putting our foot down and making a statement," he said. "And saying we're not just really great developers of RTS games, we're great developers of entertainment."<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/warhammer-40000-space-marine-08-12-10/">Warhammer 40000 Space Marine (08-12-10)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/warhammer-40000-space-marine-08-12-10/#3253366"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/08/valkyriev02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/warhammer-40000-space-marine-08-12-10/#3253368"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/08/boomheadshotv02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/warhammer-40000-space-marine-08-12-10/#3253369"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/08/closeupshootingv02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/warhammer-40000-space-marine-08-12-10/#3253371"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/08/meleenobv02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/warhammer-40000-space-marine-08-12-10/#3253372"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/08/plasmashotv02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/12/preview-warhammer-40-000-space-marine/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Preview: Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/12/preview-warhammer-40-000-space-marine/">Preview: Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 12 Aug 2010 19:00:00 EST. A <a href="http://investor.thq.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=96376&amp;p=irol-newsArticle&amp;ID=1451898&amp;highlight=">THQ press release</a> has announced that upcoming third-person shooter <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/warhammer-40000-space-marine"><em>Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine</em></a>, formerly slated to land only on the PS3 and 360, will also arrive on the PC when the game launches early next year. <br />
<br />
We'd worry about PC gamers getting this particular installment in the franchise confused with all the other <em>Warhammer</em> titles currently available on their platform. However, considering this one has you mowing down wave after wave of orcs using novelty-sized guns and swords, rather than ... doing <em>strategy game stuff</em>, we don't think you guys will have any problem seeing the distinction.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/26/warhammer-40k-space-marine-also-storming-pcs-next-year/">Warhammer 40K: Space Marine also storming PCs next year</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 26 Jul 2010 19:40:00 EST. <em>Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine</em> may have the most generic title this side of the Imperium, but after popping up on our galactic monitoring devices almost two years ago in a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/08/rumor-warhammer-40k-third-person-shooter-in-development/">leaked video</a>, we've been eager to discover more about it.<br />
<br />
During E3 we spoke with Morten Haugaard, global brand manager of all things 40K at THQ, who told us that the game had come a long way at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Relic/">Relic</a> since that original leak -- back then, it was a with a different developer. While noting that <em>Space Marine</em> was "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/22/thq-puts-devils-third-in-2012-reconfirms-darksiders-sequel/">still a ways out</a>," Haugaard said that the development team includes <em>Gears</em> and <em>God of War</em> alum. Aha! That might explain why the game appears to be a hybrid of those visceral (<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/visceral">lower case "v"</a>) franchises. See if you agree after watching the <em>Space Marine</em> trailer after the break.<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
	THQ's Brian Farrell has revealed on today's investor conference call that the company is planning to revisit some of its most successful franchises as far away as the fiscal year of 2012 (which would be sometime after March 2011), including <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/03/darksiders-rides-into-1-2-million-homes-thq-financially-recover/">this year's bestseller</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/darksiders"><em>Darksiders</em></a>, and the popular <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/saints-row"><em>Saint's Row</em></a> franchise. Farrell says the company is looking to fiscal 2012 for "accelerated growth with three major core game titles scheduled: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/warhammer-40k-space-marine"><em>Warhammer 40k Space Marine</em></a>, a sequel to <em>Darksiders</em> and the third generation of our popular <em>Saint's Row</em> franchise."</div>
<br />
Given that these are more than a year away, we don't have any more information besides the fact that they're planned for release (Who will <em>Darksiders</em> ape next? Will <em>Saint's Row</em> finally <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9l_YN-yRCVY">solve all of those bugs</a>?). But news of sequels for both games will be welcomed by their respective fans.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/03/darksiders-saints-row-sequels-from-thq-in-fiscal-2012/">Darksiders, Saint's Row sequels from THQ in fiscal 2012</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 03 Feb 2010 18:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/thq">THQ</a> has officially confirmed work on <em>Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine</em>, yet another game set against the backdrop of Games Workshop's gritty tabletop universe. Relic has again been handed developer duties on the title, though unlike <em>Dawn of War,</em> the console-focused <em>Space Marine</em> will be an action RPG that lets players control individual units through a "narrative-driven story campaign and in wide-scale online battles." <br /><br />In development for both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, it's unclear what ties, if any, the project has to the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/08/rumor-warhammer-40k-third-person-shooter-in-development/">leaked <em>Space Marine</em> footage</a> that made the rounds late last year. However, judging from this <a href="http://au.xbox360.ign.com/dor/objects/14352257/warhammer-40000-space-marine/videos/spacemarine_trl_battle_52709.html">IGN-hosted trailer</a>, the game certainly looks to keep more with <em>40K</em>'s combat-heavy fiction when it eventually decides to chainsword retail shelves.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/28/warhammer-40-000-space-marine-cleansing-consoles-for-the-empero/">Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine cleansing consoles for the emperor</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 28 May 2009 09:28:00 EST. Apparently, there's some "leaked" footage of a third-person <em>Warhammer 40K</em> shooter floating around the internets. The game, with the awfully generic subtitle of "<em>Space Marine</em>," appears to be a mix of <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/gears-of-war-2"><em>Gears of War</em></a> and <em>God of War</em>. The voice-over that accompanies the video, which <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=232456">Eurogamer</a> guesses belongs a developer, explains that the game is focused on brutal, close-quarters combat.<br /><br />We've contacted <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/thq">THQ</a>, which holds the video game license to the <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/warhammer-40k"><em>Warhammer 40K</em></a> universe, to see if it can shed some of the Emperor's light on this topic. While we're not exactly sure about the video's authenticity, it certainly has had some nice work put into it. Find it after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/08/rumor-warhammer-40k-third-person-shooter-in-development/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Rumor: Warhammer 40K third-person shooter in development</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/08/rumor-warhammer-40k-third-person-shooter-in-development/">Rumor: Warhammer 40K third-person shooter in development</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 08 Sep 2008 14:50:00 EST.
