In Titan, the "signature" game mode according to the FAQ, players support two giant creatures fighting each other during the match.

TimeGate also says it hopes to bring "everyone to the development table to influence how the game grows and changes." Minimum will be in closed alpha soon, and is set for a Steam release whenever it's ready.

TimeGate is probably best known at the moment for its work on Aliens: Colonial Marines, but the company also made Section 8 and Kohan: Immortal Sovereigns in the past, so Minimum is coming from a substantial history of development experience for PC.

Update: The game will be available through Steam's Early Access channel on April 16 in North America.
Minimum: a free-to-play shooter from TimeGate [update] originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 10 Apr 2013 03:20:00 EST. The video above from Halo Waypoint takes a quick tour of Halo 4's new arsenal and the remastered sound effects for each.

Most of the guns have an added oomph - we like the whooshing sound behind rockets now, for example - but one thing is kind of odd: the shotgun still sounds like it's being fired inside a sound-proof room. If you thought that being just two months away from the Resistance 3 launch (September 6) meant there was nothing left to learn about the game, think again! In this dev diary, Insomniac talks about a not-so-obvious influence for the gritty alien shooter: the cartoonish Ratchet and Clank series.
Resistance 3 welcomes weapon wheel and upgrades originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 13 Jul 2011 08:30:00 EST. Valve has announced that if you pre-order the upcoming Call of Juarez: The Cartel on Steam, you'll get a copy of 2009's Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood for free. Just like a few other previous Steam pre-order deals (Portal 2's granted a copy of the first game ), you'll be able to give the game away to someone else if you already happen to have a copy of Bound in Blood of your own.

That's not all: a Steam pre-order will also get you two exclusive in-game weapons, though it's not yet been revealed exactly what those are. Hey -- maybe a chicken cannon. Because, y'know, it's ... a chicken cannon.
Pre-order Call of Juarez: The Cartel on Steam, get Bound in Blood free originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 26 May 2011 01:00:00 EST. Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light was one of our favorite games at this year's E3 -- while it's a new taste for the franchise, it certainly seemed like one gamers will enjoy. But even if all of the puzzle-solving and co-op has you worried that Lara's gone too cerebral, let this trailer reassure you: The girl still knows how to shoot things until they stop moving.

She and partner Totec do so with all kinds of heavy weaponry, including flamethrowers, rocket launchers and whatever else they find laying around that ancient temple they're exploring. The video also shows off some of the game's relic and artifact system, which will not only let you customize weapons with various stats and abilities, but encourage replaying of the game, as some of the relics will require a few runs through the title to obtain. The Halo assault rifle has had a difficult time earning respect. It was totally outshined by the pistol in Halo: CE, ditched entirely for Halo 2 and brought back again in Halo 3 -- only to lose the spotlight to the battle rifle. Now, thanks to a creative Halo fan, the assault rifle has been brought to life ... and completely nerfed. (Like, it's actually a Nerf gun -- get it?)

Taking a stock Nerf rifle and an "infamous knock off dollar store assault rifle," a modder known as Moz cobbled together this Halo assault rifle, adding custom pieces and paint. The best part: It actually works; albeit with a slightly lower rate of fire than an actual assault rifle. See it in action after the break.
It probably won't surprise you to learn that Halo: Reach will offer its players a wide assortment of methods of brutalizing one another. These methods were recently revealed in the latest Bungie update, which heated anticipators of the upcoming shooter should go read immediately.

Said update reveals a new "Armor Abilities" system, in which temporary bonuses which used to appear on the battleground are now ingrained into pre-fabricated loadouts. For instance, the Active Camo power-up is now tied to a load-out. An Ability called "Armor Lock" makes you temporarily invincible (and stationary), deflecting any shots, and wrecking the shop of any vehicle attempting to run you over. Also, our beloved jet pack falls into this category, rendering all other Armor Abilities completely meaningless.

Also revealed in the update is a handful of new weapons and intriguing new gameplay mechanics -- including the announcement that the Covenant Elite is physically superior to the Spartan, which will prevent them from playing against one another in some gametypes. That's ... that's speciesist, Bungie.
Bungie talks Halo: Reach armor, weapons and jet packs originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 03 Apr 2010 11:30:00 EST. Fact: there are 16,164,886 guns in Borderlands according to Gearbox Software developers Matthew Armstrong and Jimmy Sieben. That's a lot of guns. Remember that scene in The Matrix where Neo says "Guns. Lots and lots of guns."? It's a lot more than that. That's also the number of guns before the DLC, which has inflated it even further. So how do you have someone design each one of those firearms and build out the specs? Even if you only paid 25 cents per gun, that would still chew into your development budget to the tune of over four million dollars. So what do you do, hotshot?

Easy! You make a system that does it all for you. In an SXSW panel, Sieben and Armstrong spoke about the systemic development tool named Gearbuilder that they developed, going into detail about how they created the system to handle the creation of that many customized guns. It generates the guns based on one of 12 different manufacturers, giving each one a different grip, body, cylinder, barrel and accessories. Based on those, that same system determines how much damage the gun will deal. But what's surprising is, as impressive a figure as 16 million is, it's still only one gun. Shoot on through the break for more.
Continue reading SXSW: Creating 87 bazillion guns for Borderlands

SXSW: Creating 87 bazillion guns for Borderlands originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 16 Mar 2010 03:00:00 EST. Wondering what the official Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 table for ZEN Pinball looks like in motion? Wonder no more -- the video above will show you all of the Hayabusa-style bumper action you'll be able to find, complete with ramps, flashing lights, ninja spirits and... burning pagodas? Boy, those ZEN folks aren't really pinball traditionalists, are they? But it does look fun.

The table will bring new gameplay modes and missions along with it to the PlayStation Store on Thursday, January 14, for $2.49 (€1.99). Of course, it's DLC for the original ZEN Pinball game, so you've got to have that, too. Wait, we just rewatched it -- did Ryu just slice the ball in half? That's pretty awesome!
ZEN Pinball's Ninja Gaiden table trailer slices and dices originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 13 Jan 2010 20:15:00 EST. Oh, three different kinds of scopes? An optional grenade launcher attachment? Yeah, those are pretty cool, we guess -- however, we'd also like a different stock, ammo clip, suppressor and barrel on there as well. Hey, while we're at it, we also need a blender. You know, for when we require a cool coconut smoothie in the middle of a heated firefight.

The latest trailer for Army of Two: The 40th Day gives us a look into the weapon customization engine we've always dreamed of, giving us unparalleled control over our in-game boomsticks. You can quickly turn your military grade M107 into a hulking, unwieldy monstrosity, complete with hideous, circus-themed camouflage. Sadly, the above trailer doesn't show off any kitchen appliance attachments -- we're sure they'll show up as DLC shortly after the game launches on January 12.
Army of Two: The 40th Day to offer weapon customization, garish camo originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 18 Nov 2009 14:00:00 EST. Insomniac Games' "Weapons 101" PAX panel had a pair of treats for Ratchet and Clank fans. After giving attendees a look at Crack in Time's expansive list of armaments, the game's director, Brian Allgeier, revealed two brand new guns: The Chimp-O-Matic, which turns enemies into adorable monkeys (and changes robotic enemies into robotic monkey toys with cymbals), and the Rift Inducer 5000, a weapon which summons tentacles from an interdimensional portal, which in turn grasp enemies and abscond with them through the vortex.

Man, that seems kinda unfair, doesn't it?
Let's make one point very clear from the onset: The Mario Kart series has thoroughly rocked our boxers since 1992. Despite some shortcomings we still have pretty high praise for Wii's latest iteration, and most fanboys agree that there currently exists no better Nintendo Wi-Fi experience. For everything Mario Kart does right, though, there always seems to be a cheaply overpowered item that renders even the most skilled racer indefensible.

So this is us venting. We have seen too many races (and online VR points) slip away on account of nasty item distribution. The series' long-standing method of reserving the best (or at least most destructive) pickups for trailing racers can be especially frustrating to those who would have otherwise earned a legitimate first place rank. Competition, in effect, is deadened by a deliberately equalized playing field. Mario Kart's algorithm for item probability is more at fault than the items themselves, but you know you've cussed out a spiny blue shell before. Now get angry with us in our new rant gallery.

Fancy a look at just a few of upcoming space-based survival horror Dead Space's weapons? Then you're in luck. GameTrailers has three videos, each showing one of the game's weapons in action. Our favorite? The Line Gun. Using it to slice through enemies looks extremely visceral and satisfying. Having said that we have a soft spot for the Pulse Gun's secondary fire too.

In reality, it's just an excuse to watch more gameplay footage, which we're always happy to do. Dead Space will be out in less than a month, so this is a perfect way to ramp up the hype a bit. The videos can be found after the cut.
Continue reading Meet some of the weapons of Dead Space

Meet some of the weapons of Dead Space originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 16 Sep 2008 09:15:00 EST. Sony Computer Entertainment has declared its intention to take "the most appropriate action" against an online retailer making its Beretta and butter from a replica air gun. The weapon, based on one wielded by the goofy, treasure-hunting protagonist of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, is currently listed for $169.88 on the King of Swords website. Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, a Sony representative noted that the "PS3 Uncharted Drake's Fortune Full Metal M92 Airsoft Gun" was in no way an officially endorsed or condoned product, despite its use of the game's artwork in advertisement.

This isn't the first time a publisher has rushed to arms over the sale of replica weapons. In February of this year, Square Enix took stern legal action against those hoping to sell real things based on fake things.
Sony not amused by Uncharted replica gun originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 20 May 2008 08:00:00 EST. Anyone who wasn't lucky enough to experience the closed beta of the slightly controversial EA first-person comedy-shooter (not kidding), Battlefield: Bad Company, will soon have their chance. Today EA announced that a demo for the DICE developed title will hit the Xbox Live Marketplace and PSN on June 5. The single and multiplayer demo promises to showcase what was in the beta as well as the wacky characters found in the campaign mode. Gamers who decide to pre-order the title from select retailers will be treated an early download of the demo beginning May 29.

For those at home keeping score you'll remember pre-ordering and playing the demo will give gamers access to two of the five controversial weapons found in the beta. Pre-ordering gives gamers access to the QBU88 Sniper Rifle while downloading and playing the demo nets players the UZI Submachine Gun.

Pictured is the UNSC BR55 Battle Rifle, made of die-cast metal. The rifle is 3.3" x 6" x 2.8", perfect for a little corner of your desk.

The other weapon model available is the Covenant Carbine, which is a similar size to the rifle. Currently both models are pre-order only, but who isn't used to that from their games retailer by this point? The units will be shipped sometime this fall. You could always place one of these on your Halo Xbox 360, while you wear your Master Chief suit, and drink your Master Chief Mountain Dew. Merchandising, merchandising, where the real money from the game is made. No word yet if they'll add more weapon models, but we're holding out for Needler bookends.
Thankfully, it recently started beta testing and we're looking forward to getting a solid look of the end product by E3. When Richard "Lord British" Garriott (who we recommend not robbing) showed the game last year, it was coming along and looked like a perfectly fine alternative to the fantasy filled orc-lands we've gotten used to in the MMO market.

In the video, after the break, we get a look at Tabula Rasa's weapons. Graphics have never been a big selling point of MMOs (ask Vanguard what happens when you try do that), so we're just waiting to get a real feel for the questing and gameplay once the beta reports get out. Personally, we still like the Team Fortress 2 heavy weapons video much better.
Continue reading Tabula Rasa shows off heavy weapons

Tabula Rasa shows off heavy weapons originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 04 Jun 2007 20:25:00 EST. As part of their in depth analysis of random Halo 3 technology, Bungie.net posted an analysis of an old weapon gone new, the MA5C Assault Rifle. Again, it is written in an army field report style with soldier opinions, technical specifications, and weapon combo strategies. One of our favorite soldier quotes referring to the assault rifle has to be "The (MA5C) is the workhorse for us ground-pounders. Just holding it makes you feel like God's own anti-son-of-a-blam!-machine". The assault rifle is similar in looks to it's older brother the MA5B (which appeared in the original Halo), but acts more like its Halo 2 cousin the BR55 Battle Rifle. Key differences that separate this assault rifle from the Halo version is that the clip holds much less rounds (32 to be exact), each bullet is more damaging, and it is much more accurate at longer distances. We also hear that it's wicked brutal when used as a melee weapon. The MA5C Assault Rifle will be the workhorse in Halo 3 and we're looking forward to using it to splatter grunt juice over every wall.
If you've played the demo, you got a good taste of what to expect from the upcoming PSP-exclusive Killzone: Liberation. You can only carry one weapon at a time, meaning weapons selection is pretty crucial to the strategy of the game. Thankfully, there are crates that will supply you with the necessary tools you'll need (for example: a rocket launcher before a deadly battle against two tanks). GameTrailers.com has posted an excellent video feature, covering the various weapons in the game. Their favorite? A explosive crossbow, a la Darkwatch. They reveal details on how you can purchase new weapons, use C4, command your teammates to cover you with turret fire, ride a tank, and more. Chris found the game demo to be pretty damn good, and with all these gameplay features, it seems like the full game will not disappoint (hopefully).
From the developers of Hello Kitty: Rescue Mission (hey, developers gotta pay the bills somehow, right?) comes the PSP-exclusive shooter Bounty Hounds. It's been a long time since we last heard about this game, but Namco Bandai has blown the covers off this game big time. The main gameplay involves you dual-wielding Halo 2-style, and you'll obviously have to choose the right weapons for the right occassion. In a feat of technical marvel, the developers have managed to squeeze a feature that we thought only the PlayStation 3 could do: real-time weapons swapping. With 500 weapons and items you can equip, and a unique energy field mode, this game is looking up to not be just a good shooter, but an original one as well. But they didn't just go around giving honors to any old weapon willy-nilly. They stipulated, "flaming fireballs and magic spells are out, but blowing things up is definitely in." Their understandably FPS-heavy list breaks down like this:

10. Cerebral Bore (Turok 2 & 3): Turok 3 was a bore, amirite?

9. Chainsaw (Doom): did they ever figure out why there was a chainsaw on Mars?

8. Spreadgun (Contra): you don't use the spreadgun, do you? Wuss ...

7. Railgun (Quake 2): the do-it-yourself super weapon of hobbyists everywhere.

6. Laptop Gun (Perfect Dark Zero): gets the "remember when this game was good?" nod.

5. Energy Sword (Halo 2): you cheap bastard.

4. Ice Beam (Metroid): the retro, non-FPS Metroid vote (not that Retro).

3. BFG (Doom): the granddaddy of all big fuckin' guns.

2. Red Turtle Shell (Mario Kart): the dark horse weapon of the list, and a proven way to destroy a friendship.

1. Gravity Gun (Half-Life 2): alright, we gotta give it to them, the gravity gun is some serious weaponry.

Undoubtedly, some of you are boiling over with rage that _______ wasn't included! Though the Joystiq staffers don't agree on much ("tastes great" ... "no, less filling") we did unite in our disappointment regarding the omission of Mario's mushroom-mushing derrière. Finally, I decided the bizarrely suggestive goo-shooting weapon, which is availableat Toys R Us until some exec somewhere gets a clue, looks enough like the plasma rifle in Halo to interest Bungiefanatics, especially if you painted it purple. Alright, so it's a stretch. But it would surely make for an explosiveaddition to the Halo 3 armoury on the Chief's next mission (or emission).
