Not only is this my first ever Webcomic Wrapup, but I've been a member of Joystiq's staff for a mere ten days. In ten days, a lot can happen. Just this week, we witnessed the closure of 38 Studios and Big Huge Games. It was a spectacular mess.

From the news came an unbelievable public outcry. The hashtag "#38jobs" began trending across the United States on Twitter. Facebook pages, websites, and Google docs sprang up, all bellowing support for those in the industry that lost their jobs this week in the form of open job postings.

Meanwhile, I had the privilege of watching the Joystiq team document the entire disaster. In a word, it was humbling. I feel honored to be a part of this team and deliver content to you, the readers. We so easily forget that in the land of video games, there is a significant impact on the well-being of families, and the reporting of news deserves an equal touch of care.

Likewise, a giggle here or there is important. I encourage you to check out last week's webcomics and vote for your favorite after the break to get those giggles in.

The change has been dramatic, to say the least, and while I feel less "full of goo" than I once did, I fear that I also may be changing into someone, or something, that I'm not comfortable with.

Earlier this week, for instance, I purchased blueberry-flavored Pop Tarts while grocery shopping, when I just as easily could have bought S'mores flavored. There wasn't even anyone else with me, it was a decision I made of my own volition and what's worse, I didn't even realize it until much, much later. This is just one example of the many, increasingly frequent health-conscious decisions I've made as of late.

So, I just wanted to tell you guys that I love you, while I still can. I don't know what is to become of me, but I want you to take these webcomics from last week, read them, vote for your favorites after the break, and enjoy. The old me would have wanted it that way.

Well, at least until the first of July.

Amazon and state comptroller Susan Combs have reached an agreement wherein Amazon will create 2,500 jobs, contribute $200 million in capital investment and begin collecting sales tax on all purchases made by Texans effective July 1, according to the Austin-American Statesman. So, if you live in Texas and have been putting off a rather large purchase, maybe think about getting a move on it. Back in my day, (1998, to be specific), there were only 151 Pokemon to capture and trade, and that was more than enough. It took months to learn everything about the game, but eventually I knew everything there was to know about the creatures of Kanto and Pokemon Blue as a whole. I was a king.

That all changed in the year 2000, when Pokemon Gold brought 100 new monsters to the Pokedex and crippling irrelevancy to the knowledge I'd slaved to accumulate. I tried to keep up, sure, and for a while I kept at it, but eventually I faltered, mentally exhausted from transforming myself into a compendium of information no longer needed or sought after by my peers.

I didn't have the strength to carry on, but to those who fought further, I salute you with these webcomics from last week and a related poll after the break.

We made so much Vita content, in fact, that a lot of it never made it on the site due to various entirely factual and totally not untrue reasons.

For instance! Joystiq's managing editor JC Fletcher swallowed an entire Vita in order to covertly acquire clandestine x-rays of the device's internals, but the x-rays were unreadable once developed due to JC's molybdenum skeleton. Another completely true thing happened when Joystiq reviews editor Richard Mitchell took his Vita to the coasts of Australia to test its housing's resistance to poisonous octopus suckers, but filming permit issues with the Australian government and a complaint filed by the Australian Society for the Ethical Treatment of Poisonous Octopi (ASETPO) kept the resulting coverage offline.

If you weren't aware, don't panic: We've got some helpful tips for how to make the day a memorable experience, regardless of your relationship status. For instance! If you've got a significant other, head down to the grocery store and buy small square pretzels, Hershey's Hugs and Valentine's Day-themed M&M's. Stack the Hugs on top of the pretzels and the M&M's on top of the Hugs, and then place the stacks into an oven set to low heat until the M&M's melt into the tops of the Hugs. Refrigerate over night, and by morning you'll have a delicious homemade treat for your SO.

If you're single, go ahead buy the pretzels, Hugs and M&M's, but don't bother with any of the other steps. After all, who are you trying to impress? Shove modest handfuls of all three ingredients into your face until the pain in your heart is masked by a sugary layer of processed regret. For the love of God, don't take them up on that offer. Or if you do, hang on to that defective insert for dear life. This is the kind of thing that, in 15 or 20 years, will be going for thousands of dollars on the collector market.

If "quickly corrected printing error" and "fairly limited production run" don't sound like the bank-account infusing ding of a 1950s cash register, I don't know what does. SoulCalibur 5 comes out on Tuesday, so we thought we'd take this opportunity to take a look back at the very first tale of swords and souls, eternally retold. Soul Edge (Soul Blade in North America) was released in arcades in 1995 and on the original PlayStation in 1996 and '97. The game's cast of characters lacked many of the series' most (currently) notable faces, including Ivy, Nightmare and Astaroth.

It did, however, include many gameplay mechanics which were never featured in any of its sequels, most notably breakable weapons and a rock-paper-scissors-esque minigame that would occur whenever two moves of equal strength and priority collided. The game also took place 23 years before SoulCalibur 5, which means that series masochist Voldo is well into his mid 60s at this point. Now, I obviously know that 25 isn't old in human years, and I'm not about to go have a "quarter-life crisis," but I can't help but feel like I'm a little behind the curve, accomplishment-wise. I mean, Mega Man has already taken down over 80 Robot Masters, but I've only destroyed, what, 12? Thirteen at the most?

The last qualifying tournament is in June, so we should have plenty of time to dust off ol' Nasty-Asty when SoulCalibur 5 launches at the end of the month. Truth be told, we're still a little perplexed by the omission of any BlazBlue games from the line-up. Granted, Blazblue has a much smaller following than Ultimate Marvel or Street Fighter, but it's far more popular than Mortal Kombat in the competitive fighting game community.

It isn't so much the idea that you're never going to see this person again, because chances are that's not true. What hurts is knowing that someone who has been a staple of your life for years will no longer be there in a communal sense, that the companionship you've grown so accustomed to will be missing. When you care about someone, either romantically or platonically, you give them a piece of yourself, a piece they take with them when they leave.

Sometimes though, we get lucky, and our goodbyes are formed out of hope and optimism rather than loss and grief. Chris Grant, Justin McElroy, Griffin McElroy and Arthur Gies are walking into a brighter future for themselves and their loved ones; we know this because these are men who truly adore what they do, and the only thing that could pry them away from Joystiq's embrace is the promise of an even better tomorrow, which we hope they find as soon as humanly possible.

This is the transition between Joel and Mike, or Jason and Tommy. It's scary, but everything is going to be okay. We promise.

We're all for zany crossovers, mind you, but giving Oda Nobunaga his own Jigglypuff feels weird even for us, and we're into some weird stuff. It's not that we don't think strategy games have a place in the Pokemon universe, it's just that Nobunaga was a ruthless warlord who lived a life of bloodshed and conquest.

For instance! After behaving so shamefully at his father's funeral that his mentor committed seppukku (seriously), Nobunaga and his brother Nobumitsu conspired and eventually succeeded in murdering their uncle Oda Nobutomo, after which they lived in his house for 10 years. Sounds like Pokemon to us!

(Look, we know there's only 4 comics this week, but it's the holiday season, and you guys have no idea how many webcomics forgot to be about video games.)

The Thirty-Second Annual Weekly Webcomic Wrapup Hyper Webcomic Submission Tournament is far from over, however, which means that if you draw, know of, or write an extremely excellent webcomic, send a link to Jordan at Joystiq dawt cawm and tell us about it. Be sure to include the word "webcomic" in the subject so our filters can keep it out of the spam folder.

The fact that VVVVVV is coming to the Nintendo DS sometime this year made us nostalgic for Terry Cavanagh's incredible indie darling, and in rediscovering the title's gravity-based challenges, we also rediscovered its straight-up phenomenal soundtrack.

Composed by Magnus Pålsson, aka Souleye, the soundtrack (officially entitled PPPPPP) is a catchy tour de force of playful melodies and haunting chiptune refrains. The whole thing is on Souleye's YouTube Channel, so we recommend pumpin' the volume while you check out this week's webcomics, and vote for your favorite after the jump.

October is the very best month out of the entire year, not only because of its delicious, terrible candies and its stein-stocked, lederhosen-laden 'fests, but also because October is the only time of year when cosplaying is not only accepted, but encouraged. We don't care who you are or how long you've been alive, costumes are fun, and deep down every human being likes to pretend they're more exciting than they really are.

It was late. The sun had set on this cold, ravenous town and the city-wide hum of the florescent lights and traffic had given way to the dull roar of sirens and arson fires; a bleak melody this God-forsaken place had become too accustomed to. I had just closed the Payne case, and as I collected the cracked, worn possessions from my desk and made for the door, the phone rang.

"P-please ... please help me," said the voice in the receiver. She sounded terrified. "Th-they want... they say they w-want w-webcomics, lot's of 'em..."

"Webcomics? Lady, who are you? What's goin' on?" The phone went dead, and my head filled with the drone of the dial-tone. There was a lot of stink in that city, and I could already smell that my night was far from over, and that I'd be voting on my favorite comics after the break.

Sure, in the eighties and nineties most people were unfamiliar with a lot of Japanese concepts and storytelling archetypes, but things are different now, right? Right?

Wrong. Nothing says "We don't think you're ready for this jelly, America" more than the Tokyo Game Show, which has completely enveloped our site, as well as the rest of the gaming blogosphere. Over the last couple of days, our intrepid away team has documented huge piles of awesome stuff you'll never, ever have the opportunity to buy, as well as joys you'll never be able to experience. Let's face it: We're missing out. Big time.

In order to get their idea train rollin', we've come up with a few vampirism alternatives we'd like to put out there:
  • Dragon Ball Zampirism: Players contract a rare disease that causes them to scream uncontrollably for days on end. Should they die, they must wait around for NPCs to gather seven mystical spheres and wish them back to life.
  • Pocket Monstampirism: Players contract a rare disease that causes them to collect samples from 151 different creatures native to Skyrim.

You've awoken in a dark, moist dungeon. As you fumble for meaning in the blackness, you realize that The Draklivox must have put you here, since you lost the battle against him during The Queen's First Double Fate Tournament Edition Fighting Tournament. Eventually, you realize that the box of Eterna-Matches Sir Bigsby Biggleboggum gave you is still in your pocket. Striking a match against the cobble-stone floor beneath your feet reveals two giant levels on the wall to your left, both of which are in arm's reach.

This got us thinking: as cool as these remakes are, why is everyone going for the obvious, pedestrian solutions? Why use Halo and Counter-Strike when untapped, classic IPs like Chex Quest are just sitting there, gathering dust, not being updated to HD?

Kids these days, with their Chocolate Chex and their Cupcake Pebbles; they don't even know that Chex Quest was a thing. Its remake status could be our little secret, and to sweeten the deal, here are our seven favorite webcomics from last week. Remember to vote after the break!
