Not only is this my first ever Webcomic Wrapup, but I've been a member of Joystiq's staff for a mere ten days. In ten days, a lot can happen. Just this week, we witnessed the closure of 38 Studios and Big Huge Games. It was a spectacular mess.

From the news came an unbelievable public outcry. The hashtag "#38jobs" began trending across the United States on Twitter. Facebook pages, websites, and Google docs sprang up, all bellowing support for those in the industry that lost their jobs this week in the form of open job postings.

Meanwhile, I had the privilege of watching the Joystiq team document the entire disaster. In a word, it was humbling. I feel honored to be a part of this team and deliver content to you, the readers. We so easily forget that in the land of video games, there is a significant impact on the well-being of families, and the reporting of news deserves an equal touch of care.

Likewise, a giggle here or there is important. I encourage you to check out last week's webcomics and vote for your favorite after the break to get those giggles in.

Subprime Loans (Virtual Shackles)
You Got It (Nerf NOW!!)
Paynefully Subtle (No Cash Value)
Luigi's Mansion 2 (Game Over Nation)
Track and Field (Blow the Cartridge)
I know what I have to do (Magical Game Time)
Continue reading Weekly Webcomic Wrapup is a stranger in a strange land

Weekly Webcomic Wrapup is a stranger in a strange land originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 26 May 2012 23:30:00 EST. That name you see, "Mike Suszek," belongs to none other than our brand new, pine-fresh Weekend Editor, Mike Suszek.

This means that you'll be seeing a lot less of Jess Conditt and myself during the next couple of weekends as Mike settles into his new position, with the eventual goal being for Mike to take over the weekends entirely before too long.

Yes, that includes the Weekly Webcomic Wrapup, but we've still got at least one more weekend together, my darling readers. Come, let us cherish our remaining time together by reading these webcomics from last week, and voting for our favorites after the break.

Your Money or Your Life (Brawl in the Family)
The Deepest Pit of Hell (Virtual Shackles)
It takes a village (Extra Life)
Too Late (Nerf Now!!)
Masking Jape (Awkward Zombie)
Silence is Golden (GameOver Nation)
Deuce Duel (Hejibits)
You must win, my love (Magical Game Time)
Potion Purée (The Gamer Cat)
The Bitter End (Brentalfloss: The Comic)
Continue reading Weekly Webcomic Wrapup is welcoming a new member to Joystiq

Weekly Webcomic Wrapup is welcoming a new member to Joystiq originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 19 May 2012 23:30:00 EST. The change has been dramatic, to say the least, and while I feel less "full of goo" than I once did, I fear that I also may be changing into someone, or something, that I'm not comfortable with.

Earlier this week, for instance, I purchased blueberry-flavored Pop Tarts while grocery shopping, when I just as easily could have bought S'mores flavored. There wasn't even anyone else with me, it was a decision I made of my own volition and what's worse, I didn't even realize it until much, much later. This is just one example of the many, increasingly frequent health-conscious decisions I've made as of late.

So, I just wanted to tell you guys that I love you, while I still can. I don't know what is to become of me, but I want you to take these webcomics from last week, read them, vote for your favorites after the break, and enjoy. The old me would have wanted it that way.

Revenge of the Aparoids (Brawl in the Family)
The Warrior Spirit (Penny Arcade)
Hidden Power (Nerf Now!!)
Hands-On Experience (Awkward Zombie)
Canine Conundrum (Life in Aggro)
Continue reading Weekly Webcomic Wrapup is confused and scared

Weekly Webcomic Wrapup is confused and scared originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 12 May 2012 23:30:00 EST. Well, at least until the first of July.

Amazon and state comptroller Susan Combs have reached an agreement wherein Amazon will create 2,500 jobs, contribute $200 million in capital investment and begin collecting sales tax on all purchases made by Texans effective July 1, according to the Austin-American Statesman. By the time the under-water bouncy castle had been returned and AOL's private stretch hovercraft had taken the rest of the Joystiq Qrew back to their various homes across the country, there just wasn't enough time left to compile a list of our favorite webcomics from last week.

Thankfully, however, the situation has been rectified, and said list is available for your perusing. Back in my day, (1998, to be specific), there were only 151 Pokemon to capture and trade, and that was more than enough. It took months to learn everything about the game, but eventually I knew everything there was to know about the creatures of Kanto and Pokemon Blue as a whole. I was a king.

That all changed in the year 2000, when Pokemon Gold brought 100 new monsters to the Pokedex and crippling irrelevancy to the knowledge I'd slaved to accumulate. I tried to keep up, sure, and for a while I kept at it, but eventually I faltered, mentally exhausted from transforming myself into a compendium of information no longer needed or sought after by my peers.

I didn't have the strength to carry on, but to those who fought further, I salute you with these webcomics from last week and a related poll after the break.

Montezuma's Revenge (Penny Arcade)
Modern Entrepreneurs (Nerf Now!!)
Miranda Dead to Rights (Awkward Zombie)
Design on a Dime (Hejibits)
Love Taps (Life in Aggro)
Continue reading Weekly Webcomic Wrapup caught them all, once ...

Weekly Webcomic Wrapup caught them all, once ... originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 25 Feb 2012 23:30:00 EST. We made so much Vita content, in fact, that a lot of it never made it on the site due to various entirely factual and totally not untrue reasons.

For instance! Joystiq's managing editor JC Fletcher swallowed an entire Vita in order to covertly acquire clandestine x-rays of the device's internals, but the x-rays were unreadable once developed due to JC's molybdenum skeleton. Another completely true thing happened when Joystiq reviews editor Richard Mitchell took his Vita to the coasts of Australia to test its housing's resistance to poisonous octopus suckers, but filming permit issues with the Australian government and a complaint filed by the Australian Society for the Ethical Treatment of Poisonous Octopi (ASETPO) kept the resulting coverage offline.

My Sunny Valentine (Brawl in the Family)
Frigidity (Penny Arcade)
Valentines (Nerf Now!!)
Put On By The Ritz (Awkward Zombie)
At Least Battleships Have Guns (GameOver Nation)
Thank you for a gorgeous time (Manly Guys Doing Manly Things)
Bouncing Machine (The Gamer Cat)
Continue reading Weekly Webcomic Wrapup is getting ready for the Vita

Weekly Webcomic Wrapup is getting ready for the Vita originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 18 Feb 2012 23:30:00 EST. If you weren't aware, don't panic: We've got some helpful tips for how to make the day a memorable experience, regardless of your relationship status. For instance! If you've got a significant other, head down to the grocery store and buy small square pretzels, Hershey's Hugs and Valentine's Day-themed M&M's. Stack the Hugs on top of the pretzels and the M&M's on top of the Hugs, and then place the stacks into an oven set to low heat until the M&M's melt into the tops of the Hugs. Refrigerate over night, and by morning you'll have a delicious homemade treat for your SO.

If you're single, go ahead buy the pretzels, Hugs and M&M's, but don't bother with any of the other steps. After all, who are you trying to impress? Shove modest handfuls of all three ingredients into your face until the pain in your heart is masked by a sugary layer of processed regret. Alternatively, you can check out our favorite webcomics from this week and vote for your favorites after the break.

Another Rescue (Brawl in the Family)
Le Chat Avec Le Chapeau (Penny Arcade)
Voice (Nerf Now!!)
School of Hard Rocks (Life in Aggro)
Was Something Else Happening Today? The game's cast of characters lacked many of the series' most (currently) notable faces, including Ivy, Nightmare and Astaroth.

It did, however, include many gameplay mechanics which were never featured in any of its sequels, most notably breakable weapons and a rock-paper-scissors-esque minigame that would occur whenever two moves of equal strength and priority collided. The game also took place 23 years before SoulCalibur 5, which means that series masochist Voldo is well into his mid 60s at this point. While that mental imagine marinates, check out our favorite comics from last week. Vote after the break!

Spy Vs. This year not only marks the 25th Anniversary for Street Fighter and Mega Man, but also yours truly. Now, I obviously know that 25 isn't old in human years, and I'm not about to go have a "quarter-life crisis," but I can't help but feel like I'm a little behind the curve, accomplishment-wise. I mean, Mega Man has already taken down over 80 Robot Masters, but I've only destroyed, what, 12? Thirteen at the most?

And not once have I ever generated a powerful weather event by spinning in one place with my leg extended. I don't know, you guys, maybe we should all just read some webcomics instead of comparing ourselves to our idols. Remember to vote for your favorite after the break!
Now that we know what games are held within the EVO 2012 cornucopia of contusions, it's time for the fighters of the world to start training. The last qualifying tournament is in June, so we should have plenty of time to dust off ol' Nasty-Asty when SoulCalibur 5 launches at the end of the month. Truth be told, we're still a little perplexed by the omission of any BlazBlue games from the line-up. Granted, Blazblue has a much smaller following than Ultimate Marvel or Street Fighter, but it's far more popular than Mortal Kombat in the competitive fighting game community.

Saying goodbye is, when speaking in terms of someone you care about, probably the most difficult emotional interaction two human beings can share. It isn't so much the idea that you're never going to see this person again, because chances are that's not true. What hurts is knowing that someone who has been a staple of your life for years will no longer be there in a communal sense, that the companionship you've grown so accustomed to will be missing. When you care about someone, either romantically or platonically, you give them a piece of yourself, a piece they take with them when they leave.

Sometimes though, we get lucky, and our goodbyes are formed out of hope and optimism rather than loss and grief. Chris Grant, Justin McElroy, Griffin McElroy and Arthur Gies are walking into a brighter future for themselves and their loved ones; we know this because these are men who truly adore what they do, and the only thing that could pry them away from Joystiq's embrace is the promise of an even better tomorrow, which we hope they find as soon as humanly possible.

This is the transition between Joel and Mike, or Jason and Tommy. It's scary, but everything is going to be okay. We promise.
Look, we're gonna level with you: We haven't actually written anything this weekend. All the posts that went up today were written in advance, as were the posts going up tomorrow. Don't get us wrong, we love you guys to pieces, but we also love our families and the massive feasts they provide during the holidays. Seriously, you guys have no idea how good these twice-baked potatoes are.

So! Think of this post as a time capsule, preserving our favorite webcomics from this week for future posterity. Vote for your favorite after the break, and partake in some face-stuffing yourself, if possible. You've earned it.
So they're making another Pokemon game, and it's, uhm, a little different. We're all for zany crossovers, mind you, but giving Oda Nobunaga his own Jigglypuff feels weird even for us, and we're into some weird stuff. It's not that we don't think strategy games have a place in the Pokemon universe, it's just that Nobunaga was a ruthless warlord who lived a life of bloodshed and conquest.

For instance! After behaving so shamefully at his father's funeral that his mentor committed seppukku (seriously), Nobunaga and his brother Nobumitsu conspired and eventually succeeded in murdering their uncle Oda Nobutomo, after which they lived in his house for 10 years. Sounds like Pokemon to us!
Last night's Spike TV Video Games Awards ceremony was more painful to watch than embarrassing home movies filmed at a kitten-beheading festival. We had to watch grown, actual men get teabagged by other actual grown men, because that's what video games are all about, apparently. If you were fortunate enough to escape the dark void that is the VGAs, our liveblog of the event is a pretty accurate representation of what the experience is like.

We're going to try and calm down our newly acquired posttraumatic stress disorder by looking over our favorite webcomics from last week and voting for our favorites after the break. We suggest you do the same!
Are you flippin' serious? December? For real real? It was Halloween like 4 weeks ago, we are so entirely unprepared for this month. We have to take the annual Joystiq family photo, print up the annual Joystiq Neutral Holiday Celebration Cards featuring said photo, mark Ludwig's height on the doorframe to see how much he's grown since last year and then go shopping on top of everything else!

You may not be able to tell from out there in Internet-land, but the Joystiq Qrew isn't really the easiest group of kids to shop for. Last year, Ben Gilbert gave Chris Grant a set of steak knives and Chris locked Ben in a room with a bear. While we panic in our predesignated sub-groups, take a look at our favorite webcomics from last week, and vote for your favorite after the break.
The weekend after Thanksgiving is an important one for most American people. Some, who traveled great distances to spend the holiday with their closest friends and family, must now travel back; a bittersweet journey for most. For others, the weekend is about shopping, either for the thrill of the hunt, or for the opportunity to buy something they wouldn't be able to afford otherwise. And then there are people like us, who spend Thanksgiving weekend alone in a darkened room full of pies and shame.

However you spent your Thanksgiving break, we sincerely you and your's had a wonderful time. If you didn't, maybe our favorite webcomics from last week will cheer you up.
Next week, you guys. Black Friday. The biggest <strike>trampling</strike> shopping day of the year. Sure, there are plenty of guides out there for consumers, to find the best deals and get the most out of their holiday and whatnot, but what about the people actually working retail? How can they possibly know what fresh Hell waits for them in the early morning hours on November 25?

Well fear not, young-and-probably-temporary-retail-worker. We've been there and we've done that, and in our experience the only surefire way to survive an explosive retail warzone is via the mental safe haven created by webcomics. So! Allow our favorites from last week to drag your legless worn-torn husk of a body through the nightmare that awaits you, and be sure to vote for your favorite after the break.
Pfft, Black Friday? Big-box retailers like Best Buy and Toys R' Us may think they know what the deep discount is all about, but their savings a'int got nothin' on how good Crazy Eddie's is hookin' you up. That's right folks, for this weekend only, every single comic featured below is absolutely free!

You heard right, free! That's a one-hundred percent discount made possible by our extensive network of webcomics suppliers! What are you, stupid? We buy in bulk, and somehow that translates to ridiculous savings for you! Make sure and vote for your favorite after the break!!

In case you missed it earlier today, the Joystiq Qrew is growing mustaches for charity, to raise money for men's health research and prostate cancer awareness. Even Weekend Editor Jess Conditt is tapping into her Italian heritage in an effort to grow an impressive lady-stache, all for the good of men everywhere.

As you can tell from Richard Mitchell's 'stache update video above, the competition around the office is getting pretty fierce. There's no way that our interpersonal relationships will last through the entire month of November, so help ensure the collapse of our social structure by donating your bills to our faces. We may even save some lives in the process.

... what? Oh right, webcomics. The Thirty-Second Annual Weekly Webcomic Wrapup Hyper Webcomic Submission Tournament has come to a close, and the winner is ... the public! Check out the fruits of your labors below, and vote for your favorites after the break.
You guys! The first week of submissions have been excellent; the pool of webcomics we pull from for the Weekly Webcomic Wrapup is growing exponentially, as we hope the chuckles produced by the feature will.

The Thirty-Second Annual Weekly Webcomic Wrapup Hyper Webcomic Submission Tournament is far from over, however, which means that if you draw, know of, or write an extremely excellent webcomic, send a link to Jordan at Joystiq dawt cawm and tell us about it. Be sure to include the word "webcomic" in the subject so our filters can keep it out of the spam folder.

For now, check out our (expanded!) favorites from last week, including some new comics made possible by readers like you, and vote for your favorites after the break.

Note: If you submitted a comic and it's not below, fret not. Just because it's not here now doesn't mean it never will be, so keep at it.
That's right, folks! We're looking to expand the number of webcomics we feature every week, so welcome to the Thirty-Second Annual Weekly Webcomic Wrapup Hyper Webcomic Submission Tournament! If you write, draw, or read a hilarious, primarily gaming-oriented webcomic that has never been featured on the Weekly Webcomic Wrapup, send an e-mail to Jordan at Joystiq dawt cawm and tell us about it. Make sure and include the word "webcomic" in your subject, our filters like that.

Now, don't think for a second that we're not still completely in love with our existing stable of webcomics. We just know that there are amazing webcomics out there that we're unaware of, and we want you to tell us about them. Before you get started, though, take a look at our favorite comics from last week, and vote for your favorite after the break!
We're sick, Internet. The kind of sick that keeps you in bed all day, buried under every blanket in the house with one of those comical red heating bladders on your forehead. We barely have the strength to type, but you depend on the Weekly Webcomic Wrapup for culturally salient webcomics, and dammit we're not going to let you down now.

As we use the very last of our strength to hit the big red "PUBLISH" button on our blogging software, take a look at this week's webcomics, and vote for your favorites after the break. Just, you know, wash your hands afterwards. You don't want this, trust us.

The fact that VVVVVV is coming to the Nintendo DS sometime this year made us nostalgic for Terry Cavanagh's incredible indie darling, and in rediscovering the title's gravity-based challenges, we also rediscovered its straight-up phenomenal soundtrack.

Composed by Magnus Pålsson, aka Souleye, the soundtrack (officially entitled PPPPPP) is a catchy tour de force of playful melodies and haunting chiptune refrains. The whole thing is on Souleye's YouTube Channel, so we recommend pumpin' the volume while you check out this week's webcomics, and vote for your favorite after the jump.
October, you guys! October is the very best month out of the entire year, not only because of its delicious, terrible candies and its stein-stocked, lederhosen-laden 'fests, but also because October is the only time of year when cosplaying is not only accepted, but encouraged. We don't care who you are or how long you've been alive, costumes are fun, and deep down every human being likes to pretend they're more exciting than they really are.

We've got some interesting ideas for what we'll be doing cosplaying as this Halloween, but what are you kids cookin' up? Check out this week's webcomics, vote for your favorite in the poll after the jump, and share your costume ideas in the comments.
It was late. The sun had set on this cold, ravenous town and the city-wide hum of the florescent lights and traffic had given way to the dull roar of sirens and arson fires; a bleak melody this God-forsaken place had become too accustomed to. I had just closed the Payne case, and as I collected the cracked, worn possessions from my desk and made for the door, the phone rang.

"P-please ... please help me," said the voice in the receiver. She sounded terrified. "Th-they want... they say they w-want w-webcomics, lot's of 'em..."

"Webcomics? Lady, who are you? What's goin' on?" The phone went dead, and my head filled with the drone of the dial-tone. There was a lot of stink in that city, and I could already smell that my night was far from over, and that I'd be voting on my favorite comics after the break.
You know, in this modern day and age, it seems like most cultural boundaries have been torn down, and that the majority of the games that get released here in the states also get released in Japan, and vice versa. Sure, in the eighties and nineties most people were unfamiliar with a lot of Japanese concepts and storytelling archetypes, but things are different now, right? Right?

Wrong. Nothing says "We don't think you're ready for this jelly, America" more than the Tokyo Game Show, which has completely enveloped our site, as well as the rest of the gaming blogosphere. Over the last couple of days, our intrepid away team has documented huge piles of awesome stuff you'll never, ever have the opportunity to buy, as well as joys you'll never be able to experience. Let's face it: We're missing out. Big time.
So, in Skyrim, you'll be able to change into a Dracula, which is cool and everything, but we think Bethesda could have done one better by thinking outside the box. In order to get their idea train rollin', we've come up with a few vampirism alternatives we'd like to put out there:

Dragon Ball Zampirism: Players contract a rare disease that causes them to scream uncontrollably for days on end. Should they die, they must wait around for NPCs to gather seven mystical spheres and wish them back to life.

Pocket Monstampirism: Players contract a rare disease that causes them to collect samples from 151 different creatures native to Skyrim.

See? Either of those would be so much more original and unique than putting Draculas in your game. Feel free to submit your own vampirism alternatives, right after you check out our seven favorite webcomics from last week, and vote for your favorite after the break.
This week's release of Deus Ex: Human Revolution has us positively boiling over with nostalgia for those Choose Your Own Adventure books, so on this week's Weekly Webcomic Wrapup, we're going to do something a little different:

You've awoken in a dark, moist dungeon. As you fumble for meaning in the blackness, you realize that The Draklivox must have put you here, since you lost the battle against him during The Queen's First Double Fate Tournament Edition Fighting Tournament. Eventually, you realize that the box of Eterna-Matches Sir Bigsby Biggleboggum gave you is still in your pocket. Striking a match against the cobble-stone floor beneath your feet reveals two giant levels on the wall to your left, both of which are in arm's reach.
This week, Joystiq's intrepid PAX Force got a chance to sit down and spend some quality time with two high-profile shooter updates, Halo Combat Evolved Anniversary and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. This got us thinking: as cool as these remakes are, why is everyone going for the obvious, pedestrian solutions? Why use Halo and Counter-Strike when untapped, classic IPs like Chex Quest are just sitting there, gathering dust, not being updated to HD?

Kids these days, with their Chocolate Chex and their Cupcake Pebbles; they don't even know that Chex Quest was a thing. Its remake status could be our little secret, and to sweeten the deal, here are our seven favorite webcomics from last week. Remember to vote after the break!
We love the Skyrim balloon. In fact, we think Bethesda is really onto something with this whole "using impractical modes of transportation to advertise games" thing. We predict that other developers will take note of the balloon's universal, whimsical appeal, and that by this time next year, trade shows will be overrun with <strike>ridiculous</strike> unique displays of locomotion.
We're proud of and inspired by Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain for giving Donna Summer some well deserved exposure as a poet and lyricist. So much so, in fact, that we've decided to share some selected inspirational words from one of our favorite poets, Jun Senoue:

All the steps we take, all the moves we make, all the pain at stake... I see the chaos, for everyone; who are we? What can we do?

Can't hold on much longer, but I will never let go. I know, it's a one way track. Tell me now how long this will last? I'm not going to think this way, nor will I count on others. Close my eyes, and feel the burn. Now, I see what I've got to do.

Open your heart, it's going to be all right.

Beautiful. So moving. We bid you join us in feeling empowered by the strength of the written word by reading our favorite webcomics from last week. After the break, feel free to vote for your favorite while enjoying a musical rendition of Jun Senoue's work.
