The day-one system update enables a lot of important features, like Miiverse, Wii U Chat, eShop - none of which would do you any good without internet access anyway - and even Wii backward compatibility. If that effort is hampered by inability to connect with your router, you are not alone.

Nintendo tech forum user GAMEDEV posted a guide to manually connecting your Wii U to wi-fi. We've reproduced it after the break. We hope you're able to get online and start "Yeah!"-ing your friends' Miiverse posts immediately.
Continue reading How to connect a stubborn Wii U to wi-fi

How to connect a stubborn Wii U to wi-fi originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 19 Nov 2012 14:30:00 EST. You want to know more about multiplayer in Resistance: Burning Skies? Unfortunately, it seems that Sony isn't ready to share that info quite yet. After updating its game page with scant details on the game mode - Wi-fi-based "8-player online multiplayer across six unique maps and three modes" - Sony later removed said info.

Presumably the details were meant for a coordinated marketing push ahead of the game's May 29 launch date, but, uh, well, here they are! We've reached out to Sony for more info, but don't expect to hear much until the stars align (and Sony is good and ready to say its piece).

[Thanks, Knives Chau!]
Resistance: Burning Skies multiplayer page revealed, removed originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 03 Apr 2012 11:30:00 EST. The most recent 3DS system update provides free access to all of Boingo's North American airport Wi-Fi hotspots, which means layovers just got another dimension of fun. Boingo operates the Wi-Fi in 42 airports in North America and suggested that free connection for the 3DS would keep bratty kids quiet while waiting for their flights -- at least, that's what we got out of this quote from Boingo: "With the holiday season approaching, more leisure travelers and families with children will fill our airports and have access to our hotspots."
OnLive has begun rolling out support for Wi-Fi connections to its cloud gaming service. So sure is the company that it can offer lag free streaming of game content that it is bringing Wi-Fi support to subscribers before it planned to. Support is still in beta, but most OnLive members are supposed to see the fuctionality available sometime this month. OnLive users with questions can get answers from this FAQ.

Additionally, the company has announced an initiative to support indie games on the service, offering its developer tools and SDK to independent game companies to sell their titles to subscribers. This coming weekend, OnLive is holding an "Indie Fest," offering discounts of up to 75% on great indie games like World of Goo, Trine, and AaaaaAaaaAAAaaAAAAaAAAAA!!! We would like to know how offering indie games for cheap means you're supporting the developers, but it's cool -- we don't understand how the whole streaming things works so well either.
OnLive now working over Wi-Fi, announces 'Indie Fest' originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 15 Sep 2010 18:30:00 EST. Alas, the troubled tale of the Xbox 360 Wireless N Networking Adapter has reached a conclusion, albeit not the exact conclusion many (including Microsoft, no doubt) would have hoped. Nearly two months after first being caught in the public spotlight (thanks, FCC!) - and then casually confirmed, sans press release, price, or release date - the Xbox 360's second attempt at a this-should-really-be-built-in wireless networking adapter has found its way to some store shelves, apparently.

An Engadget reader snapped the above pic at UK-supermarket Asda where the adapter is evidently selling for £49, which converts to a (relatively speaking!) very reasonable $82. Of course, it's nowhere to be found on any major US retail sites and Microsoft is keeping mum so the cat-and-mouse game continues. Naturally, we've put (another) word into Microsoft and we'll let you know when they respond with the usual shrug.
Xbox 360 Wireless N adapter live in the UK, US release still a mystery originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 09 Nov 2009 14:30:00 EST. Late last week, we reported that Italian site MondoXbox had spotted an ad for an Xbox 360 802.11n adapter in the Gears of War 2 Game of the Year Edition box. Prior to that, the device was reviewed by the FCC. Speaking to Joystiq, Microsoft has confirmed that there is indeed such an adapter in the works. Unfortunately, the confirmation was accompanied by few actual details. Other than the fact that the adapter will allow gamers to "seamlessly connect with their home network with the highest wireless 'N' technology," we don't know anything about when it will release or, more importantly, how much it will cost.

Microsoft did refer to the device as "another choice to consumers," which lends credence to the belief that it will be marketed alongside the current Wi-Fi adapter, as opposed to replacing it altogether. Microsoft stated that more details will be available "soon" and advised us all to "stay tuned."
To be more specific -- and much less acronymic -- it appears that the super speedy Xbox 360 802.11n Wi-Fi adapter has been spotted on a promotional flier inside the Italian version of the Gears of War 2 Game of the Year edition. Italian gaming site Mondobox.com (translation) posted an image of the leaflet, which you can see above. Assuming it's authentic, it seems to indicate that both the original 802.11a/b/g and 802.11n adapter will continue to exist in the same market. And that, hopefully, indicates a price drop on the ridiculously overpriced original adapter.

We've contacted Microsoft about the peripheral and will update this post with new information if and when we receive it.
Rumor: 360 802.11n adapter spotted in GOW2 GOTY box originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 18 Sep 2009 17:20:00 EST. The IEEE recently standardized the 802.11n WiFi protocol, which has unofficially been appearing in consumer electronics products for over two years now. It seems that Microsoft is planning on keeping up with the times, as the Federal Communications Commission recently evaluated an "Xbox 360 Wireless N Networking Adapter" that adheres to the new WLAN standard. Using said protocol, this new adapter should afford users double the transfer speed they had using their previous dongles, and will also provide a massive boost in connection range to WiFi hotspots.

Of course, none of this matters if the thing costs $200 -- an estimate we arrived at using the "double the antennas, double the price" principle. We've contacted Microsoft for comment on the new hardware's due date and price point, and to find out if the new model effectively means we'll never, ever, ever see built-in WiFi for the 360.
The first moments of a new game can be awkward. Unless you're just tossed right in, which has its own problems, there's usually a bit of interfacing going on. Now imagine peering over someone else's shoulder as they fiddle around with that just-opened game. That's this video of Ragnarok Online DS, except it's longer than that sentence was.

So it's not the best quality, but if you want an actual view of what you'll be seeing (sort of; your view would be better) if this game ever makes it over, or if you import, this is your chance.

They've launched the Check Mii Out Channel, as well as the Everybody Votes Channel. Sure, they were flops, but it's good to know that Nintendo is at least trying. And Reggie wants us to know that Nintendo has some things coming down the pipe.

"Nintendo has always had a vision on community," he said. "The issue is that we define community differently than our competitors. ... Our consumers do want a sense of community, and we're going to deliver that--but in a way that is unique to Nintendo." Thanks for being so vague, Reg!

Regardless, it's good to know Nintendo is thinking about it. Stacked up against Xbox Live and, even worse, PSN, the Wii is lacking in some very necessary community features. Why don't you all take a guess? What do you think Nintendo has up its sleeve? Personally, we'd appreciate Virtual Console and WiiWare demos and maybe more online multiplayer.

[Via GameDaily; thanks, Mr Khan!]
Nintendo planning greater community features originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 19 Nov 2008 13:45:00 EST. Sony has already confirmed the PSP Wi-Fi store is coming this Fall for Japan. The official box art for a November 30 US PSP Brite (a.k.a. PSP-3000) bundle also shows store functionality (via Amazon), indicating that the fall launch will be global and just in time to keep yourself distracted during Thanksgiving dinner. It was previously rumored that the store would be coming with firmware 5.00.

In other PSP Brite news, the gang at Eurogamer spent the weekend with the upgraded handheld as well as firmware 4.20, featuring a Color Space option that, "If you set to [Wide], the system's display will appear more vivid."

[Via PSP Fanboy]
PSP Brite box art shows Wi-Fi Store originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 06 Oct 2008 13:30:00 EST. Compared to other services, online gaming for Nintendo fans is definitely lacking, but at least these days, we actually have a few games that are online. It's an improvement! Someone at Sony is trying way too hard. Can you believe an ambitious young stooge has dared to decipher the mysterious toggle on the left side of the PSP? And wouldn't you know, the thing's a Wi-Fi switch! Now all hell's broken loose at Sony HQ, as the discovery has ushered in a new era of brite possibilities for the handheld. Imagine: shopping for themes and wallpaper directly from your PSP. It's true folks, PlayStation Store is coming to PSP sans hand holding (so long PS3, so long PC!) this fall in Japan -- probably worldwide, PSP Fanboy speculates. And there's a free game in it for anyone smart enough to flick the "on" switch.

But that's not all. Sony has announced (and pictured) a new Infrastructure mode, enabled by connecting PSP to Playstation 3 ... wirelessly. In essence, ad-hoc multiplayer modes will become online-enabled through a PS3 connection for some games (like Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G). In addition, text and voice chatting capabilities can be added through the new online mode. Add to this the rumor of PS3 gamepad support for PSP Brite, and Sony might as well slap a UMD drive on the next PS3 SKU.

[Via PSP Fanboy]
PSP Wi-Fi Store to launch in fall, PS3 Infrastructure mode announced originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 02 Sep 2008 13:57:00 EST. Aside from learning about Balance Board support and when the game would be releasing on WiiWare, we haven't heard much about what's in the Tetris Party game. Well, other than Tetris. We all pretty much know what's going on with that.

We now have some idea as to what gamers should expect from the title's many modes of play, though. There will be 18 different modes of play, with 10 of them supposedly being never-before-seen variations of single and multiplayer Tetris. Online modes will be titled World Battle and Friend Battle, where up to six players can take part in play simultaneously.

Aside from all of that, other modes were mentioned, including Stage Racer, Wii Balance Board Tetris Marathon, Field Climber, and Duel Space modes. We don't have any specific info on those, though, so we'll just have to wait until the game releases to spend some quality time with those modes.

New info on Tetris Party's game modes originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 06 Aug 2008 14:39:00 EST. It's one of those games that's mystifying in its invisibility, the sort of thing that should be advertised until we desperately hunt down the remote just so we don't have to see that damned commercial again. Instead, it slipped by with nary a wave in the pool of DS games, and that's just criminal.

If you know a younger gamer who loved Nintendogs (or one of these people), this may be a surefire recommendation. Surprisingly, it's that good. But that seems to be par for the course when it comes to developer Amaze Entertainment -- who also worked on the GBA's incredible Spyro title last year. They take old franchises and licenses that no one seems to care about, and sometimes put out gems no one notices. Not all the time ... but when they're good, they're great. And for what it is, Disney Friends is pretty great.

Continue reading DS Fanboy Review: Disney Friends

DS Fanboy Review: Disney Friends originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 25 Jun 2008 11:00:00 EST. PSP owners should be familiar with Starbucks. For months, PSP owners were able to get free internet access at Starbucks throughout the country thanks to a deal between Sony and T-Mobile. Now that Starbucks has switched to AT&T as their wi-fi provider, how will PSP owners get free wi-fi on their systems?

Simple. Go to Starbucks. By registering any gift card on starbucks.com (they go low as $5), PSP owners can get free internet access on their PSP systems. The catch? It's only limited to two hours a day, and you have to use your card in some way (buy something, or add value to it) at least once every 30 days. For portable internet browsing on the go, these restrictions are pretty generous.

Once connected, PSP is able to browse the internet at quite a respectable speed. There is one glaring flaw, though. You won't be able to use the free wi-fi for anything but internet browsing. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear online gaming will work at a Starbucks wi-fi spot.
Getting free wi-fi at Starbucks originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 09 Jun 2008 20:30:00 EST. Hey, remember when McDonald's and Nintendo teamed up to offer free Wi-Fi access for Nintendo DS players? No? Really? We thought it was kinda cool. Anyway, they're not doing it anymore, so just forget it.

The contract between Nintendo and Wayport -- the internet provider for McDonald's in North America -- actually came to an end late last year, though the termination of the agreement wasn't made well known. Well, now you know. DS-playing Mickey D's lovers can still get their fast food game on using a laptop and Nintendo's Wi-Fi dongle. Or, you know, not.

[Via DS Fanboy]
Free DS Wi-Fi no more at McDonald's originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 29 May 2008 22:00:00 EST. Perhaps, say, a little blue circle indicating online play?

Yes, it's true, the Japanese version of We Love Golf doesn't support Wi-Fi. But, fortunately for us, Camelot made some changes to the game.

Nintendo Power recently confirmed with the developer that online play was added to the American and European versions, making us even more excited for this title. If anything could top playing Wiimote golf as one of our favorite Capcom attorneys, it'd be adding an online experience on top of that.
We Love Golf even more now that it supports online play originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 10 Mar 2008 16:00:00 EST. So your Wii has built in wi-fi to connect to the internet, but that doesn't mean everyone is down for that. Many of the fine folk cruising these tubes that make up the interweb still do so through trusty wires, perhaps too scared to enter the domain of wireless solutions available. Are you one of these individuals that had to snatch up a LAN adapter to get online or are you down with the wi-fi?
Wii Warm Up: wi-fi vs wired internets originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 27 Feb 2008 09:00:00 EST. Here's the good news:

Nintendo project leader Takashi Aoyama recently announced that Wii games would soon feature downloadable content. If you're unfamiliar with this service (which is currently prevalent in the other current-gen systems, the PS3 and Xbox 360), this means that you'll be able to download additional content for your games via Wi-Fi.

There's no word on what games will offer DLC (though we can make guesses on a few that will and won't), nor have we heard about potential memory limitations with the inclusion of this service. Add-ons will be available for both Wii Ware titles and disc-based games, though.

As per usual, Wii owners will be able to purchase such content with Wii Points or a credit card.

Now, are you ready for the bad news?
Continue reading GDC08: Wi-Fi good news, bad news

GDC08: Wi-Fi good news, bad news originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 22 Feb 2008 15:30:00 EST.
There's a vicious rumor currently circulating on a number of message boards that the Australian version of Medal of Honor: Heroes 2 is shipping without online functionality of any description. Frankly, we're confused, not to mention a little bit worried for our fellow Wii owners down under.

At the time of writing, EA has yet to respond to our request for clarification.

[Thanks, Peter!]
Rumor: Aussie Medal of Honor: Heroes 2 missing online functionality originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 07 Feb 2008 14:15:00 EST.
Of all the new features Brawl will bring to the Smash Bros. table, the ability to fight opponents online is arguably the most eagerly anticipated. Still, some might argue that Nintendo just ain't that great at this online malarkey, and that Brawl's Wi-Fi mode could be a big, fat fly in an otherwise quite lovely tub of ointment.

Director Masahiro Sakurai is clearly aware of these concerns, because today's dojo update features footage of an online scrap between Nintendo's headquarters in Kyoto and the development team in Tokyo -- apparently, this is pretty close to the distance between Las Vegas and Los Angeles, which Google Maps tells us is 435 kilometers, or 270 miles. The resulting four-man online brawl looks buttery-smooth and fills us with hope.

With five minutes of gameplay in this video, we're able to get a lot of practice-losing in.

We already know that we have no chance against the legions of Smash-obsessed teens who will be online day and night, so we're going to try to be the best at being totally dejected about our losses.
It's a depressing fact that cheating will always be a part of online gaming, regardless of your platform of choice. For some time, those of weak moral fiber have been able to grant themselves infinite energy, infinite ammo, and the ability to levitate in Metroid Prime: Hunters (encouragingly, Nintendo claims it is now taking measures to prevent this), while the whole Mario Kart DS/snaking debate has rumbled on for some time (though we know of at least one Nintendo representative who would argue that the method isn't actually cheating, and we're sure many of you would concur).

Today, we'd like to hear about some of your own experiences of cheating opponents. Which games do you find attract the most online cheats, and have any of you indulged in this dark art yourselves?
DS Daily: Cheating originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 20 Jan 2008 10:30:00 EST. As it turns out, they have another interesting homebrew application called Sniff Jazzbox. Instead of turning wireless signals into enemies, though, it turns them into musical notes (or rather, it turns the names of the hot spots it picks up into musical notes). In a sense, it allows you to hear what your environment sounds like.

Sniff Jazzbox definitely can't be considered a game, and the music it produces is just a bunch of notes jumbled together, but we like how and-or is integrating adaptable wireless aspects into their programs. The game changes and adapts based on the player's location, environment, and position. As these factors change, Wardive creates different levels based on the new data. We're not sure if the gameplay is any good, and the game may be a little too experimental, but the concept is certainly impressive.

You can read about and download the game here. The game's Wikipedia page is absolutely barren, while a release date has only just appeared (January 18th), and then only for Europe. Despite the lack of information, Nintendo obviously reckons this could have broad appeal, as it's slapped the "Touch! Generations" logo on the corner of the box, which roughly translates as: "Your Gran and her friends will like this."

Anyway, further details finally emerged on the title today, with CVG reporting that Wii Chess is to retail for a budget price of £20 / €30 (we'd presume the game's budget status will be preserved if and when it reaches other markets -- our educated guess would be $30 for the U.S.), and that it will support both local multiplayer and games played over Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. We're also promised a number of graphical styles, which hopefully means Nintendo-themed boards and pieces, including Goomba pawns and knights that look like Yoshi.

And yes, that is the German boxart. We travelled the seven seas of the internet searching for an English version, but returned empty-handed. Still, at least you now know the German word for "chess." Never know when that might come in handy.
New details on Wii Chess remind us that the game exists originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 12 Dec 2007 11:15:00 EST. In a recent Wall Street Journal article, Nintendo execs mentioned practical, wireless content for use in "train stations, amusement parks or museums" (where have we seen that before?). There was also mention of a television-programming feature for Japan that would allow users to check listings and plan out their viewing schedule. We can't help but wonder if it's related to that TV tuner that recently resurfaced, since it sure sounds like it.

Personally, we welcome our new DS overlords in every part of our daily lives -- if Nintendo can manage something a little classier (and more common) than the Nintendo Fan Network that debuted at Safeco Field this year. The DS has a lot of useful functions that can certainly be exploited for more practical uses, and we already carry one around, so we hope some of these make it over to our side of the ocean.

[Via Engadget]
Iwata says: more features, expanded audience for DS originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 30 Oct 2007 15:40:00 EST. But we're going to offer some restrictions on this, however. You know we don't like simple answers. Let's forget a lot of the games that are more popular, particularly at our weekly Game Night, and instead tout some that people may not know as much about. Instead of talking about Pokémon and Mario Kart, tell us about Worms or something else. Online or not -- no limits there -- so long as the game is (in your opinion) a little less well-known!
DS Daily: Better with more originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 23 Oct 2007 09:00:00 EST. Yesterday's Game Night was one that I ended up not participating in. I showed up, then something came up and I was away from my laptop for the majority of the time. For that, I apologize. All of you new folk who showed up, please understand that is not a usual thing for me. I just wanted to let you all know I feel pretty guilty about it.

Hit up the poll below (new and improved!) and let's get the ball rolling toward next week's session.

View Poll

DS Fanboy presents: Game Night 10/18/07 aftermath originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 19 Oct 2007 10:40:00 EST. Oh, you have no idea what a relief it is that it's Thursday. We've been waiting for this since ... well, since last Thursday. (DR? What?) Days of Ruin marks the bleak setting and style for the latest version of this turn-based strategy game.

The plucky Advance Wars characters have been retired in favor of an all-new, more tempered cast. And while this is still a Nintendo game -- don't expect anything too edgy -- the company anticipates it'll earn a T-rating for the game's language and tone. The plot is about a more serious, war-decimated planet, after all.

More than just the setting, this Advance Wars was described as an Intelligent Systems relaunch of the series. CO powers have been reduced; don't expect them to let a losing side suddenly win the game. And the dual-screen gameplay from the previous DS version has been removed; the top screen shows dedicated battle info, while the bottom screen shows the game area.

We recently played a few levels of the new title, and we're looking forward to an Advance Wars game again. We never liked the dual-screen battles, and the CO powers seemed to have gotten out of control in the previous version. Days of Ruin felt like a much needed course-correction for the series. Features like Wi-Fi play with voice chat, and map creation and sharing, remake the title while keeping its addictive strategy gameplay.
Following up the first Game Night where we could take advantage of the wi-fi compatibility for The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, we understand that the next week might seem a little less exciting by comparison. But, keep in mind that once you're on our list, you're there to stay. Unless the people don't like you, but that game is not in danger of having that happen to it.

Hit up the poll below to decide what next week's theme game should be.

We added a new game to the poll last week and, sure enough, you all voted for it. And, considering it stars a certain green-clad youth, we're certain that the majority of you attending this evening will have the game in-hand, ready to go. If you're new to the whole Game Night thing, then head past the break and get the info you need.
Continue reading DS Fanboy presents: Game Night 10/11/07

DS Fanboy presents: Game Night 10/11/07 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 11 Oct 2007 10:40:00 EST. By now, we should have learned never to expect online multiplayer, or really, any online capabilities at all in Wii games, and yet still we hope. Is an online tennis-type sports game too much to ask for? Apparently, yes; Rockstar has confirmed that their Wii version of Table Tennis will not feature online multiplayer.

So what gives? Why is Rockstar's Table Tennis port lacking the online mode that graced Xbox Live? "All the focus is going into making it the most advanced control system on the Wii," said Rockstar reps, in what has to be the most disappointing explanation of the month. It's not like the two are mutually exclusive. The real question here is who's at fault -- Nintendo or Rockstar? -- but we may never know if it's the Wii's basic online infrastructure or lazy developers looking to put out ports as quickly as possible and using controls and "family-oriented" play as an excuse to avoid extra work.

The upcoming Top Spin Tennis doesn't look like it's set to feature online play, either; every time we see the game mentioned, the focus is on that "family-oriented" play, which, in our experiences, means forget connecting with anyone outside your home. We may be waiting a long time to take some sort of tennis or table tennis game online at this rate.

No surprise: online not included in Table Tennis originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 24 Sep 2007 18:10:00 EST.
