Alyse isn't just your usual Legend of Zelda fan -- aside from the drawer full of Link-themed clothing and decorative Majora's Mask cup set sitting in her cupboard, she's now also the proud owner of the gigantic Lego mosaic you see above. The product of her brow's sweat and her hand's work, the mosaic was created for Brickcon, an annual event that celebrates adult Lego hobbyists.

Head on over to her Flickr account for shots of the impressive feat throughout its development (the above shot is of her husband, Remi, and the Lego computer case he built), something Alyse documented because she "was inspired by many of the stained glass artwork from Wind Waker." If we had enough patience to do something like this, we probably wouldn't have jobs on the internet.
Only an utterly clueless fanboy will ignore Shigeru Miyamoto's contributions to gaming, and any Nintendo enthusiast can never deny the quality of a series like Halo or God of War. No matter the platform, there are games which make up the foundation of this medium as we've come to know it.

Traditionally, the formula would seem to be game made by a respectable company + a few years to let it sink in = indisputable classic. Yet there are a few that still provoke debate.

These are games that are neither universally adored nor hated. They almost always spark conversation, and are considered by some to be an acquired taste. Here are the Top 5 games that we all can't decide if they're classics or not.

If we wrote about every fan-made cover of Nintendo theme songs that slid across our <strike>desks</strike> inboxes, we'd find ourselves with little time to write about all the hard-hitting news that you crave. However, we think it would be irresponsible to not pass along this incredible rendition of the opening theme to Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, largely due to the fact that its exponentially better than the original.

The acoustic cover, which is posted after the break, was performed by YouTube composer Fredrik Larsson -- and only YouTube composer Fredrik Larsson. Through the magic of non-linear editing, Freddy pools his musical talents to piece together an incredible tribute to one of Nintendo's unsung themes. We suggest having Link's oceanic adventure on-hand should you decide to check the video out -- trust us, you'll feel compelled to revisit it.

[Thanks, Chris.]
Continue reading One-man band covers Wind Waker theme

One-man band covers Wind Waker theme originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 27 Dec 2008 14:00:00 EST. Indeed, I can't help but think that just one of the awesome titles announced in the past week could have prevented much of the animosity hurled at Nintendo following their ho-hum presentation at the summer exhibition.

But then again, Nintendo has always been one to surprise us. They've made good moves and bad, interesting decisions coupled with utterly clueless assumptions, and made us wonder what the hell they were thinking while amazing us with what they're capable of. Here's the Top 5 biggest surprises unleashed by the Big N.

We hate to sound like your mother, Mr. I-Can-Mod-a-GameCube, but your fingernails (well, one nail, on your thumb) look pretty dirty. In fact, the unit itself looks like it could use a good cleaning as well. And, those vents look like they were made with a ballpoint pen in some Styrofoam.

But, we don't want to be too harsh. Because, and we'll be perfectly honest, we wouldn't ever be able to get past the first stage of creating a portable gaming system: unplugging the console and hacking it apart. We'd probably just pop in Twin Snakes, sit down and forget about the mod altogether.
Portable GameCube needs more work, shows promise originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 15 Jan 2008 18:00:00 EST. Yet, how many of us can boast that we've beaten those four games in 48 straight hours? Probably none.

Cameron Banga and his friends will soon have that right, though. They've made it their mission to not only trek through the four 3D Zelda games, but beat them in a 48 hour deadline (which expires tomorrow at 5PM CST). They are also showing their exploits to the world by webcasting the event here.

So, are these guys gods among men or just in need of a new hobby? It's up to you to decide.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]
Forty-eight hours of Zelda originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 12 Jan 2008 16:00:00 EST. Okay, that's it. We're done. From now on, gamer weddings just don't matter. They're empty, soulless shells next to this. Sure, Tetris cakes are awesome, and Zelda ice sculptures are cool as, well, ice, but this one takes the cake -- literally. This Wind Waker-inspired wedding cake is a work of art. We're pretty sure we wouldn't even be able to cut it, much less eat it ... in fact, we would need to create some sort of force field technology to preserve this thing until the end times. Bounce on over to Kotaku if you want to see the top in detail, and weep that you do not have such an item preserved on a high shelf in your home.

Unless you do. In which case, we want it.
Zelda Week: Possibly the best gaming cake ever originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 05 Oct 2007 14:40:00 EST.
