Developer Gazillion and Marvel have been showing off some superheroes for the coming MMO Marvel Universe Online, and with the inclusion of Iron Man, we think it's about time you took a good look at these guys. So far, the MMMSociety has released renders of Deadpool, Wolverine, Cable, Captain America, Thor, Thing and Iron Man, all in fairly traditional spandex and ironclad garb. Iron Man, for example, looks a bit like Robert Downey Jr. under that sleek armor design -- trust us, we would know that rear end anywhere.
We realize some people have fantasies and, thanks to the internet, they have an outlet. But some things are so sacred, so untouchable, that they should never be tampered with. We bring this up because this list of ten crazy, unauthorized fighting game mash-ups created with M.U.G.E.N. is just plain disturbing.

Never would we have wanted to see Homer and Peter Griffin team up to battle Scorpion and Sub-Zero -- both teams are mortal enemies! Nor would we have wished to see Wolverine take on Mike Tyson or Ronald McDonald and Colonel Sanders throw down against Ryu and M. Bison. We're all for enemies putting aside their differences and finding friendship, but it's really skewing our sense of right and wrong here, guys!
Fight your sense of right and wrong with these 10 odd mash-ups originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 24 Aug 2010 03:00:00 EST. Capcom has finally released some in-game shots of Marvel vs Capcom 3. The screens are missing HUD elements, but that's fine -- we just wanted to see how the game would "blur the line between 2D and 3D graphics." Frankly, we're surprised it doesn't look more like Super Street Fighter IV. And not a single curleh mustache in sight? How will the fans react?

Head into our gallery below to check out the new screens, which feature a Ryu vs Wolverine match-up, Iron Man shooting Morrigan in the face and a trigger-happy Chris Redfield taking on The Hulk.
If there's one thing that Commander Shepard, Nathan Drake, Agent 47, Marcus Fenix, and ... uhh ... Mega Man all have in common, it's not just that they're all video game characters -- they're also all white dudes. And Raven Software's Manveer Heir takes umbrage with that fact (and, more importantly, the fact that being caucasian is a rather pervasive theme across game characters), telling Develop in a recent interview that "There are a large number of hispanic and black children playing games, percentage-wise more so than white children, but these guys aren't getting into the industry because they are not seeing themselves in the games."

Moreover, Heir says it's not just a question of equality, but rather a question of missed market opportunity. "It's not about being fair. It's about bringing something new to the art." The Wolverine/Singularity dev also makes a point of sending out a rally call to the rest of the industry, saying, "I'm sure many people in the game industry are starting work on new IP. If we can ask people to think about it, then they are more apt to say 'hey let's try this.' You just need one game to succeed. The first developer or publisher to do this will enjoy a lot of success." For a much more thorough discussion on the subject, we've embedded a video after the break of a panel from DICE 2010, titled "Games of Color," in which Manveer speaks in far more detail on the subject.
Continue reading Raven's Manveer Heir urges industry to address ethnic misrepresentation

Raven's Manveer Heir urges industry to address ethnic misrepresentation originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 06 Mar 2010 11:30:00 EST. Well folks, we've been here twice before -- it's that very special time of year when the Writers Guild of America announces nominations in the category of "Videogame Writing." As has been the standard for the past two years, the list of games is a dubious mix. We'd certainly point to Naughty Dog's Uncharted 2 (our 2009 Game of the Year, lest you forget) and Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed 2 as worthy of the title, but ... well, nearly everything else on the list strikes us as either unworthy or straight up misplaced. It reads as follows:

Assassin's Creed 2

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

Wet

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

We're just as flummoxed as you are that titles like Wolverine and Modern Warfare 2 showed up -- especially while a litany of other great writing falls by the wayside (we're looking at you, Dragon Age and Professor Layton 2) -- but that might have something to do with the WGA membership requirement for consideration in the nominations. Regardless, we'll find out who's going to take the golden manuscript home when the show takes place simultaneously in both Los Angeles and New York City on February 20.
Red Faction: Guerrilla
Arriving approximately seven months late to the party, I didn't play RFG until earlier this month when I desperately cobbled together 2009's game releases for a massive pre-GOTY playstravaganza. That marathon came to a long pause while I smashed through the many structures of Mars with my trusty sledgehammer, constantly hearing "Space A$&%*#&" playing along the way in my mind. Sure, RFG was a bit rough around the edges, but what it lacked in mechanical prowess was more than made up for by the sheer amount of childlike joy I experienced while demolishing everything in my path.
Continue reading Best of the Rest: Ben's Picks of 2009

Best of the Rest: Ben's Picks of 2009 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 01 Jan 2010 16:30:00 EST. Okay, we'll admit that this is one of the cooler items you can wear in PlayStation Home: Wolverine's adamantium claws. Best of all, you can don these shredders for free. Yes, you'll have to suffer through the trailer for X-Men Origins; Wolverine at the Home Theatre -- but once the painful two minutes are over, you'll find these claws waiting for you in the Threads store of the Home Mall.

Unfortunately, these are non-functional weapons. We so would've loved to go on a virtual rampage in Home. Also, this is strictly a European affair. Sorry, everyone else.

[Via Kotaku]
Europeans, get Wolverine claws in PlayStation Home originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 09 Oct 2009 19:00:00 EST. What does the future of Marvel video games hold? According to the aptly titled "The Next Generation of Marvel Video Games" panel at San Diego Comic Con, the future holds ... LittleBigPlanet costumes! Kotaku nabbed pictures of concept art for three different superheroic costumes that were previewed: Captain America, who is pictured above, and Wolverine and Iron Man, who can be viewed after the jump.

Marvel was non-committal about when the costume pack would be released, or even whether these three heroes would be the ones that would receive the DLC treatment. We've contacted Media Molecule to try and discern some concrete details. Personally, we've got our stuffed burlap fingers crossed for an appearance by Howard the Duck.
Continue reading Adorable Marvel superheroes coming to LittleBigPlanet

Adorable Marvel superheroes coming to LittleBigPlanet originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 26 Jul 2009 21:30:00 EST. Admittedly, the commercial is actually kind of cool. It reminds us a bit of Neill Blomkamp's Halo 3 shorts, and we particularly dig its first-person grittiness.

There is, however, one fatal flaw. Why on earth would Wolverine bash his way out of a cage? We know Wolvy's got some rage issues, but you'd think he'd have the presence of mind to use his claws to cut open the cage instead of ramming it. It would save time, time that could be spent dismembering people. Come on, Activision, details matter.
Wolverine commercial has glaring error originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 07 May 2009 02:00:00 EST. One thousand three hundred and fifty five people: murdered. Okay, some of them were unfeeling killer robots, but even after eliminating every piece of scrap metal from the virtual cemetery, you're left with a considerable number of motionless bodies by the end of X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Or at least things that, when reassembled, vaguely resemble bodies.

Wolverine is a game that exudes excess and revels in recklessness. The design mirrors that of its protagonist, an unhinged brute who lops off limbs, tears apart helicopters and frequently howls at the camera. Oh, and he apparently has a lot of fun, too. Like God of War and its ilk, Wolverine is at its best when it feels like all limitations have been dissolved, along with any possibility of you succumbing to a mere army of opponents. Even distance becomes an ex-factor, with an always satisfying lunge maneuver planting you in someone's chest before they can do something futile -- like shooting you.
Remember how when you saw the Wolverine movie yesterday, and it was at the part where Wolverine was all like "Rawrrgh! I'm going to cut on you!" and you thought that dialogue seemed pretty familiar? You may have heard that exact same line in X-Men Origins: Wolverine: The Game -- in a recent interview with Yahoo, Aussie hunk extraordinaire Hugh Jackman admitted he "was able to bring some of the lines of dialogue from the game script into the movie." Thief! Vagabond! Scoundrel!

However, since the general consensus we've heard says the game is better than the flick, perhaps this scurrilous Outbacker's shameless line thievery isn't such a bad thing.

[Via GoNintendo]
Wolverine movie borrowed lines from Wolverine game originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 04 May 2009 13:30:00 EST. In an uncharacteristic move, Logan has snuck his way onto the European PSN Store today with nary a severed limb or exposed jugular to be seen. The hiariously violent, and surprisingly good, X-Men Origins: Wolverine demo arrives a day late, but late is better than never. It's still missing from the US Store and, we suspect, will be until the next update on Thursday. In the meantime, American PS3 owners with European accounts -- you know what to do.
It appears the demo for X-Men Origins: Wolverine is available now on Xbox 360. Go experience the thrills of watching Wolverine cut bad guys into meaty chunks and shove them head-first into ... well, you'll see. Don't be fooled, gamer parents out there: Activision may have the PG-13 rated movie's title on the box, but this game is certainly rated Mature and likely not suitable for the kiddies. Definitely take Wolverine for a test drive if you're up for an intense God of War experience set in the Marvel universe.
Wolverine demo available now on Xbox 360 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 30 Apr 2009 23:00:00 EST. Here's yet another reason to go Home. At 8PM PST (11PM EST) tonight, PlayStation Home will feature an exclusive clip from the upcoming movie, X-Men Origins: Wolverine. All you have to do is stop by the virtual theater any time this weekend and you'll be able to check out this Home-exclusive clip. It's not a megaton, but so long as Sony continues securing these small incentives to log on, we'll be visiting Home more and more often.
PlayStation Home to feature exclusive X-Men Origins: Wolverine clip originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 24 Apr 2009 17:00:00 EST. The developers behind X-Men Origins: Wolverine have been an outspoken bunch. In its latest dev diary, Raven Software discusses the settings for conflicts that shaped our little feral boy into the 'bub'-spewing man of today. We can sympathize, guys. While Logan is in the spotlight, taking down helicopters like he's 50 Cent or something, nobody will pay much attention to the detail of the forest around him. That mantra is very simple: It's only a licensed game. Just say it over and over again. It's only a licensed game. It's only a licensed game. It won't be any good.

Keep repeating that while watching the video above, which focuses on the game's story, particularly that of Sabretooth. In the upcoming film, Sabretooth is actually portrayed as Wolverine's brother, which makes for some ... interesting family dynamics. The video also takes a quick look at both Gambit and The Blob. Because we're going to be straight with you, when ... well, when that last thing happens in this new trailer for X-Men Origins: Wolverine, our fists pumped above our heads of their own accord. It was like they had fist-minds of their own.

Though we've seen other trailers that were graphically slicker, we appreciate that Activision's using a lot of in-game footage here. If we get to ride The Blob through a grocery store in-game, we need to be excused to make a reservation.
See Wolverine battle Gambit in new X-Men Origins trailer originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 14 Apr 2009 16:30:00 EST. The latest behind-the-scenes video goes a step further than just claiming that the title will be the best Wolverine game ever made, Raven actually calls out all other games. Senior Producer Jeff Poffenbarger lays it on the line at the end of the video saying, "Every other game is like ... some pansy."
Oh, no he didn't. Watch the video and see just what Raven is talking about. And we liked it.

We've now played a near final version -- once again starting out in the jungle -- and, well, we still like it. Luckily we got to see a lot more of what players are in for and found that, while Kratos probably has grounds for a civil suit, there are definitely plenty of unique elements to help Wolverine's adventure stand on its own.
Included in these promises are reminders of the title's feral protagonist's badassedness (the frequent use of this adjective might make the video NSFW, if you work at like, a monastery or something), and a solemn vow that Wolverine will be "the movie game that finally does not suck." The dev team behind Street Fighter: The Movie: The Game begs to differ.

If developer boasting isn't your cup of tea, the video also provides some nice gameplay footage from the title. However, this footage could leave you worried about Logan's mental health -- we're fairly sure wielding knuckle cutlery whilst traversing a rope bridge isn't the safest way to get around.
X-Men Origins: Wolverine dev diary promises game 'does not suck' originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 02 Apr 2009 17:50:00 EST. You are too much for us GameStop, you sonuva ... We wish we knew how to quit you! We swore, the last time was "the last time," but now here you are offering the most awesome-sounding DLC bonus of all time: The Dismemberment Room. And all we have to do is lay down five bucks toward X-Men Origins: Wolverine and it's ours -- all ours?! Fine, you win. But, for real, this is really: The. Last. Time.

The Wolverine GameStop pre-order bonus includes four "exclusive" in-game rooms (and is exclusive to the "Uncaged Edition" for PS3 and Xbox 360, at that). The rooms are separate from the main game, contained within a mysterious laboratory, the Weapon X Area. Players are loaded into a hallway with access to each room. He's fast, strong, mean [Get a room! - Ed] ... and he has an adamantium skeleton complete with kick-ass adamantium claws. Judging by the latest trailer for X-Men Origins: Wolverine, if the game is even half as good as it looks -- which seems to be the case, incidentally -- we're in for a treat. There is no stealth here. There is only running, jumping and killing. Even better, it appears that the running and jumping are there purely to facilitate the killing.
Oh, and Wolverine deflects a rocket with his claws. With. His. Claws. Imagine this: Wolverine, body riddled with bullets, climbs atop a helicopter. He bursts through the window, grabs the pilot and lifts the body up to the rotors. The pilot's head gets shredded apart.

Welcome to X-Men Origins: Wolverine. One could talk about the various nuances of its gameplay, but overwhelmingly only one aspect of the game truly stands out: it's violent. Really, really violent.

It shouldn't be surprising that X-Men Origins is so bloody. It is, in fact, about a man who has deadly claws coming out of his hands. For too long, the big-budget Hollywood movies and video games have presented a neutered Wolverine. X-Men Origins: Wolverine wants to tell the story of a man who's very, very angry at those that created him -- a weapon of war.
"How come I can't ever just grab a guy and rip him in half?" When X-Men Origins: Wolverine Project Lead, Dan Vondrak, asked why Wolverine had been gimped in every other game he starred in, we got the sneaking suspicion that someone finally "got it." Wolverine is a badass, and this debut CG trailer slowly makes us believe that maybe, just maybe, he will finally get the game we all know he deserves. Check out the trailer after the break.
Continue reading Snikt! VONDRAK. I've read reviews of Wolverine games, I've played previous X-Men games, and you just hate it when you're like, 'This isn't what it's supposed to be like to fight this guy. I'm Wolverine. How come I can't ever just grab a guy and rip him in half?' Yeah, absolutely -- let's do that. Nothing's holding us back.

Today, Activision pulled back the developer curtain on their latest X-men title, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, informing us what it'll be about, showing off a snazzy screenshot and announcing its May 2009 release.

The Raven Studios developed Origins will slice up retail shelves to coincide with the release of the feature length movie of the same name (yup, it's a movie based game) where gamers will get to experience the "tormented origins of Wolverine, from his escape of the Weapon X facility to the jungles of Africa and beyond." We also can deduce from the lone screenshot that our in-game Wolverine will mirror the suave looks of Mr. Hugh Jackman and his hair gel rich 'do.
OK, so you can color us confused. The end of the stunningly rad Spider-Man: Web of Shadows trailer we've put right after the jump seems to end with a glimpse of an alien symbiote bonded with lovable gruffster Wolverine. But we could have sworn the last time that happened the symbiote was forced out by Logan's mutant healing factor. Are we alone here?

OK, niggling continuity issues aside, if the combat is half as cool in Shaba's game as this video makes it look, we could finally be in for a game where we feel like the Webhead both when we're spinning webs any size and catching thieves just like flies. And we can't wait.
Continue reading See symbiote Wolverine in Spider-Man: Web of Shadows

See symbiote Wolverine in Spider-Man: Web of Shadows originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 28 Jul 2008 14:30:00 EST. There's no Incredible Hulk (he's in Vivendi's game), but just about everyone else from the House of Ideas makes an appearance, which amounts to at least 20 playable characters on each platform. Where Ultimate Alliance really shines over Justice League Heroes is in the stronger focus on teamwork, not to mention a more impressive cast of villains. <Your team name here>, assemble!

Game Informer (93/100) likes the new transparent rejuvenation system: "In this game, you no longer need to stock potions. When an enemy is slain, there's a chance that the fallen will gift you with a cluster of healing orbs that automatically zoom to your character. This change not only removes the clunky system of healing, it makes you feel more like a hero. Your focus is always on the battlefield, not a meter."

GamePro (90/100) appreciates the challenging enemy AI: "The major boss battles are head and shoulders above anything you've seen in the past. The roster of villains changes with such frequency that you never get a chance to get sick of them. Stronger ones boast talents like healing and immunity to certain attacks, while others carry shields that force your active crew of four to work as a team."

TeamXbox (88/100) was dazzled by the production quality: "The opening cinematic by Blur Studios is perhaps the finest I have witnessed in a videogame...but it's worth mentioning that the in-game footage cut scenes by Raven are no slouches either. Raven's in-game work is really nice too. Characters all have that comic book look, but have been updated to have their own edge. The backgrounds are just as sweet, flexing a bunch of post-production effects and lots of animations."

Returning to Activision in search of something that would allow us to shed our daily mundane identities and to become heroes that weren't dressed in fatigues, we encountered our friend the receptionist again, still holding a grudge from our earlier victory. She led us into a dark room that had the villainous look of a secret lair. We had entered the realm of Marvel: Ultimate Alliance.

The green glow of Xbox 360 rings of light around the room looked like laser-activated booby traps, but we managed to evade them and press on. After a short briefing we were off to hand pick our four fellow heroes. You pick from tons of playable characters, although some of them are unlocked as you explore areas and find more heroes. Putting The Thing, Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman, and the Human Torch on our team got us a Fantastic Four bonus (it was a no-brainer, we admit it), but we couldn't figure out any of the other combinations. We spied Deadpool and Spider-Woman on the Wii version -- which are probably the two unique characters that only the next-gen systems will be serving up. There is an extremely Nick Fury-esque shoulder holster on one of the silhouetted locked characters, and our fingers are itching to play the cigar-chomping, insult-hurling leader of the Howling Commandos.
Continue reading Joystiq hands-on: Marvel: Ultimate Alliance

Joystiq hands-on: Marvel: Ultimate Alliance originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 11 Oct 2006 09:57:00 EST. Paul discussed the creative process he and Marvel games writer C. B. Cebulski used to craft the Alliance plot, and also talked about how the reworked X-Men Legends technology allows for a greater range of combat moves. Look for alternate costumes and unique gameplay with the Wii controller when Alliance ships in October.
Ultimate Alliance producer interviewed originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 18 Aug 2006 18:00:00 EST.
