At the time of THQ's bankruptcy filing in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/12/19/thq-bankruptcy-sale/">December 2012</a>, it owed approximately $7.6 million to WWE for marketing and royalties expenses, as well as $15 million to $20 million to Yuke's.<br /><br />According to the statement, THQ, WWE and Yuke's all signed termination agreements on February 12, 2013 that relieved THQ of responsibility in paying WWE and Yuke's of those claims. THQ agreed to pay WWE royalties for sales of WWE games during its Chapter 11 case, and will also pay Yuke's $250,000 in settlement for royalties from sales during the time of its bankruptcy filing.<br /><br />As a result, WWE and Yuke's terminated existing contracts with THQ in order to pursue a publishing agreement for future WWE games with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/20/take-two-officially-takes-over-wwe-license-wwe-2k14-coming-in-f/">Take-Two</a>. Damage claims against THQ that were eliminated as a result of the termination agreement "may have exceeded $60 million," according to the document.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/20/thq-owed-wwe-7-6-million-disclosure-statement-reveals/">THQ owed WWE $7.6 million, disclosure statement reveals</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 20 Apr 2013 16:30:00 EST. Casey Collins, Executive Vice President of Consumer Products, announced the news (via <a href="http://www.pastapadre.com/2013/04/06/wwe-2k14-cover-goes-to-the-rock">Pasta Padre</a>) prior to this past weekend's Wrestlemania 29 event, where The Rock lost his championship belt against John Cena. Don't worry, we're sure he'll get it back in time to promote the game later this year.<br /><br />The WWE license was held by THQ for years, up until <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/12/31/events-2012-thqs-collapse/">the company's collapse</a> late last year. THQ then proceeded to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/01/23/thq-bid-winners-prices-and-runners-up/">auction off its assets</a>, with Take-Two securing the WWE license and placing it under its 2K Sports banner. <em>WWE 2K14</em> is due this fall.<br /><br /><strong>Update:</strong> We followed up with 2K Sports to confirm what this game is actually called. The <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/20/take-two-officially-takes-over-wwe-license-wwe-2k14-coming-in-f/">original announcement</a> by Take-Two called it "WWE '14," but Joystiq has confirmed with 2K Sports that the game will indeed be called <em>WWE 2K14</em>. All references to the game in this post have been updated with the correct title.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/09/wwe-14-taps-the-rock-for-cover-spot/">WWE 2K14 taps The Rock for cover spot</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 09 Apr 2013 15:50:00 EST. THQ has since become no more, forced to </span><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/01/24/court-approves-thq-asset-sales/">sell off all its assets</a><span> to the highest bidder - but before that silent auction, THQ and WWE got together to hold private bidding for the license. According to Collins, Take-Two was the right fit, a publisher he sees as "a leader going forward on these next-gen systems."<br /><br />Not only that, but Take-Two's success with the <em>NBA 2K</em> series also spurred interest, Collins said. "The work they do, and the quality of the games they put out and how they've been able to grow their franchise with not only the simulation aspect of the game, but also the entertainment aspect, we thought they'd be a perfect partner."<br /><br /><em>WWE '14</em> will launch this fall, a joint collaboration between 2K Sports studio Visual Concepts and longtime WWE series developer Yukes, located in Japan. As part of this five-year deal, Take-Two has also hired on some designers from THQ to work with Visual Concepts. "What we're going to do moving forward is meld Yukes with the team at Visual Concepts, so we can have the best of both worlds," Collins said. "Having Yukes' experience and then getting the Visual Concepts guys on board with them, we think this is going to be a dynamic duo."<br /><br />Collins confirmed that folks from THQ's "Fight Team" were being hired at Take-Two to help Visual Concepts with the transition. "The THQ Fight Team is also being brought over, and they'll report directly to Visual Concepts. Their experience in the marketing, their experience in the development, their experience with our franchise for years ... we thought that it was very valuable to keep that continuity."<br /><br />[Note: Image taken from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/wwe-13"><em>WWE '13</em></a>, but you probably knew that because it says WWE '13 right on the image. </span><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/20/take-two-officially-takes-over-wwe-license-wwe-2k14-coming-in-f/">Take-Two officially takes over WWE license, WWE '14 coming in fall</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 20 Feb 2013 15:45:00 EST. Devoted fans know the nuances of some of the biggest moments in the business' history well, from the formation of the Brothers of Destruction to Stone Cold Steve Austin soaking Vince McMahon in beer. A video game that dives into the rich history of the WWE is forced to reconcile all the details of the entertainment product. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/wwe-13"><em>WWE 13</em></a> often meets those expectations, but is not the best there is, was, or ever will be.<br /><br />Much like past games, <em>WWE 13</em> continues to push the illusion of wrestling, which is perfectly acceptable. It's a combat game with fighting mechanics, and some of those mechanics have been cleaned up since last year. One-button reversals now have an added indicator to tell you if your trigger finger is too fast or too slow (based on the small window to execute reversals, it often is). The "OMG" moments addition provide spectacular, albeit circumstantial events that can turn the tide of matches - things like trucking an opponent through the outside barrier by the crowd or heavier opponents actually causing the ring to collapse. Aside from these improvements, the in-ring action hasn't seen much change; players seem to transition a little more smoothly between moves, and most of the buggy, "jarring" animations in <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/wwe-12"><em>WWE 12</em></a> were cleaned up. Wrestling feels largely the same in this game, just a touch more fluid.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/wwe-13-10-4-12/">WWE '13 (10/4/12)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/wwe-13-10-4-12/#5337037"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/10/wwe13-7408aj1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/wwe-13-10-4-12/#5337038"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/10/wwe13-7409antoniocesaro1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/wwe-13-10-4-12/#5337039"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/10/wwe13-7410antoniocesaro2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/wwe-13-10-4-12/#5337040"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/10/wwe13-7411brianpillman1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/wwe-13-10-4-12/#5337041"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/10/wwe13-7412cenatitle1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/11/05/wwe-13-review/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>WWE 13 review: Gimme a hell yeah</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/11/05/wwe-13-review/">WWE 13 review: Gimme a hell yeah</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 05 Nov 2012 19:00:00 EST. The new "WWE Wrestlefest" has smoother graphics and an updated roster of wrestlers (a rostler, if you will) including John Cena and Randy Orton, alongside old-school wrestlers like the late "Macho Man" Randy Savage. It's also been modernized with "an extensive downloadable content program."<br /><br />The app is available in a free <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WWF_WrestleFest">"Lite" version</a> and a $2.99 <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/wrestlefest-premium/id494120526?mt=8&amp;ign-mpt=uo%3D4">"Premium" version</a> for iPhone, and both <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/wrestlefest-hd-lite/id494132289?mt=8&amp;uo=4">"Lite"</a> and <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/wrestlefest-hd/id494137299?mt=8&amp;ign-mpt=uo%3D4">paid</a> for iPad.<br /><br />THQ also plans to release this new WrestleFest on XBLA, PSN, Android, and PC, sometime in 2012. So we hope the new version is good.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/21/wwe-wrestlefest-on-ios-today-coming-to-xbla-psn-pc-android-i/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>WWE WrestleFest on iOS today, coming to XBLA, PSN, PC, Android in 2012</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/21/wwe-wrestlefest-on-ios-today-coming-to-xbla-psn-pc-android-i/">WWE WrestleFest on iOS today, coming to XBLA, PSN, PC, Android in 2012</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 21 Feb 2012 11:00:00 EST. Pro wrestling has never been depicted as well as it has in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/wwe-12"><em>WWE '12</em></a>, a decidedly non-wrestling game. Sure, it's got "wrestling" embedded somewhere in its acronymic title, but <em>WWE '12</em> acts like a fighting game. In pro wrestling, the "other guy" in a match takes bumps, and helps dictate the pace of the bout. The video game versions of wrestling don't include blatant options to take falls. There is no intentional means of losing to give a low-card wrestler a "push."<br />
<br />
<em>WWE '12</em> continues the tradition of advancing the illusion of wrestling. Both as a video game and as an extension of the WWE product, it accomplishes that task exceedingly well.<br />

<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/wwe-all-stars"><em>WWE All Stars</em></a>, THQ's arcade-style wrestling game, is leaping from the top rope onto another platform: the 3DS. There, the exaggerated wrestlers will get to be exaggerated into a <em>third</em> dimension.<br />
<br />
The 3DS game will come pre-packed with the 13 rasslers offered as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wwe-all-stars,dlc">DLC</a> for the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions, and two exclusive gameplay modes, Gauntlet and Score Scramble. Gauntlet is a survival mode in which players have to take on every wrestler in the game. Score Scramble challenges players "to either reach a specific point total or to finish a timed match with the highest point total."<br />
<br />
The 3DS version of All Stars arrives on November 22. Unfortunately, we don't expect a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/20/mad-catzs-wwe-all-stars-brawlstick-and-brawlpad-revealed/">BrawlStick</a> release for this one.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/30/wwe-all-stars-enters-the-3ds-ring/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>WWE All Stars enters the 3DS ring</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/30/wwe-all-stars-enters-the-3ds-ring/">WWE All Stars enters the 3DS ring</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 30 Aug 2011 09:55:00 EST. The latest iteration of THQ's wrestling simulation series is dropping the unwieldy and kind of silly "Smackdown vs. Raw" title in favor of the short, easy to remember <em>WWE 12</em>. Hard to believe the same series can include both a game with that svelte a title and ones called "<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WWE_SmackDown!_Here_Comes_the_Pain">WWE Smackdown! Here Comes the Pain</a>." The new game hasn't been specifically announced for any platforms, but the trailer features PlayStation, Wii and Xbox 360 logos.<br />
<br />
THQ is showing off its revamped wrasslin' game at E3 and will <a href="http://community.smackdownvsraw.com/blog-post/wwe-games-e3-live-wwe-12-demo">stream gameplay demos</a> every day during the show next week. In the meantime, you can see the first screens in our gallery and get strangely emotional with Randy Orton after the break.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/wwe-12/">WWE 12</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/wwe-12/#4178277"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/05/mizfinisher1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/wwe-12/#4178278"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/05/miztaunt_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/wwe-12/#4178279"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/05/ortonmove1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/wwe-12/#4178280"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/05/ortonpunt1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/31/the-next-wwe-game-is-just-wwe-12/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The next WWE game is just 'WWE 12'</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/31/the-next-wwe-game-is-just-wwe-12/">The next WWE game is just 'WWE 12'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 31 May 2011 19:30:00 EST. In the last decade, wrestling video games have done an exceptional job of recreating the dense rules, convoluted dramas and worn bodies that comprise the popular television enterprise that entertains the red meat-eating swath of America.<br />
<br />
It is a strange, slightly silly pursuit: creating a realistic replica of a fantasy. And yet, developers and publishers have, without asking why, fed us real-fake wrestling games, where punches whiff and luchadores disappointingly obey the laws of gravity.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/wwe-all-stars"><em>WWE All-Stars</em></a>, the latest wrestling game from THQ, sounds, in name alone, like another addition to this long, dull line of reality-fantasy-simulators. It's not: Its wrestlers are brawny theme park caricatures; its drama is shallow and direct; and its rules are nonexistent.<br />

</em></div>
<em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/wwe-all-stars">All Stars</a></em> is supposed to represent one of the biggest changes to WWE gaming this generation. Promising an over-the-top arcade fighting engine, THQ hopes that this latest effort will "bridge generations of WWE enthusiasts and casual followers alike." As a personal fan of <em>Legends of Wrestlemania</em>, <em>All Stars</em>' simplified controls and decades-spanning roster certainly piqued my interest. But is it successful? From what I've seen so far: <span style="font-style: italic;">a</span><em>lmost</em>.<br />
<br />
"The greatest matches haven't happened until now," the game's marketing slogan enthusiastically promotes. Certainly, there's a lot of potential here, with The Rock, Andre the Giant and -- for the first time ever in a WWE game -- Randy Savage, standing amongst some of the announced characters. Perhaps more than other fighting games, this title will live and die by its roster. Right now, there are too many obvious omissions to count. In its current state, the roster is akin to a <em>Smash Bros.</em> without Mario.<br />
<br />
Of course, THQ undoubtedly has a plethora of announcements to make but, like its current ensemble, I couldn't help but shake the feeling that the gameplay didn't <em>quite</em> live up to my expectations. The concept is terrific, and definitely the freshest take on the sport I've seen in a long time. <em>All Stars</em> throws away any semblance of reality, and chooses a wild combat system that features superhuman moves, and encourages juggling and air combos. Seeing the Macho Man do a spinning somersault onto Big Show as the entire background explodes into a colorful vignette? Magical. Unfortunately, these moments don't happen quite often enough.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/wwe-all-stars-1-19/">WWE All Stars (1/19/11)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/wwe-all-stars-1-19/#3798585"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/01/js5knuckleandre2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/wwe-all-stars-1-19/#3798586"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/01/jsbigshowsheamus03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/wwe-all-stars-1-19/#3798587"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/01/jsbigshowsheamus05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/wwe-all-stars-1-19/#3798588"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/01/jsbigshowmove1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/wwe-all-stars-1-19/#3798589"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/01/jsbretmove1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/19/wwe-all-stars-preview/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>WWE All Stars preview: Grappling with change</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/19/wwe-all-stars-preview/">WWE All Stars preview: Grappling with change</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 19 Jan 2011 17:00:00 EST. European sites including <a href="http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=275404">CVG</a> and <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2010-11-12-kinect-move-ufc-training-game-dated">Eurogamer</a> say THQ announced that <em>UFC Personal Trainer</em>, the UFC-themed exercise game for Kinect, Move, and Wii, will be released in Europe on April 1 of next year, bringing with it THQ's firm (but completely unspoken) guarantee that regular use will make you look exactly like Brock Lesnar. Out the same day: <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/wwe-all-stars"><em>WWE All-Stars</em></a>, a similarly casual-focused game, but with wrestling instead of whatever you call what happens in UFC, and arcade-style controls instead of motion.<br />

THQ today published a "core games" release calendar, highlighted by the revised May 2011 date given for <em>Red Faction: Armageddon</em>, which pushes it out of a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/q1-2011">crowded first quarter</a> -- but just a few months beyond the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/11/next-red-faction-planned-for-march-2011/">initially proposed date</a>. The calendar spans the publisher's fiscal 2012 (April 2011 - March 2012) and also includes a Spring 2011 release window for <em>MX vs. ATV Alive</em>, followed by the planned summertime launch of <em>Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine</em>. A new <em>Saints Row</em> game (or <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/29/thq-saints-row-for-3ds-was-already-being-made-for-xbox-live-ar/">games</a>?) and a <em>WWE</em> iteration are expected next fall.<br />
<br />
Additionally, an upcoming <em>UFC</em> title has been slated for Winter 2012 (January-March 2012). Of course, all dates are "subject to change," THQ notes.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/13/red-faction-armageddon-coming-may-2011-new-saints-row-next-fal/">Red Faction: Armageddon coming May 2011; new Saints Row next fall</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 13 Sep 2010 17:12:00 EST. <div style="text-align: left;">THQ has another WWE game on the way, joining its <em>WWE Smackdown vs. Raw</em> series and the new <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/wwe-all-stars"><em>WWE All Stars</em></a> (pictured). According to THQ's Danny Bilson, the new WWE "extension" shares <em>All Stars</em>' focus on accessibility over <em>Smackdown vs. Raw's</em> detailed ... simulation of simulated wrestling.</div>
</center> <br />
"Next year you'll see another new extension [of the WWE license]," Bilson told <a href="http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=257335">CVG</a>, "that's just as exciting as <em>All Stars</em>, but a little different. We're not talking about that yet." He said that the plan was to release a WWE game every six months (presumably for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/23/thq-pins-wwe-license-down-for-8-years/">many years to come</a>), alternating between <em>Smackdown vs. Raw</em><em>, All Stars</em> and this new series -- the latter two being "more friendly, easier and less simmy than <em>Smackdown vs. Raw</em>." There's a fourth franchise too, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/14/thq-announces-two-new-wwe-games/">WWE Smackdown Vs. Raw Online</a></em>, but that's intended solely for the Asian market.<br />
<br />
If you're thinking that the "new" series will feature WWE wrestlers driving in cars and shooting at each other -- THQ <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WWE_Crush_Hour">tried that one</a> already. Our wild guess: the new game's gonna really <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/kinect|project-natal">Kinect</a> players to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/playstation-move/">the Moves</a></em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/28/thq-spinning-off-another-wwe-series/">THQ spinning off another WWE series</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 28 Jul 2010 20:40:00 EST. The publisher announced that <em>WWE Smackdown vs. Raw</em> is available now on the App Store for $4.99.<br />
<br />
<em>Smackdown </em>on iPhone allows you to pit your own fictional wrestler against eleven real (at least, the pro wrestling definition of "real") WWE wrestlers, or control one of those celebrity personalities in exhibition matches. Hopefully players won't have to grapple <em>too</em> much with the control scheme, which uses a combination of swipes and context-sensitive buttons, in their attempts to grapple with virtual wrestlers.<br />

Today, THQ <a href="http://investor.thq.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=96376&amp;p=irol-newsArticle&amp;ID=1369060&amp;highlight=">shared the news</a> that it has secured the exclusive rights to develop and publish games based on the WWE wrestling license for eight additional years, effective January 1, 2010.<br />
<br />
Not coincidentally, THQ has also <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE5BM08C20091223?type=sportsNews">settled</a> its <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/28/thq-triumphant-in-wwe-jakks-pacific-dispute/">legal issues</a> with WWE toy producer Jakks Pacific. THQ and Jakks will dissolve their venture using the <em>other</em> universal solvent: money. THQ has agreed to pay the company $20 million, along with previously earned royalties, and will pay the WWE $13.2 million.<br />
<br />
All of the companies found this agreement preferable to the previous offer, wherein WWE and Jakks would hit THQ with folding chairs while the referee mysteriously looked away.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/23/thq-pins-wwe-license-down-for-8-years/">THQ pins WWE license down for 8 years</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 23 Dec 2009 10:30:00 EST. It seems investors are unhappy that one of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/THQ/">THQ</a>'s most important relationships continues to be in flux. After the news that the company was extending its renewal notice with the WWE on October 28, its stock has lost 12 percent of its value, according to <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/thq-stock-loses-12-percent-since-wwe-announcement">GameIndustry.biz</a>. When compared to its worth on September 23, the company is down 26 percent.<br /> <br /> THQ's convoluted relationship with JAKKS Pacific and the WWE is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/28/thq-announces-extension-of-wwe-renewal-notice-pachter-explains/">fully explained here</a>, but it suffices to say that things are pretty messy right now, and it seems the stockholders are getting impatient for tidiness.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/03/thq-stock-loses-12-percent-after-wwe-extension/">THQ stock loses 12 percent after WWE extension</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 03 Nov 2009 18:00:00 EST. THQ announced today that World Wrestling Entertainment has extended a deadline that allows the publisher to renew its licensing contract. The extension lasts until December 21, 2009 -- the original deadline was November 1. If signed, the agreement would be good through December 31, 2014. <br /><br />THQ is cool with the WWE, but it's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/01/jakks-wants-to-keep-wwe-thq-not-quite-sure/">not very chummy</a> with JAKKS Pacific, its longtime partner in the WWE licensing venture. The wounds also run deep between <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2004/10/21/wwe-sues-thq/">JAKKS and the WWE</a>. When asked for comment on the license renewal and further details regarding the three-way deal, a THQ representative told Joystiq that the publisher plans to renew its contract with the WWE, and then added, "Beyond that, I cannot comment."<br /><br />The business, politics and legal issues are certainly complicated. We spoke with Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter who laid out multiple scenarios, but in the end he believes the most likely outcome is that the joint venture between THQ and JAKKS will be terminated. If JAKKS enforces its (believed to be one-year) non-compete clause, then no WWE games can be produced. Neither side would benefit from that, however.<br /><br />Pachter suggests that the WWE's renewal deadline was extended to give THQ and JAKKS time to settle their issues. What it sounds like to us: THQ and WWE want to move forward as a couple, and the previous arrangement, featuring JAKKS as the third wheel, has worn out its welcome. Check out Pachter's complete analysis after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/28/thq-announces-extension-of-wwe-renewal-notice-pachter-explains/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>THQ announces extension of WWE renewal notice; Pachter explains</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/28/thq-announces-extension-of-wwe-renewal-notice-pachter-explains/">THQ announces extension of WWE renewal notice; Pachter explains</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 28 Oct 2009 11:30:00 EST. Other than a recent countdown offered by THQ, we haven't heard much about the publisher's next effort in its longtime wrestling franchise, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wwe-smackdown-vs-raw-2010/"><em>WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2010</em></a>. Today though, THQ announced an October 20 release date for the game, along with a clear marketing push towards online play.<br />
<br />
Nelo Lucich, a senior VP at licensor JAKKS Pacific, leads the charge, saying, "The vast array of creative and online options allow players the ability to create their own unique Superstars, right down to their tattoos and customized ring gear." He goes on to tout the game's "Community Creations interface" and other options for online play, remaining confident. And maybe he should be, considering the game's October release now has a much better chance of standing out in a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/delays">delay-riddled holiday season</a> than ever before.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/24/wwe-smackdown-vs-raw-2010-dated-detailed/">WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2010 dated, detailed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 24 Aug 2009 20:30:00 EST. We know <em>exactly</em> what the <a href="http://www.smackdownvsraw.com/">countdown</a> is <em>for</em> -- <em>WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2010</em> -- and, since it's an annual sports franchise, we don't really expect <em>surprises</em>. But there it is, counting down three days until we'll see the roster, media, downloads, list of features, and other areas of what promises to be a bog-standard game website.<br />
<br />
Of course, the big attraction here is <em>what the new game will look like</em>. However, since <em>that</em> was <a href="http://us.thq.com/us/gamenews/show/7793/5338/WWE%C2%AE%20SmackDown%C2%AE%20vs.%20Raw%C2%AE%202010">revealed</a> on <em>Late Night With Jimmy Fallon</em>, that leaves ... the downloads? <em>Who </em>will appear on the downloadable desktop wallpaper.<strong> FIND OUT</strong> in three days!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/17/thq-begins-a-countdown-to-smackdown/">THQ begins a countdown to Smackdown</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 17 Aug 2009 21:00:00 EST. It looks as though two more will join PS3's esteemed Greatest Hits lineup. GameStop has recently dropped the price of both <a href="http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=70967"><em>Smackdown vs RAW 2009</em></a> and <em>Saints Row 2</em> to the standard Greatest Hits price of $29.99. The addition of these two titles will boost the number of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Sony_Greatest_Hits_games">PS3 Greatest Hits games</a> to over 20.<br />

You may not know this, but <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/thq">THQ</a> and JAKKS Pacific have been locked in a vicious courtroom tussle over payment for work on some of THQ's WWE titles. See, THQ and JAKKS had a deal wherein THQ was to pay JAKKS 10% of money accrued from the sale of the JAKKS-developed WWE games; however, the two ALL CAPS companies were set to renegotiate that deal when <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/01/jakks-wants-to-keep-wwe-thq-not-quite-sure/">JAKKS jumped the gun</a>, signing a new contract without THQ's consent. And, as you've probably guessed, that's when THQ sicked the lawyers on 'em. Today, the result of this ongoing cage match are in and THQ managed to pin JAKKS for the 1-2-3.<br /> <br /> In the end, THQ was able to get that 10% figure lowered to only 6%, which will save the company "approximately" $23 million. JAKKS is surely upset: before the suit, the company was set to receive $57 million for its efforts in developing WWE titles; now that figure is a much lower $34 million. And what have we learned here? In the fantastical world of WWE, signing important documents without the consent of your business partner might make for great television but ... wait, we need to rethink this lesson ...<br /> <br /> <a href="http://investor.thq.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=96376&amp;p=irol-newsArticle&amp;ID=1311959&amp;highlight=">Source</a> - THQ Prevails in JAKKS Pacific Arbitration Dispute<br /> <a href="http://www.businesswire.com/portal/site/home/permalink/?ndmViewId=news_view&amp;newsId=20090727005393&amp;newsLang=en">Source</a> - JAKKS Pacific Announces Result in THQ Arbitration<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/28/thq-triumphant-in-wwe-jakks-pacific-dispute/">THQ triumphant in WWE / JAKKS Pacific dispute</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 28 Jul 2009 12:00:00 EST. JAKKS is more than happy to reenter into its WWE licensing deal with THQ, but the gaming company <a href="http://www.businesswire.com/portal/site/home/permalink/?ndmViewId=news_view&amp;newsId=20090701005601&amp;newsLang=en">isn't so sure</a> it's ready to make a commitment. After JAKKS signed on the dotted line to extend its gaming agreement with the wrestling group for five years, THQ sued the toymaker, saying it wasn't ready to make a decision and that JAKKS had no right to sign the agreement without THQ's consent.<br /><br />There were some reportedly <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/wwe-sues-jakks-and-thq-over-alleged-bribery-and-racketeering">shady dealings</a> when JAKKS originally got the contract -- perhaps THQ wants to get the whole pie for itself. Who knows? Either way, the two companies have entered into arbitration, so hopefully the tiff won't have an impact on releases.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/01/jakks-wants-to-keep-wwe-thq-not-quite-sure/">JAKKS wants to keep WWE, THQ not quite sure</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 01 Jul 2009 23:00:00 EST. According to the analysts at Cowen and Company, several of <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/thq">THQ</a>'s key franchises - think WWE, SpongeBob SquarePants and <em>Saints Row</em> - are in a slump. <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/thq-franchises-in-decline-saints-row-2-sales-below-expectations">GI.biz</a> details the firm's findings and all signs point to the publisher posting a "substantial" loss this fiscal year.<br /><br />The firm states that the 22% Q4 year-over-year decline of the WWE franchise, which it calls one of the last "bastions of strength" at the publisher, is of particular concern, while poor little SpongeBob saw a 19% decline over the prior year. <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/saints-row-2">Saints Row 2 </a></em>also isn't doing too hot, with the firm expecting the gangsta-fied sandbox title to move just 900K units over the next year in the US. Though the original <em>Saints Row</em> performed better on a single console, 2006 also had a very different software landscape (read: <em>Grand Theft Auto IV</em> wasn't out yet). Let's see if this holiday season changes THQ's plans to focus on a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/13/thqs-new-strategy-is-to-make-a-couple-core-titles-yearly/">few "core" titles</a> yearly.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/22/analyst-report-thq-franchises-in-decline/">Analyst report: THQ franchises in decline</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 22 Jan 2009 14:45:00 EST. Tons of bling to get in this WWE game. There are 7 (!) Gold Trophies to acquire ... but only 2 Bronze Trophies.<br /><br />

Who doesn't like the word "exclusive"? Lesser wrestling fans may find it difficult to decide which version of the annual <em>WWE Smackdown vs. Raw</em> game to get this year, but the choice should be made easy for true rasslin' aficionados. THQ just announced a Collector's Edition for <em><a href="http://ps3fanboy.com/tag/wwe">WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2009</a></em>, and it's exclusive to the PS3. <br />
<br />
The Collector's Edition includes an extra Blu-ray disc with "<span class="ccbnTxt">a behind-the-scenes documentary on the making of the videogame, as well as more than two hours of WWE footage."</span> The North American version with have a "steel cage packaging," while Europe and Asia will get their bundle in a mini-ring -- because you're not hardcore enough to step into a steel cage, son. The press release was shy on a price unfortunately; however, with a Sunday, November 9 release so close, we should have that info soon enough.<br />

While promoting THQ's <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/smackdown-vs-raw">SmackDown Vs. Raw</a></em> in London, the WWE's Randy Orton told <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=208353">Eurogamer</a> that he wants to see more violence in games. He believes parents shouldn't be worrying about games when some don't even know their kids are watching shows like <em>South Park</em>.<br /><br />The 28-year-old pro wrestler, who became a dad for the first time last month, believes movie violence has way more "f*cked up sh*t" than games. The man who makes a living off <em>professional</em> violence points out that playing <em>Mortal Kombat</em> when he was younger didn't hurt him in the long run. So, what's the father of a newborn play when he's not "too covered in poop"? Orton says he plays <em>Mario Kart</em>, but he doesn't use the wheel because he thinks it's "just a gimmick."<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.gamepolitics.com/2008/08/11/wwe039s-randy-orton-wants-more-violence-games">GP</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/11/wwe-star-believes-movie-violence-more-f-cked-up-than-games/">WWE star believes movie violence more 'f*cked up' than games</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 11 Aug 2008 10:00:00 EST. Not much was revealed about <em>WWE Legends of WreslteMania</em>, a new wrestling title to hit next year. All that's known so far about the game is that it's<span class="ccbnTxt"> being made by THQ and JAKKS Pacific</span>, and that it will come out March 2009 to coincide with Wrestlemania 25.<br /><br />Other than that, everything is up for speculation -- especially that coveted roster. If the game's title wasn't enough of a hint, it looks like stars who've appeared at Wrestlemania will be the only ones making it into the game. Please THQ, whatever you do, don't include the likes of Tyson and non-wrestler personalities that have been at the big WM. That will just be disappointing. And, the "Macho Man" better not be missing this time.<br /><br />[Via press release]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/07/thq-announce-wwe-legends-of-wrestlemania/">THQ announces WWE Legends of WrestleMania</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 07 May 2008 23:30:00 EST. We didn't know wrestling was still popular enough to warrant an annual release, but over the weekend <a href="http://www.thq.com">THQ</a> dropped the trailer for <em>WWE: Smackdown vs. Raw 2009</em>. The video showcases the latest feature for the upcoming title, co-op story mode. While we're sure there is still a group of fans clamoring for a "chair-shot to the face" good time, we wonder if we really need another <em>WWE</em> game every year? <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/madden-09">Madden's</a></em> annual release already gets us annoyed but we understand the reasoning behind it, but does including one new addition and swapping some characters in the roster really need another $60 price tag?

We've seen it in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/25/ds-fanboy-interview-rob-hawkey-on-mlb-2k8-fantasy-all-stars/"><em>MLB 2K8 Fantasy All-Stars</em></a>, and now we're seeing it in <em>WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2009. </em>THQ has hired Japanese "ninja developer" <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TOSE">TOSE</a> (best known for <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Princess_Peach">Super Princess Peach</a>,</em> the <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Densetsu_no_Stafy">Stafy</a> </em>games, and being mysterious) to create their latest DS wrestling game.<br /><br />They have bizarred it up indeed, adding an out-of-ring mode in which the backstage area is full of NPCs and rendered environments, much like an RPG overworld. You'll travel around taking on missions and interacting with other wrestlers as you try to level up your character's various attributes, like "Sweatiness," "Shirt-tearing" and "Catchphrases."*<br /><br />It actually sounds like a really cool take on the RPG. It's like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/17/ds-fanboy-poll-would-you-buy-puzzle-quest-1-5/"><em>Puzzle Quest</em></a>, but with wrasslin'! Unfortunately, the screenshots so far don't really show anything but creepy 3D models.<br /><br />*not actual attributes<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/31/wwe-smackdown-vs-rpg/">WWE SmackDown vs. RPG</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 31 Mar 2008 09:45:00 EST. We could even say the series has been suffering from a mild case of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/madden/"><em>Madden</em></a> syndrome. With the announcement of this year's iteration: <em>Smackdown! vs. Raw 2009</em>, however, things finally look like they're going to change.<br />
<br />
First and foremost, the series is finally getting the much needed online gameplay and DLC support that fans have been clamoring for in the past years. Unfortunately, specific details on the DLC are still being kept secret. Senior creative manager Cory Ledesma does hint, however, at the possibility of updating the WWE roster via DLC. As for the second major addition, say hello to the brand new "Create-A-Finisher." This tool allows players to create unique ultimate signature moves by piecing together over 500 animations. Also, a re-vamped career mode makes its debut, now allowing for the first time a co-op season with stronger emphasis on tag team action.<br />
<br />
As for the roster, so far only Chris Jericho, Jeff Hardy, Matt Hardy, Randy Orton, Mr. Kennedy, Undertaker, and John Cena have been revealed. A final number for the roster has not been announced.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/28/wwe-smackdown-vs-raw-2009-announced-first-details-revealed/">WWE Smackdown! vs. Raw 2009 announced, first details revealed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 28 Mar 2008 08:30:00 EST.
