As if it wasn't enough to get the chance to spend today playing a fake game of big-head stickball, Microsoft is adding two -- count 'em, two -- additional games to the XBLA service today. First up is Tenchu: Shadow Assault, a multiplayer ninja game of some sort based on FROM Software's long-running series. Just like a ninja itself, this game really came out of nowhere, and could quite possibly kill you in your sleep.

The second, Beat'n Groovy, looks like Konami's long-running Japanese series Pop'n Music, but, against all odds, has an even worse name. You can pick them both up for 800 points ($10).

Source -- Arcade: Shadow Assault/Tenchu [Major Nelson]
Source -- Arcade: Beat'n Groovy [Major Nelson]

Permalink | Email this | Comments

This Wednesday: MLB Stickball on XBLA

Filed under: Microsoft Xbox 360, Sports

It's October and many of you are still reeling from late-season collapses (hey Mets!) or more recent ones (was it the curse?). But a few of us have waited fifteen years to feel this high heading into the league championship series (and happily distracted from the Eagles' sinking record), and what better way to align our collective karma than to play a game of stickball? No, no, not actual stickball (by all means, stay seated), but 2K Sports new Xbox Live Arcade game-cum-reliable-prediction-simulator MLB Stickball (800 / $10), featuring 120 players from all 30 teams.

So head out to the back-alley ballpark, Dodgers vs. Phillies, and see to it the right team wins. Seriously people: Don't. Jinx. Anything!

Update: Two additional games coming this Wednesday!

Gallery: MLB Stickball

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

This Wednesday: XBLA winds up in War World (with Mega Man 9)

Filed under: Microsoft Xbox 360, Action

This Wednesday sees a <strike>sole</strike> new Xbox Live Arcade release in the form of War World, a third-person shooter set in a typically mech-infested milieu. Aside from an assortment of bipedal tanks, War World offers players a 100-level single-player campaign, four multiplayer modes (deathmatch, CTF, etcetera) and best of all, "normal mapped diffuse and specular lighting," in exchange for 800 ($10).

It's also a much better deal than developer Third Wave Games' previous title, Peace World, which pretty much everyone found to be a boring, unrealistic and touchy-feely affair.

Update: Oops! Lines you're likely to hear from this week's Xbox Live Arcade release, Duke Nukem 3D:

"What are you? Some bottom-feeding, scum sucking algae eater?"

"Hmm, that's one "Doomed" Space Marine."

"I should have known those alien maggots booby trapped the sub."

It's another triple-threat (erm, make that treat) this week for Xbox Live Arcade connoisseurs. Debuting after the Virtual Console version, the classic Neo-Geo fighter, Samurai Shodown II, arrives at <strike>400 ($5)</strike> [800 ($10)] and should be worth all 32 quarters if it's a carbon copy of the arcade / ridiculously expensive home version.

Joining the sword-clashing samurai are Rocket Bowl, D3Publisher's absurd - yet interesting - take on bowling, and Shotest (not Shortest) Shogi, a prim-and-proper multiplayer version of the classic Japanese table game from Microsoft. They're both hitting at 800 ($10) each.

Also prepped to pop up in the Marketplace are 1200 new puzzles for Buku Sudoku (200 / $2.50) and the second set of expansion levels for N+ (200 / $2.50).

[Update: "Starting on Wednesday, September 10, 2008 Xbox Live members will have the opportunity to download Samurai Showdown II for 800. We don't even know what that means, honestly. What you just read is the nonsensical result of Microsoft deciding to unleash three thematically varied games on Xbox Live Arcade Wednesday. How are we supposed to tie a space shooter, a card game and a meme-based dodgeball game into a coherent headline? Oh, and just wait till you get to the part where we explain what each game entails. Here we go:

The showdown between pirates and ninjas (also, robots and zombies) begins in earnest with the release of Pirates vs. Ninjas Dodgeball, a lighthearted celebration of long-dead cultures and non-fatal projectiles. The game and its 8-player online matches can be had for 800 ($10).

Similarly priced is Shred Nebula, which immediately defies expectations by being utterly devoid of guitar-playing space clouds. In fact, it offers "deep multiplayer space combat" for up to eight players online, along with Adventure, Score Attack and Deathmatch modes.

Finally, there's the online-capable and sufficiently self-explanatory Gin Rummy for 400 ($5). That about does it for this paragraph.

Gallery: Pirates vs. Ninjas Dodgeball

Well, it's about time. Also: woo! Finished back in May, the colossally anticipated four-player slash-'em-up, Castle Crashers, is set to crash XBL's download servers this Wednesday. We're sure that The Behemoth is happy, gamers are happy, and we can't tell you how happy we are to finally be able to write this particular XBLA Wednesday post.

The act of comically crashing castles will run you 1,200 ($15), but from the time we've already spent with the game, it will be worth every last . So, just about 48 hours until we can get to unlocking those hidden characters. And don't forget, if you've already bought The Behemoth's first XBLA offering, Alien Hominid, you'll get an insta-unlock of ... the Alien Hominid. Part 3 of the exciting five-part XBLAugust series, in which our heroes now throw aside their time warping abilities and receive an implanted bionic arm for swinging around and shooting non-Hitlers into oblivion. If you wish to enlist into Bionic Commando Rearmed on Xbox Live this Wednesday, you're going to have to shell out 800 MS points (US $10). Entry fee to ye olde casino is 800 MS points (US $10), or free if you pre-order Fable 2 at a participating retailer.

Gallery: Bionic Commando Rearmed

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

This Wednesday: Braid makes timely arrival on XBLA

Filed under: Microsoft Xbox 360, Adventure, Puzzle

This Wednesday marks the opportunity to become a tie-wearing time traveler in Jonathan Blow's Braid, an "artful puzzle-platformer" and the next volley in Microsoft's all-out August Arcade assault. You'll traverse multiple worlds as you search for a princess (yes, the abducted kind) and wrap your mind around various instances of time behaving badly -- that includes rewinding, time streams, parallel realities, time dilation and "perhaps more."

Oh, and you'll be wanting to know the price of all this. Well, we hate to rain on your Braid, but despite Microsoft's earlier denial, the game will indeed cost 1200 ($15).

Gallery: Braid

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

This Wednesday (today, we mean): Geometry Wars 2

Filed under: Microsoft Xbox 360, Action

Wow, how long have we waited to write that headline? 100 years? 150? Even now as the momentous day has arrived, it still puzzles us that we had to wait so long for the reigning king of dual-stick shooters to return to us. C'mon guys, you just bump all the sliders from 8 to 10, it's not rocket science.

In case you've forgotten, your 800 point purchase is going to net you a "remixed" version of the first game and five new modes: Waves, Pacifism, King, Deadline and Sequence.
Capcom continues its retro revival on XBLA this Wednesday with the release of 1942: Joint Strike. Developed by Backbone Entertainment (Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3 and the upcoming Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix), the game is a classic two-player, top-down shooter set against the backdrop of an alternate WWII where laser cannons and building-sized tanks are commonplace. It's landing at 800 MS points ($10).

Go! Go! Break Steady is a rhythm puzzle game set against the backdrop of an alternate WWII- er, actually it's a breakdancing themed puzzler from indie dev Little Boy Games. We first checked out this XNA-to-XBLA success story at GDC '08. You can pop and/or lock to your heart's content for 800 MS points ($10). If you don't care for the trial game, you can always use the $10 to support your local youth center, which was likely saved by breakdancers in the '80s.

The second commenter will likely correct him in a patronizing tone, reminding him that a requirement for news is that it be new, and that this story, therefore, is not news at all. The third commenter, a jocular fellow, will then inquire if it is, in fact, olds? We get it, alright? However, we've never failed to mention new additions to the Xbox Live Arcade, and we don't plan on starting this week. Besides, when you see these sterling new releases, we don't think you'll fault us for being a few days late to the new release party.

First up is Double D Dodgeball (800 MS points/$10), which recreates the classic playground sport with an eye-searing "retro arcade design". The game dropped two weeks before its expected release date, though a reported bug that kicks players off of Xbox Live upon starting up the game make us wonder if perhaps a few guns were jumped. Joining it is Coffeetime Crosswords (800 MS points/$10). With 150 puzzles and a co-op mode, this new entry will surely fulfill all your sinister linguiphilic desires.

Rounding out the list is the EA Fantasy Football Live Draft Tracker (400 MS points/$5), which allows users of EA's online fantasy leagues to import their league settings, draft new players, then export their new rosters back onto EA's servers. This is not a game, and we regret including it in this post.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

This Wednesday: Schizoid and Golf: Tee It Up! tee off on XBLA

Filed under: Microsoft Xbox 360, Action, Sports, Casual

We've been covering Schizoid, the first home-grown XNA game to hit XBLA, since this time last year. Now it's finally <strike>blasting</strike> bumping its way onto the Marketplace, unique gameplay mechanic in tow. Priced at 800 MS points ($10), the game is entirely co-op centric, tasking players with ramming their ship (or ships, should they feel up to the dual-ship-controlling "Überschizoid" mode's challenge) into enemies of the same color. Play with another Live user or let the CPU control ship two.

Super Stardust HD developer Housemarque brings Golf: Tee It Up! to XBLA ... and an incredible likeness to Sony's Hot Shots Golf franchise to mind. Endless rounds of this golf game for beginners and seasoned vets alike (dare we say it's "golf for everyone"?) will set you back 800 MS points ($10).

Gallery: Schizoid (XBLA)

Gallery: Golf: Tee It Up!

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

This Wednesday: Soulcalibur still burns on XBLA

Filed under: Microsoft Xbox 360, Fighting

OK, so not so much a surprise on the XBLA front this week, since we brought you the rumor last week that Soulcalibur would likely be released soon on the service. (It'll be there this Wednesday for 800 points [$10]). But hey, Schizoid wasn't released like we thought it would be, so that's kind of a surprise, right? Not like, a great one, but a surprise all the same.

In other surprises that won't necessarily have you vibrating with glee, Wits and Wagers will be getting 280 new questions this week for 320 MS points ($4). The game is the debut title from Vancouver-based Playful Entertainment and will cost 800 MS Points ($10). Ticket to Ride joins other German board-to-digital leapers, Catan and Carcassonne.

Also arriving this week is Happy Tree Friends: False Alarm, which aims to deliver ten levels of action-puzzle ultra violence. Happy Tree Friends costs 800 MS Points ($10) and is rated "M," obviously. Ticket to Ride is rated "E," by the way, unless you use the Vision cam ... then an "AO" happening is never far behind.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

This Wednesday: 'Elements of Destruction' and 'Sea Life Safari' on XBLA

Frozen Codebase, the developer of one of XBLA's worst-reviewed (and likely soon to be delisted) titles, Screwjumper, is back this week, begging for forgiveness in the form of Elements of Destruction. (Our condolences to all two of you who were eagerly awaiting a Screwjumper 2.) The dev's sophomore effort has players unleashing earthquakes, tornadoes, and other natural disaster nastiness as <strike>someone who paid 800 MS points for Screwjumper</strike> a mad scientist. It runs 800 MS points ($10), but remember these two words: trial version.

Moving on, Sierra Online has some family fare on tap in the form of Sea Life Safari. Although other underwater exploration games have surfaced this generation, Sierra's toe-in-the-pool effort looks to be on the shallow end if you're any kind of serious gamer. The game lets kids and their parents poke around under the waves and snap photos of what they find. It's another 800 MS point ($10) release, but, given how basic it seems, we're not quite sure how many folks are going to like the tuna that.

http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sea-life-safari-xbla/

Gallery: Sea Life Safari (XBLA)

http://www.joystiq.com/photos/elements-of-destruction/

Gallery: Elements of Destruction (XBLA)

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

This Wednesday: Commando 3 and Frogger 2 hop onto XBLA

Filed under: Microsoft Xbox 360, Action, Casual

Xbox Live Arcade, ever the service to indulge the inner omni-directional shooter fan we all obviously have, is getting another dose of run-one-direction-while-shooting-in-another this week - with an extra-special added bonus. Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3 (800 MS points) is just one of several Capcom retro resurrections hitting Live this year and provides a highly stylized new take (with three-player coop) on the arcade classics Commando and Mercs. Of course, that added bonus we spoke of is a "golden ticket" into the Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix beta, which will be available for download on June 25 to anyone who purchases Commando 3. Is that a deal anyone can pass up, Ryu? "Sho-you-can't!"

Wolves (or shooting) not your thing? Voltex (the developer, not a Ukranian pop star) has you covered in ah-dorable little frogs this week with Frogger 2 (800 MS points). This spiritual successor to the coin-op classic (also available on XBLA) features new levels, new artwork, and what no XBL game can be without: a co-op mode (for up to four players, in this case). This release should at least make the parents of young'ns hoppy.

Gallery: Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3

Gallery: Frogger 2 (XBLA)

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

This Wednesday: Roogoo has pocket Aces (of the Galaxy)

It's not often we read a press release lauding a game for "[updating] the square peg in round hole premise to a whole new level," but that's just how Roogoo is described. You can find out for yourself this Wednesday, either through the demo or by plopping down a virtual Alexander Hamilton (800 MS points).

Also coming this Wednesday (and also for 800 MS points) is Aces of the Galaxy, which looks to be a frenetic on-rails space shooter for those who haven't gotten their space shooter fills with Ikaruga. Both titles will be available this Wednesday, June 4 at 4:00 a.m. Joystiq Standard Time.

Gallery: Roogoo (XBLA)

It doesn't take a crystal ball to see that six months from now Warlords will be plenty eligible for delisting. Let's just say that deathmatches have come along way since 1980. But if you choose to respectfully disagree, you can pledge your feeble support to give this Atari classic a permanent home in the XBLA catalog by plunking down a five-spot (400 Microsoft Points). Just remember, some games are better left to memory -- and paddle controllers!

As for Buku Sudoku? Well, there's a reason this is the "first and only" Sudoku game on XBLA.
