Can you guess which of Future Publishing's nine magazines didn't lose readership in 2009? If your money was with <em>Edge</em>, you've got our permission to give yourself a nice big pat on the back. Go ahead, we'll wait. Done? <em>Good</em>. Like we were saying, the UK game mag publisher saw shrinking circulation numbers in 2009 -- the same year that saw the closure of <em>PlayStation World</em> by Future and the shuttering of long-running US gaming mag <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/egm"><em>EGM</em></a> by Ziff-Davis. <br />
<br />
While Edge circulation numbers rose by (a somewhat meager) 109 readers, Games Master dropped by 6,636 (to 34,313), PC Zone by 7,666 (to 11,357), and Xbox World 360 by 5,156 (to 25,874). While those numbers might seem a bit on the low side, that has more to do with the smaller size/population of the UK than anything else (though, of course, dropping readership numbers don't mean good things for <em>any</em> publication house). <br />
<br />
According to the <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/future-suffers-circulation-slump">GamesIndustry.biz</a> report, Future blames the circulation drops on "slowing sales and ad spend [advertisers spending on print advertising]." We've dropped the entire list of circulation numbers after the break (care of the UK Audit Bureau of Circulations), should you be so inclined to peruse all the stats.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/12/all-but-one-future-publication-saw-circulation-dip-in-2009/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>All but one Future publication saw circulation dip in 2009</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/12/all-but-one-future-publication-saw-circulation-dip-in-2009/">All but one Future publication saw circulation dip in 2009</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 12 Feb 2010 00:01:00 EST. When asked whether or not the <em>Assassin's Creed</em> series would be getting a third installment, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/assassins-creed-2"><em>Assassin's Creed 2</em></a> producer <span class="text_article_body">S&eacute;bastien Puel thinks the answer almost goes without saying. "</span><span class="text_article_body">I'm often asked if we're doing a third game after <em>ACII</em>... I mean, we could do 35 of these," he (hopefully) exaggerates to Xbox World 360 in the mag's latest issue (via <a href="http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=225343?cid=OTC-RSS&amp;attr=CVG-General-RSS">CVG</a>). When</span> the game's creative director told us the second game would be <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/04/assassins-creed-2-will-end-with-a-cliffhanger/">ending with a cliffhanger</a>, we didn't know he meant we'd have to play 35 games to resolve it -- that's approximately 35,000 <em>assassinated fools</em>, by our estimations.<br /><br />Explaining his hyperbole further, Puel admits that a female assassin isn't out of the question, even confirming "We've had discussions on that very topic." Still, the Ubisoft producer doesn't want to switch the protagonist's gender without a good reason. "<span class="text_article_body">World War II, the economies in England and France were run by women because the men were off fighting</span> ... <span class="text_article_body">we don't want to just decide we want to change and have a female hero, as </span><span class="text_article_body">the first inspiration is always the time period</span>." To read the full interview in its original context, pick up the latest issue of Xbox World 360 (if you're in the UK, that is).<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/assassins-creed-2/">Assassin's Creed II</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/assassins-creed-2/#1485933"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/04/eziohighres1024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/assassins-creed-2/#2071166"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/ac2_ca_001_carnival-1024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/assassins-creed-2/#2071167"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/ac2_ca_012_sanmarcoplacevenice-1024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/assassins-creed-2/#2071168"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/ac2_s_004-1024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/assassins-creed-2/#2071169"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/ac2_s_018-1024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/13/assassins-creed-2-producer-sees-franchise-expanding-beyond-a-tr/">Assassin's Creed 2 producer sees franchise expanding beyond a trilogy, maybe into WWII</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 13 Oct 2009 21:00:00 EST. As details slowly drip out of Xbox World 360's recent hands-on with upcoming water-based puzzler <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/hydrophobia">Hydrophobia</a></em>, the game's developer, Dark Energy Digital, is putting Internet-less Xbox 360 owners' fears to rest. In addition to releasing the game as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/30/hydrophobia-floats-to-xbla-goes-episodic/">three chapters on Xbox Live Marketplace</a>, <em>Hydrophobia</em> will be getting a disc release at the end of next year. <br /><br />Also of note, despite the game's grandiose scale, it weighs in at under 250MB -- well under the allowed <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/24/xbla-games-wont-get-bigger-than-2gb/">2GB file size</a> for XBLA releases that Microsoft recently increased. We've reached out to Dark Energy Digital to nail down some of the more slippery details on <em>Hydrophobia</em> and will update you as soon as we hear more.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/hydrophobia-xbla/">Hydrophobia</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/hydrophobia-xbla/#2332164"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/10/hydrophobia-01-1254442617_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/hydrophobia-xbla/#2332165"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/10/hydrophobia-02a_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/hydrophobia-xbla/#2332166"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/10/hydrophobia-03b_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/hydrophobia-xbla/#2332167"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/10/hydrophobia-04-1254442618_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/hydrophobia-xbla/#2332168"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/10/hydrophobia-05-1254442619_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/10/hydrophobia-flooding-retailer-shelves-as-well-as-xbla/">Hydrophobia flooding retailer shelves as well as XBLA</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 10 Oct 2009 05:00:00 EST. <br />
We haven't heard anything about Dark Energy Digital's water physics-based horror/puzzle game <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/hydrophobia"><em>Hydrophobia</em></a> in nearly a year, which makes today's news that the game is heading to XBLA rather than getting a full retail release all the more jarring. According to a preview of the game by <em>Xbox World 360 UK</em> (as reprinted on <a href="http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=224354">CVG</a>), not only is <em>Hyrdrophobia</em> getting the digital distribution treatment, it'll be heading to Microsoft's console in the form of "three episodes of around five hours each, to be released within a twelve month window." <br />
<br />
The preview contains undoubtedly the largest glut of info on the game we've seen since we <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/hydrophobia">first heard about it</a> way back in 2007 -- when it was still planned for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. Apparently the episodes could continue if they prove successful enough, though no word is given on if they'll ever head to PS3 and PC. The game has already missed its <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/14/blade-interactive-to-self-publish-hydrophobia-in-march-09/">planned March 2009 release</a> window and dropped a few consoles for its eventual release, so we've reached out to Dark Energy Digital for more details.<br />
<br />
[Update: Dark Energy Digital got back to us with some fresh shots from the game (seen above).]<br />
