Thanks to a weakening yen and an upswing in the US job market, the company's stock was <a href="https://www.google.co.uk/finance?cid=672774">up 7.38 percent</a> as of the market closing on March 8, up to &yen;10,330 ($110). Other Japanese companies, as <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2013-03-08-nintendo-stock-leaps-8-percent-as-yen-weakens-us-job-market-improves">GamesIndustry.biz</a> notes, have also benefitted from the improving US economy and weakening yen, including Sony, Konami, Capcom and Namco Bandai.<br /><br />A weak exchange rate is good for Nintendo, as it improves the number of yen earned per US dollar spent on its products. The downward trend in yen value recently <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/01/30/nintendo-cuts-hardware-sales-targets-after-shipping-3m-wii-u-con/">boosted Nintendo's financial outlook</a> for its fiscal 2012, ending March 31, despite the company dramatically reducing its hardware sales target for the Wii U and 3DS.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/08/nintendo-consumes-mushroom-stock-grows-over-7/">Nintendo consumes mushroom, stock grows over 7%</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 08 Mar 2013 12:15:00 EST. The Japanese version, says <a href="http://gematsu.com/2013/02/asahi-ps4-out-this-year-will-cost-over-40000-yen">the translated report</a>, will cost "greater than 40,000 yen," which means it will be more than $400 there.<br /><br />Asahi adds there will be a rush to meet sales demands on both sides of the world, but the paper doesn't specify a US price; however, the PlayStation 3 launched at $500 when it came to North America, and cost 49,980 yen in Japan, around $535. So Asahi's report suggests that whatever the next generation PlayStation's price is, it will likely be slightly cheaper than the PS3 was at launch.<br /><br /><span>There's also no mention of a European launch, and the PS3's launch was indeed delayed in Europe by hardware shortages. Hopefully, Sony will clear all this up on February 20.</span><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/06/rumor-ps4-in-japan-later-this-year-will-cost-more-than-400/">Rumor: PS4 in Japan later this year, will cost more than $400</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 06 Feb 2013 21:45:00 EST. According to <a href="http://news.vgchartz.com/news.php?id=6333">unofficial sales numbers from Japan</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/final-fantasy-xiii"><em>Final Fantasy XIII</em></a> has fallen down to number four on the sales list over there, after a very big <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/18/final-fantasy-xiii-launch-day-sales-exceed-1-million-in-japan/">million-plus release day</a> and a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/24/final-fantasy-xiii-limit-breaks-japanese-ps3-software-sales-reco/">record-breaking first week</a>. But <em>otaku</em> take heart: even though sales of the game dropped over a million units in the second week, this wasn't unexpected. <br />
<em><br />
Final Fantasy</em> games always tend to take a dip after the "day one purchase" audience gets their copies. The last iteration of the series took a 1.5 million unit hit in week two. But even with the lower sales, about 200,000 copies were traded for the appropriate cost in yen, which indicates <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/square-enix">Square Enix</a> is likely still on track to meet or exceed its <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/29/square-enix-expects-final-fantasy-xiii-sales-to-exceed-6-million/">six million target worldwide</a>. That's <em>a lot</em> of chocobos.<br />

With the Yen being so high, it drives up the cost of Japanese goods for U.S. retailers. And, seeing as how the U.S. economy has been in such bad shape all year, merchants have discounted their goods to offset that fall to a point where they can't afford to lower prices to attract customers any more.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wii-fit"><em>Wii Fit</em></a>, one of the items analysts see as being a must-have this season, could be most affected. With the profit margin on it so small (same goes for the Wii console itself), retailers can't afford to cut prices. One positive thing to come out of this, however, is that the Euro has been on a decline, as well. This means that Nintendo should be shipping more to the U.S., whereas in the past, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/01/pachter-unbalanced-wii-fit-shipments-due-to-weak-dollar/">Nintendo focused on Europe</a> first.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/unwrapping-wii-fit/">Unwrapping Wii Fit</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/unwrapping-wii-fit/#819008"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/05/wfun-m22001ak_thumbnail.jpg" alt="The box arrives!" title="The box arrives!" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/unwrapping-wii-fit/#818971"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/05/wfubgal-m22010ak_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/unwrapping-wii-fit/#818972"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/05/wfubgal-m22009ak_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/unwrapping-wii-fit/#818973"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/05/wfubgal-m22011ak_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/unwrapping-wii-fit/#819003"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/05/wfun-m22007ak_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Batteries" title="Batteries" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/24/strong-yen-could-see-lack-of-wii-bargains-this-holiday-season/">Strong Yen could see lack of Wii bargains this holiday season in U.S.</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 24 Oct 2008 15:21:00 EST. The surge in stock price echoed Goldman Sachs' decision to cover Nintendo's stocks; the investment bank offered up a "buy" rating with a target share price of &yen;71,000 ($609). In addition, and as if to brag, Nintendo raised its earnings expectations for the second time this business year to &yen;370 billion, which amazingly is still well below analyst predictions of &yen;415 billion. <br /><br />Nintendo can thank the continuing success of its <a href="http://wii.joystiq.com/">Wii</a> and <a href="http://ds.joystiq.com/">Nintendo DS</a> platforms as the drivers behind its most recent success story, while Goldman Sachs lays equal praise at the company's 'talent in creating new markets,' noting that this could bring Nintendo's stock into alignment with that of Apple. Seems reasonable enough to us. Their stock holders are generally quite happy, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/09/06/nintendo-stocks-movin-on-up-to-the-east-side/">especially in recent times</a>, and believe it or not, Nintendo has a war chest of something like ten bazillion yen. Certainly a large R&amp;D budget went into developing Wii technology, but everyone knows that the system is essentially a calculated risk. Nintendo needs to push its new brainchild, and it needs to push it <em>hard</em>; thus the chest springs open yet again.<br /><br />A recent Bloomberg article states that Nintendo will launch a year-long, $200 million ad campaign for the Wii. Further, 80% of that money will be solely devoted to marketing toward non-gamers, attempting to expand their market into the coveted (and excuse the generalization) "old people and women" demographic. That's a whole heck of a lot of money to get the word out ... be sure to do your part and invite your baby boomer neighbors for a quick session of <em>Wii Sports</em>. <br /><br />[via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/12/nintendo-wii-marketing-to-exceed-200-million/">Joystiq</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/13/nintendo-to-launch-200-million-dollar-ad-campaign/">Nintendo to launch 200 million dollar ad campaign</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 13 Nov 2006 08:00:00 EST. Like, $75 to $85 a pop? Well, you can clear that space in your brain, as Sony has announced first-party launch titles <em>Resistance</em> and <em>Genji</em> will be priced at &yen;5980 (about $50 USD), as will future first-party title <em>MotorStorm</em>. Third-parties have already announced higher prices, like Sega's &yen;7140 asking price for <em>Sonic</em> and <em>Sega Golf Club</em>.<br /><br />Of course, this is commensurate with US pricing for Xbox 360 titles, where first-party titles go for $50 and third-party titles fetch the princely sum of $60. Of course, the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/08/03/emergence-day-emerges-as-gasp-nov-12/">announcement</a> that the Microsoft-published, but not developed, <em>Gears of War</em> will command the higher $60 was met with some mild hissing.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/09/26/ps3-game-prices-at-launch-same-as-xbox-360-game-prices-at-lau/">According</a> to Sony's own SonyStyle website, both first- and third-party games are going to be going for the full $60 in the US. Is this another case where Japan lucks out and gets the goods for less (like their <a href="http://culture.joystiq.com/2006/09/21/surprise-ps3-news-from-tgs/">$425 PS3</a>), or has Sony not yet finalized their software pricing? As reliable as retail websites usually are for getting the scoop on video game news (uhhh), we're gonna wait this one out until Sony gives us the <em>official</em> official word ... like they just did Japan.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/10/09/japanese-first-party-ps3-games-5980-50-usd/">Japanese first-party PS3 games ¥5980 ($50 USD)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 09 Oct 2006 14:15:00 EST. Regardless of all the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/07/19/loco-roco-takes-over-japanese-subways/">advertising</a> and the special <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/06/15/loco-roco-bundle-releasing-in-japan/"><em>Loco Roco</em> bundles</a>, the game simply <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/07/19/loco-roco-goes-for-the-gold-and-comes-back-in-7th-place/">hasn't sold too well</a>. In fact, the game has been doing so poorly that it's already available in bargain bins for a low price of 1980 yen (about $18). Maybe Sony should reconsider making games for the PSP and focus solely on making brain games and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/07/31/ds-cookbook-a-japanese-hit/">cooking programs</a>.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://kotaku.com/gaming/top/japan-hates-locoroco-190821.php">Kotaku</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/08/01/japan-not-loco-for-loco-roco/">Japan not loco for Loco Roco</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 01 Aug 2006 01:09:00 EST.
