Each month, Nintendo will release a classic game at a special $.30 price, for 30 days until the next eligible game debuts. Today, Nintendo released the schedule for the discount promotion:

 February 20: F-Zero (SNES)

March 20: Punch-Out!!! Featuring Mr. Dream (NES)

 April 17: Kirby's Adventure (NES)

 May 15: Super Metroid (SNES)

 June 12: Yoshi (NES)

 July 15: Donkey Kong (NES)

The Virtual Console doesn't officially launch on the Wii U until this spring, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata revealed during the latest Nintendo Direct event last week. Despite that, Balloon Fight as well as several other games can be acquired through the Wii U eShop.
Nintendo reveals exact dates for Wii U Virtual Console Trial Campaign games originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 28 Jan 2013 23:30:00 EST. Two days before the arrival of the 3DS Ambassador Program games, Nintendo of Japan has revealed the full list of ten NES (Famicom) games being released there. This could be the exact same list of games we get in North America and Europe -- all we know is that the initial five games were consistent worldwide.

The five games revealed today include Metroid, Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link, Yoshi's Egg, Mario Open Golf, and Wrecking Crew. In addition to those, Super Mario Bros., Balloon Fight, The Legend of Zelda, Donkey Kong Jr., and Ice Climber will be available for free, to anyone who qualified for the Ambassador Program by taking their 3DS to the eShop on time. And, of course, these will be followed by ten GBA games.

We imagine the interior of Nintendo's new headquarters in Redmond, Washington to embody the four quadrants it's divided into: Mario, Donkey Kong, Yoshi and Wario. Unfortunately, Nintendo wouldn't allow press to take interior photos of the company's recently opened US headquarters, citing "security concerns," so we just don't know. Nor do any images exist of the "gigantic top-floor conference room" that's appropriately named "The Master Sword;" though, according to Techflash, it's said to resemble a Wall Street-style conference room more than anything you'd find in a Hyrulian office -- the 75,000 square feet of greenery on the roof would likely make Link feel more at home.

As you can see above, Nintendo of America head Reggie Fils-Aime and Nintendo worldwide head Satoru Iwata were hilariously joined by Washington Governor Christine Gregoire and her friends the Mario brothers for the building's opening ceremonies last week. "Hopefully this new building will help [employees] to be even more creative and productive, and continue to put smiles on the faces of our consumers," Iwata said of the new HQ. The beautiful facility -- detailed in several photos here -- is said to house 650 staff members. No official number of hidden Yoshis has been given.
Nintendo of America opens new Redmond HQ originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 20 May 2010 12:45:00 EST. The side-scrolling segment of the game shown here requires Yoshi to float from Blimp Fruit to Blimp Fruit to stay aloft, and even relies on Yoshi's flutter jump to navigate between platforms around the stage.

We can't help but notice that the stage itself is shaped like a cylinder. In fact, you might describe the level as "tubular."
Continue reading Super Mario Galaxy 2 trailer floats in

Super Mario Galaxy 2 trailer floats in originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 14 May 2010 18:15:00 EST.
Let's all just agree that the above laptop decal is awesome. Created by LapTatt and available on Etsy for a paltry $14, it's just about the greatest Nintendo-themed laptop decal we've ever seen (not that there have been too many). Admittedly, it seems designed with the Apple logo in mind -- especially considering Yoshi's taste for brightly colored fruit -- but we imagine it would work just as well with almost any laptop logo.

And, if Yoshi and baby Mario don't do it for you, you could always pick up a Kirby decal (in black or white) for only $8. See it after the break.

Continue reading Yoshi and Kirby decals eat your laptop logo

Yoshi and Kirby decals eat your laptop logo originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 15 Dec 2009 22:00:00 EST.
It's that time again, everybody: time to sheepishly visit Burger King every day and buy a Kids' Meal for Nintendo freebies, all while trying to shut out thoughts of how disappointed your father would be to see you like this. Shame, shame.

The fast food chain is giving away a bunch of different toys based on the Wii and its games, and all it wants in return is cash and a willingness to clog up your own arteries. We like the "Chain Chomp Launcher" the best, though the "Float and Go Boo" and "Light-Up Luma" are also nice. Plus, we can always keep telling ourselves we'll sell all this on eBay in the future for a small fortune. Yes, that'll do: it's an investment in our future. Pictures and details of all ten follow the break.
Continue reading Burger King offering free Wii toys in exchange for money, good health

Burger King offering free Wii toys in exchange for money, good health originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 04 Dec 2008 21:10:00 EST. Was it fond memories? Was it a deeper connection with those who I love? Was it several containers of leftovers? Sure, I received a fair share of those, but the most significant thing I received this Thanksgiving was the flu.

I should have known. At least five different folks I saw over the course of the day claimed to be recovering from some form of the dreaded virus. Sure enough, by Friday evening I was sweating and freezing at once, aching all over, and debating on which end to point at the toilet (too much?).

Whenever I get sick, I tend to feel very isolated. While everyone else was out enjoying their four-day weekend, I was tethered to the bed. But it didn't take long for me to realize that I'm certainly not alone. Everyone gets sick sooner or later, and no one is truly immune. In fact, even our video game counterparts have their fair share of sicknesses that affect their goals. And thankfully, just like said counterparts, the infections are usually brief. Here's our Top 5 sicknesses to avoid.

NEXT >>

The Top 5 is a weekly feature that provides us with a forum to share our opinions on various aspects of the video game culture, and provides you with a forum to tell us how wrong we are. Remember last night when we broke into spontaneous discussion about Yoshi during our weekly Game Night assembly? Oh, that's right, you weren't there for some lame reason, opting instead to race computer-controlled players in a sad, lonely session of Mario Kart's single player Grand Prix. For shame. Just know that you missed a hell of a time, and although Yoshi was only mentioned in passing (i.e. the word "Yoshi" was typed once or twice), you still should have been there to see it happen. Maybe next Thursday, then?

But isn't it high time we payed tribute to Mario's egg-dispensing, always-hungry dinosaur steed? Yoshi has been around since the prevalence of big, bulky cartridges, and while he has not always played a large role in Mario's adventures, his lovable character has spawned a handful of spinoff titles that exist almost entirely without Mario's help (well, sort of--only one of the Yoshi games have "Mario" in the title). Our new gallery spotlights Yoshi then & now, detailing all of his starring roles in between. Now saddle up, unfurl your tongue and gobble down everything in sight.
Wahey! Yeah, we know that Japan (generally speaking) gets the most excellent items when compared to elsewhere, but listen here, bub: it's free stuff. We're not about to complain, and nor should you (if you want to feel sorry for somebody, Australia's Club Nintendo scheme has gone AWOL, and check out South Africa's piss-poor Stars Catalogue).

Anyway, as these are happy times for North Americans, we thought we'd reflect on some of the bestest Club Nintendo gifts and trinkets from both Japan and Europe to date -- some of which could end up in the U.S.!

We were bowled over by the last batch of sprite/real-life art we posted, but this new material, from DeviantARTist RETROnoob (who, at just 16, has a more impressive grip on Photoshop than most of us supposed grown-ups) takes the biscuit whole biscuit tin whole damn biscuit aisle. As we mentioned last time, this is pretty much what our daydreams look like, and we expect yours also. Yes, they do. Admit it! You're a bit odd too! Ha!

Advance Wars, Yoshi's Island, Donkey Kong, Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario Kart: they're all here, as well as many more at RETROnoob's gallery. And here's the really, really important bit -- they come in wallpaper dimensions (or 1024 x 768, at least). Head past the break for more.

Well, that's nice. This week's Virtual Console releases aren't a total bust like the past few weeks have kind of been, as one of this blogger's favorite childhood games is available. We can't wait until after 9am PT, so we can get our grubby little mitts on these downloads.

This week's Virtual Console releases are:

Yoshi's Cookie (NES, 1 - 2 players, 500 Wii Points)

Bases Loaded (NES, 1 - 2 players, 500 Wii Points)

Be sure to stop by later for our video coverage of this week's Virtual Console games.
VC Monday Madness: Yoshi's Cookie and Bases Loaded originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 07 Apr 2008 09:45:00 EST.
Spoiler alert: Video shows every playable Brawl character

Serving the fans out there who're determined to watch every bit of Super Smash Bros. Brawl code executed before the game ever hits the US, Youtuber Zero9teen has posted a video collection of nearly every jeer from all the characters in the game. We say "nearly" because there are a few secret taunts, like the Japanese-heavy Lylat Cruise chats, that still need to be found and added to this compilation. Luigi pretty much steals the show (08:15), but the rest of the video is worth watching for Zero Suit Samus's plasma whip tricks (01:45) and Yoshi's cute antics (04:35)!

[Via NeoGAF]
More Brawl taunts than you can shake a mocking stick at originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 06 Feb 2008 16:00:00 EST. Artoon is in the news right now for the Mistwalker-assisting work of founder (and Sonic the Hedgehog character designer) Naoto Oshima. But before Oshima was designing blocky, vacant-eyed adventurers, he served as producer on a fairly high-profile Nintendo project: Yoshi's Island DS.

In case you have yet to see how the creator of Blinx: The Time Sweeper handled the sequel to one of the most beloved Mario games ever, Amazon is giving you the chance to check out the game for a painless $15. The critics got a kick out of it, at least. And if you're going to buy one game about taking care of babies, it may as well be this one and not ... one of the others. But be quick about it: this deal expires at the end of the day.
Yoshi's Island for a Baby Mario-sized price originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 20 Dec 2007 15:00:00 EST. We do love our limited-edition DS systems -- even (maybe especially) when they're Phat. There's nothing like the combination of out-of-production hardware and extremely rare colorways to drive our interest and eBay prices. This "Hot Summer" Yoshi DS was part of a series of six wireframe-emblazoned systems available only in the summer of 2005, and only to Club Nintendo members. Only 200 of these Yoshi systems were produced.

And now it's available to anyone with $500. If you truly want to be rebellious and rock the Phat, this is totally the way to do it. By spending a ridiculous amount of money.

[Via GameSniped]
A Hot Summer Yoshi DS for the cold winter originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 14 Dec 2007 09:45:00 EST. We reached for him over the edge of the platform, watching as he fell further and further away until he was nothing more than a tiny green dot in the distance. In hysterics, we yelled out to him, Last-of-the-Mohicans style, "I will find you!"

After the thousandth time we nonchalantly discarded Yoshi, though, leaving an imprint of our boot on his dinosaur nose as we leaped to higher ground, we'd been too desensitized by his many sacrifices to regret any one particular death. Sometimes, we even celebrated it: "That's what you get, you little jerk. That's what you get for making us chase you around and lose our feather."

But this faux motivational poster, spotted at Aeropause, calls our attention back to the cruelty and sadness of the technique. Seeing those teary eyes and outstretched arms is killing us inside. It's all made worse by Mario's refusal to even turn around and acknowledge his friend's ill-fated demise. The Koopa Paratroopa flying away in the background is clearly upset with the whole scene. We wouldn't be surprised if the event haunted him for the rest of his life, eventually leading him to alcohol and drug abuse.

[Via Aeropause]
Yoshi to Mario: 'I thought we were friends' originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 05 Dec 2007 14:15:00 EST. You know what your Christmas tree needs? More tongue -- and by that, we mean more Yoshi. Luckily, poorlulu of Etsy has your back; you can get all the ornamental wool <strike>tongue</strike> Yoshi that you need ... or even a Mario, if you so prefer.

We do not, however, recommend that you lick or otherwise ingest the Yoshi. Update: Sorry, folks. I ended up getting home very late last night and was way too tired to attempt the video. I'll try to get it up as soon as I can today. Thanks for your patience.

Sadly, we don't have video for you at the moment (yours truly has a sporting event to attend and I ran into some video editing problems), but when I get back, you can bet I'll be uploading the video (however late that may be). So, you have something to look forward to if you are going to be up that late (or something to look forward to when you get up in the morning). Or, whatever. You just have something to look forward to.
Continue reading VC Monday Madness video wrap-up 9/17/07 [update 1]

VC Monday Madness video wrap-up 9/17/07 [update 1] originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 17 Sep 2007 18:07:00 EST. We're always glad to see a N64 title release on the Virtual Console, as there are plenty of titles from that system that we feel deserve another play. Sadly, though, this week's releases don't include any of those N64 games. Instead, we're presented with a bunch of games that aren't all that notable.

This week's Virtual Console releases are:

Yoshi's Story (N64, 1 player, 1000 Wii Points)

Super Thunder Blade (Sega Genesis, 1 player, 800 Wii Points)

World Class Baseball (Turbografx16, 1-2 players, 600 Wii Points)

VC Monday Madness: Yoshi's Story, Super Thunder Blade and World Class Baseball originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 17 Sep 2007 09:45:00 EST. In checking out the weekly wi-fi stats, one user over at GAF noticed that two offline titles had shown up in the findings. Utilizing a user-created program, it was found that Nintendogs connected to wi-fi 6 different times and Yoshi's Island connected 4 times over two different days.

Now, whether this is misinterpreted information or the first signs of a re-issuing of these games with wi-fi compatibility is anyone's guess. What we wonder about, however, is if these games are re-issued, will anyone pick them up?
Nintendogs and Yoshi's Island going Wi-Fi? originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 28 Aug 2007 14:00:00 EST. Today's update over at the dojo provides us with a look at Yoshi's Final Smash maneuver: Super Dragon. Here, Yoshi grows the giant wings you see above and can fly about the battlefield, spitting out a jet of fire. He can also, as you, again, see above, spit out fireballs. It only lasts for short time, however, as Yoshi then loses his wings and reverts back to his normal form.

Dojo update: Yoshi's Final Smash originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 23 Aug 2007 11:15:00 EST. Do you love Yoshi? Do all your friends know you as "The Yoshinator" because you're always talking about how awesome Yoshi is? Is your Yoshi vs. Robocop fanfic well-regarded? Have you somehow managed not to pick up a Wii yet, even though it's the future home of the Yoshi-fied Super Smash Bros. Brawl?

If so, you're probably already cracking open your Emergency Yoshi Gear Fund to bid on this custom-painted Wii. The only thing that would make this better would be the release of Kart Fighter for Virtual Console. Today's Dojo update reveals the Footstool Jump technique. Basically, it's possible for players to use their enemies as a sort of springboard now, provided that the jumping player has impeccable timing. And, with Smash Bros. often putting us on the edge of levels, fighting our enemies, we imagine we'll have the opportunity to deny many a hopeful player who've been recently knocked off the side of said level and trying to jump back on, with this maneuver. It looks as if once you squish your opponent, they'll be stunned, resulting in an instant death for them and a fond memory for you, should our described scenario become a reality for yourself.

You can see some more images of the maneuver being demonstrated in our gallery below.

Dojo update: Footstool Jump technique originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 26 Jul 2007 15:25:00 EST. Today's dojo update brings us the character profile for series veteran Yoshi. We remember many a friendship being destroyed over his Egg Roll attack. In a bitterly tough release week like this one, we hoped to be able to count on the Virtual Console for some classics. However, it looks like we'll be settling for "decent." We're sorry, VC, we don't mean to put so much pressure on you, we know it's not your fault.

Mach Rider (NES, 1 player, 500 Wii Points): If you don't remember this one, think of it as a combination of Road Blasters and Hang-On, with a color palette that appears to have been selected at random, possibly with the use of darts.

Yoshi (NES, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points): It's a shame that Yoshi doesn't have a lot to do in his own eponymous game. Most of the time, he sits on the sidelines, watching a fat Italian guy switching plates of mushrooms and egg shells. While that's admittedly a pretty interesting way to spend an afternoon, it still feels like kind of a ripoff.

Air "Zonk" (TurboGrafx16, 1 player, 600 Wii Points): If Bonk was a complete tool and had a lightning bolt on his forehead, he would be Zonk. If Bonk's Adventure was a pretty decent shoot 'em up, it would be Air "Zonk." Side bonus, Air "Zonk" offers one of the rare opportunities to be part of something called "Team Cool," which seems to be about the best thing you can do. If you're still on the fence, know that Nintendo says that "Air 'Zonk' is filled with humor, made evident by the wacky theme song that plays when you post a huge score or when your game is over." Sold!

Just as we were talking about the difficulty of scoring Nintendo merchandise, this auction pops up on eBay. With bobblehead figurines of Luigi, Mario, Bowser and Yoshi, we find ourselves wishing we had quicker reflexes, as the auction has already closed. All figurines ended up going to one lucky individual who chose the option to buy it now for the fair price of 39.99 GBP.

If you know of any cool eBay auctions, be sure to send us a tip!

[Via GameSniped]
eBay alert: Nintendo bobblehead figurines originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 20 Jun 2007 16:25:00 EST. Not only does it allow us to play games that never get released in the US, but it also gives us freedom to choose the cheapest version of worldwide-release games. Renchi.com has marked down a load of DS games, and there's plenty of stuff for US gamers to enjoy.

First, the Japanese versions of US games. You can get Yoshi Touch & Go (Catch! Touch! If you want a uniquely Japanese experience, there's a bunch of stuff including Mawasunda!!, a lot of miscellaneous non-games and puzzle games (including an amusing-looking coloring game), and a nice selection of D3's Simple Series stuff. Sure, it's cute, and it communicates the game well. Of course, we love the tongue, and the addition of the pink DS Lite is nice -- since pink is typically associated with girls (and, of course, real men who aren't afraid to wear it), there's a subtle messages that this game is girl-approved. Since we suggested it in lieu of a few others recently, we're all sorts of down with that impression. But all is not rainbows and coin-filled bricks in Nintendo land, despite the new ad's positive qualities.

Here's our beef: when it comes to the US market for this title, where are the ads like this one? When the two are watched side by side, is it any wonder that Americans seem more likely to push the DS aside as a kiddy system? Today's ad seems aimed at a younger audience, while the UK ad is more polished and adult -- and includes the same game (though others as well). It's hard to move beyond a stereotype and pick up a new audience when you promote the very image for which you're already famous. Gamers know that where there is Yoshi, there is typically goodness, so there's no need to sell to us ... but what about everyone else? Where's our saucy blonde to prove that happy-funtime-Yoshi action is good for everyone?

Sure, there have been (and will be) plenty of DS ads that don't seem quite so kid-centric. But these are in the same pre-holiday advertising window, so we thought it might be interesting to compare them -- particularly since the same game is in each. Which do you think is most effective? Will today's ad manage to sell the game to a new audience, or do you think an ad aimed at a different market would be better? Do you think the American ad is actually as effective or moreso than the UK DS spot? Tell us what you think!
Continue reading Yoshi's Island ad, now with more tongue

Yoshi's Island ad, now with more tongue originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 24 Nov 2006 11:00:00 EST.
