July NPD: Wii climbs to the top, PS3 overcomes 100K hump
Upon first viewing the latest US video game sales data from GameDaily BIZ, we instinctively exclaimed "July NPD!" and shook our heads in dismay. "No, I never lie," replied the NPD, its anthropomorphized form struggling to escape the confines of a bad pun. "The Wii did in fact beat the DS in a month that saw overall industry sales climb to a staggering $925.5 million dollars. The PlayStation 3's clearance sale also gave it the push it needed to defeat the GBA and break through the 100,000 unit barrier, though it still trailed slightly behind the Xbox 360. So much for those analysts, eh?"
And so we all laughed, cracked open a few beers and watched some American football. According the top ten in software sales (presented after the break), a good deal of gamers appreciate the sport. Despite having access to a considerably smaller user base than the PS2, the Xbox 360 version of NCAA Football 08 reigned supreme, no doubt thanks to the system's magical attach rate.

so much for analyst prediction.. That Patcher guy needs to retire now..

The most suprised were Sony officials and their PR guys.
They didn't even had prepared SPIN press relases with:
"how-many-$$$-ps2+ps1+ps3+psp+bluray-players-have-made-for-us-we-are-THE-BEST"
DonWii @ Aug 23rd 2007 8:30PM
WOW. Wii sold better than June, which was a 5 week period.
Mal F4cti0n @ Aug 23rd 2007 9:28PM
June was a five week period? What are you talking about?
They are monthly sales, which means June has 30 days and July has 31.
31>30
July had one more day of sales in that figure.
Nothing to do with weeks. MONTHLY sales, M-O-N-T-H-L-Y
hvnlysoldr @ Aug 23rd 2007 9:38PM
Incorrect. The monthly sales are taken from business weeks. June had 5 business weeks and July had 4 business weeks.
groovy guy @ Aug 23rd 2007 9:42PM
It was a 5 week sales period, don't be arrogant when you reply.

haha, even with the ps3 fire sale and some people waiting until august's 360 sale, the 360 still outsold ps3? funny

WOW! go nintendo! oooh i feel funny... these sales figures are making me get a "solid snake"! ;)

And there you have it, for the rest of this "Console Race" Those are going to be the standings. Microsoft again in 2nd place.
WiseGuy @ Aug 23rd 2007 8:35PM
Analysts.... who needs them?? Wonder how many units 360 will move come September 25th??
MYPS3KilledMy360 @ Aug 24th 2007 1:37AM
not that many. most of the hardcore fans that bought there 360s early are the ones that pre ordered that 4 million i say at least 65%. but we will see how many consoles are sold but i cant deny records on games sold will be broken. why do the people over at qj.net say that the wii has passed the 10 million bench mark set by the 360 WTF S:/ hasn the 360 been at 10 million since the holiday season so doesnt that meen the sale are still sucking. i clearly dont believe these numbers, one says PS3 sells more than 360 this past couple of months, the other say 360 at 11.5 million, Wii brakes 10 million and surpasses 360, ps3 at 4.5 million or was it 4 million sold to stores, i wont believe anything until the numbers are written in stone at the end of 07. next thing you no sony is at 6 million, Wii is at 13 million, 360 at 12 million.
Jake @ Aug 24th 2007 7:35AM
You just made no sense. Halo 3 will give the 360 a huge sales boost. GT5 in the US and FFXIII in Japan will give the PS3 a huge boost next year. That is just the way it works. Not everyone has bought a 360 yet and the majority of the millions of people playing Halo 2 are doing it on an Xbox. They might want to play 3.
Knight Marquise @ Aug 24th 2007 1:05PM
Myps3killed..blah..blah...blah
You're such a looser PS3 troll. MS has already stated that half of 360 owners were not xbox owners. Half my friends have already preordered Halo 3, but will be picking up their 360 in September, because they have kept on playing Halo 2 on the xbox.
but..but..teh pow3r of teh cell..but...
You're pathetic.

Nintendo to win this gen.
It seems.
Mr Awesomer @ Aug 23rd 2007 9:02PM
"Nintendo to win this gen."
It's a LAST generation machine, thus it's competing against the likes of Xbox, PS2 and it's fat cousin the Cube.
Xbox360 and PS3 are THIS generation machines.
James @ Aug 23rd 2007 9:04PM
That kind of reply is up there with ¨Wii is a fad¨
I know it must hurt. It's only a games system after all just buy one!
vagrantA @ Aug 23rd 2007 9:06PM
James, Title it whatever "Gen" you want, the wii is kicking ass regardless.
Anam @ Aug 23rd 2007 9:08PM
@Mr Awesomer
That's kind of like saying that a scrawny kid doesn't count as part of this generation of children. The word "generation" only implies the general time period in which it was a part of, it doesn't imply that it is of equal quality as other members of said generation.
If someone said "the Wii is the winner of the HD console war," then you would have a point.
Mr Awesomer @ Aug 23rd 2007 9:27PM
I wasn't speaking of general time frame generations, I was speaking of technology generations.
Anam @ Aug 23rd 2007 9:33PM
"I wasn't speaking of general time frame generations, I was speaking of technology generations."
Yes, but the person you originally quoted wasn't talking about technological generations and I'm pretty sure you know it. Just admit that you have no point.
Mr Awesomer @ Aug 23rd 2007 9:38PM
"Just admit that you have no point."
This is the Internet... no one does.
hvnlysoldr @ Aug 23rd 2007 9:40PM
Everyone seems to have forgotten the Hyper Scan is also a 7th generation console like Wii, PS3, and X360.
GoldenS1104 @ Aug 23rd 2007 9:40PM
Anam = WIN
colin @ Aug 23rd 2007 9:46PM
win what exactly? your silly fanboy quarrels? if you are truly a videogamer, you would play games and not consoles. the ps3 and 360 aren't going anywhere anytime soon, and nothing you say will do anything about it. this is about the stupidest thing you can argue over. i have a 360, and love it. i will buy a wii when mario galaxy comes out, and i will buy a ps3 when MGS4 comes out. console sales aren't everything either. there's plenty to be said for attachment rates.
GoldenS1104 @ Aug 23rd 2007 9:52PM
My point wasn't that he was winning an arguement over which console was better, my point was he squashed the stupid fanboy comment. I'm against fanboyism. Before the current gen of consoles I was planning on getting a PS3. Then, when I saw the Brawl trailer, I decided to get a Wii too. Eventually I decided that I didn't like the direction Sony was going with their console so I decided to get a 360 instead of a PS3. If I were made of money I'd gladly buy all of the consoles because they all offer great exclusives. I'll stick with my 360 and Wii for now though.
Anam @ Aug 23rd 2007 9:58PM
"This is the Internet... no one does."
Good point.
vagrantA @ Aug 23rd 2007 10:22PM
Sorry my comment was for Mr. Awesomer, not James.
Jake @ Aug 23rd 2007 10:58PM
I think Nintendo is not directly competing with MS and Sony. It is just such a different machine. It is proving that it appeals to a larger audience, though.
colin @ Aug 23rd 2007 11:19PM
@GoldenS1104,
i was referring to james' comment, not yours.
sorry for the confusion
GoldenS1104 @ Aug 23rd 2007 11:56PM
That's ok colin. As you said, it was just a misunderstanding. :)
vidGuy @ Aug 24th 2007 1:14AM
Nintendo wins by making tons of cash and taking video games in new (but not always exciting) directions. Microsoft wins by being the leader in traditional progression and widening their appeal to a more mainstream audience. Sony wins with steady PS2 sales and a building PS3 fanbase. It'll be interesting to see how Sony's two-console stance keeps them in the game throughout this generation.
James @ Aug 24th 2007 6:26AM
Wait, Microsoft are going into the mainstream? I think you're mixing up 360 with Wii...
Either way. Yes I own all consoles (cept a PSP which I sold on), but I care about sales figures as devs start to realise they can't take the success of the Wii lightly. If they want to make a nice little profit a game on the Wii (since, on average they're cheaper to produce for anyways) makes sense.
It's also a bit amazing to see a company's console system in a critical situation - to suddenly jump to an unarguable first.
vidGuy @ Aug 24th 2007 9:11AM
Yes, they're going more mainstream. They aren't hitting that mom-and-grandma casual market, but they are widening their demographic. Many gamers who were PS2-only last gen are looking to the 360 as their next gen platform. 360 looks to have a wider game library (instead of just shooters and sports games), and it's the preferred of the powerhouse systems.
It's likely that MS will get a much larger (by 15% or so) slice of the install base pie this gen.
Kaemon @ Aug 23rd 2007 8:36PM
$380,340,000 last month spent on VIDEO GAME CONSOLES. (Assuming that the 360 was all $400 and the PS3 was all $500, which it wasn't, but close enough) My goodness... thats lots, and lots, of money. I'm quite amazed at how they do it each month.
Bluebrake @ Aug 23rd 2007 8:37PM
Weren't the analysts predicting PS3 would outsell 360 worldwide, not just in the US? Which I believe it did, quite handily.
http://www.vgchartz.com/hwcomps.php?cons1=Wii®1=All&cons2=PS3®2=All&cons3=X360®3=All&weekly=1
DonWii @ Aug 23rd 2007 8:39PM
NO. Analysts predict US sales, not WW. You could spin it that way, but that is not what Analysts were predicting.
ExMcloud @ Aug 23rd 2007 9:23PM
And since the PS3 was expected to outsell the 360 world wide thats not even an argument...Did the PS3 outsell the Wii or the DS world wide? Thats an argument...Not a very good one since the Wii cost 400 dollars less but still an argument..
deaftly @ Aug 23rd 2007 8:37PM
so much for ps3 outselling the 360
Matt B @ Aug 23rd 2007 10:33PM
The 360 can't outsell a 7 year old console, but it can a 1 year old console. Congrats?
vidGuy @ Aug 24th 2007 1:17AM
haha, matt, yeah the 360 outsold its direct competitor and was outsold by a 7 year old console that's $300 chepear. That must be /so/ degrading, huh?
royce @ Aug 24th 2007 4:28AM
Matt when you guys make that argument, you realize that the ps2 outsold the ps3 as well. It's not really a great point.
ComradeTrotskii @ Aug 23rd 2007 8:40PM

Nintendo has owned everyone at this point. I mean did any of us think the Wii would be in this situation? I thought it would sell a little better than the Cube. Oh well... now how about some games?
Snatcher @ Aug 24th 2007 12:58AM
Nintendo hasn't seen a dime of my money. What awesome game are you Wii lovers playing? I'm honestly asking because you guys so fervently stick up for the console. What did you play that made you say dang, now this is an awesome system?
Mini games are for the XBOX live arcade. $5 not $50. Even if you do get to swing your wand like a tard. Before you get your panties in a bunch understand that I'm asking you Joystiq readers who should be pretty hard core gamers. I know why old people and kids like it. I wonder why you guys do... Please enlighten me.
Thanks

w00t!
I bought a Wii in July.
I would of bought one earlier but could never find one.
vidGuy @ Aug 24th 2007 9:22AM
@Snatcher,
Well I still enjoy Wii Sports with some friends every once in a while. I played through Twilight Princess and Super Paper Mario. Granted they are both GC at heart but TP is much better on Wii due to the controls. Madden and Tiger Woods are fantastic. Graphics suck (not much better than PS2) but the controls make the game new and exciting :) SSX Blur and Mario Strikers Charged are impressive on the Wii. I also have a few GC games that I bought for cheap and there's always a good VC download. LttP and Super Metroid deserved another run through.
Yes, I'm a 'hardcore gamer', though I hate that term. I own a 360 and play it regularly too. But the Wii is in a different league. Graphics are many times disappointing, and I sometimes find myself deciding between the 360 and Wii version based on graphics versus controls+features. Madden on the 360 is gorgeous and has much better online, but I got it for the Wii because of the controls that make the game pick up and play for anyone.
It boils down to this: if I want to lock myself in my room and play into the night, I turn on the 360. If I want to bring some friends in and play for a few hours or if I want to play one of Nintendo's franchises, I turn on the Wii. I don't think the Wii is perfect for hardcore gamers by itself. It's just missing too much. But it is a fantastic complement to the 360 (or PS3 if that's your choice).
For the record, not one $50 game I own is centered around minigames. Madden has them, but they are just the training drills and they are actually a hell of a lot of fun with a few friends.
Adv2k1 @ Aug 23rd 2007 8:50PM
ha ha ps3 didn't sell even with its sale. Now Sony has to decided to either continue making money and keep making ps2s or stop production and thus force people to get ps3s. Who cares if PS2 has sold 1 billion unites worldwide if PS3 is suffering because its little brother is too cool thats a big problem.
PSN: ummfada @ Aug 24th 2007 10:20AM
What... it didn't sell, so why'd they put a number?
