I'll summarize his points.

- Japan didn't do anything bad to warrant a video game that targets them as evil.
- I'm very intelligent and I will use this 'debate' to show how amazing Japan is
- I will back pedal and mention Arabs of today to deflect the stupidity of my thoughts
- Killing 35 million Chinese + many Koreans is nothing compared to the killing of some Japanese video game enemies
- If Japan invades and rapes, kills and tortures Chinese and Korean, that's ok with me as long as they are not portrayed as evil by the world.

I would contend the Japanese need a hell of a lot more demonizing, not less.

Have your self a read read about the raping of Nanking, the Burma Railway, or the Bataan Death March.

The Japanese were a hell of a lot worse than the Nazis, and I for one think it is about time people start realizing that.

Your article illustrates your anger at the negative portrayal of the Japanese, but keep in mind that the Japanese slaughtered 2,402 Americans on an early December morning. My grandfather was in US navy in the Pacific theater, and I respect and honor that. He experienced equally disturbing events as your Japanese family may have experienced. Putting Japanese in internment camps is not even shown in this game, nor is that precaution ever glorified. In any point of view, the opposing party is always "demonized" to some point. I'm sure the Allied forces were feared amongst the Axis powers. You can't expect a game where the Japanese will be portrayed the same as the Americans, because it wouldn't tell a story accurately or interestingly enough.

Man after reading those links, I can't believe the OP still thinks he is just bringing up debate.

I'm glad this is exposing how bad the japanese really were. Nazis gassed the Jews. Japanese raped, tortured, and humiliated their victims.

Only reason why Nazis are better known is because we are from the West. Like how we learn about Rome and Greece but almost nothing about China's dynasties.

Demonize the Japanese.
Bring them all to justice for they still believe they did nothing wrong.

correction:
i am not saying you should not be sensitive towards your heritage, but you should not discount the harsh facts of the brutality of the japanese back then

As long as it's based on historical events then I don't see the problem. I don't think that every form of entertainment that chooses this subject matter should have to delve into all aspects of it. Not very practical.

I would suggest some therapy to help you work through these issues. It over-sensitivity surprises me.

The Japanese soldiers were "monsters" in WWII. Sorry if you don't want to deal with that. Gamers should stick with OK fake violence like maiming aliens with chainsaws I guess.

Americans have no reason to apologize for the bomb, and the people involved with it at the time sure felt no need to either. Invading Japan would have cost MILLIONS of lives on both sides and would have still destroyed terrain and livelihoods for generations.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but didn't we drop papers all over those towns to tell them to get out cause something really really bad was gonna be dropped on them? If they weren't smart enough to get out of dodge... how is that America's fault. I harbor no bad feelings for the Japaneese people of today, but back in that time they were ruthless and cold... They started it by attacking pearl harbor with their little planes and little bombs... we ended it with our HUGE planes and we ten-upped (more than 1up) them with the bombs we dropped. That was LONG before most of us were even thought of. If people held grudges for stuff that happened to their ancesters, then everyone would hate everyone. Obviously every country has wronged some other country at one point in their history.

If it suddenly started raining papers that said your town was going to end and everything you ever worked for was going to be destroyed how does it make the bombing any better.
Don't try to justify it, it was a war crime and should be treated as such.

However, I do agree that most people will eventually get over it.

I don't know why we keep churning out these war games in general. Sure, it's fine if it's something completely fictional like Halo or Gears, but we keep putting out games based on REAL wars and REAL countries and it just adds to stereotypes and desensitizes murder.

I think the reason you are shocked about this game is that it's not your average, go to Europe and kill Nazis or go to Middle East and kill terrorists game. You have been desensitized to killing Nazis so you can't deal with this game about killing Japanese soldiers.

Thanks for the article. I bought COD4 and after playing it for a few hours I got fed up with the america can kill anyone and it is noble and if someone else does it its evil. I hear from friends that the gameplay is solid and if you emerse yourself in the game it is fun. But with games like halo and gears I don't have to hear the yeah USA BS and I can just shoot aliens instead. So this is why I am not buying COD:WAW and will continue to buy shooters where aliens and zombies are the evildoers that I am more than happy to eleminate in droves.

James, I fully agree with your well written editorial. I have bought every CoD since the beginning, but won't be buying WaW for the same reasons that you stopped playing the game.

For an excellent education and eye-opener on the injustices that Japanese-Americans went through during WWII, visit the museum at Manzanaar, California on the way to Mammoth Mountain. These proud United States CITIZENS never stopped loving the U.S., despite what they were put through by their own government.

While I do agree the scenes are a little intense, I do find you getting upset over the dehumanization of the Japanese, while caring nothing about the Germans laughable. The fact is the Japanese were brutal during WWII. They were brutal even before in 1937, or even 1932, or Hell, what about the occupation of Korea? What about the raping, torturing, slaughtering of millions of Chinese, Indochinese, Filipinos, and other Asiatic-Pacific peoples? What about the bayoneting of children in front of their families or the forced incest between families?

And lets not forget the Europeans and Indians. What about the executions of thousands of British, Australians, Dutch, Indian, and Americans?

I am sorry about how Japanese were treated in America during World War II, but the Japanese were just as(Or in my opinion, worse than the Germans in terms of what was done).

Again, I do agree the gore could have been toned down, but how the Japanese depiction disturbs you, but the German depiction doesn't, disturbs me for everyone is human, whether good or bad.

So, it's OK to demonize the Nazis because they were German Socialists but it's not OK to demonize the Japanese because they had the same skin as the author?

Ah, it all makes sense now.

How about this: the game is trying to be historically accurate. How about that.

I'm sorry the Japanese Americans were sent to camps, I really am. You can thank your Democratic leadership for that one. They've been breaking people down in the hyphenated American groups since the 30's.

That doesn't change anything about what happened in the Pacific Theater though, not at all. I haven't seen the game yet but the truth of what actually transpired at the hands of the Japanese is brutal, deal with it.

I guess the author did not play COD:4 since there were executions in the first five minutes of that also.
I have completed the one player campaign on COD:WaW and have yet to see actual footage of an assassination. I believe the author is WAY off base and it is sad this article could deter other people from purchasing the game.
I don't have the time or effort to go into why this article is just silly. It's a game. I think Gears is MUCH more violent. Guess I will say what I say to other people with these knee jerk reactions. Don't like it...don't buy it. I can do without hearing you whine between rounds about how you didn't want to kill the doggie.
I will not miss you. Last night there were 175,000 people online playing COD5. You are just one less noob to kill(in the game of course) in case you are that "deet de dee" to not understand.
