As expected, Sony Computer Entertainment has lowered the price of PlayStation 2 from $129 to $99, as of April 1. The move comes as the console enters its ninth year on sale in the US. That's a heck of a long life for a console, and the price drop will squeeze at least a couple more years out of it. There's a slew of games coming out for the PS2 this year, bringing the total number of games to almost 1,900, including more than 250 "Greatest Hits" games. Frugal gamers have a lot to choose from.
Assuaging fears that this is a mean April Fool's joke (which is the day the price is official), John Koller wrote on the PlayStation Blog, "This speaks to the technology and features that were packed into PlayStation 2 from the beginning, as well as to the ongoing support the platform enjoys from the publishing and retail communities and, well, all of you fans."
Of course, SCEA president Jack Tretton couldn't help but add, "Just as PlayStation 2 is delivering on a 10-year lifecycle and helped expand and solidify the DVD format for home entertainment along the way, we believe PlayStation 3 offers the same promise by helping secure the Blu-ray format and delivering unprecedented value as the total home entertainment solution for the next decade." We get it Jack, but can't we just celebrate with the NINETY-NINE DOLLAH PS2 for now?

John, sorry man, but you have got to be totally full of shit. Nobody would have 2 PS3's that both failed two times and sent them both for repairs totaling $600. That is just too unrealistic for me to believe.
Yeah, one broke and you paid for repair, ok, second one broke and you repaired it - thats fair enough, then the 3rd broke and thats when the story no longer makes any damn sense. Nobody in their right mind would have repaired two already repaired units for the same problem you already had paid 150 each to repair before. Especially considering that you barely use them.

He's not talking complete shit, the PS3 indeed has its share of quality problems like the Blu-Ray drive crapping out at least in older models and PS3 fanboys don't want to admit it. Sony needs to step up and fix it for free after warranty like MS with the RROD.
Ironically I thought buying a 360 with GTA4 would stress the system and it would eventually get RROD whereas my 60gb PS3's Blu-Ray drive crapped out after only two weeks of GTA4 whereas the Arcade 360 I bought is still running strong aside from the noisy as god awful hell DVD drive.

Who gives a processed food fart about this? Lets drop the PS3 . There are only a few games I want to play on that box and I'm not gonna pay a lot for it. Once the price drops maybe I'll buy one.

It's worth every penny.
As is your errorbox.
Difference is the PS3 is worth way more pennies.

oh ps2, how you were my favorite console last gen, all of that time and money i put into you.i am glad that you can now be enjoyed by even more people, yet am still disappointed that your older brother hates me, and refuses to get even 50 dollars cheaper.

no only the 21 million odd who have already bought the ps3.. NO one else will want it im sure your right.. Yes lets all run and buy a 360 so that it can give us the red ring of death or better yet an e74 error.

My 360 froze last night... three times. It's 2 weeks old. I love having all the consoles, but this allows me to say with certainty that PS3 owners get better quality for their dime.
When I am playing my PS3 I just expect it to work. When I'm on my 360 there is a constant paranoia in the back of my head the thing is going to blow up.

That took long enough! Wasn't it $150 like 4 years ago? This has got to be some sort of record long amount of time for a console to hit $99.
That said, you've got to hand it to Sony. They could have just killed the PS2 but they've graciously (and profitably) kept it going year after year.
10 year cycles though? Sure the PS1 wasn't discontinued until 2005, but everyone had moved onto the PS2 long before that. PS3... not so lucky. (But well built!)

You mean to tell me it wasn't $100 already?

I think at this period in time Sony should not be giving this much attention to the PS2. Yes the PS2 has a great library of titles at great prices but the PS3 is suppose to be the big dog. I am just exhausted by how Sony continues to just sadden me with how it is handling the PS3 system. :(

Yeah, there are 100 million people who have already bought PS2s, but there are a hell of of a lot more who haven't in the developing world. It makes perfect sense for Sony to drop the price globally so they get their foot in that door. A cheaper Playstation 2 + huge and varied library will probably do really well in places like South America and Eastern Europe.
But yes, they still need to drop the price of the PS3 and put back backward compatibility. Sooner rather than later, preferably.

I know all the numbers and you know what it sucks if another country never played it. Oh well. PS3 needs to be hitting PS2 numbers and the more Sony keeps pumping the PS2 over the PS3 then there is going to be sale figures problems. Like I said its just sad to see Sony concentrate to much on hardware that is way past its prime. The PS2 is going to sell with out any support because by now word of mouth carries that bad boy.

You have got to be kidding me with this console warriors bullshit.
"...easier to convince others to join the right side of the field"
"...stupidly overpriced that piece of shit really is"
"...As is your errorbox."
I have both these consoles and like them both, and I know the PS3 is not a POS from using the hell out of it like I have the 360. There is no right side. You all do know that the consoles don't care that you idolize them so much - they are not alive. You're not really fighting in the great console war that will save a generation. Give up on the weird bullshit and accept that competition in this industry gets us better products.

Idiots raise the PS2 50$ and lower the PS3 80, you will nullfiy the damage done on the PS3 being lowered and push more PS3s getting more money from game sales.

If it were possible, I would gladly pay the $99.99 for backwards compatibility in my PS3. The use of the dualshock 3 and video upscaling, combined with not needing to find room on my entertainment center for another device, is worth $100 to me.

It may be 99 bucks, but to make it work properly you'll need to buy a memory card and at least a game. That would be almost like paying for an Arcade 360... well, it would still be cheaper, but it's not that much of a difference...

Just go to Gamestop and buy some games. After he played Madden 05 for 2 weeks I say my brother got his 80 cents worth.

The price has already been $50 for quite some time on eBay. Is anyone really silly enough to pay premium prices for obsolete hardware?

Hooray! Now you only have to pay $100 for one of the features they removed from the PS3!

Sony should sell PS2 backwards compatibility for the PS3. There are a lot of games I'd like to try, but I'm not going to buy a PS2 to do it. Too much junk.

Yo Sprinkes my man, I know you hate the PS3 with a fiery burning passion but what do you think about the PS1 and PS2? BTW, I'm the "racist" Chin-Poh, still here baby just like you ,except I'm still on my 1st account. XD

I thought the news would be that That Sony lied and Uncharted 2, Infamous and God of War 3 were ready to ship today. If that were the case there would be a simultaneous scramble for wallets, followed by a huge surge of PS3 sales. Yeah right as if. Sony has slightly disappointed me with this news seeing that my system already has backwards capability.
