From the "be careful what you wish for" file, we've got the first details on the BioShock 2 multiplayer you all wanted so very much after the first game. You'll play as a Plasmid test subject working for Sinclair Solutions during the fall of Rapture as you battle other players in re-worked game locales like Kashmir Restaurant and Mercury Suites.
Victory over your opponents will yield experience that you can spend on new Plasmids, weapons and tonics. If you can take it, you can read all about the mode right here. The mode's being developed by Digital Extremes, which you likely remember for its work on Dark Sector.
... Hey, why do you all look so depressed? What? Us? No, we're not crying. Why would you *sniff* think that?

Dark Sector was a pretty cool game. The single player was anyways, never gave the mp a try.

DON'T DO THIS TAKE-TWO. This game is not meant to have multiplayer, and putting it in is just a stupid idea. It's borderline for Uncharted 2, but for Bioshock, it doesn't belong at all. I understand WHY they're doing it (people buy games instead of rent them if they have multiplayer), but i really wish they wouldn't.
How do i make one of those online petitions.....;)

Why couldn't they include that stuff in the single player as well? GODDAMMIT! >:(

They should just do a Call of Duty 4 system, using the plasmids as perks.

Nothing worse than useless tacked on multiplayer. Why is it so wrong to just make single player games, or co-op games. Not everything needs to have a worthless multiplayer mode tacked on.
It's like The Darkness - Great game, multiplayer was USELESS and a waste of achievements.
I know some of you will say "but you haven't played it yet", and that's true, but at absolutely NO point during Bioshock did I ever think "This would be great with multiplayer tacked on!!!" it was not needed, because Bioshock was a story driven single player game, and that's what made it stand out.
Also, I know I don't have to play it, but I just hope it doesn't turn out like other games where the wasted time and effort on the worthless multiplayer that no one touches could have been used to extend and better the single player, or "meat" of the game.
/rant mode deactivated.

the part about achievements is very true. i really enjoy getting achievements but what i don't enjoy is having to play a poorly made multilayer to get said achievements. not saying it WILL be bad i'm just saying i hope they still make all of the achievements in the single player a la call of duty 4 style.

I agree with you that Bioshock doesn't need multiplayer. However, there is an element of truth to the fact that the game had damn near zero replayability after you played through it once. One might play through it again to get the different ending depending on if you saved or harvested the little sisters but thats it. I would go as far as to say we didn't need a Bioshock sequel to start with. The story was magic, self contained and an instant classic.
The multiplayer portion is being outsourced to an external studio so you have two different teams crafting two different experiences for the same game. If the multiplayer turns out to be good and fun it gives the publisher another revenue stream (premium DLC) in addition to a longer shelf life and a greater chance that people will buy the game new.
I have alot of friends that feel if a game doesn't have some kind of multiplayer aspect (be it co-op or competitive) it's not worth paying full price for it. I would imagine alot of people feel that way which is why the multiplayer is being added in the first place.
Do we need multiplayer in Bioshock 2? No.
Is it going to hurt the single player experience? No.
Could it attract new people into the fold? Yes.

While true that the actual labor was outsourced, the money wasn't. Money is the engine and some of its power was diverted. Even if they "budgets" were seperate they aren't really, as it's still money that could have hired another level designer/writer/artist/programmer whatever.
But I really do mostly agree with you, I am not saying it's going to break the single player, I just think that's it's unnecessary. I mean I get the business aspect, but DLC levels and what not would also add a revenue stream.
But your most accurate comment would be that there was really no need for a damn sequel anyway, and honestly I don't even have high hopes for the core game.

How many cheevos were tied up in The Darkness multiplayer? I played it once and had fun. I read reviews that said it really sucked, which I likely would have ended up realizing if I'd tried it more. SeƱor ESC opines about it to this day :P Last time somebody brought this up got me to wondering if you can look up The Darkness live stats online, see how many folks are playing?
As I'm obliged to do whenever anyone mentions that game, I must say that game is SICKDIDDLES AWESOME

I agree, it's one of the most underrated games ever!
I have no idea if the multiplayer was actually worth a crap or not, for two reasons:
1: I wasn't really interested in it, the single player was what I wanted.
2: The few times I went in to it to see if it was any good, there was never a single soul online.

They could have created some cool modes like protect the sister. Or pick up different plasmids around, and you only get 1 at a time. You know, some objective based stuff instead of just death match.

Awesome news! I was worried that multiplayer would take away from development, but as they've gotten another team to do it then it probably won't impact the singleplayer.

I actually recall reading the review for Dark Sector, and even though the game took FOREVER to come out, it did get horrible reviews. People were just surprised mainly that with all the time they had to work on the game, there were still glaring mistakes that should have been ironed out a long time ago, that's all. You know what they say, don't judge a book by it's cover. Besides, who out there is really buying this game based on the quality (or lack thereof) of it's multiplayer component? Not me. I bought Bioshock 2 for the single player story, and I'll do the same for the sequel.

Ignore the average reviews it got and go rent it for the weekend. I bet you end up liking it more than you thought you would. The campaign keeps getting better and better as your powers grow through out.

Personally my peeve with Bioshock 2 multi-player is the corresponding trophies that have now become imminent. This will ruin a lot for the very specific and narrowed down group of trophy whores that enjoy a good story. A similar situation happened with GTA IV. Not everyone is so social and I think some games should consider that.

With all the talk about games gettting tacked on multiplayer, Bioshock was a great example of how to make a rock solid single player only game. It didn't need multiplayer. Look, I'm still gonna buy this game, but will I play the multiplayer parts more than once or twice? Doubtful. Developers need to look at the longevity of a product before doing something like this. I also can't see why Uncharted 2 needs multiplayer for the exact same reasons. If we want multiplayer games, there are already too many great examples out there (COD4, COD WaW, Left 4 Dead, Halo 3, Gears of War 2, Killzone 2, Resistance 2 and coming soon Modern Warfare 2, MAG). This tacked on and uninspired multiplayer stuff needs to stop and developers of certain STORY driven games need to focus their attention on that.

Everyone who is saying "If you don't like that they have multiplayer then dont play it, it's not affecting you" is incredibly naive. Devs only have so much time to put into a game, and coupled with the fact that this one isn't being made by the REAL Bioshock team (KennyL), this crippling of the singleplayer game's resources only makes the prospect of Bioshock 2 bleaker. Plus, Bioshock didn't exactly have good shooting mechanics (on 360 at least), so it won't lend itself well unless they change the gameplay (which could also be catastrophic).
In short: Bad idea.

Okay the thing about this is the first Bioshock didn't have multiplayer because before 2k picked them up, Irrational didn't exactly have a lot of money. Now that they have what I would assume to be unlimited resources, I'm not worried in the least about how either the multiplayer or single player will turn out.

You folks are acting like this is the end of the bloody world. Gasp! A game I wanted has a new play mode I am unsure about! Woe! Horror!
Sides, Digital Extremes is probably better remembered for things other than Darksector. You know, that little game called Unreal Tournament? Yeah, that one. It's not like they're incapable of making a good multiplayer game. Quite the opposite, actually.

First, Bioshock comes out and the critics cry about not having MP.
Next, Bioshock 2 makes the announcement of including MP, but now everbody's crying about how it'll affect the quality of SP, or at least be churned out by a 'crappy studio." Mind you, Dark Sector was supposed to have done very well outside of being very repetitive towards the end (I'm not so sure about its MP).
There's no way to make anybody happy these days...

I personally think that writing off a multiplayer game mode before you actually play it screams idiotic. I don't see the point in assuming it's going to be good or bad when it could quite easily be either. I think if you look at the facts one could draw the conclusion that perhaps 2K passed it off to a somewhat established multiplayer creator to create something true to the Bioshock setting, whilst being an a-typical shooter MP. When I say established, I mean in the fact that this dev has actually made or been involved in interesting multiplayer games- hell, the fact you know em means they're established.
Just think about it, it makes sense that they'd pass it off and although people are complaining about the idea of Digital Extremes, the bias article forgets to mention that they also had a hand in what I class a very unique and interesting multiplayer experience in the Unreal Tournament. I personally like the idea of XP and buying plasmas, tonics, weapons and basically creating a character skillset suited to your style - much like COD but perhaps they'll tweak it and make it more advanced.
I don't think anyone with half a brain should write this off without at least playing it. I mean, why bother doing that? You waste nothing by trying and if you love gaming, the LEAST you could do is be somewhat optimistic.

I welcome MP in Bioshock. I don't usually replay SP modes and I did feel short-changed for paying $60 for a relatively short game that did not have the kind of solid gameplay that would entice me to play through again.
Also, between party chats, private games, and the option of UNPLUGGING YOUR MIC, the 'too many Halo brats on-line' argument doesn't work anymore. Get some friends or ignore MP altogether. Giving others the OPTION to play MP makes sense for fans and for the sake of revenue. More sales from the competitive audience and longer revenue streams from DLC only makes sense.

Uh, so you're saying that developing an unneeded MP section will not take time away from doing the SP? And GAMEPLAY is not an XP system and shit. I'm saying the way the controller is used to do basic aiming in Bioshock is NOT GOOD for any kind of competitive setting. I guess you'll have to wait to see the final product to see what I mean.

It wont take away from the single player experience if you bothered to realize it was outsourced to a company that has done Unreal Multilayer titles previously, they have experience with the unreal engine and multilayer elements, This is the precise reason 2K did this, So that the Single player experience isn't ruined, they can focus on the single player experience and the other the multilayer experience, its not hard to make them slightly separate installs that use some of the same resources either (lets remember how COD works shall we?) The fact remains that you dont know if this will take away from SP without first playing the game.
Single player is being developed by 2k like Bioshock 1, Multiplayer is a separate entity and wont take away from the valuable development time

While it is true that it's being outsourced, the whole of the MP can't be completely done by another company. I'm sure 2K will regularly have to check back with them, especially with a multiplayer that's going for such a specific feel as this one (prequel fitting into canon). 2K will still have to spend more time than I'd feel comfortable with on this MP section- time that they could be using trying to fill the conspicuously Levine-shaped hole in their dev team.

Well, quality Control will look at it for sure but not the overall developers..... they have people designated to do that and patches can fix any of the major bugs on the pc..... I doubt they will put out something that is complete rubbish anyways, keep in mind the company we are talking about, the MP can be completely done and then integrated, its varied and non of us will know until it comes out, But i believe they dont want to sacrifice the SP quality...

I was really hoping the multiplayer would be like GTA 4 where you can just run around the single player free roam map with your friends making shananigans.
