Ahh, the world of social networking services, where everyone from Joystiq to Charles Martinet (the voice of Mario and many other Nintendo characters) can coyly hint at things of interest to the world. Why just yesterday morning, Martinet dropped hints at an "Awesome new Mario game." Normally such a statement would provide us little in the way of excitement, except it came paired with "And it's not NSMB [New Super Mario Bros.] Wii, and it's not Galaxy 2," as well as assuring us "it's going to be crazy fun!"
Considering the recent release of Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story and the two he mentioned in his Tweet, we're fairly sure Mr. "It's a me, Mario!" is dropping his dulcet tones into an unannounced "new Mario game." We've shot Nintendo a note for some clarification and will update this post as soon as we know more.
Update: Unfortunately, The Big N hasn't offered us much in the way of information, saying, "We're always working on new games and experiences, but we have nothing to announce at this time."

Nothing is forever. Why would you WANT Mario to die, though?

This'd explain the long drought of Nintendo based games for the past year + if they already have 2 Mario games well under development, and this potential 3rd, as well as talk of a Zelda game far into the process of development.
One last flurry of Nintendo games for the next 18 months, then 12 months of hyping a new console? It'd make sense.

If there were another mario game coming, it's unlikely to be coming from EAD. We're well aware of what 3 groups are working on (3, 4, and Tokyo), and the first two groups are fresh off of older projects (EAD1 with Wii Fit Plus, EAD2 with Sports Resort)

Many of the Mario games usually get a 8.0 or above. So, any Mario game is usually a good Mario, with the exception of Mario Party which has gotten more redundant by the game. It's still a good game to play every once in a while but not one of the games I'll constantly buy.
Anyway, before I get off topic I do like most of the Mario games and the recent ones have become better, Super Mario Galaxy and Mario Kart had pretty good online compared to the other games overall. So whatever it is I'll be happy to purchase it.
Who know it may even be Mario 128

Wasn't Mario Galaxy already based on (among other things) the 'Mario 128' prototype?
If it's coming soonish (like next year), I really don't see how it could be another 'main series' Mario platformer, since they already have Galaxy 2 next year. I'd guess it's not Paper Mario either, but probably some new variation on the franchise. (Retro-developed Mario FPS! Yeah, probably not.) Who knows, though.

Is it going to suck as hard as Galaxy and Sunshine? Oh! I just can't wait to see how they crap up the series even further and all the fans touch themselves in anticipation of the game!

YES, PLEASE. I hadn't even thought of that, but it would be AWESOME. Short of that, Super Mario RPG 2 developed by Square Enix (or Mistwalker??) wpuld also be fantastic. But honestly, I have a feeling that it's going to be something entirely out of left field. Judging by IGN's comments (and by Nintendo's history), I predict that it is something fans will initially dismiss as weird and retarded due to it being different, but then love it after they actually play it.

As much as I've enjoyed the Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi titles, how about we finally see a proper sequel to the original SNES Super Mario RPG?

Do you guys think that MAYBE they are making a whole NEW type of game? Something that we could never predict? Imaging the possibilities. Lets stop thinking of what they HAVE made and start thinking about what Nintendo COULD make.
Oh the possibilities! The very notion leaves me without any ideas!

How does he know about a game in development? Don't they just call him in for a day at the end?

Mario and the Black Knight,
no wait,
Super Sweet Mario!
Bowser's got his hands on the "Sucrose Star" and is turning all of Mushroom Kingdom into a super sticky, super sweet but oh so tasty Candy Domain. Mario'll be so busy trying to defeat all the corrupted confectionary that he won't have time to notice that Princess Peach has been kidnapped once again!

THIS is apart of the reason Nintendo, along with a good chunk of Japanese game devs, are hurting. They LOVE to stay STUCK in the past. Time to get with the times and move forward. All they seem to do is rehash franchises like crazy and then have these little gaming conferences where they wonder why the East is not fairing so well in the current day gaming market. Japanese devs just DON'T seem to get it, even when it's been pointed out to them. Terrible. Mario must die (sounds like a movie, eh?).
