Rumor: Epic to announce Unreal Engine 3 for consumers

Our mole tells us that the toolset will ship with example objects, like weapons and maps, and will show users how to build their own custom assets. Odds are, the kit being a product for consumers (read: nonprofessionals), that the cost won't be all that high. Of course, knowing who's going to get their hands on this (again, read: nonprofessionals), we're totally frightened by the inevitable flood of Delta Squad fanfics that will unfold on YouTube.

Scratch one grub.

This is pretty neat, seeing as the real Unreal Engine 3 costs ~US$500k and is subject to an NDA.

Now even YOU can make your own levels filled with shipping containers covered in vaseline... God dammit.
joeybeast @ Oct 23rd 2009 12:09PM
Don't you want your own meat cube?

Oh good. Now we can see a ton of Indie games and iPhone apps with texture-pops galore!
Seriously, I doubt they'd release it for free.

So we can see many more mods now for Mirrors Edge, Arkham Asylum, and other UE3 games?
Surprised Epic would be generous to the PC gamers it hates so much.
We'll have to wait for the next console generation to see the next engine, even though today's computers could probably run it. Tapping my feet here.....

I doubt a separate build of the engine will let you mod a specific game. It'd be easier to buy the game and use the version of the editor that comes with it.

I own UT3 & while it can be fun, most of the stock maps are so full of browns & beiges that it's like a giant alien vomited all over the maps.
I mainly bought UT3 because it was cheap & I want(ed) to learn to use the toolset for making maps & mods. It is interesting also how more people still play UT2K4.
Hmmm? @ Oct 23rd 2009 12:31PM
I'm a little dense. What specifically does this allow consumers to do? Can you actually use it to make your own original games, or is it just for designing mods and objects for existing games?
zenaxe @ Oct 23rd 2009 12:40PM
It's the toolset used by developers to create games based on their 3D graphics engine.
I'd guess, this means Epic considers it obsolete for professional licensing going forward, which hopefully means they are ahead of schedule on UE4. ;)

Come on Joystiq - Gears of War for PC ships with a level editor already... no need to wait for this to make horrible Delta Squad fan fiction!
This is pretty neat though, it'll definitely be great to see what the indie community can do with it.
WiredKnight: Keeper of Threads @ Oct 23rd 2009 1:45PM
I've been using the version that came with UT3 for a while now, I would love to get my hands on the new tools and features, not least of which that deformable water!
CJLopez @ Oct 23rd 2009 1:52PM
might give it a check. I was willing to create my own editor for a game we have in mind for quite some time already. We were waiting for the powerfull map editor SC2 will be comming with (given that its so powerfull it can create full custom games) but with this, i'll give it a try.
tom @ Oct 23rd 2009 5:09PM
I would guess it will be a product to compete with the likes of engines like Unity 3D and Torque (google 'em). The UE3 toolkit is very robust and could be a very competent contender to those engines. Count me in!
CH3BURASHKA @ Oct 23rd 2009 5:18PM
I heard rumors of Gears 3 or UT4, but DAMN this is better than both of those!
