Nintendo: 80 percent of female console gamers prefer Wii
[Source: Kotaku]
Nintendo's resident name jotter-downer and kiester-kicker recently divulged to BMO Capital Markets attendees that the Wii is outperforming its rivals when it comes to female gamers. According to its estimates (via Kotaku), 80 percent of the female console gaming crowd prefers Wii over the alternatives. With an estimated 11.7 million female console gamers in the Americas -- it's important to note this data of Nintendo's doesn't take into account DS owners or PC users -- the figure comes out to roughly nine million ladies waggling their way into the fun zone.

This just in: Frat boys prefer the Xbox 360!
Vazquez @ Nov 26th 2009 3:04AM
Lame.
Rhamsey @ Nov 26th 2009 12:53PM
And bros prefer Natty Ice and some Gamecube.
Dreaded Fear @ Nov 26th 2009 1:27PM
360? They also love the PS3.
VaultBoy @ Nov 26th 2009 6:58PM
Its ok. 80% of female gamers are allowed to be wrong. Despite its strong sales, I hold fast to my opinion that Wii is the inferior console full of shovel worthy waggle-ware. Down-vote me as you see fit.
Morisato @ Nov 26th 2009 3:11AM
I could have told you that. 80% of the women I invite over always prefer to play with my wii.
den-69 @ Nov 26th 2009 3:14AM
I don't want to know what the other 20% are playing with...
Husher @ Nov 26th 2009 3:31AM
@den-69
Each other.
Husher @ Nov 26th 2009 3:32AM
or ... idk a cup?
tjfadness @ Nov 26th 2009 3:35AM
Well, 80% means there would be exactly 2 left over so, yes... a cup.
Morisato @ Nov 26th 2009 3:38AM
With the other 20% we pretend it's Soviet Russia
Husher @ Nov 26th 2009 3:41AM
so a guy and a jar?
Ridgecity @ Nov 26th 2009 3:53AM
the ones that don't play with your wii are not women.
Sly @ Nov 26th 2009 4:07AM
the ones that do probably aren't either...
Prof. Von Manifest (aka the caterpillar in your buttermilk) [PSN: Manifest37] @ Nov 26th 2009 3:11AM
It would seem 80% of females are predictable.
Probably off topic but I'm annoyed by female gamers that feel the need to advertise their sex... if they're really females.
CoD example: their name could be something like ladybugg666, but they feel the need to make their clan name [LaDy] or [G!rL].
GG @ Nov 26th 2009 3:28AM
Why are you annoyed by them? That default amount of attention that's immediately bestowed upon a female gamer is hardly her fault. She shouldn't have to downplay her gender to make you more comfortable or earn a basic amount of respect.
Cody @ Nov 26th 2009 3:29AM
Is it just coincidence that the gamertag you picked out ends in 666 or is it more proof that girls are evil? (Just kidding....I'm gonna go hide now...)
Prof. Von Manifest (aka the caterpillar in your buttermilk) [PSN: Manifest37] @ Nov 26th 2009 3:34AM
lol, no just that 666 is a common suffix.
Annoyed is probably too strong a word but come on, do female gamers really need so much attention?
Feels like their saying: "Look at me, I'm a girl & I play videogames!! Message me & shower me with affection"
Faceman @ Nov 26th 2009 4:53AM
It would take 500 lifetimes to fully understand women, but one basic thing everyone should know is that YES they love attention and will do whatever they can for some.
guttertalk @ Nov 26th 2009 9:00AM
@faceman:
Unlike all the males routinely posting on public forums.
Robot Overlord @ Nov 26th 2009 10:43AM
i think manifest is talking about these type of girls

den-69 @ Nov 26th 2009 11:00AM
Lol that sums them up perfectly.
Prof. Von Manifest (aka the caterpillar in your buttermilk) [PSN: Manifest37] @ Nov 26th 2009 12:12PM
YES!! This is why you are our Overlord, Robot Overlord.
TheWhiteWolf @ Nov 26th 2009 3:12PM
I must be the only one that prefers to be treated as one of the guys rather than all that pointless attention. That or kill you off in pvp. Not everyone uses some stupid girly trash name. Those types of girls get on my nerves/
Monica Dickey @ Nov 26th 2009 4:15PM
ladybug666 huh? You make me wish I could change my gamertag hahaha
Those names are kind of dorky but I'm sure there's an equal amount of dudes with dude names involving death, pain, boy or man in their name and I'm not going to bother getting worked up about it. From what I've seen out there I think half the people who sign up on XBL don't even realize they're choosing their permanent name and just enter their email ID or something.
Setai @ Nov 27th 2009 3:01AM
I'm all for girls who can game but I also find it sad that a lot of the serious female gamers have to say that they own a PS3/360 and play Halo 3, Modern Warfare, or any other popular FPS just to validate that they are indeed a "serious" gamer, while in the meantime they try to distance themselves from the Wii, ignoring the really good quality titles that it does have.
I agree that 70-85% of what comes out on Wii is shovelware but to ignore or dismiss games like Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime Trilogy, LoZ: Twilight Princess, Lost Winds, and Muramasa is a crime. If they all really do prefer FPSs, fighting games, and racing games then more power to them. Not saying those genres are bad at all (Uncharted 2 is amazing and Forza 3 is one of the best racing games in years), its just that I respect the girls (and guys) who are into the games that deserve recognition because they emphasize great gameplay instead of just being another sequel with amazing graphics and great online multi-player.
I'm not just talking about the quality Wii titles but also great games on PS3 or 360 like Braid, Flower, Fat Princess, and Shadow Complex. Again, not saying every serious girl gamer likes only Halo or COD but I for one am more impressed if a girl says she likes critically-acclaimed games that not everyone knows about like Muramasa or Shadow Complex than something like Modern Warefare.
Anti-Villian @ Nov 27th 2009 3:37AM
@Setai
I don't mean to be sexist but when I hear a girl say they like a game such as Halo or Call of Duty I just think she must have had an (ex)boyfriend who would play it or knows a guy who plays these games and maybe had a go once or twice.
for example my sister likes Halo, I don't think she's played it long enough to ever finish a level, she's had a go a few times and that's it, never played it alone or seriously, doesn't stop her bragging though.
on the other hand my friend has a Wii and a DS, she likes games like Castlevania, Scribblenauts, Advance wars, Madworld, mariokart etc. I think she's pretty into gaming, but no one would know it.
Katana Master @ Nov 26th 2009 3:18AM
I could have told you this.
kal326 @ Nov 30th 2009 2:35PM
Yeah, but did you have a pie chart handy? More people will believe you if you have a chart.
Katana Master @ Nov 30th 2009 2:42PM
True, but my sister, mother and girl friends (friends that are girls :/) could probably tell you the same thing :P
Sly @ Nov 26th 2009 3:22AM
i'm surprised that the 360 and PS3 are so close. i was thinking the 360 would be much higher compared to the PS3.
Platy @ Nov 26th 2009 3:45AM
It was ... but then they start to advertise that the ps3 does everything.
EVERYTHING.
psn-kill_strike @ Nov 26th 2009 3:53AM
just wait till the playstation motion controller comes out and the ps3 might overtake the 360 with the ladies
*that's right i went there*
Jesus (PSN: Luttdawg) @ Nov 26th 2009 4:45AM
Um...So when Natal is released, won't that have the exact same effect for the 360?
den-69 @ Nov 26th 2009 6:22AM
How can they pleasure themselves with natal?
Wait, I got one... A magic mirror application.
Kanjou @ Nov 26th 2009 7:17AM
The 360 was far and away outperforming the other HD console until female gamers caught wind of a massage application soon to be released.on the PS3.
den-69 @ Nov 26th 2009 11:04AM
Oh god I desperately need that application lol
I don't think I can take another blatant hint right before I go to sleep EVERY NIGHT.
WHEN DO I EVER ASK FOR MASSAGES BITCH?
N1ghtbl4z3 @ Nov 26th 2009 3:27AM
thats not really surprising...
holyice7 @ Nov 26th 2009 3:31AM
Nintendo's research has also shown that fire is 99.8% likely to be hot.

HighFiveJesus @ Nov 26th 2009 12:52PM

KingOfHearts @ Nov 26th 2009 3:31AM
With all the shovelware on the Wii, 97% of miners prefer that, too..
... Okay, that sucked.
Um...
Miners like to play hard core games..?
.... Um...
Pudding?
Roto13 @ Nov 26th 2009 4:08AM
*pelts you with tomatoes*
AlwaysOn @ Nov 26th 2009 3:32AM
I do wonder how they reached that number? If I compare to my girl friends you can divide them into two groups. One group of serious console gamers that all prefer Xbox 360 or PS3 or sometimes have both. One group that is only casual gamers that prefer to play Nintendo Wii on partys and stuff like that. I might be wrong of course but I really do think that this is the case for most female gamers in the world.
Platy @ Nov 26th 2009 3:44AM
I think is basicaly the same reason most wii male players .... nintendo nostalgial, underground games like okami and muramasa, virtual console and lack of space marines filled with more testosterone than a baseball player on futurama =P
guttertalk @ Nov 26th 2009 10:05AM
I'm a multi console owner. I also have never owned a Nintendo platform before, so nostalgia has nothing do with playing the Wii. I play the Wii as equally as my 360 or PC, if not more sometimes. The reason is that I have a far more varied gaming experience on the Wii. Yes, the 360 has some great, deep games. But the games look and often feel the same or similar enough.
I love playing Muramasa, A Boy and His Blob, and NSMBW. I also enjoyed the well-designed motion controls, such as Lost Winds. I have enjoyed the change-up of controls, such as Madden 08.
mocax @ Nov 26th 2009 3:37AM
it's cool to be in the minority.... :D
a grrl with a PS3! playing MW2! that's cool. :D
WiredKnight: Keeper of Threads @ Nov 26th 2009 6:04AM
But spelling "girl" g-r-r-l is not.
MrSpaceCowboy @ Nov 26th 2009 3:39AM
So does this mean if I buy a Wii I can pull chicks?
I have the other 2 consoles, and it hasn't worked so far. :(
