We think the redesigned PS3 is small enough. However, Sony's Japanese designers, in their continuing desire to shrink things, noted that the PS3 Slim "could have been made even smaller."
Sony's executive VP of technology Masayuki Chatani spoke with Japanese newspaper Nikkei about the challenges of designing a slimmer PS3. The goal was not only to cut costs, but to expand its attractiveness to "an even wider range of users." Considering the Japanese penchant for small electronics, the original PS3's girth was certainly a limiting factor.
However, certain sacrifices would have been necessary for Sony to pursue an even smaller box. One option was to place "the power supply on the outside," much like Microsoft's Xbox 360 power brick. Taking yet another page from Microsoft, an even more drastic option considered was to remove the hard drive altogether. The alternatives -- Flash memory or virtual network storage -- proved to be too expensive, and too unreliable. Ultimately, the Sony team chose function over form. "One of the best features of the PS3 is that people can download games to the internal local storage unit and play comfortably." That reminds us -- we need a bigger couch.

didn't the PS2 slim have an external brick? the n on top of that Ben Heck PS3 laptop wasn't THAT big, they could have made it maybe half the thickness it is now and at the same time not had to remove the HDD.....

I think the first PS2 slim had a power brick but then the 3rd redesign was even smaller but had an internal one. Anyway I'm glad Sony kept it internal, because they actually have engineers that can design good hardware unlike a certain other company....

Man, that reminds me of the 'ol N64 power brick that plugged into the back of the console. Good times, good times.

Flash Memory is approaching the point where it could easily replace hard-drives as small as the ones that the PS3 and 360 use (maybe not the 120, but still), so that alternative isn't that far off.

Too bad Sony didn't op to bring back memory cards. It's so much nicer saving my games to an external device all the time instead of having to manually copy the saves from the hard drive everytime I want to take a game to a friend's house.
Then again, I don't do that much. Nothing sucks more than waiting 15 minutes for an install to finish so my friends and I can play a game...

Wait, you'd rather have small, proprietary, overpriced memory cards than the ability to transfer your saves to a usb drive of any sort whenever you want? Seems kind of backwards to me.
It would be nice to be able to choose where your saves go automatically, so that if you do move a flash drive with saves between PS3's you don't have to bother copying things over each time.

Hey, that'd be even better! I'm just saying that I would be willing to buy a proprietary memory card if it provides the features I want.

If he's still importing chips, he may want to diversify.

So sad that you people find the smallest thing's to bitch or complain about. you folks must do alot of bitchin everytime the wind blows, oh no it blew west instead of east or it should have blown north instead of south .perfect does not exsit ,nothing will ever be to one's liking. what one person thinks of perfect , maynot be perfect to some else .

Don't care. Size is the least important thing about as console. The original PS3 isn't even that huge. I mean, it's noticeably bigger than my 360, but who cares? I'm just glad they got the price down.

i kinda did a hibernation from gaming after GTA San Andreas on PS2, thinking I grew out of gaming only to awaken in 2007 when i got a PS3...since then I haven't really been interested in the XBOX 360, much less its specs

"just because your equipment is thrown on a shelf with no regard for wire management"
it sounds to me like your the one with the problem managing your wires/entertainment system, it should not be too difficult to figure out how to set up everything without causing over heating or a tangled mess. for instance if you dont want to put the power supply on top of the wires (where you apparently have a huge amount of heat) you might want to set it on the side of your entertainment system.or pull the entertainment system out 2-3 extra inches to allow better airflow.
to cut down on heat, if i may suggest, you could always turn off any electronics when not in use. for instance, if you are using your PS3, turn off your xbox360, Cable receiver, etc. and if you arnt using surround sound while you play, be sure you turn off your AV receiver as well, as those can create a great deal of heat.
i really hope this helps with your heating problems. i hope you can now enjoy a reasonable level of entertainment without the constant worry over all the heat your xbox power supply is creating.

I am actually very very happy that it is on the inside. The extra externals laying around just cause more of a mess of wires but also adds to the stuff you need to lug around. My fat Ps2 got a lot of lugging around from my room to the living room in college since it was our DVD player for a good year.

I find power bricks to be annoying for things you need to move around, but I'd probably never have noticed it for something I keep in one place like my PS3.

i wish the PS3 was at least half the size of the original but it's good they kept the internal memory and power supply.
