this is the issue:

The firmware seems to have caused a corruption in the data, The clock is one outward sign of the corruption. The other corrupted data includes the trophy data and the permissions used to verify that a downloaded game has been purchased.

I can understand having to connect to the PSN to repair the corrupted data. that makes sense. It also makes sense to refuse full game permission for unverified PSN full downloads.

It does not make sense to refuse to allow someone to play a game because the system cannot repair corrupted trophy data. The software should include a work around that simply states that trophies cannot be earned until the data is repaired and allows you to continue to play the game.

I was mistaken in my previous assumption that I was not allowed to play the game offline because I had previously had the console connected to the internet and earned trophies. But there is still the above issue which Sony should address.

Corruption did not cause the clock issue. The clock issue caused the clock issue. According to the PS blog, they believe that it is a bug with the clock functionality in the system.

Anybody have a guide showing the best way to get to the RCT battery? My launch system couldn't be any older, so I'm not worried about warranty.

Also, anyone think this problem fixes itself in 6 hours when GMT rolls over midnight again? Or would it be 18 hours when the last possible time zone rolls off Feb 29th?

I'm leaning more toward the sort of 'overflow' issue that is supposed to affect UNIX systems in 2038. It might not be the SAME issue, but considering that my clock wasn't reset to 0:00 12/31/1999, but 17:26... that's a somewhat random time to be selected.

The numbers don't make much sense, though. The *NIX 2038 problem is supposed to happen when the number of seconds since 1/1/1970 gets to be too big to handle in a 32-bit address.

Using a 'base date' of 1/1/2000, (taking the earliest date able to be manually set) and the 'termination' date of 3/1/2010 (Reports say this started when the clock ticked over to March 1st GMT), we get:

3711 days
89064 hours - 10101101111101000
5342400 minutes - 10100011000101001100000
320544000 seconds - 10011000111000110111010000000

Doesn't really fit. ^^;

The time of 17:26 on 12/31/2010 is 394 minutes (110001010) or 23640 seconds (101110001011000) prior to 0:00 1/1/2000. Again... Doesn't really seem like a 'logical' number to reset to.

It doesn't make any more sense in Hex, either.

I don't envy Sony's task right now. ^^;

Has anyone else noticed that Sony's statement says the clock may have reset To Jan 1 2000?

Yet my PS3, and most of the others documented on various forums early on, actually reset to December 31, 1999?

Is this true? Insider leaked news from sony, PSN has been hacked causing worldwide problems. PSN users are unable to login to their accounts. The hacker responsible goes by the name of KILLA_KIWI with many PSN users reporting a chain mail that was sent around about KILLA_KIWI warning of his hacking hobbies on the PS3! Embarassed sony is now working around the clock trying to work out how PSN was hacked and just what has gone wrong. Just got this in a email from a ps3 news site. Has anyone else heard of this, is it true?
