I brought my kinect yesterday and as a dark skined person I can honestly tell you that it has nothing to do with your skin tone it was able to read me perfectly.....

the only time it wasnt able to read me was when I tried to play kinect naked in the dark.

Playing Kinect naked provides for some pretty awesome action shot uploads.

Too bad Kinect only allows two players. It would be a joyous ride indeed with 3 or 4.

Not that us lonely nerds are going to see much local multiplayer action anyway. Oh well, single player is fun too!

All cameras should now come with a spot light installed so low light levels won't be an issue.

Well this sucks. First my room isn't big enough, now it's not brightly lit enough.

What's next? My pet snake will start freaking out because of the infrared scattering? Oh wait...

Actually the problem would be if your room was TOO brightly lit, not poorly lit.

it didn't say that, it said it has problems picking up anyone in low light, and adequate light is good for everyone.

It has a hard time recognizing me (african american) and I have decent lighting in my house. I'm going to have to have my white roommates test it out to see if it recognizes them or not.

It's like people think that the programmers intentionally designed Kinect to not work with ethnicities. It would have been more of a technical shortcoming than racism.

@DBuckEye It's weird that so many people seem to think the only kind of racial bias that can possibly exist is deliberate antipathy, and that careless indifference doesn't matter.

It's the same thing you get with games that use color cues even though a significant portion of the gaming audience is red/green colorblind. They're not actively trying to work against the colorblind, but the developers' assumptions are self-centered and result in a differential effect.

Black techs are pretty rare, so it's not really a surprise when a bunch of lighter skinned developers test things on themselves and it never occurs to them that people could be different. (This is the same thing that leads to androcentric development, as well. The developers are mostly dudes.)

If you're new to Kinect, you might notice that it tries to recognize you right away, even if you've never used Kinect ID to identify yourself, and tie your face to your gamertag. I was getting this message at first and didn't understand that I had to use Kinect ID first so it would recognize me later.

Also, if you use the Kinect ID tool with certain lighting, Kinect may have trouble ID-ing you if the lighting changes. In this case, you'll want to use Kinect ID in the different lighting conditions you expect to use Kinect in.

@BizarroPete Just for clarification, I meant that you'd have to use the Kinect ID tool at least once in each lighting condition (if theres a noticible difference) you plan on playing in.

Gameplay on Kinect requires both IR and regular light. They are two components. The IR is used for the depth sensing the other functionality like face recognition is done by the regular RGB webcam and definitely requires ambient light.
