Darksiders 2 will star new character, take place alongside events of first game
61
During his keynote speech at the IGDA Leadership Forum, THQ wunderkind Danny Bilson revealed some info on Darksiders 2, the sequel to Joe Mad's inspired take on a post-apocalyptic Earth. Instead of taking up the mantle of War again, the sequel will offer a new playable character -- one of the other three horsemen of the apocalypse, perhaps?
"When we do the Darksiders sequel, it'll be a different character and take place simultaneously to the other story," Bilson said. "There's only one apocalypse -- I couldn't very well have four different apocalypses, one for each rider. It has some new mechanics and some very robust features that differentiate it a lot and grow it from the first game because you have to build on the first one, you can't repeat it. I think that's very important in franchise-building."
It tied into the rest of the keynote, which revolved around Bilson and THQ's take on sequels and how to approach them when trying to create franchises. Look for our full write-up of Bilson's candid keynote speech soon.

Lame.
I platinumed DS and loved it, although it did have its issues. I was really hoping to see what would come after the ending of the first game (won't spoil anything, even though I think its well past the limit of "I don't care you should have played it by now"), but I suppose you could be playing a demon or an angel...which it would have to be, right? There are no more humans.
Which brings up a good question that I always had...why was the power working in a lot of areas, lol.

@sammo21 The plan had always been from the very beginning to give each one of the Horsemen their own game in the series, to tell the story from their perspective.
The original title for the game was, "Darksiders: Wrath of War", not just merely Darksiders. The emphasis of the original title, being that you would know this game was War's story, and each of the Horsemen in turn, Famine, Pestilence and Death, would get their own stories to be told.
Think of it like Shining Force 3 from the SEGA Saturn. For those of you did not own a Saturn and did not know, Shining Force 3 was an RPG told in three parts; scenarios 1, 2, and 3. Each scenario being a full 30 to 50 hour RPG, each released months apart. Each scenario literally features a different hero from either side of the conflict, and tells the story of the same war from three differing perspectives. Ultimately in the end, the three heroes unite to reveal to the world, and defeat, the true villain who orchestrated the war that would have led to total destruction, and save the day. As role-playing games go, Shining Force 3 is one of the all-time best, and definitely one of the most ambitious games ever developed.
According to early interviews concerning the Darksiders series, Darksiders was originally supposed to follow a similar path - four games, one dedicated to each of the four horsemen as the central protagonist, telling the same tale from differing perspectives, with a fifth game uniting the horsemen to resolve the whole story.
Admittedly, for a small publisher like THQ, that is a rather ambitious project to undertake, but then that is one of the things I love the most about the new THQ - they are not afraid to take chances that other, larger publishers would immediately tuck their tails and run and hide from.
For the final year of development, and even for months after Darksiders was released, it appeared as if THQ had dropped the ambitious nature of their original plans, to follow a more mundane and generic approach to completing the Darksiders story. But after today's announcements, that the original plan is back on, that is probably the best gaming news that I have heard in months. Darksiders was an awesome game, that left the story wide open for more to come after, and now knowing that THQ has every intent on completing that story based on their original plans of a five game story arc that would allow each horseman to have his day, I could not be more excited.

yea like a game ending glitch within sprinting distance of the end of the game. i'm still bitter about that and banished the game to the shelf because of it since i'm not playing it all the way through again for a couple hours i didn't see.

Interesting idea. It would be neat to see how another horseman, Death for instance, would play differently then War.

@Ezio Auditore da Firenze you never actually got to see the other horsemen :(. That would've been cool, even they were only shown in a cutscene or something.

They never depicted them in the game. But as part of the lead up to the launch, or it might have been with collectors editions or such, they released a few comic books which provide some 'back story' on the horseman.

i have to say i'm pretty stoked for this. while i didn't think the first one was the greatest thing ever made, i really enjoyed every bit of it. it had some issues, but hopefully these will get addressed in the sequel (my biggest gripe was how weightless War felt). I think it makes sense a sequel with a story running parallel to the first is the direction they want to take, but i have to admit, a continuation from the end would be more appealing. maybe this time will get to play as Death? that might make up for it a little.

I'm really liking the fact that THQ is rapidly becoming a more serious developer/publisher.
And depending on how much it is now, I really need to jump in to this Darksiders business. I've heard good and bad things about it. I'm curious...

@Shadowbender i would say the good outweighs the bad and is absolutely worth picking up, 10000%, if you can find it for a bargain price (though even the full price was worth it to me). if you like the zelda-style gameplay, you'll have a good time with this game for sure.

Though I want it to be one of the other horsemen that stars in the sequel, how could it be?
The events of the first game (namely, the ending sequence) make another horseman dong anything concurrently with War's story impossible. Unless they just retcon the whole thing, I guess.

Darkstalkers was an awesome Zelda/God of War mash up. Very fun and well worth a buy. Was actually a decent length too. Im so glad its getting a sequel as long as the same devs work on it

War was a pretty bland/generic hulking dude. The supporting cast was much more interesting.I was looking forward to playing as one of the other horseman, I hate this simultaneous story sh*t, give me a f*ckin break. Like I didn't have to back track enough in the first game. Disappointing to hear after they setup the first game's story to continue with the other horsemen.

I loved Darksiders a lot, I finished it twice and I think the ending was fantastic. I was very much excited for the sequel in hopes of it continuing the story but I guess it won't which sucks.
I am excited for the sequel nonetheless, because its more Darksiders I can play!
Anyway ... how epic was the line at the end? *DONT WORRY NO SPOILER*

Really I'm not sure why people are surprised by this in any way. I didn't even really get into the game, in fact I didn't enjoy what little I played of it in any way shape or form, but if you read anything about it during it's development you would know that it was originally supposed to be the story of all four horsemen but they decided to focus on War instead.
In fact, unless I'm horribly mistaken which I don't believe I am, Game Informer's story on Darksiders a couple years ago hinted heavily at the other horsemen being involved at some point in time.
So... that would make this a completely logical next step.

I bet some focus group said War wasn't appealling enough or something.
Plus, what do MEAN you can't have more than one apocalypse? You wipe the slate clean or do an alternate version of Earth. Stories have been doing this for YEARS!!
All these concerns will be muted if Death is the playable hero though.

Keep going!
Oh yeah!
Down here!
Oh my!
How can you play as another horseman? Up until the end of the game, the seal was still intact. Weren't the others still asleep until it was broken by Uriel in order to give War back all his powers? The council had summoned War by himself after they let the apocalypse start, because they knew the others wouldn't do their dirty work for them. Therefore, War was the only Rider awake during the events of the game.
It just seems illogical to have such an awesome ending to the first game and not continue on with it. :(

That may be, but the apocalypse happened on Earth, certainly not in the dimension were the other Riders were resting. If it takes place alongside the events of the first game Nier is right, you shouldn't be controlling another Rider. It would be a cop-out if they explained it by saying that a Rider somehow escaped without being summoned.

As long as they don't ignore the cliffhanger from the first game I'll be happy. That was a good, but ultimately unsatisfying way to end the game.
Maybe the first half of Darksiders 2 should end where the last half of Darksiders 1 did so that we will know what happens after that.
