People keep saying this but I think it will be really annoying and not even work well. All we need is one game to try it and then it will never be done again.

I kinda want head tracking, or at least a "poke your head out" feature, but then I remember all the moving and flailing around I do while playing BC2....

NO!!! It's a bad idea, and it's a waste of the developer's time. No hardcore gamer is going to play a hardcore game (like Gears of War) with motion controls. And even if they do, they'll go right back to a gamepad after five minutes of trying to shoot a gun by flailing their arms around.

Sony is trying to do the same shit with SOCOM, and it's stupid!!!

Gamers that want to mix motion controls with hardcore games just don't get it. Motion controls are not for you! They're for your little sister and your mom. These devices were designed to get people that don't know how to use a gamepad interested in video games.

Just be glad that Sony and Microsoft didn't go the way of Nintendo and completely abandon the hardcore gamer. At least their motion controllers are options and not mandates.

I actually have a Kinect, and I did not get it because I thought someday I'd be able to play Halo with it. I got it because I already had an Xbox, but didn't have any games for my non-gamer friends.

That's a poor use for the device. If you think that is what I was implying then let me be clear. I'm a fan of hybrid controller experiences. I truly think this is the way to go. Motion control should not replace standard dpad. but it can certainly enhance the experience through other inputs.

I'm surprised people are still thinking Kinect integration automatically means flailing your arms about. Use your imagination, things are going to change whether you like it or not.

Do you really think that motion controls aren't the future of gaming? Are you that dense? Look at how much the video game controller changes every ten years (well, except Sony's). Do you think you'll be playing with dual analogs only in 2015? That there will be nothing to supplement and enrich the experience? Get real, man. You should be on your knees thanking Nintendo for having the guts to break the mold and evolve gaming. And stop with the "Nintendo abandoned the core!" whiny-ass bullshit boo-hoo-ery. Cry me a river. If anything, the core abandoned Nintendo and sold out in droves to the more casual-friendly PS1. And be honest, the only reason that Kinect and Move are supplementary experiences is because Sony and Microsoft are 5 years late to the party. If they even had the slightest inclination that the Wii was going to rape them in sales by such an embarrassing margin they would have launched with Move and Kinect. Embrace the future, dude, because when the new consoles launch, dual analog is going to be the last thing on anyone's mind.

Motion-control bad? Perhaps. I haven't played SOCOM with the Move, but the "advanced" motion control scheme for Metroid Corruption gives you a pretty natural aiming method. It's still no mouse+keyboard in terms of precision, but I'd say it's no less precise than dual analogs sticks. It has you use the nunchuk as one analog stick (movement) and the wii controller pointer as the other--basically a giant aiming control stick. Even if it doesn't offer more degrees of precision with its axial measurements, it's easier to get to them. It's not a waggle action.

There's (mostly) stupid motion controls like waggling, and then there's effective motion control that you're not accustomed to. One is a waste of time, and the other potentially has a future. If you're going to pass judgement, it's important to note this distinction.

I believe that motion controls are the future. The real question is how far into it? The problem for motion controls is two fold, accuacy and purpose. The Wii has proven that because something can be done, doesn't necessarly means it should be done. Shoe-horning motion controls for the sake of itself is a step backwards. Nintendo has created a "new" frontier for gaming, but it current incarnation is too clumbsy for hardcore use. On the other end of the spectrum, the Kinect is not suited, atleast not now, for hardcore gaming. How well would Kinect work with a FPS: can it track my index finger to know if I am depressing it for shooting or am i simply moving it to a different position, how well can Kinect track my hand movements to understand when I am reloading and how slow will I have to perform these gestures? To me any potential that can be squeezed out of Kinect for the HC crowd will not be till much further down the road, past the next gen of consoles.

but then you'd have to stand up, because Kinect can't track anything while you are sitting down.

I should drive down to Epic (about 20 minutes from me) and beg them to integrate Kinect just so Gears would come in a purple box, gamers would worry about how it was integrated, and gamers would start massive flame wars over which flailing system is better (Kinect vs Move vs Wii).

Epic could release the largest troll ever by adding some minor (and even skippable) Kinect feature into Gears3. :D

i agree. much to my chagrin, motion controls are looking to be the future of gaming and we have the wild popularity of the wii to thank for that. thanks nintendo. at first i laughed at your pitiful little excuse for a console, now i laugh at it even more, though now there is desperation in my guffaw. i hate to see motion controls become the "future of gaming", and once the big three fully embrace it and make that their only controller, i think it is time for me to exit stage left.

Nintendo started the whole thing off with infrared back on the Snes, which moved onto Sony trying out the eye toy, then Wii going 100% with motion. So motion has most definitely come a long way, and it will always be around, it's just finding a way to slip into our gaming and become natural.

However, until we see a 100% effective way of it being utilised, it will always take a back seat, an experiement, but not a common habit. Heck, 3D will one day improve so much so you can literally have your game interface floating outside of the screen which you can grab, alter, change etc. These are all amazing but farscape concepts.

I think Kincet can be used effectively in games, but until anyone INCLUDING MICROSOFT themselves start betting big on them and making more games utilise it, it will just take a back seat. For example, if Halo implements amazing new ways to use Kinect in-game without a seperate minigame or some other nonsense just for Kinect, we will definitely see other FPS titles following behind like sheep. Funny enough, thats exactly what will happen if Killzone 3 and Socom prove to be more fun with Move then a controller. That and only that will change gaming and in return see more exclusivity for the different tech on both consoles.

I guarantee you that the next Xbox and the next Playstation will have both motion controls and gamepads. No one wants to play Call of Duty or Halo with motion controls. Look how unpopular shooters are on the Wii. In fact, show me one game on the Wii that hardcore gamers play.

But I think you may be throwing the baby out with the bathwater here. Just because motion controls are clumsy now doesn't mean that they will continue to be so. Once more and more devs get onboard with the idea and once the tech gets better I think we'll look back and wonder how we ever played games without them, just like we do with analog sticks and shoulder buttons. Fear not, little gamer, this too shall pass.

I think you might be going too far towards the other extreme. Just because motion controls exist, and just because hey look frakking cool in Minority Report, does not mean they're truly practical in all situations. For example, iPad keyboards < real keyboards.

Those scenes in Minority Report are designed to look cool more than anything else. If anyone noticed any huge efficiency gains in those scenes, please let me know. From what I saw them do, it seemed like they could have saved a lot of time by using something like DropBox or GoogleDocs.

See, the things is, if PS3 and 360 were built from the ground up to accomodate motion at every turn, as opposed to a last minute incentive, I think it would be a very different story. Not only would the tracker be on the console to avoid silly cameras and such but every flaw would be accounted for, fps' would be tested, rpgs would be tested, sports games would be tested, all before the console even releases, to ensure that they all play 100% correctly with the technology.

Imagine a console that has a technology that sees everything in the room, everything in one big 3D digital image, sending out sonar like signals every milisecond, so if you were hiding behind a couch it would pick you up, if you had 10 people in the room, it would pick you all up seperately, heat sensors. I dunno, its a dream, it doesnt have to be realistic! Anyway, imagine what would be possible, now take that very same idea, and implement 3D technology without glasses of the new age.

And there you have it folks, the very first step towards that PS9 advert :D

Being able to use real chainsaw action Lancer while playing would be pretty badass, but I think we have enough plastic peripherals...

You realize it's not because it isn't possible per say, but because the developer is just smart, right? They don't want to put it in because it would hamper the game more than help it.

If they used it in 4, it wouldn't make sense, now would it?
