Avid Halo Wars players, whose attention hasn't been swayed by 2010's exhaustive list of strategy blockbusters, were greeted with some unwelcome news this past weekend: The game's stat tracking home, as well as its official forums, will be shut down on December 15. The loyal community is being persuaded to move its conversation over to the Halo Waypoint forums. On the same day as the closure, an update will launch for Halo Wars, forever severing it from the soon-to-be-discontinued website.
The update will also remedy a few Theater mode issues that were keeping players from viewing cutscenes, but, according to 343's content producer, "it won't include many of the fixes that we all wanted it to include." As you can imagine, the responses on said post are well-measured, even-headed and entirely polite. There's just this air of understanding permeating the entire discussion that's ... well, it's really inspiring.

As someone who owns Halo Wars, but has not yet played it, I feel sorry for the community that spent so much time upping their stats.
I personally think Microsoft should offer the most active players the new Reach map pack for free, or some other sort of "severance".

I really liked the game when I first played it. However, the achievement that requires you to rank up to FRIGGIN' GENERAL kinda killed it for me. There's no way I'll ever get that.

Oh man, I don't want to click the link, I know what's behind it, but I want to BELIEVE that it isn't

I am quite an active halo wars player. It is one of the only games that I consistently play on xbox. Reach didn't woo me, only thing I play besides halo wars is black ops and mass effect, as of now. As long as they are not disbanding online like how EA did with LOTR Conquest which luckily only two of us bought before we saw we couldn't play with each other even in a private game.
I didn't know they had stats or an active forum going but I know during the weekend there is a consistent 9-10,000 online in halo wars, so I wouldn't be surprised by a decent sized forum. Too bad for those stat goers first time I know of it and last time I'll probably hear about it.
final note I want halo wars 2 any idea if that is 343s project. Or are they going to take the money making side and make a halo (insert here). Because I know there are quite a few people from ensemble in 343.

I like Halo Wars, I really do, but the lack of RTS depth kinda killed it for me. I guess I was just expecting more unit/vehicle types and more Starcraft or C&C like base building.
It was still fun though.

Side note:
I posted this comment because I'd love to see a Halo Wars 2 if they gave it more depth and deeper RTS elements. I thought the menu worked perfectly for consoles though.

@sonicspike41 Yeah definitely the best RTS I have played on console. I think mainly because the controls flowed right. I know what you mean by the depth though it was very simplified(mainly the economy system where you hardly even had to pay attention and the units didn't have very much variety to make for a surprising battle). But I believed there was very good balance in units in the game and the maps were extremely good. I started playing age of empires 2 back almost 10 years ago and thought it was a great game and just got the .10 cent age of empires 3.
I think considering they did the best job on porting an RTS to the console. Because I don't have to worry about this and that or sit in a certain position as on the computer and drop a couple thousand like I hear to run some of these games. Although I may not be able to use an xbox for work, internet, and have to pay money for service and buy the console. It is worth the ease and convenience that I get with console gaming and hope there will be more RTS games on the console beside C&C. Because those have gone down the tube *in my opinion* since they put it on the console.

MS never did right by this game... closing Ensemble Studios before the release and now this. It got generally good ratings and sold over a million copies. Not sure why MS has been so dismissive of the game from the start.

Wow - That sucks - I played occaisionally & enjoyed the stat tracking on the site (Which I HIGHLY doubt will be brought over)
On a selfish note: I wish the DLC would get reduced :p

This is why console online multiplayer with company-supported only servers are inferior to pc multiplayer with dedicated servers.
Company decides to no longer support online multiplayer? Everyone who bought a copy is screwed.
Pc developer decides to no longer update a game? No problem, the customers can still run their own servers.

And I am very much aware the game itself isn't shutting down, but with this, it can't be far behind.

Hey, look, it's the kid who couldn't stand being proven wrong once, so he's going to reply to every comment I make, and say "whining?"
Seriously, shut up. No one cares that you got proved wrong once. I wouldn't have even said anything more to you about it, but you seem to follow my comments, making the same comment.
You are acting like a damn kid. "Waah, I got told I was wrong on something, and when I challenged him, he still beat me." Obviously you care more about it than I do seeing as you are following me. Shut up.

LOL, right. I'm following you. I can't just be reading joystiq and the comments and since you reply to 100% of the posts you're in ever post I see? It's not my fault you're whining a lot. Just calls it like I sees it.
I'm 26 by the way. Hardly a kid. And not really sure what you're talking about being right with.

It's easy to say it's the best RTS on the Xbox 360 as it was developed around the console controller as opposed to being ported [badly] from PC. That said, the Halo universe added depth and a great story.
This, for me, is not just a great RTS - it's a great Halo game for Halo fans. You may be able to enjoy the series without this but you'll feel much more fulfilled after playing it.
It's a shame Ensemble is no more but, then again, what a game to go out on*. I hope 343's first Halo game is the sequel and I hope it follows it admirably.
(*I may be over selling. If you're a FPS freak, it may not be your cup of tea)
Also, in my opinion, some of the most gorgeous CGI cut scenes in any game. Amazingly detailed, animated and directed.

The story was very well done in this game. With that said I think LOTR:Battle for Middle Earth II was much better than this game. I absolutely love Halo but after a few online games I grew tired of it. Mostly because there weren't enough variables. Only two races combined with the fact that you can't free build wherever you want made it feel watered down.

I'd like to add that I really like that game. It's an RTS for an idiot like me and it's fan-frickin-tastic! I really hope they make a sequel, because the game could use some more units and deeper tech trees.
Either way, it's a sad, sad day...

I'm sure that's true to a degree, but keep in mind you're talking about a handful of people for most of these old games. I mean, 100 players out of the millions out there? That's not like that makes the bulk of PC gamers any different.

I remember something about Ensemble wanting to do more with the game. I think they said they had planned on doing a campaign for the covenant but had to drop it for some reason (time? Anyone remember?)
Apart from The Flood, I can't think of a third faction they could have added. I think the fact that each leader has their own skills adds variety enough for what it is but adding The Flood as a controllable force may have sweetened it even more.
I know I already said it but this really is crying out for a sequel. I hope there's enough former Ensemble guys at 343 to do that and do a good job of it.
