Sony's advice to those currently having hiccups with Gran Turismo 5 is to temporarily disable internet access on their consoles. Eurogamer reports that the game's constant online connection, even while navigating single-player content and menus, is causing "longer than comfortable lag."
Sony has confirmed the game "performs online access not only when participating in online races and using community features, but also when starting the game and during the various screen displays in GT Mode." This is causing "online congestion" and the publisher is working on "several different solutions" to improve the network.
One of the solutions should come this Saturday, November 27, as GT creator Kazunori Yamauchi says a patch will fix several issues, including "the usability of the game to make it a better experience." He noted the game's data center was "set up to handle 500,000 connections, but the number of connections we received greatly exceeded that amount and there was a high chance of experiencing problems as a result."
Wait, wait, wait. Gran Turismo 5 was designed in such a way that it constantly pings a data center that was only set to handle half a million connections... for a Gran Turismo game? It sounds like Sony hired the same consultant Battlefield developer DICE uses to come up with its launch week capacity requirements.

Well i can understand why, i don't think they expected to sale more than that in the first week. but i'm almost shocked that they reached their limit on day one. Great game by the way. Not perfect but it is GT, been playing all night. Get a wheel, makes everything so much better.

A few days ago I figured a racing game is best played with a wheel like a fighting game is best played with a stick... you've just confirmed my thoughts.
My wallet will be mad at you.

Get with the program Sony this is inexcusable.

@Barkley610 I always get defensive when reading the slamming a game gets when the net infrastructure comes to its knees on game launch, probably because I used to work in this area.
A couple things, 500,000k concurrent connections is actually a lot, that's connections to the server at the same time, not overall people playing online. That's a pretty big number for PSN, I think xbox360 only broke 2 million last year and that's for ALL GAMES, and during the MW2 launch. There estimates were probably fine and game some buffer. More likely the problem is that testing online capacity is terribly difficult. It is very difficult to simulate 500,000k connections and so client and server code bugs crop up that were never present in testing/QA. Some little line of code when multiplied by 500,000 may be giving a problem that nobody saw. So give the guys running these servers a bit of a break, they are probably spending their holidays in front of a wall of code so you can play a game on your holidays. It's not inexcusable, it's just terribly difficult, and we'll probably continue to see online hiccups with the big game launches.
What is inexcusable however is that it sounds like the UI is polling net features...that is a big no no. Just from a design perspective, you never want your UI to stall on anything but user input. And even if it's necessary (like searching for a game), you should give the user the chance to cancel, or back out. Again I'm biased since I was a net programmer...so I bet a UI programmer made that mistake :)

Make it a better experience? They spent 6 years on this egotistical edifice and its not working. Looks like they should have delayed it.

@Hong Dong delay it because of shortage of servers which could be added from a few hours to a few days? yeah... totally makes sense.

Did they 'really' think 500k connections were going to be enough for a Gran Turismo game that launched the day before many people have a four day weekend in America?
Plus everyone else in the world that's taken time off from work to play it?
.....what?

I hate any software that accesses the internet unless I'm specifically telling it to. Looks like I need a firewall for my PS3.

I keep my PS3 as far back behind the current firmware just because of this, I don't want it talking unless I say so.
The only time i upgrade is when a game needs it, and luckily, just like GT5, most need a patch by the time I'm ready to play them, and as long as I hit the "Hell no" button (circle) it shouldn't connect.

@Hivetyrant Yeah but then you're sacrificing all online functionality of the PS3. That's a bit extreme since I actually do enjoy multiplayer. I just want games to stop "phoning home" for something as simple as game menus. I do think it's ridiculous that you're forced to upgrade firmware before going online though. It's not as though the way the friend's list works changes each update or web browsing or netflix streaming. It's just their way to force everyone to update whether we want to or not.

Only 50,000 connections? Maybe they should rent some space from Apple, I'm sure they could afford to spare a few million with that new datacenter they built in North Carolina.

I have yet to pick up the game but this is really stupid, its not like multiplayer on consoles is new!
Polyphony/Sony have been working on this game for 5 years, they released an online multiplayer demo almost exactly one year ago and we still get online issues...

As mush as I wanted this game I held off buying it until all the kinks are worked out. This is a problem with all the big game releases, how many times does this have to happen before they go above and beyond the expected sales volume instead of cutting it fine.

@shopping bags haha i doubt it mate. NFS and GT/Forza is totally different games with different purposes. i played my friend's NFS:HP and i switched it off after hour or so and just like that i gave it back. NFS is just not for me it's too arcady and i hate nitrous.

After all the delays this is just incompetence. I mean yes this has been delayed so often it almost became a running gag in the industry but you'd think you'd invest in some server hardware that was able to handle the load especially given the paid beta that was run earlier. I'm not blaming Sony for this, I'm blaming the team who developed this. Too interested in going to car shows instead of working at making a solid and stable game.

@commonperson This is incompetence, but it has nothing to do with the delays.

Developer stupidity is rife.
Yeah, I'm sure it seems like a great idea to collect info on what your customers are going when in your menu system instead of just when playing online.
But did you stop to think of the customer? This isn't just about you as a developer, it's about what the customer is getting from the game. And you taking a risk of making the game suck for them so you can collect a little data is not putting the customer first.

I don't know, you make a triple AAA title-- one of the premier releases on the Sony platofrm, that has historically sold well in the past, and then you way under-estimate the total number of multiplayer connections to support the game and you don't have the infrastructure ready? That seems odd to me. I'm wondering if they didn't plan on releasing it when they did.

I noticed the server congestion as well. I just logged off PSN and then had no issues. Hopefully it gets fixed soon.

To be fair, 500,000 connections is probably more than enough once the launch-week marathoners go back to work.

I like the game but it is sort of a let down. I know they claim this game will "grow" over time with updates but that's the same sh*t they said with prologue and they screwed us! They claimed with that we would get voice chat, friend invites, damage, and our cars could transfer, maybe even a discount on GT5 when it came out!!! All BS so why should I believe them now, that fool even claims they are working on GT6 now??? F*ck GT6, finish GT5 and get this working right. The damage sucks, menus suck, downloads suck, online sucks and is confusing and un-fair. The single player is fun and 200 of the cars are pretty but everything else feels half ass, what have you and your team been doing for 5 years, maybe less tv shows, racing events, and game trailers and more work on what matters, I give this game a C and would dare say, Forza is better and I hate Xbox!!!

@B1
That's what Sony did with PS3 this generation. It released a half-baked product at the launch with 699.99 price tag then released more refined one 2 years after.
This game already gets 130+ patches a few days after it got released. What gives?
