Donkey Kong Country Returns developer Retro Studios doesn't just have a knack for successfully rebooting beloved Nintendo franchises, it's also got a wicked eye for bold fashion statements. For instance, the star-spangled signature necktie of Donkey Kong high-score contender Billy Mitchell (pictured right; from The King of Kong film) must have ensnared the attention of somebody at Retro, as the familiar pattern managed to sneak its way into DKC Returns, hidden in the backdrop of World 3-2 (pictured left).
Now, if only the developer could have found a way to sneak in Mitchell's undying admiration of hot sauce, or, you know, his overall winning personality.

Billy's mullet - sponsered by Vidal Sasoon. Because Billy only uses the best for Billy's hair (cue hairwhip).

Apart from Viva Pinata, what have Rare actually made that was really anygood? I kinda like VP, but it's difficulty should of been aimed lower for kids, those red dudes in TiP are practically unstopable, so that your not ruined efforts were just a complete waste of time

@Mazrael True, they haven't done much good since Nintendo sold them off.
Well, except for Viva, which I love.

@Mazrael Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts is one of the best games of this generation, and easily my favourite on any platform. It gets way to much hate from people disappointed it wasn't a pure platformer, when it's one of the most original and inventive games to come out since Pikmin.

And yet, it doesn't hold a candle to anything Rare made on the Super NES and N64.
Donkey Kong Country, Goldeneye 007, Perfect Dark, Banjo Kazooie: all of these games are infinitively superior to Viva Pinata, Banjo Nuts and Bolts or anything else that Rare has made in the last decade.
Rare really is the most unfortunate example of a developer failing. They used to be one of the best bar none, and now they model clothes for avatars. Talk about as far as you can fall.

There's the thing though, the SNES/N64 days was possibly their best work
.. my first Rare game was Battletoads (in Ragnoraks World), which was damn near impossible since you had to guess where things were (unlike the SNES version).. seems to be when you get to the Microsoft years, Rare lose something.. perhaps it's MS's "ship it asap" mentality (like with Turn 10's Forza 3 was tidied up rather then being left til the dev's were 100% happy with it)

...So I'm confused ...why are we talking about Rare? Because they made a DK game over a decade ago?
FWIW, I believe Rare is responsible for most (if not all) of the Xbox Avatar stuff, so I guess they've kept themselves busy. But yeah I do miss games like Jet Force Gemini and Donkey Kong 64.
