Wolfenstein 3D recreated (with alarming accuracy) in LittleBigPlanet 2

If you're a game developer who isn't Media Molecule, you should be quivering with fear right now: LittleBigPlanet 2 beta player "RAPHAEL" has created a near-perfect mock-up of Wolfenstein 3D using the game's creation tools. See? We tried to warn you guys. LBP 2 is every game.

It could use some refining, but the fact that this was made within another video game is astounding.

Also it's the same person that made the identical to the original flow, flower, and the dogfight level, which I think have all been posted on this site. He is just doing incredibly in the beta.

This is highly impressive, a little choppy, but man, how long did it take him to do all that?
Posted: Dec 7th 2010 6:01PM Rauland said
@Primate
Not very long. 80% of it was already done for him.
A creator named Foofles created the ray caster tech and had a detailed explanation of his blog. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vAIoEclk2ls
All he did was replace those ray caster blocks with background layer blocks and added a shoddy gun.
This can be vastly revised and improved. RapheaI shouldn't be getting all the praise, only 20% of it.

That's like saying that the creator of Twitter should only get credit for 20% his invention because his codebase is built upon the internet and javascript.
Anyone can build the wheel, but a real genius puts four of them together to make a car. Brilliance is bulding magic upon a solid base, not necessarily creating a completely new base all the time.

I think it might be saying something more like giving all the credit to either of these guys and none to media molecule. It sounds like the guy who did the 80% portion is the person who created the methods and tools. The 20% person just arranged it into a Wolfenstein level, which is more core than brilliant.
There can be two things here you know. The first guy is brilliant but totally uncool. Raphael is cool but not brilliant?

A bit disorienting but otherwise you're right! A near- perfect representation of the concept. Can't wait to see what comes next. Also, the creativity of some people is amazing!

Good news for other game devs: while impressive, this doesn't look even slightly fun.

I don't want to sound like a jerk, i think its cool that you can makes games within games, but common...this guy probably spent countless hours making...a bad copy of an old, not that great game... How about use the tool to make something new and creative? Just imagine the possibilities that this could have...
I don't want to sound cliche' but...dude, get a life...

um WTF ? Wolfenstein is a Great game in it's time ... and really STILL IS ! and if someone wants too go all out and make a level that well then so be it ! by saying they got no life is just Downright Dumb. That's like if someone said.... Wow this guy has no life but yet they sit and play a game like WoW for 8 Hours Straight or Cod for 8 Hours Straight, see what i mean someone may get their joy into playing Wow 8 Hours Straight and someone may get their joy of creating Levels in LBP for a few hours straight.

YEAH TOTALLY HE SHOULD JUST stop making levels just because you said so... Maybe this person enjoys what he is doing? Maybe this impresses Mm that shows the tools that weren't intended for 3D FPS AT ALL (take note of that) are being used to create 3D FPS. He is more aware of the limits then you are and . There are a lot of people doing new and creative things. Only a tiny % make stuff like this.

"Old, not that great game" ?
Wolfenstein 3D is the grandfather to FPS's. You owe EVERY SINGLE FPS THAT EXISTS TO THAT GAME.

So you'd rather there not be good levels on LBP2?

@Drakkenfyre By that logic you should be playing "Adventure" or Pong now. Wolfenstein was a milestone but that doesn't actually make it a good game by today's standards. Come on, get off your high horse and just admit to yourself that the best you get out of Wolfenstein today is the glee of nostalgia. Well that and a good laugh at 'how bad it is'* - and with that I mean the funny animations and ridiculous voice acting.
*Reading through John Romero's article on the creation of Wolfenstein, I can believe that they might have been intended to be funny, so "bad" might not really fit.

@TraceurRyuk Prepping for LBP2 Wouldn't you prefer something else than a bad copy of Wolfenstein. I mean, if I want Wolfenstein I can just play that. Or one of the trillion games that improved on that concept.
I congratulate the developer on its technical skill, but creative, fun or necessary this is not.
The same holds for all those super mario 1-1 rip offs. I played that a million of times, I don't need another version.
That doesn't mean that the person should stop - if they have fun they won't care anyways. Just imagine though those people would actually use their skill to try something 'new' .... sigh ...

Impressive, but I wouldn't call it "near perfect."
The tiling combined with blur to make it hard on your eyes as you move. The lack of objects in the middle between you and the wall make it hard to judge movement when there isn't a wall right next to you, and the sprites are very blurry.

But yeah, it's pretty damn impressive. If we're getting stuff like this even before the game is out, I shudder to imagine what wonders await us.

This game is still in beta and people are doing this? Man... I haven't created a level that is actually worth playing in LBP... but I'm always floored by the creativity of others. I'm also a little jealous of it.
It's really blocky and difficult to see, but damn it's still amazing. Just give more effort and I'm sure they'll be remaking Fallout 3 in no time. The at home development community never ceases to amaze me.

Re: wolfenstien. frikin brilliant.
As a developer, Re: the guy that actually made the ray caster engine. That's just terrifying. Anyone who doesn't know what ray casting is (probably a helluva lot of people) just please look it up and get a handle on the concept, then try to think about how one would go about doing that... inside a platformer level builder. If your head isn't on the verge of exploding you should either improve this engine because you need something to keep you busy in your off time between blowing minds and inventing a utopian future, OR you don't actually understand what a ray caster is, please begin again at step one.
