Super Mario Galaxy 2 so so so much!

Super Mario Galaxy 2, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Disney Epic Mickey and Kirby Epic Yarn.

Wii had an awesome year for platformers!

I know I'm repeating myself a lot, but it baffles how neither NFS:HP or SMG2 made the top 10.

And of course, how could I forget Bit Trip Runner in that list of platformers! Fluidity also has been an amazing platformer.

Just realised as well, I love platformers, probably why Wii is my console of choice as it really offers the best selection.

Thriced?

I agree :) Absolutely phenomenal list.

Still shocked that not a single Wii game made the list when it was such a banner year for Wii. Granted, the other systems did well on the gamefront also, but SMG2 got robbed. The platformer that made the top 5, Super Meat Boy (a very fun game) is not better than SMG2. My opinion, but I'm fairly sure most gamers would agree with me. The fact that SMG2 did not even place in the top 10 is an injustice.

Agreed. This is pretty much my top 10 list. I wouldn't be surprised if some of these got left out because Joystiq editors are admittedly mostly 360 guys who probably never played the exclusives on the other consoles.

Not to beat a dead horse but seriously Split Second?

@JnRx I totally agree. Apparently Randy's tastes are much like my own - so much so that I'm going to pick up the 3 titles on this list that I haven't played.

Great picks IMHO.

Yeah, the problem with this "Top 10 By Committee" balloting is that it basically ends up reflecting, "What games did the largest intersection of the voting committee end up playing?" (Or: "What games did Ludwig load with unreasonably high scores to force onto the list?")

That's why the top 4 Joystiq picks are all third-person adventure games available on the XBox 360. (If you're about to get into a big debate about the difference between Action-RPG and Adventure, just don't)

It is obvious that next year, Randy should just select the top 10 himself (just be sure to purchase a computer so you can play Starcraft/Civ!)

I think Joystiq's top 4 is solid, but the rest of their list is pretty suspect. From Randy's list alone I would add Mario Galaxy 2, Halo Reach, God of War 3 and Need for Speed Hot Pursuit and remove Super Meat Boy, Split/Second, Bad Company 2 and Rockband 3.

I'm happy to see NFS:HP in a few of these lists, but am very sad to see GT5 not mentioned ANYWHERE on Joystiq, or even the general gaming media as a whole.

A lot of the issues people had with the game stemmed from not playing the game enough. It's a solid game and I haven't played anything else since its release (except for some Halo here and there). Ah well. Maybe GT6 will fare better with the gaming media :)

@VEX GT5 was most under rated game of the gen. It's sad that sites like joystiq played the game for 15 min an wrote their review. It gets better with every week that passes.

"A lot of the issues people had with the game stemmed from not playing the game enough."

Dude, come on. All the proponents of FF13 and GT5 keep throwing out the same tired contention: "This game is actually fun to play once you get past the first 30 hours!"

To me, that's not an argument that the games are worthy of GOTY consideration. It's an argument that these games need to be redesigned from the ground up.

@copa Who said it takes 30 hours of gt before it's fun? It fun from the very start, they just pick it to death expecting the second coming of Christ. Gt was held to a standard that no other game has been held to, while far worse game score better, I'm not saying it a 10 ( zelda ocarina of time is the only 10 game I've ever played) but 9 is a fair score. It could have at least made the bottom of the list considering the fan base this game has.

Where did I say it gets fun to play after a certain amount of time? It was fun to play straight from the start. People had issues with damage and AI, which get progressively better in the single player mode as you get higher levels. In Arcade Mode, they're already set to the highest levels (unless you turn damage off).

Also, the amount of new content GT5 introduced to the genre was staggering (dynamic damage, manager mode, NASCAR/WRC/F1 all in the same game, dynamic weather, day/night shifting etc). Do you just go and discount all that because reviewers took, as mmmfishtacos said, 15 minutes with the game and based their assumptions on that?

Joystiq's review of the game was rather weak as well. You guys can hate on GT5 all you want, but as someone who has actually given it a chance, it deserves to be on the 'Best of the Rest Lists' at the very list. But I get it, having an unpopular opinion = downvoting, so downvote away!

It was a horribly overhyped game. It just wasn't as polished as it should've been. It's sad, however it's very true. It just doesn't deserve to be in the top 10. That's not to say it's a bad game, as it's totally competent, but it's not worthy of "top 10" praise, either.

How is it horribly under polished? Except for the shadows and the Standard cars, there is NOTHING else under polished about it.

Anyways, it may not deserve to be in the Top 10 (which i'm fine with), but it does deserve to have at least one mention on Joystiq, or anywhere else for that matter.

I don't know about the demo, but the problem with Darksiders is that the first 2 hours or so grossly misrepresent the rest of the game. Once you get to the first temple, that's where it's at.

Darksiders, at least imo, was a far better game then GoW3. Sure, it didn't have the graphics (still great though), but overall it was a lot more fun and exciting then GoW3. There was more to do, it was fun exploring the world and collecting everything, and really polished all the way around.

I kind of have to disagree with you there. By the time I had to collect the shards of the Apocalypse Sword, I kind of lost interest and never finished the game. I still have it, and I'm planning on finishing it some day, but it just got a little to repetitive to me.

GOW3 on the other hand was just more exciting. Had great pacing and some of the best boss battles in a video game. It was a beauty to look at too.

Everyone has their opinions though.

As far as direct sequels go, even it managed to make significant revisions, bringing 3D Mario closer to 2D Mario in terms of mechanics (and overworld). Impressive enough given that it's the first same-console sequel for a Mario game since the NES

I'm glad to see Reach's campaign getting some love, it seems that most thought it was mediocre but I liked it a lot. In some ways it was like ODST: Spartan Edition, but I mean that in the best way possible. Bungie obviously took some cues from ODST, and I think they did a good job of it, but they made it more "Spartan-ized," using several of the best elements from each prior Halo. To me, that made it feel like a true culmination of the Halo series. I guess people didn't like ODST too much either though, so it's not really surprising.
