I'm sure they know what they're doing, but an electromagnetic field doesn't sound all that good for expensive computer hardware.

@MrXBob Just to point out, since I don't think I was very clear - what I mean is it doesnt sound too safe for all the other electrical equipment surrounding it.

I'm sure its fine, of course it is - they wouldn't be using it otherwise. Just /sounds/ a bit dodgy :p

I was never much for keyboard and mouse for PC games. But this... this I will keep my eye on and I do want.

Joystiq: Where people get down voted for stating their opinions.

Seriously... this guy didn't make a claim that mouse and keyboard sucked, he just said he didn't prefer it. And he was in the right to compare this peripheral to a mouse. If you look at the camera control in-game as it corresponds to the wand, it's positional based, like a mouse. Meaning the camera doesn't continue to move right when you point it to the right.

Looks interesting but from what I've seen so far,

I rather keep my keyboard and mouse =)

Doesn't mean I'm against innovation, but aiming using a joystick? not my cup of tea anymore.

He definitely wasn't aiming using the joystick. You do realize this is a motion controller right? He was moving the right controller to aim, and using the joystick on the left to move around.

I just don't understand who these are marketed to, any serious PC gamer is going to swear by M+KB, even if they are viable. The only people I could think of who would look for this would be console gamers who want their motion controls, but they already have that on their console...

i don't know. movement with a joystick is MUCH better than WASD, and if you get used to pointing, you would likely be just as good with the motion controller as you would be with a mouse.

I'm worried that the button scheme will force the player to stop moving in order to perform certain actions. Most controllers / keyboard configurations avoid this. Seems interesting but will have to try it or see it live before I believe it's a replacement.

Also, was funny to see the guy jump (action bound to a similar gesture) as he threw the grenade with the press and gesture action in the Black Ops video :P

You move the player with the left joystick. All of those motion sensitive controls were mapped to the left wand, so there's nothing stopping the player from continuing to hold the joystick down while flailing their left hand around.

Does it seem wrong to type "joystick" to anyone else who has been on this website for a long time?

The motion controls for Black Ops looks awful. No thanks.

For Portal 2? Sure. But aiming with sticks is awful. Get me a mouse and a chuck and I'd be happier.

He's not aiming with the stick. Watch the video. It even explains that aiming is done by tilting the right "wand." And it's not acceleration based like a joytick, it appears to be positional based, like a mouse. It actually looks like the closest thing I've seen to mouse control in a non-mouse peripheral yet.

Im gonna say the point of motion control is no buttons right?
Now A joystick is understandable and neccessary but having like 20 buttons is kind of backwards.

Seems like it has some cool applications but I doubt most FPS players will use this over a mouse. It also looks like doing a rocket jump would be very awkward, as rapidly crouching and jumping would be difficult.

hm..skeptical.

It looks too clinical for me. There doesn't seem to be anything engaging and holding your arms steady all the while you play a game seems like a devolution rather than an evolution or even a revolution.

I will wait until the product is out, but it just looks too clinical.

Too clinical? I don't think that word means what you think it means. Ever tried aiming a real gun? Need pretty steady hands for that, too. You're saying you can't keep your hands steady while firing a fake one?

The thing that I like about this controller is that the aiming that i being done with the right wand doesn't appear to be the traditional joytick-mapped-to-a-motion-controller like every Wii FPS. When you have a pointing device like this, it's losing out on serious potential when it's being used to emulate an acceleration based input like a joystick.

This one, if you watch the video closely, appears to react like a mouse rather than a joystick. When he moves it to the right, the camera rotates right, and stops. It doesn't keep rotating right like with a joystick. This is the kind of motion control for PFS that I've been saying needs to be implemented for a long time.

Only problem is that this kind of control needs to be specifically supported with console games. They don't have support for mouse-like input natively, which is why these mouse solutions like Splitfish FragFX, Fragenstein, etc. need to allow for tons of customization. Those peripherals are trying to emulate mouse movement by translating real mouse input data to the corresponding data of a joystick. Every game's joystick algorithm is different, so the way the game interprets the mouse peripheral will be different and warrant different results from game to game. What I'm saying is, unless you use this with a PC where it will be more or less a novelty because mouse and keyboard is obviously supported, or a console game specifically supports this controller and/or native mouse input, it's not going to be an improvement for a console game like Black Ops.

It certainly looks better than the INSANELY laggy PS Move though. Holycrap, I tried that thing at Best Buy the other day, I can't believe how much input lag there is. I'm not trolling here, I'm expressing disappointment. I wanted to like the thing. I can't believe it's going to be an option for Killzone 3.

The one time I tried it, it lagged about as much as in this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BPyZiKcI-EE&feature=youtube_gdata_player

If this is not how everyone else's Moves react, then great. But if this video indeed reflects the average latency of the device, I would not call it very responsive. In the video, the guy's sword movement was following behind the move's movement. It's not instantaneous, and that's what I was experiencing in the Best Buy when I tried it.

It's important to note that it was really only noticeable during menu screens, but it also means that in games that require quivker, more precise aiming, it would not be preferable.

The Wii's IR aiming isn't always that responsive either. Many minigame type games work great, but Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles has a bit of input lag present in the aiming. Maybe it's the same with the Move? Certain games are more responsive than others?

Dude, part of that input lag is due to the video signal travelling to the TV; there are delays depending on the cables and the actual screen being used. I think the actual frame rate of the game has an effect as well, at least a psychological one. Also, having a bunch of customization options isn't really an excuse for poor controls in general. Metroid Prime 3 has no customization options other than 3 general sensitivity options (low medium and high) and it plays better than any other motion controlled first person game of any kind. Its just well made.

Finally, there's the fundamental matter that most people aren't going to notice the lag anyway. Snivelling technology nerds who engage in never ending arbitrary battles over who's box of silicon is the best will notice it and pick it apart ad nauseum, but most people probably can't fathom what input lag even is. Every time I'm in an electronics store I see at least a few giant fat Midwestern women gawking at some shiny gadget and saying things like "it ain't not got none o them thar CPU. (I'm not making that up)" Ultimately they are the people motion control is truly meant for, not people who play first person shooters.

I would love to see a control scheme that is superior to mouse and keyboard.

This isn't it.

What if you have 10 weapons.... 6 items... moving... leaning.. etc...
ya need the keyboard. It constantly baffles me how few people are willing to spend the time to learn keyboard... while it is not easy to pick up the benefits of any time spent on one are obvious.

Mouse aiming is still (and may be for multiple future decades) the most precise accurate tool in existence for serious gamers. Whats sad is... due to recent gaming changes... and consoles becoming so popular... and the trend of controls becoming such a low priority.. that gaming mouse development has basically ceased. Very sad, because there is still a bit further to go in mouse development.

Coming from a controller- this is a definite upgrade...
But not from a true mouse and keyboard.

So... this seems... cool.
Cool, like I would play it at a friends house for 30 minutes ...
Then go home and get serious with my M+K.
But ... that is coming from a serious gaming perspective... not the casual view.
