When I clicked on the link to this story, I thought to myself that if I was the one to comment first, I would say "BEST MONTH EVAR!!!". Bizarrely enough, you seem to have channeled my thoughts, albeit with less exclamation points. Well played.

It's interesting how Microsoft managed to have such a great year without a great first pary exclusive lineup. I wonder if they can maintain it next year when the PS3 brings out it's very strong first party lineup.

Nintendo may also rule 2011 with their new system launch, 3DS and its strong software lineup, and shipping a new Zelda.

"without a great first pary exclusive lineup"

You're joking, right? Alan Wake, Halo: Reach, Fable 3 is somehow not a great first party exclusive lineup? And non first party exclusives like Mass Effect 2 (which was timed) and Splinter Conviction both help drive interest. Couple that with Kinect and there's your success, it's not really hard to figure out.

@Hoops It worth noting that Halo: Reach (7.55m) outsold Gran Tourismo 5 (4.92m) by 2.63 million units based on VGChartz info for total game sales in 2010.

Both titles were the #2 title on their respective charts, with Call of Duty: Black Ops being the #1 title on both (10.19m Xbox 360 vs. 8.04m PS3).

Gears 3 sounds like a pretty big deal that's coming out for the 360, and it's got me pretty excited. Sony may have a ton of exclusives coming out, but I'm honestly starting to lose interest in my PS3. I use to love it the most, but the little things (like not being able to plus some headphones into it and get audio into them, what the balls) are starting to annoy me about it.

The 360 controller is even starting to grow on me a bit, and I really loved the feel of it every since I've been playing borderlands. I actually bought live again from the amazon deal, and I'm looking forward to playing some gears again and talking to people online while I kill some peeps. The PS3 may have some good games coming out, (except perhaps KZ3, which I don't care about at all since KZ2 was just an overly crude half-finished game), but I've been enticed back to my 360, so those first party games won't really affect me much as of now.

ME2 and Splinter Cell were never exclusives, not even timed. Pretty sure I was playing those on my PC right when they came out.

@kcswanko 'You people?' I have all the systems, handhelds included, and I play my 360 FAR more than I play the others. MY PS3 I only use for exclusives, but I don't see how you doubt the list of exclusives they're getting this year. Little Big Planet 2, Resistance 3, Uncharted 3, Kill Zone 3, Twisted Metal, Infamous 2 and Last Guardian. Compared to... Gears 3? I'm a huge Gears fan and I'm buying Bulletstorm on release day largely so I can play the beta, but as awesome as Gears is, it doesn't trump that list. I expect Microsoft to have a few surprises this year, including hopefully the rumored Halo remake(s) but the sheer list of Sony's expected lineup is impressive, and to dispute that is ridiculous.

First it was trees and spikey rocks, Now your selling homes. You have one hell of a store.

But none of this has to do with games. For that I say poof be gone.

Good job Microsoft. Just think it was but 10 years ago they decided to enter into the console industry, Facing a mountain of doubt and skepticism they have made a name for their selves and their console within the industry,

Keep it up guys. In the end we the customers are the winners. The more competition there is the more gaming variety's, styles, and interest to garner our attention they will pull.

@Stevetrop Man of Mystery I agree. Without Microsoft I think Nintendo wouldn't have been as aggressive with the DS and Wii which regardless of how we feel about the two systems, have some very influential tech. For the better imo.

Without Microsoft we'd all probably still be using memory cards and we'd all be signing up for 23947928374 online accounts because every game would have its own online system that was specific to that game. There probably wouldn't be any massive online network like we have now with XBL and subsequently PSN. No friends list that populate across games or anything like that.

This is why I keep telling people that WP7 will succeed. You can draw a direct parallel between XBOX and WP7. When WP7 came out all the nay-sayers were right there calling for it to fail, etc, just like back in 2001 with the XBOX. Just give Microsoft some time. It may take a while, but they will end up succeeding (if they support it properly, which they say they will).

I wonder when a new console will be unveiled? Or will we see these constant upgrades for another 5 years. A lot of people say Sony lost because of MSs year head start I wonder if they plan on turning the tables with their next gen. We are certainly at the tail end of a console cycle with no news to speak of. Nay, no hints even!

The Xbox has held on to that year head start lead, which means that PS3 has managed to sell about the same if not more since it has been out. Even with the fact that the PS3 has a higher starting price it out sold the Xbox for the past two years...Interesting

@Jack Kevorkian I suspect because the PS3 got cracked, Sony will have to quicken the pace of releasing their next generation hardware. Court battles won't plug the hole created by the root key release. And despite all of the bluster about what Sony can do to the consoles if they are used for homebrew or piracy, the fact remains any console from this point on is open and subject to being hacked.

Their other option is to come out with the PS3.5, in which they redo the security of the console, but in doing so they'll likely create a few more problems, not to mention waste money in re-engineering that could have been spent on the PS4.

So, bottom-line. We'll see a new PlayStation model announced in 2012.

The system war is over. What I mean there is that MS doesn't need exclusives to sell the 360 because there are so many games that it has it will continue to sell off of that and it's new hardware.

Sony First party games will sell pretty good but the days where those would sell a system are over and that goes for all three big companies.

@Machiavellian79 A killer app Kinect exclusive would sell the system just as Nintendogs sold the DS in face of a technically dominant PSP. The same could happen with the move if it were able to do something the others could not.

So no, you are wrong. And ps2 dominace wasnt some ancient time so long ago. It was 4 years ago. A drop in the bucket of time.

It could, and will, happen again. To someone. Probably Sega.

Having a great catolouge is important for a console, but it's new releases that mostly motivate people, build hype and push console sales.

...but still unable to topple the Wii for December (according to the NPD).

I own all 3 consoles, and while the 360 still earns a lot of game time from me - as of late, the Wii has received a LOT of attention from me. Donkey Kong Country Returns is a game of sheer brilliance and deserves to be played by every gamer!

I also have to say how impressed I am with how well New Super Mario Bros is preforming on Wii - ranked #4 on the NPD and it's been out for how long? I really hope people playing that game pick up DKC:R (and the new Kirby, which I own, but have yet to play). Side scrolling games can still be huge fun if done right (see: Nintendo). I also hope E3 this year has Nintendo unveiling a new contingent of side-scrollers for the Wii (New Super Mario Bros 2?).

My PS3 on the other hand hasn't had much attention (save watching movies) - Resistance 3 and Uncharted 3 will cure that this year :)

@Axcalibur The Wii had an outstanding month for December. With how well the Xbox 360 did in November (beating the Wii), I figured it would likely pull that same punch in December. But with lots of discounts all over the place of $50 off, the Wii sold like gangbusters as did the software.

The PS3, which wasn't hardly discounted anywhere in November, also received store discounts of $50 or more off, and ended up with a great December too.
