Despite a small 6% dip in quarterly sales year-over-year, "due to a decrease in sales in the game business resulting primarily from unfavorable foreign exchange rates," Sony's Networked Products & Services group, which houses its PlayStation brand, posted an impressive ¥45.7 billion (rougly $564 million) in profits for the third quarter period, ended December 31, an impressive 135% boost over the prior-year period. "The game business benefited from significant cost reductions of PlayStation 3 ("PS3") hardware and higher unit sales of PS3 software," the earnings report reads.
Though quarterly sales of both the PlayStation 3 and PSP lagged year-over-year, Sony is forecasting 15 million PS3 consoles sold for the fiscal year, compared to 13 million for the year prior. Coupled with the aforementioned "cost reductions" and significant bumps in PlayStation 3 software sales, things are looking up in PS3-land. Over in PSP and PS2 land, things aren't so bright. The PSP, recently stricken by hardware obsolescence, is forecasted to sell eight million units for the year, versus nearly ten million last year, while the PS2 is on track to rack up six million in sales, compared to over seven million last year.
Toss in some profitability on the PSN front – Sony's working on it – and fiscal 2011 is looking bright for Sony.

@Bumper - They've lost billions on the PS3 overall. Let them break even on it first before you start asking for a handout.

My God. 7 million PS2's last year? Another 6 million expected this year. Easily one of the best consoles of all time. I doubt even Sony knew that it would still be generating this much business. Simply amazing. I don't think any other console will have such an incredible lifespan. They will probably keep selling them when the PS4 is out.

Maybe because it's a last-gen console. Use your brain.

You don't need new games to get a console. With the price of PS2 games right now and the incredible library for the console there is more than enough content to go around. Even though I have moved to a PS3 I am still buying PS2 games occasionally as there are many great titles I missed when they came out.

Ps2 Sony Listen To you People~! Ps2 still may be more popular than the ps3 in some cases o__o hell I'm still thinking of buying one so I can play persona 4 among other game. I Think sony needs to make commercials for the ps2 and make it seem extra cheap and show off the large collection of games i'm sure that will pull in the parents and gamers on a budget.

Don't buy a PS2. Go read a book. You seem to be only half-literate.

As far as I can tell "Networked Products & Services" is the one division that seems to be doing the best in the company, but not the "Game" portion of that division which is actually in decline (-3.9%), but actually the "PC and Other Networked Businesses." if you look at the last nine months that ended Dec 31.
"Consumer, Professional & Devices" was hit and miss, depending on how you look at the numbers.
Pictures (Movies), and Music were drags on the company.
Seling to US and Europe were both in decline.

The PSP and PS2 numbers aren't actually anything to write into... because they can't cost hardly anything to produce by now. Especially PS2s. I'm guessing PS2s are almost pure profit for Sony by now. Probably don't cost much more to produce than a low end phone, if that. I'm guessing they get around a 100-200% return on investment for those things, even at a price point less than most handhelds. That's at least $50 profit on every sale. I bet MS wishes they'd just upgraded and slimmed down the original XBox with as well as the PS2 is still doing 5 YEARS into the next console generation.

I too wish they'd have slimmed down the ol' school Xbox and kept it...or just kept generating solid games for it years down the road. Its lifespan was cut entirely too short, and it was even the more reliable piece of hardware of the two...WHY, MICROSOFT, WHY?!?!
