SouthPeak posts $2.1 million quarterly loss, future uncertain
16
Despite reclaiming rights to the My Baby franchise last year, SouthPeak continued to decline into potential insolvency during the second quarter (ending December 31, 2010) of its current fiscal year. Net revenue for the quarter was just $7.5 million, down $2.6 million from the same period the year before -- not that the company was profitable then, either. Despite revenues being down, however, SouthPeak's total losses for the recent quarter -- $2.1 million -- were actually an improvement of $500K over second quarter losses in the previous fiscal year. (That's one way to put a kind of positive spin on the company's bleak state of affairs.)
As businesses tend to do in desperate times, SouthPeak assuaged investor concerns in its report with forward-looking statements that forecast a bright future for the publisher. Though no specific projects are mentioned, apparently "SouthPeak has also invested in key new titles from which the anticipated profits should help improve its financial prospects." Of course, the report also adds a far more grim disclaimer: "While the Company is committed to pursuing options to continue to address its viability as a going concern, there can be no assurance that the Company's efforts will prove successful." Not exactly confidence inspiring, folks.

I feel bad for all the game companies going down, but SouthPeak was just a publisher, and they backed too many mediocre and bad games to expect anything else.
Legendary? X-Blades? Two Worlds? SouthPeak needed some serious quality control.
Still, sad more people gonna lose their jobs.

I hope Aubrey Norris is ok. She seems like the only cool person there.
Anyways, I hope this doesn't hurt Reality Pump's means of distribution in the future. Two Worlds II is most excellent.
Legendary, X-Blades, Two Worlds, etc., are piss poor, though.
Mushroom Men: The Spore Wars deserves some props as well.

I really dislike the title of this article. The phrase "future uncertain" can be put at the end of any headline and still be valid, ie:
"Now Playing: February 21-27, 2011, future uncertain"
"Bulletstorm 'Gun Sonata' DLC coming this spring, future uncertain"
"Road Rash revisitation artwork surfaces on former Bizarre artist's portfolio, future uncertain"
"Bethesda proves it's really serious about Skyrim baby name contest, future uncertain"
I think you get the point.
The future is always uncertain because it's...the future.

SouthPeak?
Oh yeah, they're the company that doesn't pay its developers and then sues them when they can't get away with simply stealing their intellectual property. The sooner SouthPeak folds, the better. Then Noblis can get back "My Baby" and sell the shit out of it to everyone who owns a Wii and a 3DS.
Speaking scatalogically, changing diapers on the 3DS will be a whole new experience :-) Seriously, Noblis is a good company, and My Baby is the "best" of its genre. I know they look forward to the day SouthPeak stops stealing their property.
Just remember SouthPeak, what goes around comes around.

One less shovelware company to worry about. Hopefully Zoo, Destineer, Majesco, Ubisoft, etc. take this to heart.

Pretty lousy excuse, IMO. Both Two Worlds games have sold well into the millions.

Agreed, but all annual reports for publicly traded companies (yes, this falls outside of that) are required to cite every single possible downfall. Read a couple hundred of them and, like it or not, you realize how powerful MS really is.
Anyway, my point was that it's not out of the ordinary for business people to say, "Here's what we're doing, but this thing could crumble pretty quickly.", especially businesses the size of SouthPeak.
