@randclovis or yes, I guess
whichever means that nobody cares that it's 8-bit and therefore automatically a ripoff of cave story in your mind

It's much more than a passing resemblance simply for being 8-bit styled. Considering every 8-bit game ever made, can you name one that Fez looks more similarly to than Cave Story?

Yeah, I thought this was Cave Story for a moment there.
Unoriginality means no buy. That's why I hate Zynga too.

The characters share a resemblence to Cave Story.. And that's it. The core gameplay itself only has one comparison, which was a PSP game that I owned and can't remember--Crush. It was called Crush. But this game looks different enough from that too.

To say this is unoriginal becausw the characters look a bit Cave Story is absolutely ridiculous. If you're going to say the game is a ripoff of something else, search YouTube for videos of Crush. It's the only thing even close to Fez. Then, go search for videos of The Underside. That game is so close to Cave Story in terms of graphics, gameplay, and story delivery, that I can't believe it. Literally. I don't believe it's not Cave Story 2.

@Pasty I don't need to, because your argument is not worth countering. Fez does not look like Cave Story.

I suppose the same way I'm bothered by the graphical similarity of modern warfare and Medal of Honor. Not games I enjoy, but the point is it doesn't phase me in the least.

I can honestly say that you can buy a 360 just for XBLA and XNA and in no way regret your purchase.

Alright, I'll be taking your word and getting an XBox first when I can afford a console.
Also, I guess now is a good time to stop complaining (and, you know, being so selfish), since I finally realized that they don't have enough manpower for multiplataform release. Duh.
Anyway, thank you!

If they have multiplayer components then yes you need a gold subscription like normal games to play the multiplayer part, but you can buy them and play with a silver account.

I've been keeping my eye on this forever. This game looks so fantastic. I really dig the art style - kind of like a really hi-res Cave Story aesthetic.

I'm beginning to realize whenever the guys at joystiq start drooling over a 2D indie platformer that I have to be cautious. I love your reviews and previews of other games but you seem to be very generous with the compliments when these types of games get released. It almost comes off as some sort of elitism and you're in the know for recognizing this game as some sort of genius.

This is exactly it. They told the world how great games like Meat Boy and Braid were. And whilst I can see their appeal I bought these games for my Xbox and were underwhelmed.
Meat Boy reminded me of N too much and Braid was a polished modern day version of the Gameboy's Donkey Kong.

What it seems to me is they pick up on some popular indie titles and run home with them, shouting how great they are along the way in the hopes of attracting more players. Whilst they amplify their love for some titles they leave behind many more deserving ones. But it's all about what's popular+good rather than what's unpopular+good.

I disagree on so many levels. Super Meat Boy has similar gameplay to N, this is true, but it is about 1000x better. I can see why someone wouldn't care for it much, but it doesn't mean the praise isn't deserved, it just means it's not your cup of tea.

The part of your comment that really baffles me is the Braid part. Did you even play Braid dude? You don't need to like it, but it is so much different from any version of Donkey Kong that I don't even. Just cause you jump over some barrels doesn't means it's the same basic game.

limbo is also a donkey kong clone....because that one part where, you know, you have to like run back and jump over the gap because the flaming tire is coming to get you and then you jump back and run up the hill and have to jump over the rock that they roll at you. oh, and also because it's awesome just like donkey kong was. those damned lord of the flies village kids!!!!

If you had played Donkey Kong '93, you would know that his comparison isn't that far off. Actually. I think it's probably the closest game to Braid, the more I think of it. Of course, this is neglecting the time-manipulation aspect of Braid....

Anyway, I disagree on Super Meat Boy. Even when stacked up against the 8-bit and 16-bit greats, SMB is one of the best platformers of all time.

But Braid... umm... well.. it.... uhhh... has good music?

I think what me and veedeevee are trying to say is that these types of games ARE joystiq's "cup of tea" more than any other. I mean you can tell by reading their reviews and previews. this is a PREVIEW of a tiny part of the game and it says we would be fools to skip it! what if the rest of the game is repetitive and boring? it's not even out, they haven't even played it and they are declaring it a must buy!

braid was decent, but it got boring, and I'm sure limbo was good, and a lot of these other games are pretty good, even Dead Nation is was good but man it was repetitive. it was just a blastfest. look at their review of that game compared to many other sites. They get really giddy over old twitch style games. more so than any other type of game.

that's all I'm saying. If you like these types of games then man, Joystiq has you reviews for YOU. but if you're like me, and feel burned on the last few, you might want to see what other people have to say.

@eat it (PLaying Devils Advocate) With regards to this game, they might be hyping it more because they know it won't get as much attention as your big AAA title games. Just by making a bold statement now about how you should get it when it comes out, they are putting it on people's proverbial radar. I might not get this game when it comes out but I had no idea it existed until today. But yes, on a purely technical standpoint, it does seem a bit far fetched to make a statement like that at this early stage.

I've actually never seen footage of the game. I've heard a hell of a lot about it, but never had any visual evidence as to why it's so hyped up. Gotta say, now I'm really into it. The art and design is very Cave Story, and the music is, dare I say, somewhat MapleStory-ish. However, the character design and attention to detail to 8-bit animation (16-bit?) is marvelous. Can't wait to see how this turns out, and what the story is all about.

SO very excited. I love retro games with modern polish. I liked cave story.... but I didn't feel any modern polish from it. Fez oozes that extra bit of shine. It's all in the details my friends. Can't wait to add another 2d "bit" game to my wonderful DL collection.
