Look, PSM3, can't you just be happy with the crowded slate of titles we're already expecting in 2011? Do you really need to start stoking the fires for 2012? Whether we want it to or not, the UK-based magazine is fanning the flames on rumors of a new God of War for PS3 early, citing a source who claims the game will be out in September of 2012.
Sure, we've heard murmurs about another installment in the franchise, and Sony Santa Monica is supposedly looking into online functionality in a future title, but who says the studio has to make another God of War? It's not like the last one sold that well or anything. What? Oh.

But they've already killed every damn Greek God worth killing, as well as a whole horde of monsters and heroes from the mythology.
Where the hell can they go from here?!?

Kratos hears of god-worship in Rome so he travels there to kill their gods. He soon realizes the Romans were actually worshiping the Greek gods he just killed but were calling them by much stupider names like Jupiter and Mars. Kratos gets pissed and kills every single Roman.

Hopefully they'll improve the controls this time. GoD3 had good controls but they're basically GoW2

Okay... so regardless of whether or not this fourth GOW game will be made, I can't help but ponder the question: Does a fourth GOW game NEED to be made? Sure, you could cash in on the current name power the franchise holds, but I would like to think that a first party developer has enough class to know when to call it quits.
Maybe that's just me...

I played the first 2 GOW and the 1st PSP GOW and I enjoyed all three but I am done with the series. They are great well polished games but the formula doesn't change that much. Unless something is drastically new I am not interested. I would still recommend anyone to play a GOW if you haven't yet for some reason.
I could say the same thing I said above but with Ratchet and Clank too. I think once I play through the third game in a series I really have had my fill. I can't think of a game where I enjoyed the fourth game like I did the first even if it is technically better.

@FriedConsole If you don't play games that change much, then I assume you're running out of things to play. Halo, COD, Gears, Assassins Creed, etc all pretty much play the same and yet are still fun to play, although some more than others.

Nah. There are lots of games to play. Small games are always coming up with new concepts. A lot of games have similar ideas but it is all mixed up with new things and different presentations. I think I could play games for 150 years with just the games that are already in existence.

Seems the wise decision would be to let the series rest for a while until the next playstation comes out.
Sure, that's a couple years from now but god forbid you create a new series with similar mechanics but totally different.
I miss lusting over the return of a series. Waiting patiently for a year, two years, three years and then... *splooge*

i would buy it whenever it came out but a rest probably wouldn't hurt the series. they could let it sit and have GoW4 as a PS4 launch title when it drops in a couple years. plus like a lot of others here, i have no idea where they could even go with the story at this point. we've literally killed everyone.
but one thing is probably set in stone, if it's scheduled for next year, we'll probably hear something about it at the upcoming E3.

I wouldn't doubt that they're working on another God of War - it's too big of a moneymaker for Sony to just drop. The modern entertainment industry has forgotten all about the merits of the "mini-series mindset" of media making, where you go out while you're on top and never show your face again, no matter what fans demand. Instead, they're determined to keep producing sequels until they've driven the franchise to the ground (e.g. Rocky, Batman 1989, The Office US). Unfortunately, fiscally speaking, this is actually the way to go when you want to maximize profits. That's not to say that this game will be bad. The beauty of this video game industry that we love is that unlike almost all other entertainment industries, our sequels tend to get better and better. Finger crossed.
Anyway, if this rumor turns out to be true, don't be surprised if September is just an internal target month. No developer or publisher likes to specify even the quarter of release that far out.

@heypaul True to a point, although there is a danger of burnout and recycled ideas which get old quickly. Having said that, like you said, when it is just about figures and making money then any new entry will undoubtedly achieve those. As a flagship title of the Playstation brand and seeing how iconic Kratos is, I guess it's not really rocket science to say that a new game will come out for the PS3, although I would have been more interested to hear if it would have been coming out on the NGP. No doubt it will at some point but September 2012 (or the tail end of next year) would have made more sense for that.
