Harmonix says it had to 'carry' MTV's publishing operation
20
In a recent interview with Industry Gamers, Harmonix VP of Product Development Greg LoPiccolo remarked on the studio's time under the MTV Games banner. Though he explained he harbors no ill will towards the team's former publisher, he said MTV didn't have "a big enough publishing organization to achieve economies of scale." He added, "They had us, but essentially our games had to carry the entire publishing infrastructure of MTV games which was not particularly efficient."
LoPiccolo said he's grateful for the partnership, explaining, "When they bought us we were a little developer and in collaboration with them we achieved a lot." Despite MTV's help in turning them into the studio they are today, LoPiccolo explained he wasn't worried about the two parties' split. "I think one of the things we've demonstrated to the world at large and to ourselves is that we have a demonstrated ability to make good stuff," he added. "And I think we had a confidence that somebody would see that and have that perspective."

Basically MTV didn't have the facilities to publish games because MTV doesn't know shit about games. They only know reality shows. Even then, that's debatable.

I think they came in quite useful when it came to getting the song licenses and record companies on board. Rock Band Beatles would probably never have happened without MTV..
Behind the veneer of populist trash and nausea-inducing cinematography, there's a bunch of very clever people who have managed to predict, and probably shape youth culture for two decades now.

I suppose you're right. Even though there isn't much 'Music' in MTV someone did decide to pick up Harmonix, who does know a thing or two about video games where as MTV just saw it as a limited-time money pool related to music. It may just be my outlook on the game industry but I despise the idea of MTV thinking they know anything about the gaming industry, but then again MTV probably didn't see any reason to sink their teeth in deeper than Harmonix and Rock Band. Doesn't sound like it was a long term plan. Just a cash grab.

My thought is that MTV really thought they were going to jump into the gaming business on a much more serious level. Buying Harmonix, trying to develop a better relationship with gamers (the blog they had). But like many companies that try to branch into new markets, they just weren't able to adapt to a different business model and culture. Instead of learning to adapt, they quit.

This is not a surprise. MTV basically established the publishing label specifically so that they could get some money in the thriving music game business. With MTV's connection to the music industry it certainly didnt seem like a bad move, but Activision was dedicated to screwing that up.

When's the last time MTV even cared about music?

I happened to turn on MTV the other day when I couldn't sleep, and they just happened to be playing music videos. I don't remember the name of the programme, but the ticker on the bottom read something along the lines of "You're watching 'Programme Name' - and they say we don't play music anymore!"
I thought it was kind of funny, that their defence in the 'MTV doesn't play music' complaint was to put like two hours worth of videos on at 3:00 in the *weekday* morning ... kind of a joke.

They actually show more music videos on MTV2 now. During nights, regular MTV, during days it's MTV2. They switch between eachother.
Really, though, they should just rename themselves to "teen television". Not much stuff relating to music anymore...

Pretty difficult to compete with youtube for music videos these days I guess. Original programming makes a lot more sense when people can get exactly what they want on the internet. Now if they could make it a filtered, interactive service like Spotify Radio..
